Since I have eaten many meals at this sonnys location over the last 7 years, this review is accurate and deserved. Walked in and checked the salad bar and it was totally blown out, a sloppy mess, not even any lettuce available, the condition of it looked like what a salad bar in a prison would resemble if they had one. We ordered 3 BBQ sandwich meals and a kids meal. All of our meals were COLD, but my family was too embarrassed to send them back. But I personally couldn't eat a cold meal. I had to get up and walk my meal back to the service area to locate a staff member. My seat was located in veiw of the server window and I watched the interaction with the server and the cook, and their facial expressions were as if they were being bothered. They knew this food looked substandard and cold, but they clearly did not care. My food returned and it was about 5 degrees hotter....and tasted well below Sonny's standards. I watched the manager in a buttoned black shirt walk by once, seemed like he was already checked out for the night instead of managing this establishment. If he was doing his job maybe he would have observed a hungry family being served cold piss poor food. This Sonnys location has taken a steep nose dive, maybe I should go to Bono's BBQ instead for a hot meal? Get it together Sonny's at Girvin....Worst $38.05 that I have spent in a very very long time. read more

Sonny's has been one of my all time favorite places to eat. I could eat at Sonny's every night of my life. I have lived in Jacksonville on the westside all of my life and enjoyed the Sonny's on Lane and the one that used to be on Blanding. Several years ago they closed the Blanding location, which gave us only one to go to in the area. Both locations always had a crowd for the most part, but now the Lane Avenue one is extra crowded especially after church on Sundays. The drive through at Lane avenue goes around the building and the pickup window is in the front where people are crossing into foot traffic, maybe not the best idea, but they may not have had another way to do it. I was just informed on Memorial Day 2022 they decided not to bring back the salad bar, and they had a very good salad bar, at one time you could even get cold baked beans on the bar, which I love even more than hot baked beans. I was also informed by the waitress that day that they no longer have Corn-on-the-cob, they now have a side of corn you can get, which I tried and was not impressed, I can get canned corn from the grocery store that tastes better then that. Seriously though, you got rid of corn-on-the-cob, what Bar B Q restaurant doesn't have corn-on-the-cob, even people in their back yards have corn-on-the-cob with bar b q. Sonny's is really starting to go down hill. Fried Corn-on-the-COB needs to come back to Sonny's. I even recommended Sonny's to my cousins visiting from Oklahoma, we didn't make it there when they were here several months ago, but when they left, they found one in Tallahassee and loved it. Normally I would give Sonny's 5 stars, but at this point I will have to give them 3 stars, because of issues stated above. Delicious food and great customer service!!! I highly recommend the family platter for families of four or for those which may have a big appetite. All the meats are delicious with or without the sauce. The beans are by far my favorite for the side dishes. If you like sweet tea, you definitely need to order a glass at Sonnys. The experience would have been better if my family and I would have arrived earlier in the evening, the kitchen was running out of items on the menu which is NEVER good when you are hungry! read more

We usually love coming to Sonny's with it being right around the corner from our house and we were excited to come tonight since we haven't been since it has been fully remodeled. However tonight was just "meh". I want to start this review by saying that I'm in the service industry and have been for multiple years, so I get when there are off days. It happens to everyone. But man, tonight was really off... First, it took a while for us to get sat and it wasn't even that busy. Then we ordered the redneck egg rolls as an appetizer. They were delivered to us poorly presented and without the side dipping sauce. We had to wait for the sauce and plates to be delivered and probably got them 2 minutes after our appetizer. Our main entrees came out quickly but my husband was missing his side of fries and side of ranch. By the time he got his fries, we had already finished our meal and we were ready to leave. Our drinks were never refilled throughout our meal until we asked for Togo drinks. There were multiple tables in the restaurant that were left dirty and not bussed for 10+ minutes. Although all of these things are minor, they add up when they all happen in one visit. Overall, we will probably be back again since we do live so close, but we hope things improve by our next visit. read more

I pass by this place multiple times a week and I've been interested to see what quality of barbecue they serve. So, I decided to finally stop in and try the ribs. I cashed in on the lunch special which was available on the weekend! For about $9 I got four sweet and smokey ribs, macaroni and cheese, baked beans and cornbread. Not bad. The ribs were actually quite tasty but certainly not tender and nowhere near "falling off the bone". In fact, the meat was unfortunately a little firm. The beans however, were absolutely delicious. If you're a sweet baked beans lover, you'll love this side order. The mac 'n cheese was forgettable. I was craving BBQ and I wanted something I knew would melt in my mouth. I typically wouldn't drive across town, but I wanted to get out of the house, so Sonny's was worth the drive. I ordered the beef brisket dinner and if I could have teleported home, it would have been perfect. The dinner came with two sides and two pieces of garlic bread. I also ordered a sweet tea, which was just how I liked it - extra sweet. For my sidekicks, as Sonny's calls them, I ordered fries and fried okra. The fries weren't anything special. The okra were tasty, and surprisingly not that soft after the drive home. Now the main attraction: the brisket. It was tender, smoky, juicy, and oh-so-tasty. It melted in my mouth. I didn't even have to add any of the mustard or sweet sauce that I asked for. The flavor they cooked into it was more than enough. I loved it. The afternoon guy bartender is very hospitable and food is great. On my next visit I saw a waitress walk out of the bathroom without washing her hands. She was having a phone conversation in one of the stalls. Kind of a turn off since she had to touch the door to walk out. The bar wasn't 100% wiped/clean and neither the bar tables where I wanted to sit. Smoked pork: I didn't detect much of a smokey flavor here; however, it was tender although somewhat fatty, Ribs: not fall off the bone tender as described on the web site, a hint of smokey flavor detected, one particular bone was entirely too tough and I like "burnt ends", brisket: tender with a good flavor to it, made a great sandwich for lunch, Chicken: nothing special noted, the leg was hard and dry, tater salad: I love a good potato salad, this was lacking/missing something...flavor? it didn't tickle the taste buds, beans: a can of Bush's much better! tea: a winner, ding ding! read more

I have grown up eating at Sonnys for over twenty years. Nothing has changed about this place. This location is super clean and enjoyable for the whole family. The food was just divine. I got the turkey lunch and it never fails. The turkey is thin and always taste so fresh and succulent. The wait staff are just awesome, also very genuine. Ask for Monica she was wonderful. This is one place in jax that is a chain yet I'm never disappointed. Nothing's changed in my opinion. They did get an update though of the "look" of things and well it suits the times. This is the first time we stopped at Sonny's in a few years. We don't have one that is convenient to where we live. So we took the opportunity while we were in the area to stop at this one. There are a lot of choices for BBQ in Jacksonville, and I don't think that Sonny's can compete anymore. Almost all the other BBQ places will serve you better BBQ for less money than we had. The ribs were obviously not slow-cooked, or fall off the bone. There was very little smoked taste and it seemed that it was just fast cooked over an open flame. The sides were good, but our order took a long time in coming. We had eaten at Bono's just a few weeks ago, and these two just cannot compare any more. Bono's served better BBQ in greater quantity than Sonny's, and Bono's prices and service are much better. This will be our last time at Sonny's. read more

Sonny's has really good bbq. With that being said my order has been messed up many times when I pick it up and get home, something is missing. The portion size seems small too for the price you pay for a meal. They do make it right and give a free meal when they screw up your order so that is good. Went for dinner, paid and went to the car. Suddenly the waitress comes running out the door claiming we didn't pay. Talks rudely stating she has an open ticket. My daughter was furious and spoke with the manager who basically just looked at her saying "its okay".
