So sad, this had been a go to spot for so many years as my kids went through university and now that we have moved here we have looked forward to more visits . Then one weekend after waiting in line ( more than a year ago) we ordered breakfast only to be told they had run out of potatoes! What!!! This was such an unbelievable disappointment , we didn't return until today to give it another chance. There haven't been any wait lines outside for months and perhaps today I understand why. I ordered the Florentine Bennie , they had potatoes today, but they were cold and undercooked, the spinach was so salty it was difficult to eat, there was an overall sour taste. When asked if everything was okay when the server picked up my half eaten plate I explained my experienced, they asked if I wanted something else, I said no. We did not get a discount or an apology . I shouldn't have to ask, and I understand why there are no longer lines waiting to get in. Maybe it started with potatoes with me but obviously it runs deeper internally. Decided to finally give this spot a go - and my conclusion is, I think it's a tourist trap! It's not bad, however it wasn't that good neither. The decor within is super clustery and messy looking, however for a old school diner, I guess that makes sense? - place was pretty clean for the most part. - very packed and quite noisy - The service team was super friendly, and checked on you frequently. Tried the BC Wild Sockeye Salmon Burger - with a side of fries - nothing special with the fries, they did there part. Come on!! it's a COSMIC place! It's supposed to be out of this world! It's been around forever and they are packed! BUT why a 3? For those who want a great spot for brunch in trendy money spot Kits, it's one of the places to go. For those who are in the know, they seem to go somewhere else. Look, the place has nostalgia written all over it - and all the decor too. So many trinkets and things from the past laden all over the walls. AND it attracts TOURISTS. As I have been calling Vancouver my 2nd home - literally, and it's been over 2 years of commuting from Toronto to Vancity, I really should know better. Most things in West 4th is for the temporary denizens of YVR - yes.. that mean tourists. First of all, the service - the best damn thing here!!! Lovely lovely people that do their best to ensure you get a feel good vibe while eating mediocre food. Seriously... 20+ bucks for some bennies per person. $60 for a couple of dishes, and a couple cups of coffee. These are eggs bennies... not the feel good bennies if you know what I mean. I don't mind paying for good food, but meh food is hard to swallow! I know BC stands for Bring Cash and being on West 4th in Kits is expensive for businesses but you have to deliver some value to diners. OK - a Greek Benny should have some feta, some veggie things, perhaps some tzatziki or some kind of lamb or other meats. It's not quite what we expected. I had their special and don't ask me if I remember what it was. I can tell you that it had eggs on top of some kind of meat on top of some kind of bread. Lots of potatoes on the side and it was HEAVY. Needed hot sauce or something with spice or acid to cut the layers of fat throughout the dish. I'm going to stop here now. No more needs to keep punching at this. Most of the great reviews are by tourists, first time in vancouver peeps, and those who are looking for HUGE portions. Checked out this cute little place for brunch today as my friend is opening a business near by so wanted to support the neighbours. First of all, this place is SO CUTE. The decor is super retro and fun, and you'll never get tired of staring at everything! If you're prone to overstimulation, however, it might be a bit much for you lol. There was no wait and our server was super nice. Food came out really fast and was definitely a decent breakfast and I thought the prices were fair, about $20 each. Nothing crazy or out of the ordinary, but definitely a standard diner breakfast if you're into that. I actually did think their fruit cup was really great though. Not the standard banana and melon boring stuff. The room was definitely more impressive than the food, but there's nothing to complain about there either. It's a super convenient location to meet with friends after shopping or taking one of the many exercise classes near by. The food and service were fine but I'm insulted by their shady practice of having their clients tip on the GST. My food was $39.00 and the GST was $1.95. What slightly irritated me was that they charge premium but give you low quality food. Even though, the staff seemed nice enough....I don't go out to eat to make friends. Why pretend to be a high end trendy brunch place and charge $20 per plate, when you can just rock serving good-old-fashioned grub grill scrapes and charge half that...and own it! Own what you do, stand up for it and be true to who you are. Ok...maybe I'm taking this a bit too seriously, but that's how it felt. The Greek Benny. Well. I didn't taste any feta at all. I asked for medium poached and got soft, and speaking of soft....the hash browns were soft and old instead of fresh and crispy. The two english muffins were sitting in a puddle of sauce. Guess what happens when you dip bread in sauce...it becomes what?.....Soggy. So, I had sauce underneath and on top of the english muffin and it tasted like I was having egg yolk sponge for breakfast. The quality has gone down significantly. The food is unflavored. I ordered their eggs Benedict with the cornbread (their special of the day) and left feeling like I could've made this better at home. I had to douse my food in hot sauce to feel even remotely satisfied. The beans felt like they opened a can and just heated it up. Potatoes were... mushy, bland, very very boring. Mid would be an over exaggeration. A bummer for a potato lover like me. It's saddening because my friends and I loved going here when we're in town, but this was our last time. The portions are huge and the interior makes you feel like you are in a movie and are dining in a classic retro diner. Served with 2 eggs any style, breakfast potatoes and toast Benedicts with Bacon $19.50 -- Poached eggs on an english muffin with homemade hollandaise and breakfast potatoes Waffles With Berries and Whipped Cream $17.50 Coffee $3.95 Orange Juice $5.00 Everything was delicious. My boyfriend mentioned that the Italian sausage was very similar to the one he had in Italy over the summer. I personally loved how crispy the bacon was. We had just stepped off the ferry to Vancouver, BC, and stumbled onto this wonderful family owned cafe. If all the tables are taken, do what we did and grab a counter stool because you really don't want to miss the food here. We were there for breakfast and did not wait long for our huge plates of eggs/omelette and overwhelming pile of breakfast potatoes. The price of the food was not nearly as overwhelming as the amount of food we got. The coffee was fresh and orange juice tasty. The ambience is very much the diner feel of this treasure which is near to celebrating 40 years of food service to their community, and the cleanliness spot on! Cute place! Sometimes I like kitschy decor and sometimes I hate it, but this place, despite being really cheesy, didn't feel over the top. I didn't get as good a look at all of it as I would've liked to, but I thought the shelf of sports trophies was particularly funny. Also the placement with the kid's drawing was so cute! Anyway, I'd never seen a reason to visit this restaurant because I'd had a few friends describe it as "hangover food", which is not something I have much use for, but another friend suggested it for lunch and I actually thought it was pretty good! The food came out amazingly fast after we ordered, yet everything tasted freshly prepared. I had the Jimmy's Greek Benedicts. I'd definitely say the flavours skewed more Spanish than Greek, and it was lighter on the feta than I was expecting, but nonetheless I really liked the sauce. The eggs were poached perfectly (the menu says that soft is the default if you don't specify, but the waitress still checked with me). I don't consider myself much of a potato fan, but I loved the breakfast potatoes! I liked that they weren't deep fried so they weren't greasy, dry, or crunchy, the green onions on top were a nice touch, and the house hot sauce was great. The portion size was generous, and I finished the whole thing but felt super full after - if it had been any larger I would've taken some home, but it was right in that sweet spot where I was just able to finish. I also got a crème brûlée shake. I asked if I could get the milk replaced with almond milk and they said yes and didn't charge extra. They serve it in a glass but give you the "overflow" in a metal cup, and there was about as much extra in the cup as there was milkshake in the glass, so although I finished the whole thing by myself (to my own surprise), you could easily split one. I would probably go for one of the many more distinct flavours next time since the crème brûlée just tasted like a slightly custardy vanilla, but it was a really good shake and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The sprinkles and cherry on top were a nice touch. I will say I think it's a little overpriced. Despite the generous portions, it is just diner food, and paying almost $30 (more with the tax and tip) for a benny ($19) and milkshake ($7.5) was a little disheartening. I would expect even really good diner food to be at a more affordable price, like maybe $16 max for the benny? The milkshake price was more justifiable because it was basically 2 milkshakes, but still I'd hope to pay ~$6 for this at a diner? But realistically, their rent in this neighbourhood might be high enough that this is what they actually have to charge to make ends meet so I don't want to judge them too harshly - I was just surprised that I ended up spending as much as I would've spent at one of Vancouver's bougie brunch spots at what looks like a diner. Our waitress was nice and perfectly attentive until we were done eating, where we sat around for a while after we were done waiting for her to take my friend's plate. My friend did have some salad left which I guess the waitress might've just been waiting for her to finish, but it was quite a long wait without her touching the salad that I was a little surprised we had to sit around for. After finally trying this place, I see why it remains so popular! It's not the place I'd chose to bring people visiting from out of town or recommend to tourists - I'd chose something a little more unique for that - but for people who live around here it's definitely a fun place to check out, and I'd be happy to visit again. read more

I haven't been to Sophie's for many years, but it looks much the same. It's worth a visit just for the decor. The service was quick and easy going. No complaints at all. I ordered waffles for old times sake and was I ever surprised. I'm not sure what recipe they are using for their waffles, but it's nothing I've ever experienced before, and I hope I never do again. They looked like waffles. They were cooked on a waffle iron but but what is that batter? Sconces? Bisquick? It seems vaguely familiar, just not at all waffle-ly. Inside out: It seems getting here is typical to most places in the area. We parked on a side road and walked. Inside is a fascinating display of all varieties of exciting items and pictures. I had a great time just looking at the walls and laughing at some of the things we found there. Seating is ample and the layout is nice. Service: friendly service and informative, our waitress joked with us and was incredibly helpful. The food was fast, checks and boxes a little slow. Food: The food was good a little above average. My friend got the salmon eggs Benedict and absolutely loved it. I got an omelette that was a bit saucy but I was warned, it was still good and the portions were huge. I drink coffee quickly and I think my cup was only refilled twice and I like to have a lot of coffee in the morning so that was a little sad. Over all visit while you're in the area! I'm wondering if this Vancouver fixture has recently changed management because otherwise there's no accounting for the popularity of this place. I ordered a salad off the lunch menu that for $29 (or for any price) was appallingly bad. Dry boxed greens with a few unimaginative slices of cucumber, tomato, and grated carrot, with grilled salmon that was dry and so badly burned it had a bitter, acrid taste. I could barely choke it down. My companion's meals were slightly more tolerable but nothing worth the $180 we paid for the five of us. Please steer clear. read more

ZERO STARS!!! FOOD POISONING OFF THE KIDS MENU Ate here a few times and at first I was mesmerized by Sophie's charm and the food seemed decent and the waitress was nice for like half our meal. Well after a few more visits the quality has take an drastic dive and so has the service. Second trip with friends and everyone was more then half way through their food before mine even hit the table. Food also didn't seem as good as the first time. Third trip the service was slow and they waitress basically admitted that she forgot to put our order in. This most recent time was the worse experience ever. Not only did the food take forever to reach the table it was quite disgusting. Ordered the classic Lumberjack breakfast with a waffle. Well the waffle were frozen supermarket waffles, the bacon was not crispy and tasted like it had been prepared in a batch, definitely worse taste the anything you would get at a hotel buffet. The eggs...well they are eggs. Also my son who ordered off the children's menu got food poisoning. Violent projectile vomiting from a 2 year is not what we ordered. I am throughly disappointed with Sophie's and think that was the last straw. I mean seriously there is no reason to have to wait for more then 40 minutes for a frozen waffle and food poisoning. Sophie's "diner" interior is wonderful! I love the red plush booth seats that they have. It's a decent-sized restaurant. We were a group of 8 and they kindly put up a couple of tables next to a booth to accommodate us. They have a wonderful selection of breakfast/brunch plates you can choose from; egg dishes, sweet dishes, omlettes, benedicts, sandos/burgers...and more! I got the ham eggs benny and I was not disappointed. I thought it was unique and customer-oriented of them to ask how runny I would like my poached egg on top (i.e. soft, hard, etc.). Their eggs benedict come with home-style fries. I liked how they fried up their home fries with spring onions with the fries! Gave it a good flavor. I was surprised to find myself finishing the entire plate of food. It's a decent portion that will leave you feeling just the right amount of full. I also noticed how UNgreasy their food was. I didn't leave feeling terrible which is a plus :D I got to try a bite of my friend's french toast - and WOW it was soft and a little toasty on the outside. First visit in a few years this past Monday for brunch . Our table of 5 plus a toddler sat outside and our server was accommodating with our group throughout thankfully. I ordered the cajun chicken sandwich which was so-so. It lacked flavour and i found myself adding salt to get any semblance of enjoyment from it. The fries that accompanied it were good however. For a $16 dish it did not meet expectations. Other dishes that came to our table were of a good quantity but nothing special quality wise. My partner thought her brunch dish was a 2 out of 5. For the price point($15 - $20) for most dishes you can do a lot better elsewhere. They do have a nice patio but parking is difficult to find in the area. I much prefer Bandidas and Jethros for brunch , though they have very different target audiences! read more

Milkshake heaven! Tried Sophie's for the first time this weekend and fell in love with their lavender earl grey milkshake. All the taste points of the lavender and earl grey really came through with each sip and the sweet creamy-ness was rich and full (as you want with a milkshake!) but not overwhelming. I was truly pleasantly surprised because I don't usually like milkshakes THIS much! They also have a huge menu of other flavours that I can't wait to try. The breakfast was okay. I had the Santa Fe Benny and my partner had a classic breakfast, eggs, sausage, toast and home fries. My partner asked for the egg to be over easy but it came out over hard which was a little disappointing but nothing to fuss over. The wait staff were all really nice and helpful and I'm sure would have fixed it had we asked, but we were just so hungry we ate it anyway. The Benny was definitely unique with the cornbread and salsa, which was cool, but turned out not to be my favourite flavour wise, and the home fries were a little on the drier side for my liking, but it did the job! one rainy sunday, woke up and felt the urge to simply go for big brunch feast...having worked my ass off the past few weeks, time to treat the fam to a well-deserved sunday brunch. off we went to kits to a magical place called sophies cosmic cafe! its designed with a lot of nostalgia reminiscient of old archie comic books..small town 24:7 diner. inside it was buzzing and we were fortunate to immediately get a table. service was quick and with a smile. a true family biz with the dad manning the front, and the daughters running the floor. we even got to be served by Sophie herself. the food however was average. there was no wow factor! the portions were huge and epic, and enough to fill you up and then some. moneys worth for sure bec you left stuffed.... but nothing like you cant re-create at home. the pancakes could use a bit more seasoning and buttermilk and butter. a better variety of ham would be better as well. the eggs benny were good but the hash that came with with was soggy and no longer crispy. also not seasoned well. overall we still enjoyed our stay and would re-visit as its an awesome brunch place. will try other entrees for sure. cheers! happy eating!! read more

Kits' Kitsch tchotchkes - Thousands of odd colorful objects adorn the walls, and bright colors abound. And staff to match - just wacky enough to be fun (dancing slightly as she took our order) without being odd or uncomfortable. Definitely a fun place to visit. And a constant lineup of half a dozen waiting outside the whole time we were there. Oh yes, the food. Big portions of standard diner food, and definitely made in house - even the ketchup and hot sauce. Perfectly done eggs benedict with just enough Hollandaise so it didn't feel too indulgent. Super touristy, super cheesy, super awesome! After the Jam Cafe disappointment I decided to try Sophie's, which I avoid generally because it's so busy. On a Wednesday afternoon we popped in and were seated right away. Staff here are very friendly and they are working hard in this busy diner! The memorabilia is awesome with fantastic photos on the wall and retro stuff like those old metal lunch boxes lol. So much to look at and take in; definitely has that old 50's diner feel to it. They have the original Coca Cola bottles built into the railing about some of the booths. If you order a coke you get it in the original style glass bottle :) Sophie's is the perfect diner to take a friend visiting from out of town, which is exactly what I did! The menu is a good size offering everything from all day brunch to burgers and salads. Oh, they have milkshakes!!!! I was feeling breakfast and with the the healthy option of their "Light breakfast" which came with two perfectly poached eggs, your way, toast (including a gluten free option), ham or maple smoked bacon and a side salad or a fruit cup. I havd the gluten free toast, just to try it and it was the best gluten free toast I have ever had. The fruit cup totally hit it outta the park as well. Normally, I shy away from fruit cups because you usually get a useless cup of melon and cantaloupe (not a fan!). This fruit cup was awesome with kiwi, banana slices, fresh sliced oranges, melon, and grapes! Loved the healthy options, loved my brunch! It's been years since I've been back here and boy was I disappointed. The potato hash browns were not crispy; they were more like boiled soggy lumps of luke warm mush. The toast was burnt and unbuttered and when we asked for butter we were given cold squares that broke our toast. Now while that's actually not the end of the world, we asked ended up asking for less burnt toast. When it arrived, it was was way more burnt and inedible. The funny thing though was they stacked it burnt side in so when it was served it actually looked ok. Overall the food was a big disappointment: food was not very warm and not very tasty. I used to go here when it was the Arbutus Cafe, years ago, It used to be owned by the Beretanos family. Everybody knew them, loved them and all the great meals they offered. Now sadly It is nothing special, just another over priced place to eat on 4th avenue, with a bunch of Kitsilano yuppies that have no clue about how wonderful it used to be, back in the day.
