It wasn't out of this world but good. I would've liked it to have less cabbage. The rice was really good and I thought the beans were delicious. The burrito was average at best. Honestly this the fish taco version of Yolanda's: bland, white people Mexican food. I only come here because my wife likes the shrimp tacos. Luckily I have found that the breakfast burrito is decent to good, especially combined with shack sauce. They also have a couple good beers on tap. Otherwise this place is a hard pass, I've tried several of their plates and haven't found anything exciting, especially when there are so many good authentic Mexican places in Ventura and Spencer MacKenzies if you really want fish tacos. If they didn't have the shack sauce (+1 star) and good beer (+1 star) I would have a hard time finding a reason to come here. read more

I wish I could say better things, but our return to this place after 3 years or so did not hold up. We ordered two things -- one burrito and one 2-taco combo. What grinds my gears is that the taco combo, which comes with additional sides of rice and beans, is that the side portions were both small, very average tasting, and amounted to an extra SIX DOLLARS. I think it would be ok if it came with a drink, but it didn't. The steak tacos were good, and loaded with lettuce and cheese, but we ordered them without sauce -- they came with sauce -- and we found a little piece of hair. The shrimp burrito came with shrimp that was barely seasoned, if at all, and mainly consisted of rice, making the burrito very dry. If you add some salsa or shack sauce, that greatly improves the burrito. The food is decent to good, but not perfect (e.g. the hair) and very overpriced. Again, I wish I had better things to say, but I think you're better off going somewhere else. read more

Cute little location, with plenty of indoor and patio seating. No booths, but it is fine for a slightly more upscale place than fast food. Great salsa bar, although people clumsy like me will have a challenge scooping pico de Gallo into the little sauce cups. Red sauce a bit on the spicey side, that stays on your tongue for a bit. Green guacamole sauce which is a nice mild sauce. Okay pico de Gallo. A cantaloupe/honey dew mixture which wasn't hot nor salty, which is a nice change of pace from the others. I had the Cancun burrito. My initial reaction is that it's a bit pricey for a burrito at this type of place, but afterwards, I don't have major complaints, in getting filled up with a good meal at the end of a long trip. It had a good amount of shrimp, and avocados for sure. It's all mixed with a creamy sauce, and I don't know if there was crab in there, but I'm not the most observant person in detecting crab. A scattering of chips on top. A little bit of cheese was oozing out of the burrito, so I don't think it was the most meticulous burrito wrapping job I've seen, but that's a bit nit picking on my part, really it wasn't a bad job. read more

This was my first time here and I was having a really hard time deciding what to get because I was starving. I went with the battered fish tacos since I was near the beach. I ordered them a la carte which still came with chips and out to $11 and some change. Had I known it was the same price for the combo with side/beans I would have just done that. Instead I was given two baskets with 1 Taco in each and a side of chips. The taco and secret sauce was good once you finally got rid of all of the cabbage on top. So, I feel like this place has gone down hill over the years, not sure of they let their fame get to their head or if its because they opened a new site and they are letting their standard slip, who knows.. The last time I was in here I was really disappointed and grossed out. The only thing I order when I go here is potato tacos, now they are not the best (by far) but they are the closest thing around here to making them at home. On my last visit though they were so oily they were really inedible.. no amount of salsa was going to mask the soggy oily tortilla taste. I brought this up to the manager and he immediately replace them, but he didn't even let me finish telling him what was wrong.. So, when I got the new ones, boom! soggy again :/ At this point I just left the plate of uneaten tacos on the table and left. Drain the tacos man!! Even McDonald's has the decency to drain their fries (I think/hope). So the two stars I'm giving them are for their salsa bar, I do enjoy that part but its just not the same when you don't have anything to put it on! Not sure if I'll return, for now I'm taking an extended leave of absence from Snapper Jack's, maybe when I come back those issues will no longer be an issue. A great stop at this Mexican Cantina when we are visiting Ventura. $31 for one ice tea and 3 fish taco combo meals = 2 fish tacos (crispy or soft) with rice/beans/chips or curly fries...I like the tacos crispy...Yummy! Lots of different salsas/sauces to choose from. Inside and outside tables. Order at the counter. Food ready pretty quickly. I saw someone's order of nachos that looked mouth-watering and saw lots of raves for a potato taco... Will have to try more off the menu next time... It's cheap, quick, and big! I had the fish tacos, one with grilled fish, and one that was fried and both were pretty bland, but great portions. I went after playing in a tournament but the portion was still sure to fill me and satisfy my cravings! The only reason I gave three stars was because the fish was pretty bland, but if you put more sauce (which you can get from a side condiments bar) I think it should be able to fill in the absent flavor. But if you're looking for something quick, cheap, and filling, then this is the place for you! read more

The sauces are the real stars here!! So why didn't I give them 5 stars? Because I think they're OVERPRICED. Bought the USUAL today, with a drink and it cost me nearly $15! I think that's way too much for a burrito and drink!! For that reason I DON'T COME HERE THAT OFTEN. If Snapper Jack's lowered their prices by just $2 I'd come more often. About a year ago I just remembered there were these two young ladies I observed. They were cashiers and you could tell they loved their jobs. I asked them if it was a fun place to work and they both agreed it's probably the best job out there. My wife and I just couldn't help but notice their smiles and enthusiasm. (Apparently neither of them work their anymore.... one I guess is in the armed forces now and the other is going to school! Way to be ambitious girls my wife and I applaud you!!!!) The customer service was great a year ago and it's just as fantastic now! Due to the covid I miss going in and sitting in the decorated restaurant. I have lived in Ventura for years now and I have never eaten at Snapper Jack's. I have totally missed out. Snapper Jack's is right across from Ventura College...a couple feet away from Dominos Pizza. Myself and my significant other went here today...she had been here many times before and knew exactly what to order. I just like her ordered the Enchiladas Ranchero with rice as a side. I ordered them without sour cream...sorry I guess I just like my enchiladas plain. Notice I just said I like them plain...they ended up coming with a sauce that included chopped tomatoes, celery and onions. I ended up picking all that out. Other than that they were amazing. Next time I am here I will just ask for them without all that mumbo jumbo in it. Hopefully they can do just that...I can totally pick them out again next time if they can not. They have seriously like 8 different kinds of sauces up at the bar...my hunny said that the best one was the "Jack Sauce"...its a mild sauce. Oh wow I ended up going back three times for more of this amazing sauce. I put it all over my enchiladas and dipped chip after chip in it. I do not even know how to explain it...its almost like a secret sauce. Believe me I am scared of new and exciting food so this was awesome sauce. All told our two dinners after tax totaled about 20 bucks...not bad for a totally tasty meal. I am sad I did not know about Jack's earlier...I will totally be back. :0) read more

What happened my beloved Snapper Jack's? You fell off.. And that's putting it mildly. My red snapper was so overcooked that it turned to mush. If we're being totally honest here, the consistency made me slightly ill. My once favorite salsa was so bland that it tasted like mildly spiced water. I used to drive all the way from Santa Clarita to eat your lovely fish tacos but I doubt I will make the trip again. Blech. Update: My husband and I both came down with food poisoning since eating here yesterday. That was the only meal we both had together within the last 24 hrs. Never again!!!! This place is as authentic as a Chinese restaurant that serves sushi since any taco place that offers hard shell tacos just isn't genuine. It's akin to how I know Chipotle isn't real Mexican food, yet I still get a craving once in a while. However, despite the gringoness of the restaurant, it actually tasted good. Sandwiched between Ventura College and Buena High School, this place gets fucking packed. What doesn't help is the tiny parking lot it shares with its neighbors. Regardless, if you can manage shaking off annoying students and parking lot rage, the fish tacos are as advertised, "snappy". I ordered Jack's Combo, a combination of two tacos with rice and pinto beans (seriously, no black beans?). I had breaded fish tacos that consisted of breaded snapper, cheese, and cabbage wrapped in a tortilla. By themselves the tacos are nothing spectacular, but that is because the beauty of Snapper Jack's is about customizing your fish taco the way you want it. I guess the best way to describe the whole process in three words is "Pimp Your Taco". Snapper Jack's allows you to pimp your taco by choosing from more than seven salsas ranging from your traditional pico de gallo to spicy habanero. They even had this weird melon and cucumber salsa that wasn't half bad and some mild salsas that sounded like they were named after Mexican strippers (Yolanda, Alano). However, the best salsa they had was the Aztec Mild. It had a creamy yet fresh flavor that I think was a combination of guacamole, sour cream and cilantro. I don't know what it is about the 805, but it seems to be turning into a mecca for starting imitation Mexican restaurants. Freebird's anyone? Regardless, I think Snapper Jack's offers a decent fish taco. Good, but not great. read more

I was so excited to come back and finally get some delicious fish tacos after my last first visit, but was slightly disappointed at how the tacos tasted this time around. I ordered two fish tacos- in a soft taco shell and grilled fish. The tacos size is bigger than your traditional street taco and definitely filling. The only thing I really didn't like so much was the fishy aftertaste I had with each bite. I don't remember tasting that when I had the crispy fish taco, but it could've very well been the crunchiness of the taco that masked the fishiness. The store itself reminded me of chuys, with stuff on the walls, colorful and of course with an awesome salsa bar with the special sauce. After we placed our order, our food was very quick to come up, even though it was during lunch time and the dining area packed. We also ordered a side of guacamole, which was okay but not as great as the first time I had tried it. I'm definitely not ruling SJ out, but I think I may stick to Rubios for fish tacos when I'm in the area again. Parking can also be a nightmare...so come early! read more

This was my fifth visit to Snapper Jack's and it's one of the few places that I keep coming back. I brought Ruben a few years ago and he loves it! The plaza is shared with several other businesses and gets very crowded. Fortunately, there's a quick turn around for parking spaces, so although it's almost always packed, you don't wait long. You walk into the left door, order at the register, then grab a table inside or outside. The menu isn't too large, but still offers a good variety of Mexican-American fare with my favorite twist of snapper. I know that fish tacos are fairly common, but this was the first place I'd come across that offered a specific type of fish on all their items. And I love the snapper! I've always ordered Snapper Nachos ($8) on each visit, so this was no exception. The snapper was delicious, but I wasn't as crazy about the nachos as before. We also ordered Grilled Snapper Tacos ($3.15/each) since I'm really into "traditional" tacos lately. I was weary of the cabbage that accompanied the fish, but everything was good - especially with the salsas. I wish I would've tried the battered version of the fish and a hard taco option, but there's always next time! Oh yeah, the salsa bar is definitely worth a visit. There's a reason it was voted Best Salsa Bar! There are two creamy "salsas" called Secret Sauce and Aztec that are really delicious. The Aztec is a creamy green sauce with cilantro and a nice little kick of spice. Both are really good with everything! I also like the pico de gallo, cilantro with onions, and medium red salsa. One of my all time hometown faves!! The shack sauce hands down is the best secret sauce in town! (Guilty confession: I've contemplated going in with a squirt bottle and bribing the cashier to let me fill er up lol) Before I went veg, I would regularly order the jack's combo with the crispy snapper tacos. It was great for short lunch breaks from BHS down the road and it was a great pick me up before swim practice. My high school buddies and I love it here. My parents have even gotten cravings for their chicken and snapper burritos from time to time. I came here last week (post veg diet) and ordered the jack's combo with the potato tacos. I wasn't too keen on eating just potatoes and asked the cashier if he could add veggies to the tacos. He gladly added grilled onions and bell peppers free of extra charge. Awesome fish tacos. Jacks Combo is a steal at $7.45. Sort of like "Rubio's" which started in San Diego and got full of themselves with quality dropping like a rock as they increased prices. This is high-quality hand-make food with fish tacos at the top of the list. Very nice salsa bar with a wide variety of selections from onion-cilentro and fruit salsa: what is not to like? A little out of the way on Telegraph Rd. The only downside is that the parking lot is too small, and cars are constantly jockeying for a space. Even with that, Snapper Jack's Taco Shack is wonderful variation of the Mexican-American fish taco. Go there eat. Enjoy. read more

Love the jack's burrito! I'll stop here between classes at Ventura College to grab a burrito and it is so bomb. The salsa bar is so fun! I always get a ton of different salsas and a big cup of the jack's sauce. It is dairy-based though, so be careful my lactose intolerant friends!
