What a great new place. Food is fantastic. A must try for everyone in Anchorage We had a Philly cheesesteak sandwich, a BLT w/avocado sandwich and the spaghetti carbonara. The sandwiches came with the salad bar. The carbonara was extremely flavorful with a hint of pesto and a little bit of heat. Added mushrooms and they were fresh and delicious. Spaghetti was cooked to order so took a little longer for pasta dishes. The Philly cheesesteak was amazing. The beef was seasoned to perfection. The sandwich is big enough to satisfy almost anyone. The BLTA was thick and delicious. Throw in the salad bar and it is a great deal. The place has 4 tables and a bar for 4-5 more. It use to be a pizza place years ago so the decor is very minimal but the service was fast and very friendly. I believe this will now be one of my favorite lunch spots. Due to the small size I'm going to order and pickup next time. I can't wait to try the other items on the menu. read more

I took my mother here for dinner, intrigued by the unexpected opening of a new restaurant as I was driving on Spenard Rd. going back to the office on my lunch break earlier in the week. Sofia's Restaurant is located on the corner of Lois Dr. and Spenard Rd. just before the train tracks if you're going west from Minnesota Dr. and after McRae Rd. if you're heading eastbound. The restaurant has the feel of a diner but modern at the same time with a large screen TV playing music videos of Top 40 hits. We were greeted by the owner's wife who told us to have a seat anywhere we like. The dining area was small yet cozy. There were only 4 tables available opposite a tall counter that had stools by the entrance. A salad bar with a wide variety of items is shown on your left as you walk in. We saw the cooks working hard in the kitchen. They all gave us a friendly greeting. We sat ourselves at the corner by a window looking out at the entrance with Spenard Rd. in the background. We were given a copy of a small takeout menu that had a selection of salads, pastas, sandwiches, steaks, and soups. Although the menu is small, there are plans to change the menu with new dishes every week. I ordered a Steak with Peppercorn Sauce and my mother picked the Philly Cheese Steak. We also had the option of adding the Salad Bar with our entrees. The owner's wife surprised us with a free small offering of their soups: the Chicken Lemon with Rice or Avgolemono Soup in Greek and the Clam Chowder. Both were very delicious and hearty on a cold winter day. Like other Yelpers have stated, the Salad Bar is fresh and delicious with versatile selections to make your own custom dish. There are ingredients to make a Chef, Greek, or a Thai Salad. The steak I had was a perfect juicy medium. The peppercorn sauce was an outstanding complement to go with. I made sure there wasn't anything left on the plate when I was finished. The Philly Cheese Steak was piled high with a generous amount of sliced meat and plenty of melted cheese. My mother is a small and petite person. She joked that it looked bigger than her. A great amount of food at a very reasonable price for only $32 total on the bill, this is a welcome addition to the Spenard area along with Writer's Block Cafe down the road, to renovate the surrounding area for the better as time goes by. The restaurant itself does not have its own website yet, but has a Facebook page where you can view the menu changes on a weekly basis. This would explain the small takeout menus that customers receive when dining in as the new menus take effect to replace the old ones. Of the current dining scene here in Anchorage, there has never been a better time to support small, family-owned restaurants as we've seen too many of them, especially on this stretch of road on Spenard, shutter and close their doors unexpectedly. The owners and their employees are good people and the owner's wife was happy to strike up a conversation with us. I believe this was a smart choice to open their establishment, especially during summer when the tourist season is in full swing and it's along the way to and from the airport. read more

Do not let the simplicity of the setting deter you. The food here is spectacularly delicious ! They have 4 different soups and a selection of salads and sandwiches. Of the soups you could choose from tomato basil, spicy tortilla, chicken lemon rice, and one other which I cannot recall. We had the tomato basil and spicy tortilla. Both soups were phenomenal, delectable and flavor packed! Out of this world savory! Of the sandwiches we had a burger (good) and a French dip. The French dip was epic: strips of oh so tender meat with jus that was worthy of drinking all by itself. This restaurant has been open for just over 6 months. With cooks this talented and wait staff just as dedicated to good and attentive service, I predict word of the quality of their food will rapidly spread and my next trip to Anchorage will find Sofia's in a much larger building to accommodate all the people flocking to them. Easily one of the best restaurants in town. My dad and I are probably considered regulars now, it's become our little thing to do together. Sofia's Restaurant offers so many gluten free options and some dairy free dishes as well. The service was great, our server was friendly and very knowledgeable about gluten allergies. They offer a soup or salad bar with most Entrees served, the salad bar is huge and has endless options for toppings and dressings they also offer 6 different types of soup. The gluten free sandwiches and burgers that they serve here are some of the best gluten free buns and breads I have had at a restaurant. They also do not rip you off you with a tiny overpriced sandwich. Most gluten free sandwiches served at restaurants are tiny because the gluten free bread is so small but here at Sofias you get a full sized, delicious sandwich for a reasonable price! I am a sandwich and salad junkie and I needed to see what the hype was all about. Walking in the underwhelming from the outside building I can honestly say I was excited. The interior is cozy but impeccably clean. The salad bar was fully stocked with crisp af veggies and other interesting salad choosings (sea beans - kimchi - potato salad) but what REALLY shined was the dressings. All in house. All so enchantingly fragrant and fresh looking! I went with the Italian and it was SO GOOD! Acidic, tart, cheesy, savory , garlicky - almost indescribably mouth puckeringly wonderful. I am mouth is literally watering thinking about it. It's that freaking good. The Philly was also bomb af. Fluffy bread that's crisp on the outside - the flavor of the grill - fresh toothy mushrooms grilled to perfection! I could go on and on. Found this place while waiting for my car to be ready for pick up in Spenard. It's a cute little house conversion with a handful of tables and a bar. I was alone, so I sat at the bar and ordered the vodka sauce fettuccine. It was $18 and usually comes with chicken, but I don't eat meat so I asked for no chicken. The guy who took my order offered to have the kitchen add in some vegetables, but I told him I was happy as-is. I was given a huge portion of noodles and sauce with fresh cheese sprinkled on top as well as some greenery, maybe basil? They served it in a to-go container with a generously large piece of garlic bread to go with it. It was delicious and tasted very fresh. I think alone it might have needed a little salt, but with the garlic bread, it was perfect. I think this place is still relatively new and maybe don't have a commercial dishwasher or just want to stay streamlined on staff, hence the take out containers and free bottles of water instead of glasses of water. I liked this. I felt comfortable staying and eating some there but was happy that I was ready to go as soon as I got the phone call that my car was ready. I finished the rest when I got home-- some that night and some the next day-- and still ended up tossing some simply because I didn't think it would hold up to a third round of reheating. Like I said, big portion! Flavor on the sauce was excellent and I didn't feel like I was missing out on the chicken or extra veggies. Previous review mentioned the place looking cluttered, and I would agree that it kinda looks like they are still moving in, but it didn't impact my experience. My first experience at Sophia's was pretty good, we dined in. They served us water out of water bottles and also served us our food in to go containers.... An interesting experience. However, my most recent experience I ordered to go. When we called in, the lady on the phone said that we could pick our sides when we got there. After getting there she asked us what sides we wanted. I replied "soup" and the lady just looked at me like I was a waste of her time. It was extremely rude... if it is such a problem for her to take the time to tell me what kind of soup they have, then wouldn't it have been better to do over the phone?
