Definitely a new favorite for me! Fantastic house made vegan mocha. Got it cut with half oat milk, and it was a perfect level of sweetness. I am hoping they will begin offering a decaf espresso at some point, because it's nice to have the option of less caffeine with a sweeter drink. House made rooibos based chai was EXCELLENT! Again, diluted with some oat milk for perfect sweetness. LOVED the vegan muffin and chocolate pepita coffee cake (the latter was also gluten free -- which I usually dislike, but somehow they make it work perfectly here). I took a set of cinnamon donuts to a work site, and they went in a flash. They were similar to churros -- delicious! SUPER great vibe among staff. Everyone has been friendly, accommodating and genuinely concerned with providing a good experience and product. Smack Dab is a GREAT find! This and SOL on Howard are paving the way up north as worthy destinations. Both offer unique house made items that truly up the ante on the ho-hum carbon copy approach at many other places. read more

Delicious food with a cute vibe in Rogers Park! Even though they were pretty packed when I went, the staff was still kind and helpful. I ordered a sweet seasonal latte and the smoked salmon sandwich and it turned out to be a lot food. I took the rest home and enjoyed it later. read more

I am not an indulgent person when it come sto purchasing a dessert item or breakfast. At Smack Dab, however, I ordered a second guava donut because it was sooo good, and as someone visiting from out of state, I knew I wouldn't be able to come back for it any time soon. I was also touched by the kindness of every staff I interacted with during my visit. I will be back when I am in Chicago the next time. :) read more

While the donuts are delicious, they often run out. I have tried to go between the times of 1030-11am and they are out of 2 of 3 featured donuts. Also, I have waited for up to 10 min for a simple biscuit and jam when they are busy. I would think by now they would be keeping up better with supply and demand. More donuts please! read more

A love note to Smack Dab: I'm eating dairy free these days and you've put some joy back into my diet. Thank you for making vegan donuts, serving delicious coffee, and being nice to my toddler. I've been to smack dab several times for breakfast, to one pizza night and a few free community dinner nights. I can say that it was one of those neighborhood places that has come in and set the bar really high on every single level of their business. The food is really good and always fresh, coffee is fantastic, the service is friendly and welcoming, it's a really vibrant and comfortable restaurant atmosphere. The big plus is: I know that they are very conscious and involved about local issues and try to give back to our RP community regularly in many, many ways. It is really nice to see that making a return in our area, because RP always had businesses that have a solid sense of community like that (thinking to now defunct Heartland's early and long-forgotten mission as a prime example) I'm glad that SD stay true to the heart of the local culture-- but, as I've said, they've raised the bar on that standard while also running a great place to eat, which I appreciate a lot. You can feel their passion for their business, and it almost seems like a place like this couldn't possibly be real for all that it accomplishes-- but it is. The prices are fair considering their commitment to surrounding community and the high quality of food their serve in-house. I'm glad that they seem to be doing well! read more

I really wanted to like this place but had a few issues. I was only offered two choices of spreads for the biscuits. A weirdly sweet off tasting onion spread and a sweet tomato spread. I didn't like either so the waitress brought a mayo with something else in it that was edible. Why not offer a fruit spread? The prices were too high also. My friend was given a free donut because she had to wait 7 minutes longer than me. She didn't want it and passed it on to me. It was an oily cake donut with a sugary coating but the strong taste of salt overpowered the sugar taste. I took two bites and left it. Don't these cooks taste their food? That said, the biscuits and eggs were good. My cappuchino was good also but my friend but oat milk in hers and it was strange tasting. Her mistake and not the restaurant's. I will probably not go back here and will stick with M. Henry's not much further down Clark in Andersonville if I'm going to spend this amount of money or I'll make my own biscuits, coffee and eggs for 1/6th of the price . read more

The biscuits are nice and tasty, but are slightly overwhelming to the palate. Because of the strong aroma that is left on the tongue, i have to treat them as a delicacy as opposed to a piece of bread that i can just dive into. i never tried the breakfast sandwiches that the biscuits are used for (because im allergic to eggs) or the jam they have to offer (i may try it one day). The pumpkin bread and coffee bread have more of a subtle taste, and i can really dive into them. However, unlike other breads i have had, these taste compacted (probably because of the way they package them), which suffocates the moistness of the dough. In turn, it requires a bit more chewing to allow the bread and it's flavors to truly melt in your mouth. Nonetheless, they were still very tasty. The donuts are really expensive in my opinion (like $2.00/donut), especially for their size. Nonetheless, they are flavorful, but have a greasy undertone. You can actually taste the flavor of the grease in the donuts; which is confusing to the palate because im not sure if the other flavors that im tasting are moreso of the grease, or of the dough. i guess what im tryna figure out is if the greasy undertone was not there, would the other flavors (the blueberry, the pomegranate, the caramel) still be as poignant? i have eaten about five different donuts from here, and i really like them, but because of the greasy overtone, i also really don't like them... This is one of those places that i would only come to if i have a weird/unique/specific craving for what they have to offer. This means that the food wont be for everyone. It's not your usual and typically tasting donuts, bread, and biscuits. Nonetheless, i respect the culinary boundaries that they are pushing for. The food does taste healthy and very clean; while being comforting and friendly. Lastly, the staff is always friendly, polite and have chilled vibes. If it wasn't for the latter, i probably would give them 2 stars, because again, while the food is appealing, i cant see myself eating here everyday- my palate just wont tolerate the uniqueness of the flavorings and textures. i expect to be able to stop into the neighborhood cafe and grab a breakfast treat practically every day if possible, but you cant do that with Smackdab; you would be grastronomically overwhelmed. read more
