If I could give this Sonny's zero stars I would. My latest - and possibly last - experience was awful. Among the things I ordered was a lean beef brisket dinner with sweet potato, cole slaw and cornbread. l specifically asked the server for cinnamon butter and BBQ sauces. She said she would make sure they would be in the bag. As I left to pick up my curbside order I received a call from Sonny's informing me they were out of sliced brisket, but still had chopped brisket. Fine, we'll take the chopped brisket. Off I went. At Sonny's the server took my card he informed me that they don't have the chopped brisket and would I Iike something else? Pork? Chicken? I said sliced pork. He returned a few minutes later with the food and receipt. He then tells me they DID have sliced brisket after all. I signed and drove off. I get home and open the containers. No cinnamon butter. No BBQ sauce. No cole slaw. I call Sonny's to lodge my dissatisfaction. The manager listens, apologizes and offers two free meals. I thank him. I go to check on how the meaI is being enjoyed only to find out the sweet potato is undercooked and hard in the center and that the brisket is actually pork and is primarily gristle and fat. There were about three bites worth of actual pork. Definitely not lean by any stretch of the imagination. By far the worst experience I've ever had at Sonny's. Mistakes by the kitchen staff. One of my first restaurants that I've stopped at in Jacksonville, FL. This bbq joint is affordable & delicious! I came here during lunch time on a weekday therefore it wasn't busy but I heard it gets pretty packed after 5pm. My boyfriend and I decided to get the tator tots topped w| cheese, chicken, & deep fried onion slices for toppings. I got the pulled pork w| 2 sides (baked beans & Mac and cheese) and cornbread which was $7. The meat was so tender and the Mac and cheese was creamy yet not too creamy to the point where the noodles were too soft, which was perfect. Drove all the way up here to meet up with family (of 8) and love the remodeling of this new floor layout and exterior. Huge space for waiting area and the host was very nice and friendly. The hostess was able to put a table quickly for us even right after she sat a huge family before us. The waitress was also friendly and we ordered our drinks. Because we were a family of 8 and a baby, it was best to choose the Family Feast (2x) that feeds about 4 each feast. Each feast includes chicken, pulled pork, beef brisket, ribs, 3 sides, garlic bread or cornbread, and 4 beverages. For the sides, we chose mac n' cheese, green beans, bbq beans, 2 fries as coleslaw. We also ordered 2 corn nuggets. The corn nuggets were hot and fried well. Delicious as always as you can never go wrong with them! Dip in ranch and boom, tasty. We got our two family feasts and I should say, it was a very good amount of meat and sides for us. The chicken was very juicy, hot and flavorful. The beef brisket I thought was a little dry, but I guess it was just the piece I chose, but that didn't bother me. Garlic bread and cornbread were delicious as well. I got the grab and go kit for under $50. 2LBS pork, 1 slab of ribs, 4 sides, choice of bread and sauces... fed 2 of us for 3 meals plus I used some of the extra pork for a fun brunch creation. These meals are great because they provide so much food for an affordable price which allows your to enjoy or create new recipes using the leftovers! I called ahead and picked up curbside and it was quick and fool proof. The only reason I gave 4/5 stars was because they forgot my green beans and I had to use canned ones from the house to provide some sort of veggie. I am kind of a bbq diva being from the south and all, but I was pleased with Sonny's! There are bbq platters, sandwiches, and even a salad bar to choose from. I opted for a bbq sandwich meal that came with a side. The sandwich was huge!! I had to eat some of the pork before I could devour my sandwich. I was ok with that because I was able to try more of the sauces. Their Carolina, mustard based, bbq was good but doesn't hold a candle to real SC bbq. It wasn't very sweet and the mustard flavor dominated all the other flavors. I like mustard, so again, I enjoyed my sandwich. It was topped with coleslaw so that helped balance the flavors a little. For my side I went with potato salad, although I did steal a few bites of mac n cheese from my fiancee and it was quite tasty. The potato salad was exactly what I was hoping for. Be sure to try it! The only odd part about the whole experience was that the cold sides came out well before our food. Those who had warm sides recieved them with their meals. It was so difficult not to eat all of my side before my sandwich arrived. Not a deal breaker, but this was a tad strange to me. This Sonny's has got to be new. Otherwise they have done a great job at maintaining this place - It does seem like a very commercialized restaurant from the decor but most Sonny's are nowadays. The service was great. We came about an hour before closing and our server did a great job with checking on us and making sure everything was right. There are televisions everywhere and now a bar with a few different choices of very cold draft. Usually you get seated pretty quickly. The wait staff is kind and works hard. The menu offers different types of barbecue options. The appetizers are different in a good way, most all fried options. I am not much about that. But others say they are good The pork had a good flavor a little dry. This is a commercial chain and not bad with that in mind. You can order a side of meat to go with your salad. The choice of barbecue sauce is 4 different types. I like the original. Little sweet. But not as sweet as the Sweet variety You get an option of garlic toast or sweet corn bread muffin. It also comes with a choice of daily soup offers Not a fan of their soups to be honest. The salad bar comes with different lettuce. The lettuce is cold and crisp. The topping choices is good. A little for everyone. The have a broccoli salad, smoked chicken salad and crab salad that are all very good. They have a descent selection of dressing not sure that they're home made, I believe bottle. They have a few sweet offerings in the salad bar, but I don't indulge. They use large glasses for drinks so you keep a constant drink. The check was a little time to come and cash me out, but other than that. This is a good choice. We ordered some appetizers, which were delicious. I highly recommend the corn nuggets and their egg rolls. If I were to ever go back, this is all I would order. For dinner, I got the pulled pork, ribs and brisket platter, along with 2 sides. The pork and brisket were okay, but not very flavorful. The ribs were super tough, and pretty much inedible. As for the sides, I got Mac and cheese and a baked potato. I've never had bad Mac and cheese in my life.. Until then. I couldn't eat it. It had a very weird taste, but I'm not one to complain, so it just sat there. My husband ordered the Gone fishin' platter and the catfish was super dry and bland. So in all my years living in Florida I have never been to a BBQ pit. I know, for shame, right? Well, it's just never been on my to do list. Even my boyfriend, who is one of the pickiest eaters I know has at least had their pulled pork sandwiches. Today, he surprised me with an impromptu lunch date here. He tends to do that a lot. I perused the menu to see what would catch my eye and make me hungry and I came across their Sonny's Annual Pitmaster Showdown menu exhibiting three finalist sandwiches where only one would be a permanent menu item winner after voting ends. Of the three is chose the Triple Threat. The Triple Threat sandwich was smoked turkey, pulled chicken, crispy bacon and cheese with lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickles with a tangy sauce on it stacked tall between two delicious slices of bun. I chose to order just the sandwich because it was already $7.99 alone. I really didn't feel that paying an extra $2 for the big deal was worth it since I really wasn't in the mood for anything else. The boyfriend chose the pulled pork sandwich big deal with fries and an extra side of cornbread. I told him he had better share. We didn't wait very long for our food. And my sandwich tasted fresh and warm. It was HUGE, though and I seriously considered using a fork and knife to eat it. My mouth isn't THAT big. I mean, c'mon man, when you order a sandwich that needs to be held together by a big toothpick, that's a pretty big sandwich. LOL. The bacon was crispy and cooked to perfection. My smoked turkey was yummy and blended in perfect with my pulled chicken. The chicken was moist and delicious. Seasoning was amazing. As I tried to devour my sandwich it fell apart somewhat. As pieces of chicken and red onion fell from it my boyfriend simply stated, "Can't take you anywhere" and we shared a good laugh. The cornbread was moist and felt thick, almost like the way peanut butter sticks to the roof of your mouth and it was perfectly warm and sweet. Highly recommend it if you like cornbread. I will be going back to try some other things on the menu that I saw, because now I know why people get so addicted to it. We picked up two smoked turkeys on Christmas Eve. On Christmas morning I put them in the oven as per directions. After two hours I checked temp and it was still not the right temperature. After three hours I took them out. When I sliced one it was still bloody. It was supposed to already be thoroughly cooked and only needing warming. I'm so mad and disappointed. It's 10:30 and I put them in at 6:30 am. Directions said 275 but after 2 hours I raised it to 350. I've got 40 people to feed at noon and other casseroles to cook. I'm going to call the restaurant when they open tomorrow and let them know about this disaster. Never again. read more
