I really wanted to like Slurp Slurp more, but some things were just too salty for me. The noodle with pork in soy sauce (炸醬麵) sauce was tasty but extremely salty, even for a black bean sauce. The pig ear and beef tendon in the combo appetizer plate (拼盤) were also a bit salty, probably stewed in too salty of a base. The saltiness aside, the knife cut noodles (刀削麵) were phenomenal, truly chewy and the highlight of the meal. The broth of the oxtail noodle soup was very tasty but I will echo other Yelpers' comments that it is five spice heavy in flavor, and the oxtail meat itself was very hard and chewy (not cooked long enough). The interior is lovely and service is fine, though our waitress did forget to bring our waters so I had to ask someone else for them. The other positive point about Slurp Slurp is the prices (very reasonable), especially for the portion sizes you get. Really casual restaurant, no frills and fast. Interior is clean and always reasonably full but never crowded. I love knife shaven noodles (not sure if the right English phase for it?) and Slurp Slurp has a solid option. The broth is fairly light and not too salty, and I felt like needed a bit of hot sauce but paired well with the noodles. The noodles were really solid - came out firm and with a good bite and texture. The right shape and I didn't feel like the bowl had a ton of thin slivers that sometimes happen with bad knife shaven noodle bowls. I love noodles so to have a good bowl of well done, al dente soup noodles can fix a lot of faults with the rest of the dish for me. The bowls are really large here and plentiful for one person, but not enough for 2 to split. Lots of noodles in the broth. The veggie bowl comes with meat broth, according to the waitress, so vegetarians beware. It's an ok option when you're not feeling any meat options, but comes with what feels like are a ton of just frozen veggies that have been boiled in broth. Very generic and doesn't add much to the dish. Their meat options come topped with a few slices of meat but isn't really huge in topping portion, and their broths I think are all the same regardless of topping. Was driving around Chicago Chinatown having a hard time deciding where to stop in for lunch but good fortune sent me here for 2 reasons: As I was on Wentworth Ave, a crazy old Chinese lady pulled out of her curb parking spot almost ramming me in the process but opening up a spot for me to slide into (I learned early on when a parking spot opens up in any Chinatown worldwide, don't be stupid and take it. Given how valuable Chinatown parking is, if you even have to think about this, you are simply robbing the planet of oxygen.) Upon parking, I looked up and this silly little cartoon character of Slurp Slurp signage fame was staring at me from the shop in front of where I parked. How could I not go in? Once inside, I have to say it checked all my adventurous foodie boxes for me. All Asian staff. All Asian customers. Offal on the menu (Intestine soup anyone?). Hand pulled noodles. Chili oil and vinegar as well as pickled mustard green condiments on the table. Friendly and quick staff that also can speak English. Oh, and amazingly enough to find in Chinatown, they take credit cards including American Express. The food was inexpensive, tasty and comforting. Portions were not huge but neither was the bill. The noodles for me were a bit on the overcooked side but the herbal based broth made up for it. Although there was a small little window where you can view them make the noodles, it made the experience a little dull. I ordered the beef rib with noodles and was excited to try it. We also ordered the wide noodle stir fry as well to try as a group. The beef rib noodle dish was good but not great. You can't really serve soup in paper bowls so they were ceramic. Chicago was hit hard by the pandemic and these were the precautions we were taking. Second, I've never had a problem with the staff or food here. They don't speak great English and there are no thank you or your welcomes exchanged. However, if you are not from Chicago, and especially if you are from a smaller area, remember, you are in a big city where we are not the nicest people. I'm from Chicago, I'm used to it. Don't expect people to be super friendly. Go in for great food, eat and get out. Third, I can't say much for the menu. I am a creature of habit. After you choose your menu item, you get to choose between hand pulled noodle which are long or knife cut noodles which are a bit thicker. We decided to get two types of dry noodles because it was a hot day. The first one was knife cut noodles with brisket. It also came with red onions and boy choy to add in some colour. Authentic Lanzhou flavors and fresh hand made noodles that has a bounce in them, the so called Q factor! The taste is quite balanced, not overpowering or salty. Add you can see in the the broth which is clean and clear, that's goes for the flavors too. The big bowl comes with beef brisket, beef spare rib, sliced beef shank, and beef stomach and all are a delight. The broth is amazing. Fast cooking, nice interior, reasonable prices... this restaurant does have some potential for greatness. But since I just spent a month in China, Hong Kong, and South Korea before visiting this restaurant -- I can see where the criticism from other writers comes in. One good thing about this restaurant is that it offers hand-pulled noodle (pretty rare in Chicago) and shaved noodles (even more rare). One bad thing is that it's not exactly the best version of either noodle I've had, not even in Chicago. The noodles did have a nice bouncy texture and chewiness to them, but wasn't done so well that I was excited about every bite. Lu's, Lao Sze Chuan, Xi'an Cuisine, Chengdu Impression, etc. are other places you'd probably remember the noodles more (although being spicy, that might contribute to it). Next is the broth --- which is kind of rich, but also tastes kind of generic. It's good for serving large bowls of noodle quickly but really all the different items I had in there between different bowls (lamb, pork belly, beef brisket, beef shank, sliced beef shank) feel like they were just completely separate add-ins inside the same generic base (compared to say Strings Ramen which has a lot of contrast between different styles of broth). The meats were also pretty standard in preparation, not too different from what you'd expect at other restaurants in Chinatown. To be truly special, it would be nicer if the grade was a little higher or finer cuts of meat were offered. So -- this is a bit of a confusing restaurant as most hand-pulled noodle shops offer a more premium experience -- but they do have noodles that resemble what you'd get at restaurants in China (which no joke -- can be anywhere from 50 cents to 2 dollars a bowl and fantastic). They get a bump up to 4 stars because of the unique offering but should probably go towards premium offerings instead of the confusing mix of premium noodles with uninspiring flavor combinations you can find anywhere else in Chinatown. There's an increasing amount of fresh noodle options opening in the area and I wouldn't try to compete on price differentiation when each new competing restaurant will continue to drive prices down. read more

I love slurp slurp for those cold days and days where I'm craving soup. It hits the spot every. single. time. I'm a fan of the shaven noodles. Those thick fat noooooooodles. My go to is the oxtail soup with shaven noodles. The soup has a strong taste of star anise but I love it. I would recommend getting a bowl size appropriate to your appetite as the shaven noodles don't taste good as leftovers. But the hand pulled noodles do! I wasn't hungry so I just ordered the pork and chives dumpling apetizer. It came with a nice dipping sauce and was tasty. They also had a container of pickled veggies on the side of the table as a condiment and I ate that with my dumplings. Here's my PROBLEM: The table had a sign that said "free appetizer if we post a picture on their slurp slurp facebook account". I asked our waiter about it and she told me I just have to show her the picture and I'll get a free appetizer. So I take a picture of the noodles and post the FB picture and showed it to one of the waiters (different waiter) and all he said was "ok" and walks away.... So I just assumed that my dumpling appetizer would be free. After we finish our food, the waiter dumps the check on my table and leaves. I look at it, and I see that they charged me for my dumpling. I walk up to the counter and ask them about the free appetizer, and then she tells me the free appetizer is only for the cucumber salad. NOT the dumplings or any other appetizer..I didn't wanna make a big deal out of it since I was gonna order my dumplings with or without the "free", so I paid whatever I had to and left. They asked if i wanted the cucumber salad, but we already finished eating so whats the damn point. I'm pissed at the lack of communication. Not 1 of the 2 waiters I inquired about this free apetizer told me it HAD TO BE THE CUCUMBER SALAD, and both failed to serve it to me. Never coming back here. read more

There was one thing that drew me to the doorstop of Slurp Slurp. Aside from the hilarious name, it was the fact that it advertised having Knife Cut/Shaved Noodles! Such a craft of noodle that I think more people should be exposed to because it is absolutely delicious. Came in here with a large group of Asians that all love noodles. We can be hard critics, but the hand pulled and shaved noodles here at SS was freaking delicious. I ordered a bowl of Lamb Shaved Noodles ($8.95), and with the power of FOMO, decided to order a fried egg to go on top of the noodles. Less than ten minutes later, the steaming bowl of noodles had arrived. The shaved noodles here were on point! I absolutely love the texture and prefer these over regular hand-pulled noodles. At each table is a small jar of chili sauce, and I swear that they've added something else to it because there is definitely a nice kick to it. I wish I had a bottle to myself! Also, that fried egg on top was homemade and bomb. Definitely order one for yourself! Service was great, food was delicious, and I am so down to come back again for some more shaved noodles. read more

Went for a late lunch and a place to get some work done. I LOVE noodles so I thought I'd give it a try. Ordered a spare rib thin noodle soup. I tried make my order have the new Ma La (Szechuan spicy) flavor, but I couldn't figure out if that was a dish on it's own or something you can change in the flavor. It was extra for the Ma La "flavor" and for a tea egg. My noodles were well cooked, the meat was very tender. The flavor however was definitely not "Ma La" (I'm from that region and cook that alot) - it was a very heavy five spice flavor. While five spice does include similar ingredients to Ma La (Sichuan pepper and red chili oil), the taste is very different - tasted heavily of star anise. I ended up spending $16 on the noodles alone due to the add-ons. The staff is very friendly. I pulled out my laptop to work and the waiter immediately ran over to ask if I need the wifi password. There was a nice flow of people (3PM), not to crowded but always 3-4 tables filled, so it's a good place to chill and work with a nice hearty meal. I recommend just getting a regular $8 noodle dish with no add-ons or the big bowl $13.95 to share. I enjoyed my noodle experience and a 3-star mostly because of the "ma la" flavor fiasco. Located in the heart of Chinatown on Wentworth, Slurp Slurp offers a simple menu consisting of soup and stir fry using their in house hand pulled and sliced noodles. You choose! Service on a Thursday evening was attentive and nice. The interior is straightforward, and seats small or large parties depending how busy it is. Fortunately i didn't have to wait for a table around 6:30 pm. The wait time was standard for the food, if not faster than expected. The noodles in these dishes don't seem to have an end in sight as you slurp it up, but that's certainly a great "problem" to have. The kitchen causing know what they're doing with the noodles. Not overcooked, and not trying to do too much with their menu. There are some appetizers available, but the pork and chive dumplings are a must try. These feel very homemade, and what's inside goes wonderfully with the vinegar sauce that comes with the plate. I wish there were more places that made their own noodles like Slurp Slurp, but this is a great start and I look forward to coming back! read more
