Well smoked meats, substantial portions, and lovely outdoor seating perfect for the ensuing mess of properly enjoying the bbq. I was a little disappointed that the pickles (we sampled both the fried and regular varieties) weren't made in house. Both sauces were a bit sweeter than I usually prefer, but still very tasty, with the "hot" sauce only having a bit of heat at the very end. My 8yo really enjoyed a mix of the two and put it on everything while making "yum yum" noises, so it's very much a win. Over all, darn tasty and well worth another visit. read more

Took my out-of-town bestie to Slaps so she could try a real taste of KC BBQ! I love Slaps. We ordered the burnt ends combo with pulled pork, baked beans, cheesy corn and an extra side of fried pickles. The food never disappoints! The only downside was the hour long wait in line in the blazing hot sun. They could use some shade for that wait, and even some water coolers would be nice. Long wait means good food for sure! They are doing some renovation so the bathrooms were a bit of a mess. But the patio area and upper deck provide plenty of seating! Recommend ordering online and doing a pickup to avoid the line! I finally was able to dine-in at Slap's and I'm happy to report that the experience, well, slaps! See what I did there? If you dine-in expect a line. We showed up maybe 30 minutes after they opened and there was already a line down the block. I will say though, it moves fairly fast. Expect a cafeteria style set up when you walk in. There is a bar immediately to the left of the door so you can sip on a beer while waiting once you get indoors, and from there it moves really fast. Be sure to order some of the baked potato casserole (seriously to die for), and then snag a picnic table in the dining area adjacent. If it's a nice day they also have outdoor seating. If you are worried about finding a spot I'd encourage you to go early, and go on a nice day so that if you need to sit outside that isn't an issue. Overall though, I really think this might be the best 'q in the city right now so stop what you're doing and go get some award winning smoked meats! read more

I came here on the recommendation that this is the best BBQ in Kansas City. If this is what Kansas City BBQ has to offer I will never trust a midwesterner to recommend a restaurant again. I ordered the cattleman plate with baked beans, Mac and cheese, and fried pickles on the side. The brisket was dry and looked like overcooked tri tip. Definitely the lowlight of the meal. I've made far better brisket at home and I've only ever cooked brisket twice. The burnt ends were uneventful. I was looking forward to these the most but they were soggy and lacked the texture I was hoping for. The polish sausage was alright. It's sausage. It's not what you came for. Mac and Cheese was the other lowlight of the meal. It tasted like they use velveeta or something. Tasted cheap and lacked any real flavor. I actually enjoyed the baked beans and fried pickles but this is a bbq joint and you don't go out of your way for baked beans. I am basically a sponge when I go to a new city. I try to ask everyone for recommendations and their favorite spots to eat and drink. While I am no stranger to Kansas City, and have tried a number of their BBQ offerings, I was so thankful that the front desk staff at my hotel was adamant that we go to Slap's BBQ while we were in town. Once we got into town, we were relaxing in our hotel, we grabbed a drink by the pool, got situated in our room, and then decided to go get supper. We rolled up at 6:55 PM and we're greeted in the parking lot with the staff member to tell us that they were out of food and not taking any more customers. while I was extraordinarily saddened, I was happy to hear they would be open at 11 AM on Sunday. Needless to say we went back... When we got there the line was probably 12 people deep and I knew I was willing to stick it out, but I heard someone talking about ordering online. I hopped on their website, put in my order, and my mom and I went across the street to enjoy a local coffee shop until our food was ready. Something like 15 minutes later we were able to walk back across the street, go directly to the pick up window, grab our food, and snag a table to dig in! I knew I wanted to try the burnt ends and when I saw that I could get that as a combo with an additional meat and two sides, my mind was made up. I opted for the brisket, even though I would have loved to have tried a number of them, and the staff member at the hotel said their potato salad was the best and for my final choice I went with cheesy corn. The burnt ends and the brisket were perfectly tender. You could taste the smoke, and those burnt ends, still retained so much moisture and flavor. She was definitely right about the potato salad... I don't know what in the world is in this, but you have to try it. The cheesy corn for me was a different story... I certainly wasn't a fan and wished I would have opted for something else. I know, I was surprised as well. There were just so many other good sides available that I wish I would have tried. There were two sauces and both were incredible. One was on the sweeter side and one was spicier. Normally I go for spicy, but I really enjoyed the sweet barbecue! - this isn't the MOST accessible restaurant, but at least there are no stairs. There is also a ramp to get into the screened in outdoor seating on the side in addition to the main entrance of the restaurant. The rooftop seating looks pretty awesome, but obviously is not accessible. there are also picnic tables out in front that are accessible. They just don't have any shade. - this is a little tricky and in short supply. I think I found one or two handicap accessible spots. There is one on the street and I believe there is one in their parking lot. Their parking lot was almost always full, but if you are patient and creative, you should be able to find a spot on the street. read more

Overall thought the pork ribs and the burnt ends were the stars and should absolutely be bought as add on. They were the most flavorful and tender parts of the plate. The cheesy corn was unique and good as well. The pulled pork, turkey were both under seasoned and alright. The Mac and cheese was under seasoned as well and forgettable. The brisket was some of the most pathetic I've ever had. Chewy, not tender, under seasoned. My god, this place lives up to its name, it SLAPS! There is a reason there is a line out the door most of the day (but it moves pretty fast). Nothing was a miss, it was all right on the mark. The brisket was the right amount of smoke and had a good tear. The grind on the sausage was a little too fine for my liking, but I still jammed it in my face. By FAR the best ribs I've ever had, EVER. Their sauce is quite sweet for my taste, but that's KC BBQ, I enjoyed the spicy sauce much better. All the sides were awesome, but rich. Slaps BBQ is one of the best bbq places in Kansas City. It can be easily missed but once you walk in you know you are in a place that is special. There is usually a line but it moves at a fast and efficient pace. There aren't any indoor dining spots but they have a patio with picnic tables and they do a great job of keeping the patio heated. I got the sampler plate which includes brisket, chicken, sausage, burnt ends with two sides. All of the meat was delicious some of the standouts were the brisket, jalapeno cheddar sausage, and burnt ends. My first time to Slaps. Heard about them. They won the 2025 Lenexa BBQ championship, so I thought I'd try them. They open at 11am, but when I got there at 11:20, there was already a line out the door. They're fast, though - waited about 20 minutes, but once I ordered, I had my food in 3 minutes! I ordered the Sampler plate with extra ribs. Let me tell you, those ribs just fell off the bone and melted in my mouth! The smoked turkey was excellent (definitely smoked). I'm not a big fan of Polish sausage, but I ate it and took the leftovers home. Brisket - spot on! Watch out ! The Jalapeños are definitely spicy. I want to try the baked potato casserole next time. Once you're seated, plenty of napkins, utensils, and take-home trays. You can sit in a covered patio or on a covered patio rooftop. Parking could be an issue - probably because it's in central KCKS and it's so popular. It's not very difficult to find good BBQ in KC, but this small hole in the wall (their smokers might be bigger than their restaurant!!!) is a keeper. I'll be back! read more

We had The BBQ Sampler plate with Smoked Turkey, Spare ribs, Brisket, Sausage, and we added The Smoked Burnt Ends. For sides The Smoked Baked Bacon Beans, The Bacon Mac & Cheese and The Warm Baked Potato Casserole. All were fantastic. All the meats were excellent with The Smoked Burnt Ends being our Favorite. I bumped my review to 4 because they treat customers right. Ribs were tender and came off the bone easily but not too easy that they were mush. Brisket was just ok. Burnt ends were tender large chunks. I enjoyed the burnt ends but maybe I don't understand because I thought that they would be more caramelized from the burning and the sauce. Instead it was healthy chunks of darker meat. But quite good. Not a fan of the fried pickles. They give a healthy portion of food, so we had leftovers. Baked Potato casserole was relatively mild but tasty. Waiting line moved quickly, servers are pleasant. I would go again. I thought it was a myth, but the rumors are true. SLAPS HAS TACOS. On Tuesday of course. I got here around 4:30 pm on a Tuesday and they were on their last tray of taco meat. You can get pork or burnt ends and they loads them up w grilled peppers, onions, cilantro and a chipotle sauce. This place does not get enough credit as one of the best BBQ places in KC. I love the food here. I also like that it has the "traditional" set up of a bbq joint in KC. You walk up to a counter then grab your food on a tray before getting a table. The sausage and the burnt ends are my favorite. I also love the beans and cheesy corn. The staff is friendly but also wants to keep the line moving. There's no yelling in your face but a friendly nudge to get your order in. Every time I've been the food is amazing. The parking lot gets full and when they are packed it can be hard to find a seat. Luckily when the weather is nice, there is an awesome outdoor patio. We literally drove across state borders to try this place. (Granted, it was only 15 minutes away since we were in Kansas City, MO - but still). Cannot tell you how stuffed we were at the end but we managed to finish almost all of it (except the bread and coleslaw). So worth it. Everything was flavorful, juicy and delish. It was by chance I made the short drive over into Kansas KC territory on a hunt for a satisfying BBQ lunch before heading back to South Dakota. I was initially sad to see my usual go-to spot was closed, but the BBQ gods had something much better for me in mind. The building Slap's is housed in is very short of fancy and especially deceiving in size. From the street, it looked like an unassuming, small building that was too small to house more than 4 people at a time. However, I quickly realized that was not the case, as there was an enclosed, heated patio space with several tables out back! Upon walking in, I got a big Midwest welcome, paired with the friendliest smiles I'd ever seen on a cold, gray snowy day. I mean it folks, if you need something to cheer you up, the "service with a smile" is enough to at least fill up your soul...but of course don't forget the BBQ!!! GET THE BURNT ENDS. If you read/recall anything out of this novella-of-a-review, please just remember to get the burnt ends! You are going to be hard pressed to find better anywhere in the KC area--this is coming from someone who used to religiously visit another joint, but they were closed. Then, get some fixins to go with--contrary to whatever your anti-veggies/non-meat sides friend says--real BBQ lovers know you need a little bit of contrast to balance out the sweet heat of the meat. I was in Kansas City recently for a few days and I knew I really wanted to hit up both Joe's and Slap's BBQ based on my research. I showed up at around 11:05am on a Friday and there was already a line out the door. The line actualy took a while, maybe about 20-30 minutes at least. This place is a casual spot where you just order your food and take it to a table, so there is no server service and no obligation to tip. There are a bunch of tables set up for seating and I had no problem finding a seat for myself after I got my food. I ended up getting the burnt ends combo ($16.49) and a soda ($1.75). With tax included, I paid $19.90. The combo comes with burnt ends, an additional meat (I chose brisket), 2 sides (I chose mac and cheese + baked beans), bread, jalepenos, and pickles. I noticed they don't give you an overwhelming amount of meat, but I was definitely very happy with the amount of food I got overall. So digging in, the burnt ends were definitely spectacular. Extremely flavorful, perfect amount of fattiness, and soo good. The brisket wasn't as mind blowing as the burnt ends, but definitely excellent overall. I had the brisket from Joe's BBQ the day before, and the brisket at Slap's was definitely better in comparison. The sides were excellent too. The baked beans were a lot thicker and molasses-like than Joe's. I liked Joe's baked beans better, but still loved the baked beans at Slap's. And the mac and cheese at Slap's has bacon in it, which is cool. It was actually a bit too heavy with bacon added IMO, but still very tasty. I'm glad the pickles and jalapenos were there to cut through the grease a bit. I actually finished the whole thing and was happy and stuffed at my meal's conclusion. Coming from NY, I was pleasantly surprised at the value you get at the BBQ places in KC. To get all that great food for under $20 at Slap's was excellent. And the burnt ends were definitely a great signature item to remember the meal by. So 5 stars all day for this place. read more

I'd put Slaps in the middle of the KC BBQ pack. The pulled pork was good, not insanely great. The turkey tasted a bit overly processed but texture was acceptable. The sausage was smoky and very good.
