My wife had the shrimp and Caesar salad, both of which she really enjoyed. I went with the 16 oz. bone-in filet mignon, and it was outstanding--perfectly cooked, tender, flavorful, and exactly what you expect from a great steakhouse. A special mention to our server, Miguel, who was excellent throughout the evening. He was attentive, professional, knowledgeable, and made sure everything was taken care of without ever being intrusive. We had our company lunch here in an icon steakhouse in midtown. Their private room had tons of sweet, natural light. While it was pretty tight getting our crew into the building (bottleneck alert), the service was amazing, with our main host/waiter be super funny to boot. Had a mixed experience - it started with us being seated in such a cramped and awkwardly placed table. It was a small table right in front of some stairs and this entryway so my brother kept getting bumped into with everyone passing by so he had to resort to sitting on the same side of me. Again the table was small so sitting on the same side required a coordinated effort (pictures included). They might as well just repurpose the space OR sit one person there because it doesn't make a lot of logistical sense otherwise. Drinks: I got a French 75 which tasted pretty standard. I was surprised to be charged $18 for the Tito's vodka used so be warned (would've expected that price for a higher shelf vodka). My brother got a Jack & coke and he was quite content with the taste and size. Also worth noting that they charge $12/bottle for Panna still water and we got 2 bottles because we were thirsty and unaware of the upcharge. Entrees: We got the 16oz filet mignon that turned out to be bone in - it was moist but tasted a bit lacking & the Colorado lamb chops (4) that had a nice crisp on it and full of flavor. We got whipped potatoes as a side that was quite creamy & buttery but the portion was on the smaller side compared to what you'd expect for that price point. Overall a good steakhouse with tons of charm and class. I came here on a Friday for lunch during restaurant week. I ordered a 3-piece shrimp cocktail, a sirloin steak and a wedge salad. To start off, the service is good. Throughout the meal my server checked in and the food & coctails came out promptly. There were a few periods of time in which I went without water for a little while but that's a small gripe as I politely flagged some down from the bus boy both times. The shrimp cocktail was exceptional. Might have been the best I've ever had! Each shrimp was perfectly cooked, large, and the 2 sauces that accompanied the dish were delicious (standard cocktail sauce and a green creamy sauce). Wedge salad was good but felt it was unusual that the bacon was just strips of breakfast bacon as opposed to thick-cut which is what I typically see at other steakhouses. The steak was very good but fell slightly short of expectations. Maybe next time I would do a ribeye or porterhouse as those cuts are usually tastier and more consistent. The cook was fine but the steak lacked salt and was thinner than expected. There was a nice dry-age flavor which made it overall an enjoyable steak that I would consider better than average. Overall a 7.5 out of 10. I would come here again to try different cuts, and certainly would try and get here for the "weekend wine" dinner which is right up my alley. I am blown away from what a wonderful first dining experience I had at Smith & Wollensky! Making reservations on Open Table was quick and easy, I was able to book dinner reservations within the same week for 5:30pm on a weeknight. When we arrived, we were greeted very warmly by the host who had offered us to do a coat check. The restaurant has a old school look, elegantly decorated in mahogany everywhere. After being seated, we were greeted very warmly by our server Paulino. He is so personable and friendly, loved our dining experience here even more because of his hospitality. We ordered the Wollensky salad, the Porterhouse, the Filet Mignon for my daughters. The steaks were cooked so nicely and had great flavor. I even got to try a little bit of their house steak sauce but the steak was great by itself already. Our stomachs were so full and satisfied that we didn't have room for dessert but Paulino surprised my daughters with their delicious ice cream and slice of NY cheesecake. My husband's burger was such a delight as you can see from our photo, the presentation was on point. Jeff, the manager came over to see how our meal was and we got to talking. Stopped into this place for an evening cocktail and dessert. This was not too far from our apartment and very easy to get to. The restaurant was quite busy however the hostess was very accommodating, and since we were only having cocktails and dessert, she suggested that we sit at the bar, which was a great idea. The restaurant is beautiful on the inside, very traditional woodwork and architecture. I couldn't tell if I was in Chicago or New York City! We ordered Bailey's coffee which is prepared deliciously with the fresh whipped cream that was slightly sweetened and a perfect mix of Baileys creamer and coffee. For dessert, the bartender recommended the carrot cake, stating that it was the best carrot cake he's ever had... And he was right, it was a pretty good carrot cake. Had dinner at one of NYC's iconic steakhouses tonight with close family friends. The night was going great until something happened that honestly threw me off. I was holding my 3-year-old daughter's hand trying to find the restroom. Three waiters were standing off to the side near a cabinet/wall area. One of them pointed me the wrong way without me even asking anything. I smiled and nodded, thinking he was helping. Literally two steps later, I realized it was basically a dead end. Another waiter saw me looking confused and asked if I was trying to find the bathroom. I said yes, and he immediately pointed me back the other way -- the actual correct direction. That's when the first waiter shrugged, smirked at the coworker next to him, and loudly said, "Why? I don't speak Chinese." Completely changed the whole energy of the night. Honestly, I was shocked this happened at a place with this kind of reputation, especially in front of my daughter. What made it worse was how unapologetic he seemed -- no embarrassment, no acknowledgment, just acting like there was nothing wrong with it. I spoke to the manager afterward. He asked if I could point the waiter out, but by the time I looked back over, the whole group was suddenly gone. Felt pretty obvious they pulled him off the floor. They comped the sides and desserts afterward, but that doesn't change how disrespectful and racist the whole experience felt. My steak loving son visiting from Maine and my steak devouring NYC native dining partner choose to dine at Smith & Wollensky. We were fortunate to snag a reservation for 4 for a 8:15 pm seating on the Friday after Thanksgiving (all the while the native New Yorker gave us the history of this establishment). We were greeted, had coats checked and were brought to our table upstairs. Corner table, house was full. Cold draft from ventilation system was not desired nor appreciated. Water and drink orders filled while we perused the menu. For starters we chose: Caesar salad, shrimp cocktail, clams casino, calamari. Each of us thought at least one dish was fantastic, but each had his/her own fave and not so fave. I found the clams casino to be one of the best I had ever had, while no one else shared that view (but these are not clam lovers). 2 loved the calamari and salad and for the other two the dishes were OK, but nothing mind blowing. Entrees: chicken, hanger steak, sirloin steak, and lamb chops. While the sirloin was a disappointment, a tad chewy and lacking flavor, all the rest hit it out of the park. The lamb chops were spectacular, perfectfully cooked and perfectfully seasoned and the mint jelly was a remnant neither needed or wanted. The Hanger steak cut like butter and no sauce was needed. The chicken was moist and so flavorful. The creamed spinach was very good, although it deserves to be served in something other than a plain old boring bowl. Maybe something with a lid to keep warm on table. Hash browns were perfect, but too need a different serivng dish. The bread was great, the carrot cake was meh, and the cheesecake was delicious. Firstly, our server was very pushy and impatient when he was taking our order, because he would try and take our menus away when we haven't even made a decision. I also felt like he was looking down on us because his attitude/tone throughout the night was disrespectful and impolite. The quality of our food was also horrendous. We got the porterhouse and asked for it to be cooked medium. However, the meat was raw, and had a horrendous texture. Literally, we asked the server to cook the meat medium, and it was red/pink on the inside. We asked for a refire, but the meat was still undercooked. After about 3 more refires because of horrible service, the meat basically had a burnt crust, somewhat cooked inside, and still tasted bad. We ate everything because it would be a waste if we didn't, and it was time for the check. And of course, it took them 30 minutes to grab our check. There is no way it should take that long. Such a prestigious restaurant charging $155 for steaks should never have issues like this. Ever. I'm super disappointed that we couldn't have a nice dinner because the server was too good for us to be of service, and that the food was so average despite the price tag. It reminded me of other nice steakhouses I've been to. The service was excellent; several servers waited on us and all were very polite. We ordered the prime rib and rib steak, along with other side dishes and appetizers. The food was good. Taking into consideration the quality, taste and price, I would give it four stars. Tonight I went to the famous Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in New York. It's the restaurant Warren Buffett chose for lunch, so it has quite a history; the walls are covered with name tags from various celebrities. Their steaks were indeed delicious. The prime rib was incredibly tender, and the Cajun rib was very well-seasoned. Highly recommended! Recently, they've been having a "wine all you can drink" promotion after 8 pm. But with a yummy slab of prime aged beef on your plate, who wants to have an intimate convo anyway? I would have given the place five stars, but it seems my particular choices weren't optimal. I'm a sucker for trying new dishes, so when I saw Bone-In Filet Mignon on the Fall Menu I went with that. Unfortunately the meat was dry, gristly and bland, even kicked up with cajun sauce - unlike my partner's Bone-In Ribeye which was a tender, scrumptious cut of beef. Live and learn. Hash browns were a bit underdone, but the leftovers tasted delicious after some crisping in my oven the next day. Creamed spinach was scrumptious, a perfect balance of fresh leafy greens and sauce. (I personally dislike very creamy dishes). Service by Visar was impeccable; he even comped me a second glass of Pinot Noir when he saw my empty glass. At their prices this was no small favor! An icon of Midtown, Smith & Wollensky exudes tradition and craftsmanship from its decor down to its service. Our experience here was nothing short of an absolute pleasure and reaffirms the age-old belief in food service that a good staff can make or break a restaurant. We can (and will) go very far into detail on this one so buckle up... Before the food you are greeted by a doorman who is your first ward into the steakhouse. As the doors open up you are immediately hit with the decor of a place that feels historic and well seasoned. Even though they opened in the 70s, this steakhouse feels like it's lived a life many times over and certainly carries itself that way in its setting. We had a reservation for 2 and were promptly seated upstairs at our request. Upon sitting you are promptly given menus, walked through the wines and specials, and brought bread all within the span of about 2 minutes. The service here is impeccable and is a common theme we noticed throughout our meal. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, attentive, and a well oiled machine. There is not a second during that meal where we were without attention. Moving onto the food we had a good spread. You begin with a bread basket that features traditional white, pretzel, and a nut/raisin loaf as well. All good breads but be careful not to fill up on it. For steaks we ordered a NY sirloin medium and a prime rib medium rare, sides of whipped potatoes, two glasses of pinot grigio, and their chocolate cake for dessert. The steaks were incredible, both cooked specifically to what we requested. The sirloin had a nice subtle char and the flavor was fantastic. It was not tough whatsoever which is the common issue with this cut, just a great steak. As for the prime rib, it may be the best steak we've ever had. The flavor was outstanding, the texture perfect, all coming together into what you dream a steak should be. The whipped potatoes were also incredible, the best we've had as well. Incredibly light and subtle with more than enough flavor to convince you to focus on it in between bites of your steak. The wine was good as well, can't remember the exact name of it, but still good. Lastly, we grabbed some dessert with their chocolate cake (and a glass of milk) and that, again, was great. It was very rich and moist, a fitting finale for the rest of the meal we just had. Like any steakhouse, these cuts and service come at a premium. For what we paid, this was well worth the money. Every part of this restaurant exemplifies dignity, care for the patron, and a pursuit of higher dining. Have you ever eaten dinner where you had to wear your winter jacket, could see your breath, and your hot food got cold within minutes? Perhaps you were dining with our squad tonight in an outside table where it was 20 degrees outside and about the same at our table. We had no idea that this area wouldn't have working heaters but did have rain flaps that flapped in the wind because who in their right mind would pay for hundreds of dollars for a meal where they literally started to freeze? The chairs were metal and thankfully someone in our party asked that they bring us seat cushions because sitting on cold metal made it unbearable. Thankfully, cushions were provided as our food arrived. Other patrons were wearing gloves, hats, and jackets -- but because they didn't ask, they weren't given cushions. Our waiter was the best thing about the ordeal -- he was genuinely sweet and seemed to realize how ridiculous the situation was. We ordered tea and he brought us additional hot water and two members of our group ordered hot toddy's (off menu) that he was able to bring to us. The food: the split pea soup was good and I ate it before it got cold (ordered gluten-free by not having croutons), the spinach & oyster mushrooms were good too (though $16 for each is silly pricing), the filet mignon au poivre was okay, and the Cajun rib steak was okay. Everything though got cold within a couple of minutes. Imagine paying $82 for a steak that is cold less than 5 minutes after it gets to the table. Opportunities for improvement: 1) If you're going to offer an outside area during the winter, you need to ensure that any tarp extends to the ground so the winter winds are blocked. 2) The existing heaters are insufficient. You need heat lamps that are closer to the tables. 3) Cushions should be a bare minimum and no patron should have to ask for them. 4) The menu should specify what can be made gluten-free. It's a paper menu and you just need an icon. Or if you're hard-pressed add a message about speaking to your server about allergies. Our group's feeling: There are ~5 or so tables in this 'outside' area. Smith & Wollensky should know better than to subject its guests to these conditions. read more

Sorting through the reviews, I can see why the reviews are mixed. In my experience, we had a good dinner outing. This is probably one of the top steak houses for me in NYC. Food wise, fantastic. My husband has been trying to get here since I've known him so I figured we should go to celebrate our Honeymoon. Wellllllll, I'll never be going back. The food is just okay. Nothing special about anything I had. It was wine week and we decided to give their deal a go. It was $20 to try a variety of 10 wines. Well only 3 made it to us to try. I had a crab cake as an entry and my husband had tuna tartare. My crab cake was just okay. For our entree, I had a filet mignon and a 10oz lobster. The lobster was bland. Like very minimal seasoning to it and the lobster itself wasn't a great quality. The steak had a good char but not much seasoning. My husband had a prime rib. We had mushrooms, Brussels sprouts and spinach. Everything needed more seasoning. For a bill over $400, I don't expect to need to add anything to my food for it to Be flavorful.
