This business used to be great and honest!!! But after new management they are absolutely horrible!!! Brandon the manager is rude beyond belief and untrustworthy. And if you question him he rudely hangs up on you after telling you that there is no one else to speak to--only him no supervisor no manager!! Hello Yelpers! So I wanted to provide an update on my review for South Lakes Sunoco that was written on 3/28/2016. It seems the management team (Brandon) responded to my post from February 6th (almost a year later) and somewhat apologized for my bad experience...I guess? I would share with you his condescending response to me, but he later went back to DELETE HIS COMMENT!! All I can share now is my response to him. In a nutshell, the response was written in a way that BLAMED ME for rejecting the $2.00, and calling them liars which was wayyy over the line for Brandon (based on his opinion). The first time I tried to take my car to this place to get an oil change, I was told they were too busy and that I would have to come back another day. It was about 3:30 in the afternoon. Minor inconvenience, but no big deal. I ended up going somewhere else out of convenience. Recently, I took my car there for a simple inspection. When I got there, there were two cars in front of me in line. There's only one clipboard to fill out your information so you have to wait for the person in front of you before you can begin filling out the paperwork. Then, you have to wait with your car until all of the cars in front of you have been inspected and they're ready to pull it into the garage. I was planning on getting some work done at the Starbucks next door but couldn't because I had to wait with my car instead. I want to like this place because it's the closest service station to my house, however the way they run things there seem to be all about what's most convenient for them, rather than the customer. I think I'll go elsewhere in the future. read more

Brought my BMW in for an oil change (which I've done several times before). A few days after, my "check engine" light came on. I took my car to the dealership and they asked me if someone did an oil change for me. I told them Sunoco in Reston did and they said, "that makes sense." Apparently, they removed a necessary piece from the oil housing which caused a leak and extensive damage. I went back to Sunoco and was told the manager would get in touch with me. I think they should be responsible for paying the total BMW repair bill (over $2,000) but I said I would settle for a refund on my oil change from Sunoco and the repeat oil change and part from BMW. Unfortunately, they didn't feel my problem warranted a follow up so I caution anyone thinking about getting any work done here. read more

I had a brake job and safety inspection ordered. Promised by 2pm, not ready until 6pm, so I opted to pick it up the next day. When I got there, although listed on the invoice, the safety inspection had not yet been done. I got a coffee at Starbucks while they rushed it through. They were sincerely mortified and reduced my bill by about 13%. The work is satisfactory....,,,,,,,,,,,,,,...so far:)) I guess that explains why that Starbucks is always so busy:))) read more

My seventy-six year old mother took her car up for an oil change and inspection two days ago. They called today to say that her car "failed" inspection because the driver side tire lug-nut was rusted on and they could not get the tire off. I called the Manager Keith Freitas and he said they cannot complete the inspection without taking the tire off. I said and that costs $64 dollars. Yes ma'am it includes labor. Really Keith. Really! I'm now waiting to hear about her brakes after reading the previous reviews and hope her credit card is not misused. As someone posted before the place has gone downhill since Wayne left. I believe Keith is taking advantage of my mother and I will not recommend this place of service to anyone I know. read more

I've been a customer of Reston Mobil on South Lakes shopping center for years, and have never had a complaint with the repair shop, However, they have a sort of 7/11 for gas stations adjacent to the shop. While my car was being inspected, the jerk behind the counter wouldn't let me wait for 20 minutes in there, even tho no one else was in the place. He glared at me until I felt compelled to leave and stand outside in the (unseasonably) cold wind. Not a huge deal, but it pissed me off enough to go to the trouble of writing this review. Quick and honest service. I took my Nissan Altima here to get my serpentine belt replaced per the recommendation of the dealership. They took a look at it and told me the belt had no signs of cracking or glazing and did not need to be replaced. I know plenty of other places (like the dealership) would just replace it to make a quick buck, so I really appreciated their honesty. They also performed a state inspection in less than an hour. I will definitely be coming here as my go to repair shop! read more

South Lakes Sunoco is everything you could want in a car repair business. I have been a customer for 18 years. They have always been quick, reasonably priced, and honest. They are great about calling to give you status updates. When they need to order a part, they usually receive it the same day or the next day, and always finish the work expeditiously. They are friendly. There is a Starbucks right next door. In sum, it's the ideal neighborhood car repair shop! read more

Want to thank Brandon and the guys at Sunoco. I wanted them to patch a tire, but they couldn't based on where the nail puncture was and put on my spare for free. After rotating my tires I noted one tire going flat. Showed manager. He said no, it's just because of weight of engine. I drove away, felt wobbly. Stopped at gas station, only 10 lbs air in that tire, should be 36 psi. Added air. Leaked out again. I took it back advising them tire must've picked up sharp object while on their property. They acknowledged that, but refused to repair it at their expense. Felt like bs. Also they broke a lug nut while putting tire back on and the wheel lock socket was stripped, he says that happens sometimes and I had to buy 4 new lug nuts to replace. Not sure about that, maybe true. Just sounds weird. Spark plug change went fine. read more

Replaced my alternator for $776 which died while my 19 year old was driving to Penn State late at night. Towed to a Ford Dealer who diagnosed bad alternator and battery and replaced BOTH for $650. I asked for a refund on the part alone (not the labor) and they refused. Ripoff and more expensive than the dealer. Not my first bad experience. Stay away!! And I never right reviews. read more

In August 2017, I brought my car to South Lakes Sunoco for the annual VA Safety Inspection. The safety inspector (Aira or Ayra or Aara) rejected my car and provided me a list of 9 items that needed to be repaired. The total repair bill would be several thousand dollars. He even refused to talk to me about the details of the safety inspection and the basis of the rejection. Within the stipulated time of 15 days, I took my car to another VA Safety Inspection place and they flagged ONLY one item: the muffler. I got it replaced spending $315 at another local muffler shop; brought back the car to the other safety inspection place and my car passed the safety inspection. I think the South Lakes Sunoco are racketeers to extort $$$ from the innocent customers in the name of VA Safety. The inspector (Aira or Ayra or Aara) is a crook and skilled in extortion. NEVER go to South Lakes Sunoco for any car repair. read more

Extremely disappointing; in future I'll plan to avoid this place like poison. They used to be good under the previous manager - one could trust his word, but my trust of the current crew has evaporated. In autumn of 2017, I had an inspection done in which my (older Ford) car was failed for needing a window motor AND regulator; I left it for them to do the work, and when the Mgr called to say it was ready, he never mentioned they'd only completed half the job; I was charged $345 for a motor and labor, but no part cost for a regulator which I didn't notice on the bill, but in trying to use the window, it wasn't functioning a bit better, still slamming up into the door frame plus they destroyed the arm rest and left bunches of wires exposed. I now wonder if the motor itself was replaced. While the warranty said 2 yrs, and still has a few months remaining, I found them so devious and unpleasant to deal with I'm reluctant to return since I wouldn't trust them to actually do it. When I did go back for the 2018 inspection, they failed my car for wiper blades and no bright lights, which they wanted $112/hr just to "investigate"; and instead of checking brakes on the front wheel where they'd already lost my center cover, the inspector did the other side and broke a piece out of that center cover. The mgr called to say he had ordered 6 different sets of wiper blades and couldn't find any that worked so it would be "easier" if I drove to an auto parts store to get those myself. I said not easier for me, since I came to his station for the inspection because it was closest, so I didn't want to do extensive driving to get blades that a service station couldn't locate; mine had worked fine when I drove there in the rain. He called back to say, he found some but the price was $52, which I declined and went back to get the car on which they'd slapped a rejection sticker dated Aug 1 instead of the date I was actually there - Sep 1 - thus I had to drive back again and get the sticker date corrected, so my condo wouldn't tow me for not doing repairs within 15 days. My daughter then took the car to an inspection station that knew how to turn headlights onto bright without requiring a $112 fee to investigate; (I didn't know myself as I don't drive at night.) I regret to say I'm finding a huge problem locating a knowledgeable and competent auto repair shop that doesn't prey on the elderly, and I would recommend watching very carefully if not a mechanic yourself. I don't know what has happened recently to their service. I have been displeased the last two times I've taken my car. First, they replaced the exhaust system, next time they needed to replace the clutch which meant removal of the exhaust system. When I got the car back it was clear the exhaust was leaking so I took it back. They repaired the leak and I then got a $400 bill for service to the exhaust system for issues they caused when they replaced the clutch, they were the only ones who did anything to cause the exhaust leak and I got a bill for $400. I also asked to repair a squeak that was noticeable to people that walked by outside the car, they said they heard no squeak. Next I took it back several months later to have a leak in a tire repaired(the tire would go almost flat in a couple of days), I also asked for the clutch pedal to be adjusted. 3 days later I needed to call to check on what I thought was a 1 day job. They said there was nothing wrong with the clutch and they could find no nails in the tire. I told them I've been driving the car for 20 years and never had the clutch go all the way to bottom to engage so there was clearly something wrong that needed to be done to get it to engage correctly. With the tire, it was almost flat, I said if you can't find a nail then clearly there is something causing the tire to go flat, find out what that is and fix it. These are both really simple things and 3 days later nothing has been done. I won't be going back and wouldn't recommend them to anybody anymore, they used to be real good but seem clueless lately. read more

These guys are always very helpful and honest when I bring my car in. They have even helped refill my stroller tires when I run by in the jogging stroller. We brought our car in for safety inspection the day we were leaving for a week vacation (bad idea!) we needed new brakes that wouldn't be ready for a couple days. I thought I was going to cry - then they rushed the part and got the job done within a few hours. Amazing! read more

I needed to get my brake pads replaced, and I was recommended by a friend to take my car here. I called asking if I needed to make an appointment or if I can just drop the car off, and the gentleman on the phone said either would work. When I arrived, the same gentleman who answered the phone took my car information and told me he would call me before close of business with a price quote for repair. Not an hour later, I received that phone call and I thought I was getting a good deal so I told them to go ahead and fix the issue. Car was ready the next day and everyone I encountered here was friendly, knowledgable, and most importantly, trustworthy. I've used a lot of repair shops in the past and more times than not, I felt like these other competitors would try to pull a fast one and rip me off. I was very pleased with South Lakes Sunoco and next time I have a needed repair, I will be sure to take my car there. read more

I feel sad to give South Lakes Sunoco a poor review, because for at least 30 years it has been the go-to place for ethical car repair in our greater Reston community. We could always recommend SL Sunoco to neighbors, as well as friends who'd driven to Reston from out of town. We will still go to this location for inspections, because the fellow who does inspections is a pro -- efficient, knowledgeable, and a real gentleman. Unfortunately, however, I have had two sketchy experiences with the auto repair services department: About a year ago I asked for a written estimate for new tires on my car. I indicated that I wanted the best tires. The estimate I received gave a premium price, but NO detail about the brand name of the tire--which varies a lot and makes a difference. A bit shady not to name the brand, since if I hadn't known better, I could have paid the premium price quoted, but for so-so tires. And just 10 days ago, I went into this station to get my brake lights changed. I even had an appointment, and I gave them the make of my car in advance. When I got there, they assigned an "entry level" employee to do the work. His eyes wide with alarm, he undertook the work, looking confused the whole time. He had to get help several times, waiting till someone could come over to show him how to do the work. This caused significant delay in a relatively simple task. What shocked me was that they charged me for the whole time the entry level employee was being trained on how to change the bulbs. When I complained, the manager did refund a portion of the exorbitant charge, but he wasn't very nice about it. Bottom line: I don't think a customer should have to pay for an employee's training time. Auto repair is notorious for shady practices; I wish Sunoco South Lakes would get back to their spotless reputation, where we didn't even have to wonder about their ethical standards. read more

Beware of this service station. They replaced an engine mount for me. When I picked up the car, I detected a little vibration in the engine. Did not pay attention assuming that this must be some adjustment. But it did not go away and I brought the car back in a week. Now they say that the other mount has gone bad because I drove for a week. Quoted $350 for the additional work, This all to me reflects very dishonest dealing and now owning up to their work. Wow, I'm amazed to see that this place has 4.1 average rating. Must be the same person with different aliases!! I can't believe they had the audacity to even ask for a review on the receipt. Lets just say I will never return nor will I recommend the scammers to anyone I know. Typically I do service on my own car but did not have the time to do so this time. I went in on August 25th and asked for a simple ""OIL CHANGE"" and ""TIRE ROTATION"" I figured since I had no luck with service garages since I've moved to Northern Virginia in the past 3 years I would give this place a try. I needed to find a place that I can drop my car off as I work during the day and can walk over to get it at the end of the day. Needless to say this was my first and last time I will go to this place. Unless you're some sensless idiot that likes to spend money on things that doesn't need to get done feel free to go there. That morning I dropped my car off for the ooil change and tire rotation, 1 hour later I get a call from the desk clerk saying the oil change was complete and the car was ready. And he proceeded to tell me that he had a few recommendation that need to be done. He says that the tech pulled one of my spark plugs out and said they looked bad and needed to be replaced and this was recommended as my care was high miles. Next he said I needed a radiator flush and fuel injectors cleaned all at a nice price of $1,028.09. I proceeded to tell the young man that it's impossible for the tech to check the spark plug as I did it one year ago and you have to remove the entire manifold from over the head to even get to one spark plug and it's impossible for him to even do an oil change tire rotation and remove all that within an hour. See not everyone that pulls into your garage is eat up with the dumbass, some of us know the history of our cars. I've had this car since it had 12 miles on it. and I've kept every service record. Anyway this place is a scam and I don't recommend anyone even getting gas from this place. If you need to go to CVS turn right towards Safeway you might get robbed just driving by this place. I can't velieve the owner can even sleep at night knowing this is going on. I know I'm wasting my time even writing this review but I hope I can at least get one person to stay clear of this place. Go somewhere that os honest and trusting. And all these idiots that gave 4 or 5 stars you must be some rich idiots looking to just waste your money and have no clue. Last time I took my car there for an oil change, they gave me a list of things wrong with that would cost $750 to fix - or else I wouldn't pass inspection. Turns out none of them needed to be done and my car passed with flying colors at a different shop. One of the things was changing my transmission fluid. I have a Honda and according to several other mechanics (both Honda and general ones), you have to use Honda specific fluid or bad things happen. Sunoco didn't know about this issue. Based on this experience I'm staying away. Too bad. When Wayne was there the place was great. read more

Took my car here for a safety inspection. I'm standing around for 20 minutes waiting when the inspector comes out and tells me I'm failing because my car doesn't have catalytic converters. I tell him he's incorrect and head into the service area, where I'm met by the "emissions specialist". I actually got down under the car and pointed the parts out to him. He insists that what I am pointing at are a pair of mufflers and from there a 10 minute argument ensues. I insist that he's looking at an OEM BMW exhaust midsection with two working catalytic converters but he wouldn't have it. He then decides to take it to Google (seriously) and finds that I was correct, but now he wants to put my car on the lift in order to take a closer look. I reluctantly agree. They bring my car over to the lift bay and are attempting to position the arms under the cars jack points. The front was too low for the arms so instead of using a jack to lift the car, he attempts to lift up my car with his hands by pulling up on the hood!! I abruptly order him to stop what he was doing and to take my car out of the bay. From there, he places a rejection sticker on my car that reads "POSSIBLE missing catalytic converter" and mysteriously waves the $16 inspection fee. From there I drove to Vienna to get another inspection. I was in and out with a good sticker in 20 min. I will never patronize this gas station again. read more

They are very helpful and reasonably priced and they have been able to fix everything I have needed done - brakes, minor electrical problems, oil changes, battery replacement, etc. for much less than the dealer. I have used South Lakes Sunoco for years for auto maintenance and repairs, and have been consistently pleased with their service. The manager and assistant manager are always pleasant and helpful. Over the many years I have taken my car there, only once was there an "issue" with a difficult to diagnose problem. However, the manager worked quickly to resolve the situation to my complete satisfaction. It is clear to me that customer service is of the utmost importance to them. Since new management came in this Sunoco station is great. The folks who run the service side are very friendly and professional.

BEWARE before pumping gas or diesel fuel here - the pumps are negligently maintained and are dangerous. The diesel pump today took over 10 minutes to pump 13 gallons, then the automatic shutoff failed (thankfully, I was standing right beside the pump), and then I couldn't get the pump to stop even after I released the trigger. Diesel fuel went EVERYwhere - all over my car, new tire, wheel, pants, leather boots, and hands. I went inside to tell someone, had to explain the problem 3 times, and still got only a blank expression from the clerk and a dismissive laugh from the mechanic saying the "gas smell" would fade soon (pro tip, diesel is not the same as gas and does NOT fade). I had to prompt them to put the "dirt" on the diesel fuel which was by that point running all over their lot. I told them they should bag the pump until it could be fixed so this did not happen to anyone else, and they said they would, but I drove by 30 minutes later...no bag. Looking at the past reviews, at least part of this has clearly been an issue for at least two months, and they just don't care. Cheaper diesel is not worth the $12 car wash, hour of my time, and leather boots I am now out because of this negligent station. read more
