I have been going to Spice for about 15 years, but they must be under some new management. I placed and order for pickup, and when I got home, I discovered that I was given the wrong order. I called to see if they could exchange the bags, and they proceeded to scream at me saying it was my fault. How can it be my fault? It is the responsibility of the restaurant to give the correct order to the correct customer. They not only refused to deliver the correct order (I live on the UWS), but when I tried to explain that this was indeed their fault and they should do the right thing by delivering me my order, they hung up on me. The water chased us just to tell us that we didn't left enough tip and that we should leave tip from both credit cards. I like this location better than the one around 14th st. Quieter, less clubby more peaceful. Food is just like the other branches. My friend got the pork chop, pretty good portion and tasted good. I got the bangkok fish red curry. I love it but I wish the fish comes in bigger portion. But other than that, it tasted good. I would order it again though. Service, hm.. it's better than the other place too BUT one of the waiters wasn't friendly at all. Run of the mill Thai food with generous portions, and good selection of vegan options. The ambiance is relaxing and the prices are reasonable, but for me the food was just okay. I had the Spring Rolls as an appetizer-greasy and flavorless, however the sesame sauce that they came with was very tasty. My main course, the Pattaya Noodle, was incredibly oily, and had little flavor. It required a lot of hot sauce to be palatable. Sort of ironic for a restaurant called "Spice". The noodles and tofu were both slightly undercooked. My friends all ordered various vegan dishes and really enjoyed them, so perhaps I just ordered the wrong dish. This is kinda like the Pei Wei of Thai food. Pretty solid dishes at very reasonable prices. Pad Thai and drunken noodles are very good, good spice (no pun intended ) to the dishes as well. They deliver to a decent size area in the upper west side,so it's a good cheap option if you aren't up for the trek over to the restaurant itself. Apps are a little pricey so I usually just stick to the main courses. Definitely do not expect anything "authentic" here, but for those times when you are in the mood for some solid American-Thai food at a reasonable price, Spice is not a bad pick! read more

A decent joint, with good service. It is now a bit of a chain as there are so many locations. I used to enjoy the one on university so my fiancé and I have come to this one several times as it is near our church. I have to say their food just isn't on par and it is a bit diluted in flavor. Their Phad Thai is watery and their spring rolls were not packed. It just isn't great Thai food in general, but if you are hungry and you like a nice place with edible food, for not too many dollars, this place will do. Nothing was bad, but nothing was great. I have to say my favorite thing here is just their Tom yum soup. They layer the flavors properly and I found it satisfying. All in all, this isn't a bad pick if you are just hungry and need a quick fix. The portions are generous and the food comes pretty fast. VEGANS BEWARE! I was happy to see that there is a 100% vegan section on the menu, but something told me I'd better ask. Sure enough, the "vegetarian" basil mock duck contains fish sauce. I was slightly ashamed to be eating here, not gonna lie. I wanted to go to Land, but they were closed at 2:30pm...oddly. Anyway, we really wanted thai, and this was across the street. I've made a point of never going to any Spice, because I just don't usually like chains and this is pretty close to a chain restaurant. I've also never really heard any raves, but then again, how hard is it to mess up pad thai? My date and I were given lunch menus, which had well-priced specials (pretty sure they were all under $10, some around $7 or $8). I love that the app section is labeled "appertizers"...a cute typo, if ever there was one. For apps, I went with the veggie dumplings and my date had the regular dumplings (meat). My dumplings were decent, but the best part was the sauce, a plum sauce I think. I could have had a whole bowl of this! My date said his dumplings were just "meh". The entrees we got were both noodle dishes. I saw they had two different options for pad thai, one of which involved "unnoodles", whatever the hell that means. I went with the regular pad thai, since someone next to us ordered it and it was gorgeous. It was really tasty-sweet, but not overly so, and just a little bit spicy. I got it with vegetables and they agreed not to put bell peppers in, yay! My date's noodles were basically a version of pad see ew, with wide flat noodles in a dark, sweet sauce. It was SO GOOD!!! I kept stealing bites. It was a nice balance, so I recommend splitting these two entrees. I also ordered a chrysanthemum tea, which came in a really cool teapot with stone cups. It was $4, but it came with a whole teapot full! It wasn't really that good, but it was nice having hot tea on a chilly day. Overall, this place was way better than I expected. This place DEFINITELY DOES NOT have many vegetarian or vegan options! Don't be fooled by the menu. As a vegetarian, I asked if any dishes had oyster sauce and the server said that no dishes do in the vegetarian section of the menu. However, after I ordered, I was told that it does have oyster sauce. I ordered something off the VEGAN menu, and the dish had oyster sauce in it too! That means it is NOT VEGAN. They are reasonably priced from 9-11 dollars depending on the protein, and come with an appetizer. Portions are large and food is very flavorful. We had pineapple fried rice, vegetarian dumplings, tom yum soup (spicy but delicious), and spice basil. - Typical thai food with nothing that really stands out as exceptional. Gripes: - If you're with kids, I'd say come here to just make the staff understand that this is the UWS, there are a lot of kids here, and for lunch, we can make as much noise as we want. - We were initially seated in the back room, near the restrooms, and all the area smelled like was dirty bathroom. This was only because we had two 1 year old babies in strollers with us. Did I mention the whole outside main seating area was pretty much empty? Not cool. - We moved ourselves to the main dining room, where we were not helped in moving furniture to position our strollers near is. We did that ourselves while they watched us. (THEY DONT HAVE HIGH CHAIRS) - We were told a few times to keep our babies quiet, as they were too loud and the hostess couldn't hear herself on the phone. 1. our babies weren't crying they were laughing 2. she wasn't on the phone. We weren't even that loud - people could have conversations - I mean its NYC and dinnertimes get so loud with chatter that you can barely hear the person next to you. You kinda can't go wrong with this place. For about $7-$10, you have plenty of choices for lunch. Their lunch specials include an appetizer so you get a lot of food. Portions are plenty. I always get the broad noodles with chicken with their signature shrimp fritters. This is my go-to after trying everything else. You can't go wrong with the other options, though. What I like about Spice is that they have thought about the other details including ambience, service ware, and service. Our server wrote down her name on a post-it and put it on our table at the beginning so we don't forget it. Certainly different but memorable. This location is geared towards delivery orders as the place doesn't have that many tables/seats. They're pretty efficient so it won't take long for you to get a table. read more

Sorry, not sorry, everytime I make a new friend, I use it as an excuse to go to Spice. I love this place. This location specifically. I have dinned in, delivered, and done take out, and they have yet to judge me. I was walking my bulldog (three blocks to it) and it took me like 20 minutes, a few minutes after the place closed. Of all the cities I've ever lived, NYC has the worst Thai food, bar none. It's our curse. Spice is a *slight* cut above the rest. Maybe the best thing I can say about this Thai food is this: it doesn't taste like Chinese food! There isn't that wok peanut-oil sheen/aroma to all the food. That's a start, but they have a long, long way to go for this to be _good_ Thai food. The best Thai food in NYC is the Thai food that I make, but for most of you, that simply isn't an option unless we become friends. :) Thai Spare Ribs: C+ Dreadful. The ribs were the meaty variety. Very little fat, and hence, very little flavor. The bulk of the flavor came from the sauce which was entirely too sweet. I was hoping for a real Thai sauce, which should have overtones of nam pla. Alas, this tasted like Saucy Susan. Duck sauce. Lemongrass Tom Yum: B I'm giving this a "B" rating in comparison to other NYC Thai restaurants. Stacked up against Thai food from Tokyo, San Francisco, Washington DC it would be more like a C. It had the lemon overtones, but not nearly enough. I didn't see any lemon grass stalks; not a good sign. Maybe I detected a slight fish undercurrent, but it was nearly undetectable. I like my tom yum like I like tom yum: fishy, lemony, and spicy. Coconut Galanga Tom Kha: B Same as above; a "B" in comparison to its peer NYC Thai counterparts. It wasn't flavorful or aromatic enough. Still, it was better than its peers. It still had button mushrooms. Sigh... Spicy Crispy Pork Belly: B Bits of pork belly in a bed of a leafy green which I couldn't place. Maybe swiss chard, maybe bok choy greens. Not sure. The bits of pork belly were small and hardly crispy, but they were plentiful. The sauce was salty but worked with the dish. It was a decent dish, but I wouldn't order it again. Red Curry: B You know, I really didn't taste much red curry paste. Yeah, it was kinda sorta spicy. Kinda sorta. Would've preferred it much hotter. Yeah, it was good. But it didn't have that lemony soapy flavor that kaffir lime leaves impart to a dish. Still, it's definitely a cut above its NYC peers. In short, I'm still on a quest for good Thai food in NYC. It's a humble small-sized restaurant on the upper west side. Small and packed. Noise level is pretty high which is usual for most places in the city. We waited for 5 mins to get a table -which wasn't too bad. They have a few 100% vegan menu items. That's a huge plus!... The food is absolutely delicious! One of the best Thai food I ever had. Came here for a birthday dinner - with so many tasty Thai restaurants in the city, it's hard to for me to give a place 4-5 stars. The positives of this place: great service! We had a large group of 8, and even though we didn't have reservations, they were able to accommodate us quickly (even before the estimated 45 minutes). Our waitress was super sweet and friendly, and it was easy to order and share and everything with our group. The food was also reasonably priced and we were able to split the bill fairly easily. So with those positives - why not more stars? The food was good, but there wasn't really anything that stood out about the food itself. A lot of the appetizers seemed to be on the smaller side, and we got the calamari which looked the best to share. However, it was not the most memorable calamari I've had - kind of chewy and a little bit overly fried. My friend and I got pad thai and green curry to share - all tasty, but pretty standard, nothing too special! If you are getting dessert, the fried banana cheesecake dessert thing is pretty tasty and different :) If you want decent thai with good service and larger groups, this is a good option! read more

Really good food! The ambiance is simple, more of a quick lunch place than a Friday night dinner, but the food was excellent. We had the veggie spring rolls, which were crispy, slightly sweet and fresh, followed by the Bangkok Hot Red Fish Curry with Coconut. Yum. Perfection. Not too spicy. We split the molten chocolate cake - rich, moist, gooey and not too sweet. And cheap! A winner. The Good: This place is cheap The Bad: This place is cheap for a reason. The food sucks. Small glass shard in my salad to start off. Thai iced tea tasted like someone dumped a whole can of condensed milk in there. And to finish off the meal, the fried rice dish has SOME grains of rice in there that either tasted like it was undercooked or left out so long that it got hard. Which makes me think they must reuse their rice to make the fried rice dishes, otherwise you would think all the grains of rice would have the same texture. Gross. read more

Sat outside last night Basic order: Avacado Salad Pad Thai Jade Noodles extra spicy ( I like it Hot!) Avacado salad was good took 20 min to come 55 min later we are still waiting for our food and kind of confused why it took so long as to what we ordered was nothing special Finally it came out.. food was luke warm to cold... mine was at least edible, my friend's was just plain one big ball of dried up noodles ( how the hell can you mess up pad thai really).. we told the server which fyi was the hardest person to find and when we finally got her attention she just kind of gave us this blank stare.... So my friend spelled it out for her "I DO NOT WANT THIS" and she just kind of took the plate walked away... 15 min later we are looking for our server and our bill... bill is dropped off by some random person.. wasn't even our bill...literally flagged down someone who took another 10 min and brought us back the bill without the pad thai removed... and now its round three ladies and gentleman! Great place to eat, just a few blocks walk from Natural History Museum. The food is so spicy and delicious. Portions are larger too. My family had a great experience. I think the owners have another location downtown which is much nicer / cleaners inside. I will say this place is a tad untidy (not dirty) and the servers were not super friendly. It was accompanied by boiled veggies with a horrible sweet & sour sauce drizzled over them. I washed the veggies off in the leftover tom yum broth that wasn't worth finishing. I would like to start off my review by saying I'm a fan of Spice. I have been since I moved to NYC in 2011. It's just a shame when you have good food and mediocre service. I arrived at Spice during dinner with my mother - table for two, please. Oh wait, there's no one greeting or offering us one of the many empty, open tables. After a bit of waiting, ten minutes or so of awkwardly standing at the front register, someone finally took us to a table smack dab in the middle of the space. Mind you, the space isn't that big. We sat down. The person who sat us walked away... and never came back. We sat at our table with no menus, no water, nothing for about twenty minutes. We wanted to see if anyone would recognize the fact we hadn't been served. We were impossible to miss, like I said, we were in the middle of the restaurant. I finally called someone over and let them know we'd been waiting for a very long time and we finally got menus, ordered, our food (which was delicious, I always get the Pad Thai and a Thai Iced Tea), and left. Would've been nice to be given a complimentary appetizer or something. The reality is that I'll come back for the food, as this location is conveniently located in the Upper West Side, only a few stops away from my apartment, and the food is good. I love this place. It is pretty near where I work. I always been there for lunch and it is a great place for lunch. They have a really nice lunch special menu. I went there for lunch and I also call out delivery from them when I don't have time to head out during lunch. Food - I order the lunch special pot stickers and chicken drunk man noodle. Besides the drunk man noodle being a little too oily, everything was great. My friend order the black noodle (it was a little too sweet for me) and he love it. Service - The staff there are really friendly and they are also super fast (dine in and delivery) with your order. This is a good place for causal lunch with coworker. They won't try to rush you out or anything so you can always take your time and enjoy the food. read more

A great experience! I and a few friends went here for dinner and had a great time. We sat outside and the outside space was well taken care of and closed-off enough from the street that we were able to have a nice meal. We ordered two appetizers together--crab rangoon and curry puffs. The crab rangoon was tasty, and the dipping sauce it was served with made it delicious. The curry puffs were good--a little disappointing. The sauce it was served with confused me a bit. I ordered the Basil Eggplant with tofu, which I was happy to see came with rice. I was expecting to have the tofu be deep fried, and it was actually a nice surprise to see it marinated/grilled/lightly fried. The spice level was good!! My friend got the Pad Thai (with chicken I think) and she had enough to take home. My other friend ordered a curry soup that came with rice noodles and fried crunchy noodles, and I have to say I was eyeing it the whole meal. Next time. Is there any way I can give this place 3.5 stars? If so I would do it. I come here a few times a year. Nice minimalistic decor. Service is friendly and quick, to the point that you might end up with an appetizer and a main course at the same time if you don't eat with decent speed. I went here twice so far and I loved it so much! Great service, the waiters are always very attentive. And the atomsphere is so relaxed and classy even their bathrooms get 5stars lol. I ordered the curried duck appetizer it was spicy but sweet at the same time with a vinagrette sauce very yummy! And I would also suggest that you go with a group of friends and everybody try each others plate because everything i have tried so far is delicious. and the prices are pretty reasonable also. Spice offers some good food at great prices. The lunch specials for $7.50-8.50 are great value, you get an appetizer and an entree. The most notable thing about Spice's food is that the veggies are plentiful and fresh. The space itself is not too large, but its a nice room. Would recommend both eating in and delivery, which is lighting fast btw. The Penang Curry is really good as are all of the dumpling appetizers and the spring rolls. The curry's are all very fresh tasting with many veggies which are cooked well, not overcooked to the point of mush. The noodle dishes are better for eating at the restaurant (as is the case with all thai places) because they stay fresher and less gummy. Definitely would recommend this place. I'm not such a fan of chain restaurants... and chain Thai leaves a bit to be desired. Seriously, I love a good hole in the wall where a chef is cooking his/her family recipes for the crowd. Spice is not that type of place. They have multiple locations and are all about getting you in and out as quickly as possible. I went for a friend's birthday to this new location, and although the decor is nice, it is anything but homey. This location is TINY. It's probably better for takeout. We made reservations for our large party in advance, but when we showed up, we had to wait about 15-20 mins in the freezing cold for our table. There is no inside waiting area b/c it's so small. We were told that we were waiting for the table in the separate room, which WAS pretty cool to get our own room. Well COLD is what we got. It was FREEZING inside... we actually had to ask them to turn up the heat... not sure if they did since we were chilly the whole time. So...we sat down in our own room, and realized that when it's busy, they push a table against the door to the bathroom in a vestibule, and walla! a small room for a private party of 8-10. It actually wasn't too bad, but it was so dark. And it was sort of funny that the handle for the unusable restroom was next to our table. Also, I think that's the only handicapped accessible bathroom b/c the others are downstairs, so tough luck if you need one while a party is in that room. There is barely enough room for the table in that room, so once you're in your seat, don't think about getting up! Anyway, the food was good... but nothing spectacular. My pad-se-ew was a bit overly sweet. It's usually my favorite, but this one wasn't the best. We did get vegetable dumplings that were awesome. Value-wise, you can't go wrong with Thai... but if you want something authentic, skip Spice on the UWS, or just get some takeout. read more

Though you'd assume chain restaurants are pretty much the same, this location isn't nearly as good as the larger one in Union Square. I can understand that they'd put the power staff at the busy location, but its still a bummer to get sticky, lukewarm pad thai. My experience has been a crapshoot here.
