Impromptu dinner here. Good tasty food. We had the fried calamari which was a tad bit oily but cooked perfectly. They were definitely deep fried. We also had the salmon egg roll (happy hour special) which was good, you can tell they used good salmon but I wasn't blown away by the taste, again deep fried. We had some happy hour drinks - the Thai Breeze which was just okay, but we really loved the Spicy Tamarind and kept ordering that. Our entrees were the Volcanic Chicken which was moist, delicious and very flavorful. Also had the Shrimp Prik Khing which was the right amount spicy and flavorful. (This usually comes with Pork belly but They were kind enough to swap the pork for shrimp$ I did find the portion size for the prik khing to be on the small size. Overall it was great. My friend recommended this place for happy hour. As I waited for her and sat at the small bar they have. I cant remember the same of the drink but it was fruity and good and for the price in nyc it was fantastic. The restaurant itself this night was not crowded which was great. Once my friend got there we sat down at a table. The restaurant is small and clean. I ordered the crab wontons. Very tasty and a good amount of crab and cream cheese. Next I had the fried rice with chicken. I'm not used to my rice coming out so light so I was nervous about the flavor. It did not disappoint. It was very flavorful. Located where the famous Monsoon restaurant used to be, Spice has come to the UWS. It's so new that it has yet to be featured on its official "Spice" website (perhaps they're waiting to see if it takes off?). Let me please say that I am REALLY, REALLY excited to have another Thai restaurant in the 'hood, especially since its closest neighbor, Land Thai, is as small as my bathroom and usually has a long line (unlike my bathroom, yay!). I am a huge pad thai fan. I crave it constantly. I've been here twice. It's not the best Thai food I've ever had, and the ambiance is unremarkable, but the service is great and the food is good. If you DON'T make a beeline for the pad thai, try the steamed vegetable dumplings, fresh summer rolls, black noodles (broad rice noodles, egg, & broccoli in a black bean sauce), and definitely have one of the "specials" - which is apparently code for non-noodle main course. My friend and I split a noodle dish and a whole fish - head included. Although I didn't partake in consuming said head, I still had to eat with my eyes averted because I felt like it was staring at me. It was a crispy red snapper in tamarind sauce, and it was delicious. FYI - an order of noodles plus a special is more than enough to feed 2 people. Welcome, Spice! Please stay open! read more

Last week, after a graduation party in the area, we stopped in here to have dinner. My friend was visiting from out-of-town and we just wanted something simple and good. This place was able to deliver both. At around 9pm on a Wednesday evening, the place was full and there were only a few empty tables left. We were seated immediately. The menu has some good vegetarian options. I liked that this restaurant had large photos of Thailand on the wall. If that is what Thailand looks like, we are definitely going there! My friend and I already have a rendezvous schedule in Petra, Jordan. We ordered a basil eggplant and also a mock duck (seitan) dish. Both dishes were good, but I would have to say the mock duck was by far the superior dish. We were able to talk and catch up even long after we finished our meal. The staff were helpful but not intrusive. Funny, that we didn't even realize what time it was before soon they were about to shut down! I have been known to shut down a few other places. Spice is usually not a bad place to go to for Thai food, but this location was not on their A game. We started off with appetizers which included dumplings and the "chef's special beef skewers". Dumplings were great, but the beef skewers were overcooked, dry and grainy, but they did make the effort to take it off our bill. Service was horrible...took about 40 minutes to get our food for whatever reason. We asked what was going on with our order and they said there was a large party ahead of us. That party was a group of 8 people which this restaurant should be able to handle with no issue. Funny thing is that they got our food out to us before that large party. I think one of the guys there or management went back into the kitchen to crack the whip on getting the food out. Overall it was average...I would recommend Thai Market which is in UWS. Bonding with a bunch of girlfriends over phad thai while discussing the nasty effects of diet pills, belly dancing, and freaks on craigslist = the start of an awesome afternoon! :P Thanks to Spice for their awesome lunch special, putting up with our raucous girly laughter, and letting us get separate checks, which I usually try to request to preclude the inevitable confusion of who-ordered-what, how-do-we-divide-the-tip-and-tax, and wait-why-are-we-still-short mess. Our waitress was kind enough to give us enough time to mull over the menu, and I decided on the steamed dumplings for an appetizer, which had chicken and shrimp with black bean vinegar poured over them. They were tasty enough to be enjoyable, but not wow-able. Then came beef phad thai... what a perfectly-sized portion. Although it wasn't worthy of any gourmet awards, it was filling and satisfying. I tried my friend's grilled lemongrass chicken, which looked like perfectly charred roast chicken straight from the grill. I've been to various Spice locations in the city over the years (wrote a review of the one in Brooklyn a while back). When I dine in, the food is good. I've gotten some food delivered from the UWS location and would usually say that certain dishes are delicious and stand up to delivery. Yet, I'm also of the school of thought that if you offer delivery, your food should stand up to it -- or you should create a delivery menu for the offerings that do. The other night, I ordered the chicken satay; the flavor of the marinade for the chicken was delicious; the peanut sauce was delicious. The chicken, however, was undercooked -- which is, to me, unforgivable. I had to throw out half of it. We also had the thai ribs; I agree with a previous reviewer that they were almost flavorless. Balancing the meat with some veggies, I ordered a side of steamed vegetables with "Thai dipping sauce." The dipping sauce was a bitter soy sauce-based dip, and the vegetables were so mushy by the time delivery happened, that I had to pitch both. I've tried -- and now I'm done. There are other Thai places in the neighborhood I plan to try; I'm done with Spice. read more

American Thai food. and I emphasize AMERICAN. We went there for lunch at around 12:45 p.m. It's a small place with a nice interior. The bar area only had about 4 - 5 chairs. There weren't many people on this Sunday Afternoon so we were seated promptly. Generally, Everything taste OK... It is Thai food but it doesn't have anything that makes it stand out from any other place. It is OK though, So I would discourage you from coming here... I had the Eggplant beef on the lunch special. The lunch special includes and appetizer (about 4 pieces) and entree choice and rice. There was alot of beef but I just wish there was more eggplant. I was very wary of dining at a chain Thai restaurant. I've only had thai food once in NYC and it was ok. I was very happy with my experience here. If you are dining here, go for their lunch menu! You save so much money! Free appetizer with an entree. I got their lunch deal with another appetizer and we each had a thai iced tea. Crab Ragoon! So good, I ordered delivery from then later on and ordered 2 of them! It has cream cheese but it is not overwhelmed with it like other places. Their sirracha creamy sauce is yummy. I am usually wary of fusion restaurants, mainly because they tend not to be able to do any cuisine very well. But it ended up not even really mattering what cuisine we were eating because everything we got was DELICIOUS. My friend and I split the spicy calamari, which were fried just right, not overcooked. And the batter had an amazing peppery flavoring that was so good, and even better with the mint-tomato dipping sauce it came with. My friend got the steamed sea bass as his entree. Both of us are of Chinese descent and we grew up with our parents' home cooking, which included steamed sea bass. The dish at Spice was EXACTLY like we had had at home -- steamed just enough to retain the tender quality of the fish, lots of ginger, green onion, green vegetables, soy sauce, and a little bit of oil. One of the best pieces of fish I've ever tasted in a restaurant. And one of very few times I've been so strongly reminded of home. My dish was the Golden Curry Noodle, which the description said was a yellow curry, but it was more like a red curry in flavor. The difference between Spice and the other Thai joints is the service... And that's because you'll be served better at the others. This was a go to place in the past. I especially love the one in union square. This location did not have the same ambiance with their outdated tiles. It also was slower service than normal spice experiences. The thai iced tea was made with too much sweet condensing milk. The pad thai was very disappointing as well. Did not have much flavor and had too much fish sauce. The spring rolls were average. We also got the vegan flat noodles. This was actually surprisingly the best dish we had. It didn't taste fishy but it did lack spiciness. The side hot sauce did pair well with it. If you have the option, choose the union square location. read more

A really solid UWS lunch spot for me. Under $10 gets you an app and a perfectly portioned entree and the food has been really yummy so far. It's also cute inside and the servers always keep a watchful eye on their tables. I've tried the veggie dumplings and the green salad, the cashew chicken and the pad thai. Not a single one disappointed, but I was most surprised by the cashew chicken - really great flavor and tons of crisp veggies. I went to Spice for the first time today after hearing pretty good things about it. I got an order of summer rolls and the Massaman Curry "homestyle" (which means it came with a whole chicken thigh on the bone). The summer rolls weren't anything to write home about, had fewer vegetables in them than summer rolls you can get at other thai and vietnamese restaurants (literally only lettuce and carrots) but the sauce was really good. The curry however, was AWESOME. I love massaman, and I think theirs was spot on. Not too overwhelmingly spicy, but still enough of a kick. The place also has a pretty impressive drink menu. The reason I give it 3 stars instead of 4 is because I don't think there's anything particularly special or unique about this place. The service was also lacking. It took a while to get our food and the check, and most of the staff was eating in the back room while we were there. read more

My best friend put me on to Spice many moons ago. Since then, I have eaten at every location. It is by far my favorite Thai spot. I have eaten at over a dozen different Thai restaurants and they have never satisfied my palate like Spice. The service is great. Everyone is very nice. Waiters and hostess/host are very attentive. What we pay for an entire meal equates to one dish at many of the restaurants we frequent. The pricing is so low that my wife and I order 3 appetizers and 2 entrees every time we go. We always start with the Fried Calamari, Golden Fritters and Curry Puffs. The accompanying sauces are very delightful as well. We love Spice! read more

Walking down Amsterdam St, it is difficult to choose from the many cute restaurants all with outdoor seating and probably good food. But Spice caught our eye because of their happy hour cocktails and I'm glad it did. While I'm not sure if I would return here for a full dinner, my friend and I split 3 appetizers and had a couple happy hour cocktails. We each only spent $20+tip so that in itself was great. The appetizers were all really good and flavorful. We had chicken wings that were pretty typical but had some nice extra spice, pad thai rolls which were tasty and were similar to a spring roll but had a lot of sauce, and my favorite was the Andaman dumplings. The appetizers ranged from $6-9 each. The happy hour drinks were great deals. They had a "prosecco float" for $5 which was basically just prosecco with some elderflower flavor but good nonetheless. We also got the "Thai Breeze" drink that came in a tall and pretty glass and was rum and fruit flavors. It was a nice flavor without being too sweet and was only $6. I wasn't expecting too much from a first-time, hastily-ordered delivery meal, but truly Spice surprised me. The crispy spring rolls were indeed crispy, the Naboo steamed dumplings were plump and tender and the Kao Pao Moo Sub was a excellent blend of minced pork, basil, peppers, egg, onion and rice. All so good I couldn't resist coming back a few days later for another few dishes to tuck away for a later day's treat. Ah, but what a difference those few days made. No appetizers this time, I ordered two entrees only, both from the menu section marked "Over Rice." Neither came served over rice, however, but with the rice packed separately. As were the son-in-law eggs, here sliced in half and packaged separately as well, unlike the previously integrated and intact elements of the dish. The two entrees were each swimming, not in sauce, but in fat. Just a very disappointing follow up to what had promised to be a delightful staple of my Thai favorites. We all know Spice, I think they have had at least 20 locations in NYC at one point like 10 years ago. We have been to all of them over the years, and watched many of them close too.. always good (will swap out cheap for affordable) because funny enough, the food is never really bad at any location. We have gone to this location at least 5 times in the past 3 months. Never bad, always decent fast and they are so polite. If you get tired of walking around and listening to all the seals barking at Jacobs pickles for a ridiculous meal and just want to sit down and be treated nicely and not break the bank- go here. I've only ordered this for pick up when I don't feel like cooking, so I don't know the entire sit-down experience. I will say that their curry is deliciously creamy, and it comes with rice that is fluffy and light, just how I like it. The only downside is that their portions are so small that it doesn't feel like it's worth the money. I've heard that their sit-down experience is quite bad, with slow (and sometimes rude?) service, but don't take my word for it since I have never tried it. I would probably not go to Spice for a sit-down meal since there are so many other Thai restaurants that I like with better food and better pricing. However, the convenience of their pick-up orders is unbeatable if you happen to live close by and want a decent meal. read more
