Ever since I tried Somi Somi a while back, I have to say I was left quite impressed. I am now officially a fan of this place! Located on the busy street of Atlantic Ave in the heart of Bixby Knolls, SomiSomi is the neighborhood ice cream parlor. They have quite the flavors to choose from. On this one day, I tried the ah-boong pink guava with custard filling inside the fish shaped waffle cone. I highly recommend that! They also have cups if you prefer that. Some of the flavors they have are ube, matcha, cookies and cream, pink guava and others. They also have toppings such as fruity pebbles, captain crunch, cookie bits and more. To top it off, you are given the option between a strawberry or a macaron for your order. The waffle fish is a must order and try! It comes out so warm to compliment your ice cream with afterwards. Street parking only; mind that this is a residential neighborhood, so parking will be quite difficult. Lines can be quite long, but I say this with confidence that it is well worth the wait. I only deducted one star as it is not the healthiest and can give you diabetes haha, and also bec the available flavors are unpredictable. They've taken a classic Japanese dessert (the taiyaki) and added a twist. We've seen this spin on an old classic at food festivals and other places but this is the first brick and mortar shop in Long Beach. You choose the soft serve flavor and the inside flavor of the taiyaki. The flavors are slightly limited but they it's a high quality soft serve where the flavor actually comes through. My favorite was the ube/thai ice tea swirl. Once they fill your cup, you can choose toppings (don't choose the Graham cracker topping which is essentially dust). Then they put the taiyaki which includes the filling, and add either a strawberry or half a macaron cookie. The best part is the taiyaki which is warm and has a nice crunch on the outside but fluffy soft inside. The soft serve is, like I said, good but not something alone would make me want to seek this place out. Real nice service, clean spot. It's worth a visit if you want to try something new. read more

I love their soft serve so much!!! I usually get their matcha soft serve but every other flavor I tried (ube, milk, Thai tea, and cookies and cream) are also delicious. I also like how they rotate swirls every week. As for their taiyaki, i recommend getting nutella filling!! I do recommend getting an upside down ah-boong if you eat your ice cream slow because it melts pretty fast. One thing I would like to note is that when it was closing time, the workers just turned off the lights on my party and I. Came here for the first time with my family after dining at Ramen Hub. Was super excited since I always wanted to try it however I was pretty disappointed. The interior is pretty simple. The layout is terrible. There's a U - shaped bar directly in the center of the room that takes up the whole area. You get confused on where the line is or what's going on until you realize the bar is for people to stand around and eat their ice cream. I think the space could be utilized better because that just makes it more crowded. My husband made the order. There was a family of 5 before us and another 2. The other thing that bothered me and took up so much time, making people wait longer for their ice cream is asking what toppings everyone wanted. Imagine standing there waiting on a family of 5 to be finished, each of them with an ice cream asking for toppings. Not their fault. If the toppings are free, it would be easier for the cashier to ask at the register and include it under each ice cream on the receipt, that way the person assembling everything can go down the list and get the items out faster instead of people standing there looking at the toppings, trying to decide which one they want. We finally get our three ice creams and at this point my husband denied all toppings because we wanted to get out of there. It was off putting having to stand there and wait while the customer was deciding which toppings for 5 ice creams and then the employee just taking her time very slowly sprinkling it on. Just no sense of urgency. Don't get me wrong, the employees are nice but feel like she could've stepped it up a bit. My kiddos enjoyed their fish cone but said the ice cream was ok and it started to melt very quickly. Like as soon as we started walking out the door, it was melting. Don't think I will try this place again and if I do in the future, hopefully they change the way the place orders that way things can go faster and smoothly! read more

Tried it at a different location last year multiple times because I loved it so much! Was super excited that they brought it back this year and had to get it again. So after dinner snack/treat decided to come here for the much anticipated cookie butter flavor! The girl at the register seemed nonchalant. She didn't greet us or anything either when we walked in the door. There was only 2 other people eating inside. About 4 workers working. Waited at the counter a bit, then she came by and just asked what we would like to order. The ice cream itself was softer than usual and very liquid soft melted ice consistency... melted basically. it also didn't really taste like cookie butter. That was the most disappointing thing... Basically just tasted milky?! The only thing that tasted good was the toppings which was quite a disappointment! Noticed they were also refilling the machines and cleaning it out with a strainer. The girl wasn't wearing gloves doing this. Only the one making the ah-boong (fish shaped cones) and taiyaki's. The girl at the register was helping the other girl pour in the liquid mixture, her nails was literally 4 inches long, that was a bit gross, especially in a food environment having nails that are that long... imagine them breaking off, because she could barely hold the bucket of liquid to pour into the machine... Someone also asked to use the restroom; she said "can we use the restroom?" (She was with her daughter) and the worker said "sorry, no". That's a bit odd to say to a paying customer. They clearly ordered because they were waiting for their order. They had the door of the restroom ajar propping the door slightly open, but they didn't seem to have any "out of order" sign. Thankfully I didn't have to use the restroom or else I'd be pretty upset that they just said "no" without any reasoning on why we can't use the restroom???? Other than that, this location is fairly clean... not much outside seating besides 2 benches that don't look very clean. There's places to stand inside to enjoy your treat.
