This place is definitely cheaper than some other Chinese restaurants but just as delicious! We took home more leftovers for about $20 less than we have at other places. I usually bring two 4-cup glass Pyrex dishes but ended up having to ask for a tiny takeout box for the rice. There was a bit of a wait at around 12 PM on Presidents' Day (Monday) but not too surprising. 1) West Lake Style Beef Soup ($11.95): - Egg drop soup with minced beef pieces and green onion and cilantro placed on top - Really flavorful and nicely salted - Huge portion (about 7-8 cups maybe) 2) Braised lamb belly pot ($15.95) - Had 10 large tofu pieces (1.5-2 inch cubes) and 15 small meat pieces, some with flat bones - The pieces looked more like short ribs - I was expecting the pieces to look squishy like pork belly but lamb probably has a different anatomy. There were some pieces that had distinct marbling though (the lighter-colored fat separation) - Liquid that it came in was more like a stew/marinade than soup and went great with rice. We took home leftovers and it had gelled the next day, so a good amount of collagen I think. 3) Braised beef tendon with sea cucumber ($20.95) I've never had either of these things before but we mainly ordered it for the collagen. - Beef tendon was incredibly tender. - There weren't many sea cucumber pieces since it's an expensive ingredient. But it also came with mushrooms, green onions, and something like bamboo shoots possibly. - Sauce was nicely salted with a hint of sweetness. It had also gelled the next day and there was a lot of beef fat/tallow on the leftovers that went well with rice after heating. 4) Sticky rice bowl ($5.50) and braised pork rice ($6.50) - Both came with pork floss - Sticky rice came with some kind of sweet-and-sour sauce on top - Braised pork rice also had some kind of sauce that seeped in, probably the braising liquid for the pork. Why I like this spot: 1. It's very conveniently located (for me). 2. The food is decent. What I don't like? They sporadically screw up my take out order. I take responsibility for being too lazy to open up the bag and each individual order before leaving the place. So maybe chalk it up to a language barrier between me and the person taking the order or a simple communication error between the order taker & the cook but how can BBQ Pork Fried Rice become Vegetable Fried Rice? Family owned and this little gem is hidden well behind Taco Bell. It is extremely hard to find good Asian food and they have all the fixes you'll want. I love their oyster omelette. Shredded potatoes, their Chinese roll with stuffed meat and hot soybean. We keep coming back and try different dishes as much as we can. From sweet, fried to spicy. A hole in the wall with many childhood favorite dishes but you'll definitely overdose in sodium. Dishes are hit or miss and so are the service as well. FOOD We ordered various different dishes for our lunch and honestly it's really hit or miss. The green onion pancake, Chinese hamburger and coconut shrimp definitely stole the show. These dishes are seasoned and cooked to perfection. The green onion pancake has a very nice crust with a doughy inside. The Chinese hamburger was so good, it reminded my grandma's cooking when I went visit her in China. Hands down highly recommend these dishes! Unfortunately, the rest of the dishes like the twice cooked pork, tofu soup, and few of the other dishes are extremely salty. It has gotten to a point that it feels like they're trying to use the salt to mask flavors of the dish. Very disappointing and do not recommend getting these dishes. SERVICE The service at this place is also hit and miss. When I first gotten to the restaurant, the host was very nonchalant and didn't even look up from his phone to acknowledge a customer's presence (at the time, the restaurant was not busy). I came on a Sunday morning before 11am and there was no wait at all. I heard this place can get crowded during their busy hours so best to come early in the morning. We tried their soy bean milk with Chinese donut and the beef burrito which both hit the spot. The beef burrito was thick and filled with beef. We also tried their bean curd which comes packed in a small container already so you can take it to go. Comes with a lot of bean curd as well so I feel like you can split it into separate meals. They do catering, are good for large groups, and have a lot of experience doing so. Nowadays, it is $15 per person (used to be cheaper) and I would recommend you ask to talk to Lily. The actual location is a real hole-in-the-wall place down the street (Stevens Creek Blvd) from Santana Row and Valley Fair. Very Chinese flavors, ingredients, and dishes. Definitely popular among the older Chinese crowd. More importantly to me, it's the closest place to eat if you're visiting Barnes & Noble. It's in a strip mall, so plenty of parking since it has its own lot. Overall area is pretty noisy as it's on the corner of Stevens Creek and San Tomas while also in the middle of ALL the auto dealers, but most of that is pretty blocked out when you sit inside. Soong Soong is interesting in that its menu covers a variety of Chinese cuisines. They are a Chinese restaurant that genuinely seems to try to cover its bases on all the different kinds of Chinese cuisines. If you like smokier flavors, they're GREAT on that. We mostly get northern dishes from here, but will occasionally get the spicier variety of dishes as well. They're still open for takeout during the COVID-19 lockdown. You can order online or on the phone (they also give you the option to pay before pickup) and then you show up to pick up your food. I ordered their sticky rice rolls, oyster omelette, house special beef noodle soup, and sticky rice bowls for takeout. They packaged the soup and noodles separately, and the soup was still quite hot by the time I got to my destination. However the beef noodle soup wasn't that good and I've had better. The oyster omelette soup was a bit too soggy because the sauce had soaked into the omelette so I would only get this if I was dining in. However I would still patronize this place - I'd probably just get other things instead since their menu is so extensive. Taste and quality of cooking were spot-on. We added a little white pepper to taste, but that's just us. Kidney dish was great! Kidney quality was good and cook nicely to allow it to be tender. Maybe a tad spicy for me and I have a relatively high spicy threshold. Would be better to eat with rice. Service and staff were hustling, efficient and helpful but not bugging us all the time. Every time we have friends/family visiting, it's my parents' go-to place to bring people. Food here is authentic Chinese food and very delicious. They also have some more Americanized. choices, but I also really like those. The menu is super extensive so there are always new things to try. Our go to vegetable dish is their stir fry green beans. There's also a fried fish dish we love (小黄鱼), but I'm not too sure of the English name. When you first walk in, it immediately gives you that small mom and pop feel but when you open the menu it changes into a high quality fancy chef place. There's tons of good food to choose from and it was hard not to want to order all of the classics on the menu.
