Whenever I travel, I enjoy trying local restaurants and tend to avoid chains. I discovered this place based upon its positive Yelp reviews. The restaurant is located in a small shopping center and has a colorful sea related decor inside. I came here to specifically try the Shrimp Charleston, and I was not disappointed. The dish includes Blackened Shrimp and Nettles Country Smoked Sausage, topped with fried cheese grits, seafood bisque and chives. It tasted savory, fresh and flavorful. I call places like this a hidden gem. Everyone in my group turned their nose up at the idea of coming to this place based on the location. Ohhhh how fast those tables turned. When I tell you everything was Amazing? I promise if I weren't on a diet I'd be back there tonight! Don't sleep on this place yes it's in a strip mall don't let that fool you! This was some of the best food!!!!!!! And service was over the top! The beer was cold , onion petals better than that chain restaurant spot, homemade salad dressing, awesome shrimp dip complimentary on table with crackers that was soo good! I and some of my colleagues from work have come to Southern Shores for lunch on several occasions, including right after it first opened. The food is delicious.Try the fried combo of shrimp , scallops and oysters or the stuffed flounder. Their sides are all very good. Maybe the best hushpuppies I have ever eaten. The service is excellent. They have one of the friendliest wait staffs in town--all of them. The food is hot and delicious. The service is great. The place is clean. This place will be around for a long time. I say that because several other good restaurants preceded it. Good places with good food. But, for some reason, none of them lasted. My in-laws were visiting from Tampa for the holiday weekend, and we wanted to them to experience the greatness of your restaurant! Jasmine was our server and she was phenomenal. She was very patient with the two 'senior citizens' in our party. :) She was friendly and efficient and engaging. We had two apps: corn nuggets and fried squash. The corn nuggets were good - they were sweet; the fried squash was a bit bland. We all had fried shrimp with either scallops or chicken tenders, with different sides. What a great addition to the Lakewood area!!! It was opened about 2 months ago and has great seafood options. It feels like a mom & pop place and has pictures of people (maybe family?) catching all kinds of fish. I didn't catch our server's name but she was very helpful and answered all my questions. The hush puppies were :delicious! Perfectly seasoned and light and crispy. It seems hard to believe, but most seafood restaurants Ive been to have terrible hush puppies, but not at Southern Shores!! I take my mom out to lunch every other week & we both love seafood. We were excited to try the newly-opened SSS & had a positive experience. Our server, Trinity was an absolute sweetheart & took great care of us. The staff all seemed to be working together happily & seamlessly which is quite impressive for a new spot. I didn't get shots of my mom's food but she had a cup of oyster stew & the flounder/fries basket. She did not love the stew overall (says hers is better, haha) so she ate the oysters out of it. She said the flounder & fries were delicious. I got the blackened shrimp lunch entree with cheese grits and green beans as my sides. My family had been hearing some rumblings about a new seafood place in the old Lakewood Pharmacy shopping center, so, I had to go check it out. Good thing I did too, because Southern Shores is doing just about everything right when it comes to making great seafood coupled with genuine respect and care for the customers. So, it was 2pm on a Sunday and when my friend and I walked in the placed was PACKED. Luckily there were some seats at the bar, so we sat there - which allowed us to enjoy a cold draft IPA and watch some football on their screens, which are just enough. It's not a sports bar by any means, but it is a lively place worth dining in. And that's mainly because the people there are all well managed, happy, knowledgable and generally having a good time serving customers. Now onto the food. For starters, it's important to know that Southern Shores is run by a multi-generation seafood family, as the owner's family founded Cedar River Seafood - which is a legendary, ol' chain around Florida. So they know a thing or two about what they're doing. I had the Oyster Stew, a cream and butter stew with whole oysters in it. They were great. Then we also had Fried Crawfish Tails, which is something I've never even heard of before but certainly delicious. And for my. meal, I ordered the Stuffed Flounder which was amazing. My buddy ordered the Clam Strips and they were very lightly battered and super tasty. Also, the prices here are very reasonable. So you can try a bunch of different things without spending a ton. In general, this is an easy 5-star review and if I had to guess, it's going to become a local go-to for many Jacksonville seafood lovers for the foreseeable future. read more

Only being opened a couple of weeks, Southern Shores provided friendly and attentive service as they started us with some complimentary shrimp dip and crackers as we sat down. Our waiter Kyle was on point and our food arrived fast even while the restaurant was about 90% full. There was just the right amount of decor on the walls for the southern seafood vibe and the light fixtures above the tables were a classy touch - not too pretentious and better than basic. While I wanted to choose the dockside double (pick 2), catfish was not an option. Since my wife decided to order fried shrimp, I was able to order the whole catfish dinner knowing there would be some shrimp available for me to enjoy. :) For my sides, I opted for grits and collards and both were well executed. Portions were ample and prices were fair. This was like a throwback to the days of St. Johns seafood back in its heyday when they were all over town. Count us in as fans. read more

We took our family here when they came to visit and it turned into a great night of eating. I was surprised when arriving that it was at the end of a strip mall but the inside of this place is very welcoming with lots of great decor. Though they don't have an extensive drink menu I was able to get a glass of wine and that was good. I also ordered devil crab because I've never had it before and wanted to try it it's a play on stuffed crab back and it was. It was good. It wasn't my cup of tea, but it was enjoyable. It needed less breading the stars of the show for me where the crab legs and the lobster tail. Both of those were cooked to perfection. We both decided to order from the lunch menu and chose the combo that allows two main choices and comes with hush puppies and two sides. My blackened shrimp was fantastic, yummy without being too salty. My other main choice was clam strips. They were crispy and delicious, you could tell the oil used to fry was fresh as well. My husband chose fried flounder and clam strips, his flounder was light and flaky, again deliciously fried in fresh oil. We each chose two sides and shared to try they all. My favorite was the green beans, cooked in a garlic butter, they were firm and lightly coated in the garlic butter. The mac and cheese was good, very creamy. The flavor of the sweet potato soufflé was tasty but had only one texture, I would have loved a crumble or chopped nuts added. We sat at the bar with Kyle. The servers all work together it was awesome! We started out with the Crawfish Tails app and it was so delish! I had the Oyster Stew and there was nothing "stew" about it. Very watery but the oysters in it were nice and plump! Probably wouldn't order it again. Hubby had Suzie's trio and liked it. I had the Shrimp Charleston that has a base of Lobster Bisque and it needed more of that but overall was tasty. It is beer and wine only. Credit card fees are a cost of doing business and should be reflected in menu pricing - not sneaking them on the bill as a fee. When we inquired about how much longer we were told we were next then they called 3 other people before us. I let that go too. Then finally we sit down and at the 8 minute mark we got up and left.
