Since COVID19 is still amongst us, customers are not allowed to smell the individual spices on display. However, there is a spice legend that can help break down what is offered in their pre-packaged tubes and containers of spices on the shelves. This is a great stop in Solving! It's a small store with many spices from all over the world. All the prices are very reasonable! The smalls are $6 and the larges are $13. The staff was really helpful in helping us identify what we were looking for, and they have the cutest spice gift boxes! read more

Put this store at the top of your list of places you must see in Solvang! This place deserves wayyyyyyy more hype than it gets . Whenever I see tiktoks and IG reels of Solvang it tends to show the same spots but it needs to show Spice Merchant (hhhmmm maybe ill make one). This place blew me away! I love spices and teas soooooo much , spices and teas are just one process away from, flowers, plants, and trees. For me spices and teas are just proof that creation and their Creator put these things in place for us enjoy , to heal us, to warm, us to relax us etc. It makes me so happy to know that someone put a seed in the ground and nurtured a plant and produced an herb, a spice, a tea etc. The presentation and storage of the teas and spices is so lovely and there's very little plastic in sight. This place is a spice and tea lovers paradise. The walls were covered in a plethora of different spices, teas, and blends. They also sell mugs, diffusers, and other cute accessories to go with your spices and teas. They have the spices and teas in separate sections of the store so you don't get confused or frustrated as to what you're looking for. The store is nicely organized and they have a counter of loose spices and blends that just looks SO cute and sort of vintage This little store had a little something for everyone in our group and we even found a nice mother's day gift during our visit here. read more

Cute little shop with spices and teas. They are heavier on the spices but they do have some nice teas to choose from. I picked up a jar of Kenyan purple tea to try. Saw a few unique tea options. I had just come from another tea/spice shop so I can't help comparing. This shop, while lovely, did not let you smell the teas. Not a big deal but definitely made the other shop stand out in terms of tea shopping. Reasonable prices. Friendly service. read more

My only complaint is that I DIDN'T SPEND ENOUGH TIME HERE!!! Wow what a treasure of a find. This shop has SO MANY spices and teas and fun little knick-knacks, I could have spent the whole day in it. It's a great spot for a unique and local gift. Many organic options. And I didn't notice until I got home, but the spice blends do not contain salt, which is highly desirable and hard to find. Many spice blends you find in a normal grocery store are full of salt; coming without it allows for whoever is using the blend to control the amount of salt and buy only the spices (GREAT). Staff was also knowledgeable and friendly. Stop in if you're in the area! read more

A wonderful visit while in Solvang! This is my prime stop while visiting the city. From novice cook to professional chef- you'll definitely find something to try! I've been buying loose leaf tea from this place for a while, not sure why I never thought to write a review! I have not tried any of their spices but their tea selection is incredible and it's always very fresh. My favorite is the Bollywood Breakfast with roses in it. This place is super cute so of course, being the chef that I am, had to stop in and check it out. The store smells amazing and I really loved how organized all of the spices were. Everything had a place. It was easy to see what I was looking at since everything was grouped. I decided to try the chicken seasoning since I cook with a lot of chicken. When I got to the register, the lady was very nice. I asked her how to use the seasonings but she didn't seem to know so I figure I would just rub them on or make a marinade out of olive oil. I said this and she agreed that would be a good idea. Hopefully they taste good! read more

A vast selection of spice and spice rubs and some great tea options such as oolong. The spicy mango habenero rub is excellent. The display inside is very photo worthy. Love the racks of spice and the spice map. They have options from the US, India, China, Middle East and more. You won't be able to smell these jars due to covid. It's okay because it was easy to find good options. And surprise, the oolong tea is super good quality, and authentic. I loved it. read more

Wonderful little shop! I've been here twice and I'm always impressed by the very large selection of spices, including many exotic and rare ones. Their spices are a bit pricey but you get what you pay for! I used to be a professional chef and I can tell you the teas, spices, and spice blends are phenomenal. Also, the packaging is really beautiful and if you buy a ton of spices and teas from here your pantry won't look ugly. You can stack the adorable little jars in your pantry and it will look great! I just noticed the sign for this store and got so excited! We went today on the hunt for unique spices needed to make Indian Butter Chicken. They had exactly what we needed and we are so excited! I could spend an hour in this store just looking at all the options. They have such a great selection and a couple of different sizes of spices. We will definitely be back. I randomly wandered into the store. Found myself in awe with all these spices and teas! So many to choose from that I didn't know what to buy. I ended up with butterfly pea tea powder so I can make those blue teas i've been seeing around lately on social media. The Markut Lime leaves powder will be something new for me to try as well. This was such a fun store to browse through on our trip to Solvang. Definitely worth stopping in and picking up something for you or as a gift. They have a massive selection of spices, seasoning blends (many I'd never heard of) and loose leaf teas. They also sell tea towels, mugs and other related goodies. The logo (viking dragon boat) is very cute, which adds charm as a gift. Despite the stores size you could spend a good amount of time browsing all the options. I ended up getting some tea and seasoning blends for family (which they all love) and the amaretto spice tea for myself (not too strong and a great pick me up during that 3pm slump). If I am ever back in the area, I'll make sure to stop in! read more

Stumbled upon The Solvang Spice Merchant quite by accident and I am so glad we did. The shop carries Spices by ingredient, type and region. Spices for baking, common spices, a wide variety of salts, Herbs along with rare and exotic spices to boot. They also have a great selection of Teas and beverages. The lady inside was so very informative and helpful on what her shop carries and the how everything is or could be used. This was very valuable to my wife and I as we began looking around. There are several spices that are very good for the body and have some natural healing properties. We found rubs and spices for BBQing and smoking. More spices for baking and things we had never heard of. There were even gift sets available as well. We spent a lot of time doing some shopping for us as well as some Christmas shopping for others whom we knew would really appreciate these types of spices. I really recommend stopping by when in Solvang if you are the creative type in the kitchen or know someone who is. We also got their business card so we can order online as well. read more

This place is AMAZING. I could have spent twice what I did and I bought 8 jars! So much variety and so many different places represented. I can't wait to get back home and do some cooking and grilling to use all the new spices we bought. I also got some lavender sugar. My sister makes an excellent lavender cocktail and this sugar rimmed on the glass will make it that much better. read more

I really liked the large selection of spice display to allow customers to experience the smell of the spice. The store is well set up, organized. I like the cups display, with their own unique design. I bought 3 of them and 2 new spice blends (I love salmon and the chili lime). I used the chili lime on some chicken, but it didn't really taste like chili lime I taste mostly the chili. The hot Cheetos with lime has more flavor than this blend. I was really disappointed. There was only one person on staff, so I didn't really get much help, but I was greeted. yay! read more

There was a lavender cheese and the black cheese with lemon that caught my eye. I bought the black cheese with lemon. The shop associate told me that the black color comes from licorice powder yet you cannot taste the licorice, only the lemon. There were many things I wanted to buy but had to have control. I love that a mother and daughter team run the shop and I loved hearing the mother speak Danish to an older woman that is one of their regular customers. There were so many pastries to choose from - we had a hard time walking away and not buying one of everything! They had tubs of Danish Butter Cookies and massive Danish Kringles! They also had plenty of seating inside as well! I loved seeing all of the Spring and Easter decorations throughout - it was a very welcoming atmosphere! Staff were also friendly and gave recommendations! I would definitely come back and visit Mortensen's the next time I am in Solvang! Check them out!

Creamy, rich, and balanced with just the right amount of sweetness. Definitely one of those flavors you'll be thinking about long after you've finished it.
