This is a great place to catch up with friends! There are inside and outside seatings although on a hot day drinking coffee, inside seems more ideal. I love the interior design and the cute little details they put into the store. I assume people like to study here but this place can get busy which would make me distracted. If you like black coffee, then a siphon coffee would be perfect and the caffeine should be enough to wake you up. My friend thought the coffee was pretty strong 'cause she was jittery afterwards. It's my first time at Siphon, loved the style and design of the place, definitely relaxing and a place to have a meeting. Service was not the best would suggest to be more friendly to guest and offer suggestions, specially when I am telling you it's my first time visiting. I was on my way to my studio, hungry and decided to go inn for a bite and give it a try. Initially one star. I had a real problem on one visit. I got brewed coffee and it was lukewarm. The next day, the staff person was unhelpful and even insulting. Follow-up: After Rachael the manager replied to my review, she called me to discuss the problem. The customer service to handle the problem was really impressive. I will definitely go back to Siphon. Opened in 2014 by Michael Caplan, Siphon sets itself apart using its namesake Siphon coffee methods, and by being known as "a high end coffee shop." Inside you get a modern take on rustic Western with leather furniture, an old piano and old siphon coffee makers all around. Pictures of Texan musicians decorate the walls looking down on the many college students or other people you can spot getting work done. Inside there is a lively atmosphere full of people talking with friends and sipping coffee or one of the other many drinks they offer. There is a relatively small outdoor space where you can sit. There were tables that could accommodate from 1-4 people, but also a bar looking out over the window where you could fit many more people. There were also two seats where you could sit right next to where the coffee was being brewed and the food was being served. We enjoyed tart orange juice with the pulp still inside giving it a satisfying texture; it was cold and refreshing. The muffin we had was served warm with cranberries inside and was flaky and moist with a sweet crumble on top. There was also delicious creamy hot chocolate along with, of course, siphon coffee. Siphon coffee is a method of brewing by using halogen burners to give the coffee a specific taste. As well as having light bites, they also offered sandwiches, eggs and foods that could serve as a more substantial meal. In the end, everyone liked what they ordered, however, the portions were bigger than most of us could eat. One downside we faced was that the service at the restaurant did not stand out as particularly fast in any area. We were waiting a while to get our food, and some people had to go up and remind them what they had ordered. Despite this the rest of our stop was enjoyable. Overall we had a pleasant experience at this modern coffee shop with a great atmosphere to sit, get some work done, enjoy a relaxing meal with friends, or just watch some Siphon coffee being made. read more

Let me start off by saying that I've only tried a limited selection of the food/coffee offered by siphon in my 3 visits. The coffee is consistently good and the lattes/expresso is outstanding. I believe they use whole milk in their lattes which result in a very rich and creamy beverage. Drink prices are consistent with others in the area, except for the "siphoned" coffee which is produced using exotic means. $7/little beaker (maybe 1.5 cups) is stupid expensive and tasted like normal coffee. The food I've tried (breakfast tacos/salumi) is below average and way overpriced. The tacos weren't seasoned, generally bland, and small ($3 each! Not sure if they understand their competitors). The salami was also lacking in flavor. Overall I'd highly recommend coming to grab delicious drinks but avoid the food. read more

I tried really hard to like Siphon. I've been there multiple times, and every time it takes me fifteen minutes just to get a coffee and a pastry, I swear I'm never going back. Then I decide to give them another chance. I used to be a barista, and I have a lot of sympathy and compassion for what it's like to be behind that counter. I'm done with Siphon after yesterday. Once again, all I wanted was a drip coffee and a scone. They asked me if I wanted it warmed up and I said yes, thinking it would only take a few minutes. Fifteen minutes later, I was still hanging around the bar waiting for it and had to verbally ask them about it. I initially had plenty of time to eat it there, but had to take it to go by the time they actually gave it to me. This is not an isolated incident--this is my Siphon experience every single time I walk through the door. It's not fun to go to a place where you have to constantly check in with the staff about your order--after you've paid and tipped, I might add--for a coffee and a pastry. What exactly is the problem? I can't figure it out. The most I can tell is that they are either severely understaffed or have an incredibly inefficient way of processing orders. Whatever the case, I'm done putting up with it. Blacksmith's coffee is just as good as Siphon's, if not better, and they seem to be able to manage delivering food and drinks in a timely and professional manner. read more

Came in for coffee and a quick breakfast on a Friday morning. First of all, the parking situation when I went, was awful. The lot was full as expected, but the street was closed which is where I was told extra parking is. I just did a few laps and waited for someone to leave to take their spot. I came in planning to get the breakfast taco because they were highly reviewed, and when I ordered it I was told they just ran out of the stuff for tacos. Looking around it seemed everyone in there with food had tacos so I was very disappointed about that. Instead I got the breakfast panini by recommendation of the barista and an iced vanilla latte. I took a seat and waited for my food and drink. I saw a sandwich sitting up at the counter but no name had been called. A few more minutes went by with no name called. A few minutes later they called my name for my drink and when I went up to grab it, I looked and the sandwich that had been sitting out was indeed mine. The actual coffee and sandwich were very good. However I felt like I left still hungry and still wanting more coffee. I came here on recommendation from a friend and was pretty disappointed, but am willing to give it another go because I want to try the breakfast taco, and like I said the coffee was good, it's just unfortunate about parking, running out of ingredients, and letting my sandwich sit without calling a name. read more

Siphon is definitely an early afternoon spot, it was extremely packed when I arrived at 1pm. I was greeted by a young lady behind the counter and she informed me to go to the other side when I was ready to order. Fair enough! Love the option to not only get coffee, but wine as well and they had some pretty good happy hour options. $5 burgers on Tuesday's!! The POS system was facing towards me and I thought i was supposed to put my own order in. So I started typing away.. Oy vey! When I eventually received my coffee, it was in a to go cup, even though I asked for it there, so I didn't get to take a cute picture. Not to mention it was lukewarm. I ordered a coconut mocha latte, so it was flavorful, but not very strong. I love the decor and lounge setting, but it doesn't come equipped with many outlets which is a huge bummer and also a MUST for me since I have a MacBook and do heavy editing. The location of this place and the staff friendliness, cleaniness (except this one annoying fly keep buzzing around ) and the services received - it even got an old school arcade game machine in the middle of the shop, and of course the latte art was on point, I mean it's DANK! Have sufficient seating with wall outlets and extension plug-in everywhere, private parking lot, safe area - left my lap top on the back seat all morning and it was fine (yeah, a fake one to see how people react), clean restrooms, good place to work, small meetings, study, or just to hangout, even the music was good and easy listening. So ... WHY do I rate it at a low 3 ? because of the actual merchandise / product offered at a coffee shop. I ordered a coffee latte, and a protein quiche. the latte tasted an average taste, at first I was supprised to see Stump Town, but once I let my taste buds to the rating this place stars ti be a disappointment. The quiche was also just average, as if it came out of the freezer at Costco and just heat it up on microwave ... over all was $12 including a small tip. I hate to blast a place but this was a bit much. Lattes were fabulous. Food could have been good but my order was wrong three times. Ordered two tacos each with added bacon and avocado. One came out with added bacon and no avocado. The other didn't come out. I watched other orders come out. I saw a guy return his breakfast taco which sat on the counter for a while. So I asked about mine. "Oh, I'll check". Then I saw the returned taco go to the back and come out as mine. They didn't even bother to change the tin foil- just added avocado, forgot the bacon and tried to pass it off as fresh. I know it was the same one because they even put it back in the guy's brown to go bag. Yuck. The staff seemingly could not have cared less. Used to love this place, but they have let me down so many times that I can't go here anymore. Here are my cons: - always crowded, difficult to find a spot - long lines and wait times - overrated coffee, with the quality especially noticeably decreasing in the past year or so - parking is sometimes unavailable - rude baristas The last two times I went, my drink orders have been messed up. Once, I ordered an iced drink and received a hot one, and when I asked for the iced drink, the barista just shrugged his shoulders at me. I had to go ask another staff member, and when it clearly showed that I had ordered an iced drink, did they grudgingly make a second drink for me. The time before that, I asked for a hot caramel latte, and received one that tasted like it was made with spoilt milk. It was so bad that I had to bring it to the barista, and they said, "SO do you want another drink?" in a rude manner. I felt terrible asking them to make another drink, even though it wasn't my fault that the first one tasted rotten. The second one turned out terrible too, but at least it didn't taste spoilt. Nice coffee shop tucked away in a cramped strip center. Tried the Americano which didn't leave much of an impression. The place was too crowded and noisy for my tastes. It was hard for me stay focused on my work and the seating was not all that comfortable. Overall,there was nothing special about the place that I would think warranted a special visit if you lived across town. I've tried many coffee shops in Houston and I want to like this one more, I hope to give it a second chance one day. The ambience is there and I love the furniture but it was very crowded. This should speak to their popularity, but if you're going there to study you need to get there early. The outdoor area is nice considering how small it is. They have wooden picnic benches and tables. Only one outlet I think outside. The coffee was very good, I got a cappuccino (my way to judge a coffee place). They got our order wrong, wish they had repeated it back, but they fixed it on the spot without complaint. Chorizo breakfast taco was amazing. The green salsa was interesting but I liked it. Kind of sweet. I want to return to give it another shot but I will have to get there early if I want to stay longer. read more

This is a really nice spot to hang out at or get some work done. They carry respectable coffee from various roasters and they can pull a solid shot of espresso (ristretto). They have every making to be a seriously amazing coffee shop. The siphon coffee takes a really long time to get because they use cold water and bring it up to a boil over a halogen burner. I would suggest using pre-heated water to speed the process up. 15 minutes for a cup of coffee is Portland-level slow. However, it is awesome that they use Heart beans (from Portland)..flavors tends to be on the brighter side FYI if you don't like the fruity/sourish notes. If that's so, go with the espresso drinks. The espresso is mellower. Also, for you drinkers reading, please don't ever mix cream into siphon coffee...that is the cardinal sin and you shall be forever barred from entering the gates of heaven. You deserve it. JK. At least take a few sips and enjoy the full bodied notes of the coffee, prior. One note on the siphon coffee, my cup came out a bit flat and watery. I'm assuming the grind or brew ratio is off? (Q: What ratio do you guys use?) Easy fix. Not something big enough to keep me from revisiting, but hopefully it is a one-off event. The place was packed to the brim, and literally people were waiting behind chairs with the hope that the person sitting would get annoyed and leave!! Pretty sweet ambiance and totally reliable wifi. I especially love their homemade spiced chai - I swear they must be requisitioning their spices from India direct!! Fun fact: the menu is actually sourced locally to help stimulate our beloved local economy. If you've never been, order a latte and let the barista wow you with froth art presentation. I've gotten everything from hearts, to smiles, to get this - a dog!! That reminds me, bring the pup - dogs are welcome on the outside terrace. Ignore the haters complaining about price point and hipsterish vibes. The price is comparable to Starbucks and if you fear hipsters, maybe you should just go to Starbucks. The space has a great contemporary and slightly industrial feel, which really appeals to me. The space has concrete floors, wood, metal, and leather. The bar by the windows has outlets underneath, but otherwise charging may be an issue. Their restrooms use a key from the bar, which I find a lil awkward (maybe they had previous issues?). Parking is a lil tight, but we did find a table to work at. Atmosphere was a lil noisier (more hustle and bustle), than some coffee shops, but not surprisingly loud. For coffee, they serve coffee made from Boomtown and Amaya beans, both are good, but not the most unique. They offer fresh pastries and real food. I was excited that they offer ginger snaps, something that reminds me of home, made fresh with large crystal sugar. Service was great, as well. Super friendly! We liked the place and the food and coffee. Unfortunately, our biggest issue was that the internet is very flakey, and you cannot do any sort of work, there. My absolute favorite place!! I moved to Katy and they even taught me how to make the espresso at home! Walked me through the process of making the perfect latte! I go by sally here since it's just easy to pronounce so everytime I come inside they know me right away! Chelsea and Lawrence are the best. I visited Siphon for the first time on a Thursday morning around 10am. I took my laptop and made it my office for the day which is great for the following reasons: - Fast, unlimited wi-fi. Outlets all over the restaurant. - Plenty of indoor seating (tables, counters, comfy chairs, bar stools, etc.) Most ppl have their computers and are posted up for several hours. - The siphon coffee is fun to watch when it's being brewed, many ppl order it throughout the day and so it brings a different dynamic to your typical coffee house environment. - Menu is unique from other coffee shops and it transitions from am to pm. Before noon, you can order empanadas and breakfast tacos. Afternoon, they offer a great selection of paninis and salads. Pastries are available throughout the day. - Staff is incredibly warm and friendly, I noticed the banter between the staff and several regulars. They were very attentive to me and anything I needed, as I was there for over 4 hours. Pros- A lot of seating if you want to stay awhile. Excellent food options. The siphon coffee is delicious and it's rare to watch it brew like this. Eclectic decor (there is a table for 2 with a vintage video game on it!) Plenty of self parking. Friendly staff. Laid back atmosphere with chill music. Huge windows offer a lot of natural light. Cons- A siphon coffee for one is $7, normally I spend $2 or less for a coffee, so this is quite the jump! Paninis are about $12 and served with plain chips, or there is a $2 upcharge to substitute a salad. I thought this was high for a simple lunch. (Breakfast options are much cheaper, $3, $4, $5). This will be a two part review. Customer Service - I am here right now and so far I am not impressed. You have 5 people standing in line and 6 people behind the counter, five of which are chatting each other up and having what appears to be their own little coffee tasting. I was given a beeper for my food. When it was ready I asked about my iced tea and the girl behind the counter directed me to the dirty water glasses behind me and tea container. There is no ice so when I asked, the gentleman behind the counter said "oh we didn't give you a glass?" So he got me a glass and I got my tea. They of course ask you for a tip when you are paying with your credit card with suggestions on what to tip based on their sevice I guess. The Food - The panini I ordered was served luke warm with a bunch of broken up potato chips. The sandwich is uninspired and not worth 11.00 they charged for it. If you are going to charge a premium price you need to make a great sandwich. This sandwich was barely worth 3.00. The lethargic customer service, lack of caring attitude and sub par food will be their demise unless they fix these issues. read more
