We hired them for a weekend move, and they were able to accommodate us with a Sunday crew, giving them only 4 days notice. Josh, our moving consultant, made numerous calls to get us to use them, and - then - failed to send out (eMail) the final Contract without several requests. Josh explained everything to us, so there would be no surprises. We paid for their Gold Service (full packing and unpacking). So far, we can only find 1 broken item (an expensive, Lalique wine glass). I used a separate company (Josh's insistence) for moving insurance. My chief complaint is that the crew did little in the way of organizing when they unpacked (I guess, what did I expect from them after working 10 hours). My main praise is their use of reusable, plastic packing boxes for a reduction in waste. They even used picture boxes from prior jobs. Unfortunately, the move took several hours longer than estimated. Because we had a "binding cost" contract, we were limited in the amount of over time that we had to pay for. We recently completed a complex move with Spartan and could not be more delighted with the service. Spartan picked up about 3/4 of our household goods, stored for 8 months while we lived in a temporary location, then picked up the remainder from the temporary home, consolidated the two loads and delivered to our retirement home in Washington. With two very minor exceptions, all of our possessions arrived intact, and Spartan went beyond the contract to make us whole on the minor exceptions. Thank god for Spartan Van Lines and the amazing staff ! My wife and I spent the last 2 years studying in Texas. We have moved from San Antonio back to San Francisco lately and checked a few different moving companies prior to our move out date, when focusing on budget as well as customer service, some background check because of stories we have heard from friends about experiences they've had with other companies throughout the states. This company really stands out of them all I love it when I see a low tech company taking this kind of service to a completely different and unexpected level. There was definitely a good reason why this Yelp account looks the way it is, in all matters! At first when we made our decision to go with them after we have checked pricing with all the other vendors the dates we wanted were taken..the owner himself got involved to make sure to help us and really put so much effort to make the impossible happen for us. It was heart warming and just a great thing to see the level of care even for a small 3 bedroom move like we had. The delivery was right on the scheduled date and time, all items have been delivered to the new place without a scratch! As they professionally wrapped and covered everything. This morning Eddie, Adam, Daniel, and Jonathan moved us out of our apartment, and they were awesome. The process was super efficient but they were also careful and thoughtful. As usual, I am amazed at how the pros can make quick work of ginormous boxes and heavy furniture, and this fine crew made it look easy. Eddie was a solid crew leader and the rest of the crew were really sweet and respectful...they seemed like really kind guys. Our moving consultant Will was thorough and available when needed, helping us update our inventory as late as last night. Spartan exceeded my expectations and I would absolutely recommend them and use them again. They have a great business model and our move went more smoothly than I thought possible, even during the busiest time of year. Our initial consultation with Will made me feel confident we were in good hands and Will stayed on call throughout the move to guide us through the process. When their estimate came back at roughly half the price and half the time as the other two nationally-recognized moving companies we spoke to, we were sold. I also love that Spartan provides guaranteed prices and they stuck to their word. We had Spartan do a full pack so they arrived on time with a five man crew (Elmer, Sergio, Tony, Jordy and Enrique) and all of the packing supplies they would need. They were friendly and efficient and had our 2Bd/2Ba apartment packed and loaded 8 hours later without us lifting a finger. It was amazing! The foreman Elmer was a great leader and provided exceptional customer service. We were also happy that the company was able to provide an over-sized, custom-built wooden crate for one of our most fragile items and an additional month of storage at very reasonable rates (up to one month of storage was included with our move). According to plan, our items arrived in the Denver area about two months later and the unloading crew was just as impressive: efficient, strong, helpful and all-around pros. My only feedback for improvement would be regarding the delivery communication. For the most part it was fine and we were happy to receive our items about 1 week into the 3 week delivery window. However we were told multiple times that the company would call us to do a final-final confirmation before loading any of our items onto the truck, but in the rush to get our things on the next available truck we didn't actually hear from Spartan until our things were already on the road. Luckily this wasn't a problem for us (and to be fair we had pre-confirmed that we wanted our stuff asap), but It could have been a big deal if our lease or availability on this end had changed at all. Bottom line: plan to be as available as possible during your delivery window. I'm so glad we chose Spartan on the recommendation of a friend. read more

I had a great experience moving from California to Massachusetts with Spartan! It was hard to find a mover I trusted at a reasonable price, but Spartan was just what I was looking for. The prices, although not the cheapest option out there, were reasonable. And I really appreciated how transparent and upfront they were about every cost. I had the WORST experience with this company. Take my advice AND USE SOMEONE ELSE. The moving company and the drivers do not communicate and everyone in the office tells you something different. Due to that, I did not receive my shipment until 3 weeks from the pick up date. Susan K in particular from the office was horrible to deal with. She always had an attitude when I called and often raised her voice, not showing any empathy for a customer who just wanted to get his shipment. Once I finally received my shipment, my bed frame was completely broken. While having to wait for my furniture was tough, dealing with the people who work here was the worst part of it all. Hidden fees and a staff that is truly the worst I have ever dealt with in my life. read more

We moved from California to Washington and we booked them for their services. The people who came to pack in California were excellent and professional. They did everything very nicely. In between the complete transition they were updating us about the location of stuff and the date of arrival. Then the people who came to help in Washington were ok not that trained but they were trying hard to make it perfect. We did had some damages but their staff helped us with the claims and all . They also have some sketchy policies- requiring a deposit, then pay half up front and half at delivery- but more than anything, they never gave me a quote, and never responded to emails or phone calls. These guys were absolutely amazing! This was a complicated move as we were relocating and consolidating two residences into a shipping container to go overseas. They helped us to quickly pack furniture at one address and then move it to the other so it could be loaded altogether into the container. Yael, who packed the container was an absolute miracle worker. He managed to fit everything we seriously probably 5 inches to spare! We were certain we were going to have to leave things behind, but he managed to help us leave with everything! I couldn't recommend them highly enough, and the price for this service was well worth being able to take all of our belongings with us + not having to pay the price for the larger container that would have been an extra $2500 and way too big. read more

I won't recommend this company. I went through very tough time from pickup day until delivery. 1. The pickup process was a nightmare, the people came for pick were very rude. They always come with a mindset to charge you extra then what has been quoted and negotiated. 2. Delivery was delayed, had no clue where my things were and had to follow-up with multiple people to get the status and ETA. 3. Delivery was completely messed, all the household things were broken and a lot of damage in major furniture, and their claim process is not good. I would suggest shipping on our own instead of going with Spartan. 4. The delivery people were not friendly they haven't given us time to check the damage as well. If you planning to go with this movers, then plan for 50% more shipping cost than what they have quoted. read more

Spartan was the worst moving experience of my life. They missed their delivery date by three weeks with no explanation. When the goods arrived, most every zip-tied tub was delivered already opened (by cutting off the ties) and then gone through. Several items of values were removed from many tubs. The person who delivered the items threatened to drop all my things off the truck outside the storage facility where the delivery was contracted. He also claimed that he didn't work for Spartan, and he didn't give a f*** what happened to my things. He gave me an ultimatum to get a truck and then move my own things. That not caring part was obvious from the amount of theft and broken items he delivered. A Gaggia Classic Espresso Machine was just not delivered. Don't ever trust Spartan to deliver anything. Customer Service is essentially non-existent. They are thieves, liars, and charlatans. Your mileage could vary but be wary. read more

These guys were great from start to finish! They were honest with me about all the fine print on josh's first visit to do a home estimate, which was free. They don't hard sell. They then proceeded to advise me on the move and alert me to every single detail of insurance, storage, payment, etc in the process with clarity and friendliness. They moved all my stuff with care, and reassembled it perfectly through their cross county counterpart contracted movers. I couldn't have asked for ANY BETTER SERVICE! Warning, no matter how small your move is make sure you purchase your own insurance and not just use the insurance that comes with move. The guy who did my initial walk through of how much I needed moved was great. The problem is that I only had a bed set to move and somehow the movers managed to scrape it on the foot board and the head board. It looked like it had been dropped extremely hard which caused it to not only scrape but chip. I really like my bed set which is why I sold everything else I owned due to me moving long distance and just kept my bed set. It cost me alot of money so it was definitely coming with me from California to Texas. They lady over the insurance claims department with Spartan was really nice and swiftly handled my claim with no problems. So I give them three stars for atleast getting my things to me. Side note* the guy over dispatch was really rude to me every time that I called. He intially called me first about 3 days after picking up my things to let me know that my things would arrive within 3-4 days but it actually took about 10 days. I kept calling dispatch to find out an actual time and date that the guy would arrive but the dispatch guy just rudely kept telling me that he doesn't know and that I would receive a call from the driver the day before it would arrive. All he had to do was get in contact with the driver to find out a time and date but I guess that was too much to ask. I needed to get know ahead of time so that I could take off from work, but instead I had to basically just take off for the entire week since he wouldnt take the time to do his job and find out for me. I would definitely use this company again based on price wise but just made sure I got insurance and had a few days available to spare from going to work. read more

Kept us awake till midnight because he could not find hardware box. Stacked the boxes in the rooms before setting up furniture. Did not complete assembling basketball. Sent one man to setup furniture. I had to help him find the parts, and assemble. Customer care team was like lawyers who are champion of fine print and shirking responsibility. They were great! It only took 8 days to go from California to North Carolina with our belongings which is pretty incredible. The moving crew were very organized, super polite, and moved all of our stuff in within a few hours (and it was super hot outside!). I only had to coordinate with one person in setting up my move -- although she no longer works with the company, she was awesome -- and in the days leading up to my move the driver was in contact and on his game. Three young guys moved me out and three new folks moved me in to my new apartment, all of them were quick and courteous. My stuff came across country in one week! When I was missing three boxes, the NY team was quick to respond and got the items to me in a week. I also had minor damage claims that were resolved promptly. I would definitely recommend these guys, but am disappointed to learn that they no longer do pick-ups outside the Bay Area. read more

This company is professional, communicative, and thorough. I chose them because they were the only company that I could find with consistently positive reviews for the most part, this industry is scary with most companies having lots of horror stories (good reviews with local moves, but bad reviews with large moves like mine going from CA to PA). Like most moving companies, the hard part is that they give you the 7-14 day window which means that you may be without anything at your new place for a while (if you are moving somewhere with noone to accept items for you). But anyways, the insist on seeing your inventory so that they can record it, while you may think that this is just an extra step while you are horribly busy with moving tasks, the cool thing is that they will guarantee you a price after doing this inv check. I've read that most other companies will take a general inventory over the phone, give you an estimate, but then jack up the price upon pick-up day if it ends up being more than they imagined during your call. I was given a price when showing the rep my stuff, and that price stuck. They then gave me plenty of reminders about pickup day, and then plenty of reminders about estimated delivery days and times. It was nice to have that info for planning sake. Everyone was friendly from the initial call, pickup, and delivery. They were quick, but wrapped every item in blankets as to insure that everything would be protected. They recommended an insurance company should you need to cover your goods (I declined since they offer a small amount of coverage for free on each item automatically and I had nothing too expensive), and also a company to move vehicles (All American Trucking and Transport ((650)777-0933) which also had great reviews among most other companies listed very negatively. I needed to move a vehicle since we were flying so I used them, and my experience with them was great as well. A solid company, good at what they do, slightly more expensive than other quotes I received, but in the same ball park and worth it due to giving so much more peace of mind during the process. Yelp 3-Stars = A-OK. They're definitely not 5 stars as most of the reviews lead you to believe. I moved from Campbell CA to Portland OR towards the end of June 2016 and I think the move was just about average. 1. Communication was poor/non-existent I called the company to let them know that I need advance notice in order to get a city permit for the semi to park outside my building. They made a note of it and said this was possible because Portland isn't too far away. I never heard from anyone and then the driver calls me a day before delivery. No way I can get a city permit in a day so I paid $275 in cash for them to bring the shuttle truck. I'm inclined to believe that the driver is incentivized to do this because he can probably get a shuttle truck for cheap (so extra money in his pocket). 2. Like paying for wifi at a nice hotel I had them park the shuttle truck, in my garage, near the doors that lead into the building. The driver then proceeded to measure the distance from the truck, through the building, up the elevator, and to my front door. He then informed me that I had to pay $70 in "long carry". To be clear, there were no stairs - just flat ground, an elevator ride, and more flat ground. Again, this money goes into the driver's pocket (he doesn't share this with the help). Why not just roll this charge into the initial quote? Definitely feels like I'm being nickle and dimed. No back-breaking work (unless you don't want to use a dolly). Most of helpers used dollies. There was one interesting fellow who had been digging a ditch earlier (yes, he said this to me) and then single handedly *carried* my couch from the truck to my apartment. I'm writing this review from my apartment, and not from the ditch. 3. Some broken stuff I noticed that things I had labeled "fragile" were not treated differently - nice to see that equality exists somewhere, even if it's the back of a shuttle truck. Everything looked as if it were in there for the sole reason of filling up space. Boxes were stacked everywhere, and in every orientation. Lucky for me, I'd packed my fragile things in small U-Haul boxes, and then packed those small boxes in medium boxes, filling the empty space with packing peanuts. The stuff I packed survived. However, the things that the movers packed - shelves, tables, box springs, etc - took some damage in the form of broken/bent legs, ripped fabric, and table tops that buckled under heavy load. 4. Claims In order to receive compensation, in the amount of $150, I need to sign the following (pasted here from the email I received): "I agree not to file a claim, complaint, post or take action including any State, Federal, Government, Insurance, Subrogation, Consumer, Public, Media, Internet, Arbitration or Credit Card Agency, or if already filed, remove said claim, complaint, post or action, within one week of acceptance of this agreement." So, fuck that. Keep your $150 and I'll say what I want. 5. Quote was higher than other offers My stuff: - 9 small U-Haul boxes - 9 medium U-Haul boxes - 2 grand wardrobe U-Haul boxes - sofa (2 seater) - queen mattress and box springs - 8 Ikea small/medium shelving units: 3 Gnedby, 3 Kallax (1x4 style), 2 Laiva - bicycle, desk**, nightstands, and a few other small things What I ended up paying: Quote: $1899 (they accept cash, money order, or cashiers check. 50% up front, rest on delivery. Credit card payments incur a fee) Shuttle truck: $275 Long carry: $70 Tips: extra (pickup + delivery) Total: $2244 + tips I didn't get a receipt for the shuttle truck and the long carry. I forgot to ask and the driver never bothered. Quotes from other companies were as low as $1400, and I might have seen one even lower. However, I picked Spartan because of the 5 star Yelp reviews, and the nice photos with the movers wearing those red shirts - though I don't recall a single person on my move wearing the Spartan shirt. Next time, I might go with a cheaper quote and expect to pay higher tips for better service (as an example: $1400 + $600 tips would still work out less than what I paid here). I wanted to save money by not having the moving company pack my stuff. Also, I skipped getting moving insurance because they won't cover the cost of the insured item if you pack it yourself (I think it was a maximum of $250, with a $250 deductable. WHAT!?). read more

Gabrielle's team did a good job with my Gold Service move within Menlo Park (pack, load, transport, unload, unpack). They were on time and followed through with the price and refund they said they would give me. Their policy requires an estimate which they overshoot to be safe but I just had them stop when I was satisfied. In hind-sight I should have just told them I wasn't going to have them go past a certain number of hours either way. The star off is partly for Gabrielle not following my verbal instructions to wrap something before loading it. I think the in-town move made them feel like they didn't have to wrap things carefully which they didn't. The rest of the star is off because the refund took a month. I do appreciate that they honored the price stated despite some supposed GPS evidence otherwise. I would consider using them again but if there's something in particular you want wrapped do it yourself or stand there while they do it. You should also get your own boxes from Home Depot or something since they overcharge for those. It was 5 large boxes and 2 extra large boxes for $50. They weren't anything special like Debbie tried to make it sound. read more

Mercedes was awesome, professional, courteous, and timely! She made sure everything happened as it should have, and was very informative of the process! They locally moved me in about 9 hours, taking extra care in packing the disorganized "stuff" in my little home, moving me to an even smaller home. Chava and his team were awesome. One member of his team didn't stop smiling, even while pushing the sofa out the door (well not literally pushing, but he was working pretty hard)!! I couldn't believe their more than affordable rates for all the work they did!! Based on an hourly rate, they do run a tad higher than competition, BUT, don't let those rates of the competition fool you! There are other costs they would charge, but Spartan rolled it all in, making it very simple and easy to understand. I do believe they have different packages you can go with depending on your needs, but I had the highest package and still paid a FRACTION of the competition! If you're moving locally, choose Spartan!! One week later: There was a HUGE hassle that came up with payments and refunds that were most unsatisfactory, not because the company messed up, but because the person who usually handles this area was on medical leave and someone else was trying to figure it out. The situation was a bit messy, BUT!!! The issue that I had, I believe, was a one-time thing and would not be something that would come up very often with someone else. It was unique to my situation and the general timing of it all. Don't let it deter you from using these guys! PLEASE KEEP READING.... Two days ago: I got a call from Mercedes who said to me that she would make sure everything was handled correctly. I don't think anyone could expect better. Getting a quote was straightforward. There was no sales pressure afterwards as we were trying to figure out the dates. We scheduled the pick up the date and time we wanted, which was within less than a week from calling them. They came in as promised and they were very quick and efficient. They delivered within hours of when they promised. Again, unloading and setup was fast and efficient. And communications was excellent throughout all this time. Although the packing and unpacking were professional, the service overall is not good. All of our cardboard boxes, without exception were damaged beyond re-use. I packed our goods in very strong and expensive stackable 'DATA-PAK' Bankers Boxes. I also used very strong plastic boxes and some of these were also damaged beyond use. I have photos to prove this. I can only assume irresponsible handling of the goods during storage/swap from one van into another and a rough journey from CA to AZ. I'm sure of this last claim,. because when I looked into the van before unloading in front of our house in AZ, I could see some of the boxes upside-down and others flipped over. I will not use this company and will not recommend it to others. read more

Be sure to have water on hand to take care of these awesome guys. They worked their bum off! If you schedule with them, be sure to have your phone available the day before the move. They will call to confirm and address any last minute details. We are extremely pleased with the process and how well our belonging were taken care of. We packed our own possessions, so I can't comment on a complete move. They do wrap furniture. They added an extra layer of protection to the glass sides of our bookcases. We waited a few days before posting on Yelp so we could unpack. I can say this is the first time we have moved when there wasn't anything broken!
