Service was abysmal. The food was slow and the quality inconsistent. And we were overcharged for food. It took 15 minutes to get water, 40 minutes to get the hummus plate we ordered. The server never came by to refill water or check on our food. I had to stand at the bar for 5 minutes to get my water refilled. The $14 hummus appetizer was two tablespoons of dry hummus (with a few delicious deep fried chickpeas on top), stale pita and barely cut vegetables (it was like being served giant horse sized carrots and cukes). I ordered the Asian salad with chicken breast ($15 salad + $4 for the chix). The food was delivered while I was getting my water. Was disappointed to find my salad was not dressed and on a flat plate so no way of tossing it without losing half my salad and making a mess. I politely hailed the server and asked for the kitchen to please toss my salad in the dressing. The restaurant refused to toss my salad, told me I couldn't order another dish (telling me it would take the kitchen 1.5 hrs to make me anything) and told me they were going to charge me for the salad even though I sent it back since it was not what I ordered. I agreed to eat the +$4 chicken I had added. The owner/chef insisted that I would still be charged for the salad since they gave me what I ordered, that not all details are listed on the menu and that it is standard that they don't dress salads. As a first (and clearly last) time customer, I was unaware of this since it was not stated on the menu nor explained by the server. The owner finally relented to not charge for me the salad. When the bill came, they tried to pass through some of the cost anyway - they removed a cheaper salad from the bill that someone else in my party ordered and doubled the price of my chicken. When I alerted the server, she was not interested in correcting the bill. We wanted to be done with the disappointing meal and just paid and left. read more

I was looking for a restaurant that had quality food in my new town. After moving to Crestline, I realized that the quality of restaurants has lessened from the LA area. But, I stumbled upon a gem in Spade and Spatula. I had the vegan patty instead of the regular beef patty in the Cheese Burger while my boyfriend had the Blue Cheese Blue Jay Burger. My boyfriend has not stopped talking about that burger. And my homemade vegan patty cheese burger was delicious. I'd like to go back and try the Mac and cheese. I'm sure my boyfriend will only be getting his blue cheese burger, going forward. :) I have to add, that a review stood out to me to be false and I suspect a hater in town.... Kelley G seems to claim she's been in the restaurant and saw some sort of political agenda of the owner. There is nothing political about a rainbow flag or BLM sign. It's about human decency and acceptance of minorities. "Kelley G" also claims to come from a police family. That is ironic because one of Kelley's numerous negative reviews is of the Irvine police department. I don't like seeing wonderful people or businesses threatened by unstable people with exaggerated and hateful agendas. My husband and I went here for lunch on a Thursday just as it opened at Noon. We were hungry! Upon walking in we were greeted kindly by the very friendly Host, whose name we found out is "Naum". Here is what we had and it was ALL freshly made, ample portions and above all, DELICIOUS! Btw: We could see the Chef preparing all our food from the "open" kitchen. This place had such a warm and inviting atmosphere. We started with coffee for one of us--it came in a 16 oz French Press to serve at our table. Naum made sure to "press" the coffee for us at the right moment. The coffee was GOOD! Naum offered cream or half & half. My husband took the cream! I also wanted a cold non alcohol drink and Naum recommend a kombucha. They had "Babe Kombucha" and 5 or 6 flavors on hand. I chose a passion fruit & mint kombucha and it was served by the cold can along with a tall glass. Perfect! Next we ordered an Appetizer. We chose the Hummus plate. It came with WARM pita bread halves and fresh veggies for dipping into a house made hummus. It was very filling! All the dishes turn out to be ample portions!! See our photo. For our main meal my husband had a California Burger made with a wagu patty (my husband said it was a tender patty!), topped with avocado, cheese, garlic aioli AND served with FRESHLY made potato fries!!! There was plenty to share with me. :) I ordered the Beef Dip and it came with a load of beef on a medium roll and served with au jus for dipping. It came with a choice of fries or a salad and I chose the fresh salad. The fresh cucumbers were crisp! We were both so happy with our meals!! I took home most of my Beef Dip sandwich as I had filled up on the Hummus platter, lol! I rewarmed my Beef Dip the next day for lunch and it was still so good! Ordered a burger and didn't get asked how to have it made, so the assumption is medium well. It came out bloody on the plate and smelled raw. Eww! 55 minute wait for that? Being part of the LGBTQ+ Community and being longtime advocates for diversity, we were attracted to Spade and Spatula. We had written the restaurant last week about their hours. We are double checking hours for most restaurants as we all emerge from the pandemic. The owner (Beverly) promptly responded with a sweet email. Very kind! Joe and I drove from Running Springs where our AirBnB cabin was. Spade and Spatula was a terrific experience. The place was full and the young woman waiting tables Monday afternoon did a phenomenal job to attend to everyone. We were seated by two women in their late 40s (slightly younger than us) and we had a great conversation with them that lasted through our meals. The meal was delicious. The Vegan Burger was fresh and tasty and had great spice. The Pastrami Sandwich (I added grilled onions) was SO good. Fries were crispy and hot. And, crunchy pickle spears served with the sandy. I have let our AirBnB hosts know about Spade and Spatula and told them to recommend this gastro pub to their guests. It was a memorable lunch during our short getaway trip. I understand we came with a group of 5+ so slower service is expected but it took nearly an hour and we were all starving by the time the food arrived. They have a good menu with better than average, creative selections, including a few vegan options which can be hard to find in the area. The staff are all very friendly. Good craft beer selection, even though it's small, they don't default to the more common ones you see everywhere else. The jalapeño margarita was nice and spicier than most, which I loved. We ordered the avocado tacos and the charbroiled bella cheesesteak in hopes to be somewhat healthy...but we messed up because we also got the beignets. Whatever...we were so dang impressed with the mushroom cheesesteak, it was hearty but not too heavy and the ratios were on point. The avo tacos were bomb too! They were almost too pretty to eat with the blue corn tortillas and the crispy onion strings, but after the first bite you're reminded that they'll be better in your stomach rather than on a plate. My wife and I searched for a Vegan restaurant on the hill and we were pleasantly surprised by this restaurant who caters to vegetarians, vegans as well as "conventional" meat lovers. We had two different kinds of Veggie burgers and they were both amazing. We loved the fact that the chef didn't go running to the "Impossible meat" (which is actually high in fat). Instead Bev the owner/chef had her own recipe for the veggie patty and it was so very good! Finally, Bev is not only talented but such a great person. The meat that is served in restaurants is often low-quality, probably because they fed the animals cardboard. Spade and spatula has that best probably grass fed beef around town. Still, it is rather an unpleasant experience to sit outside in the heat for about an hour with a 4 year old waiting for brunch. There is shade but it is not completely covered and the sun gets through from time to time. The brunch menu is more limited than I was expecting. If you know going in that this is a slow and casual place to for brunch, you may really love it. If you are trying to grab a quick breakfast burrito before getting to play on the lake, you'll probably be disappointed. Also, if I had been aware that it would take so lunch to bring the food, I would have ordered a juice while I waited. They completely forgot to bring my daughter's omelette until later. Generally, they only checked on one of the two tables that were part of our group, and took the dessert order from the one table without even asking us on the other side. Lastly, another server brought my fruit plates out. When I said they were mine, she nearly pulled one out of my hands and walked away.
