I was finally in the area when they were open and got to order some food, so I picked up two items: Banh mi and Nam Khao. This place is pretty nice. This is an order and free seating. The service is pretty quick, and I really love the way the place looks. It was pretty easy to order. The price is on the higher side, but you do get a good amount. I got the ultimate platter, and even three of us could not finish it. The Platter had tons of different options. It was quite flavorful. The pork was crispy, so it was pretty good. You do get some sticky rice as well. The food is brought out to you, but you need to order at the cashier. It definitely gets super crowded during the lunch hour. We came in when it opened, and the place was super packed in about 30 minutes, so if you want seats, come early or after the rush. Overall you get a good amount of food. Definitely enough to feed at least two, depending on the order. It comes out quick as well, so you are not waiting long. read more

Extremely solid spot! I saw this place on Instagram the other day and has had it bookmarked ever since, until today. I ordered 6 items to try a little bit of everything; the ultimate bomb platter, the Lao Lao tum tum, Nam khao, sakoo yat sai, love is sweet trio, and the banh cuon. Ultimate bomb platter- Huge assortment of meats that included sausage, ham, eggs, what looked like pork rinds, jerky, and meat skewers. A papaya salad in the center, some cabbage, noodles, and purple sticky rice accompanied it. All the meats were super flavorful, my favorites were the skewered meats, the sticky rice, and the papaya salad. I opted for a spicy papaya salad and man, that thing had me breathing fire with every bite! The jerky was really well done as well, but it seemed really tough to bite into. However, flavor was there nonetheless. Lao Lao tum tum- papaya salad, delicious and very inviting to boost your appetite. Citrusy and crunchy at the same time. Nam khao- perfect with a little bit of lime, best when eaten within a lettuce. The rice was still crispy even after being in the container for 20 minutes. Delicious! Sakoo yat sai- tapioca dumpling filled with pork inside. This is my first time trying this dish and it definitely did not disappoint! Had a sticky, mochi like texture and the inside stuffing just hit home once you bite into it. The perfect blend between a slight sweetness mixed in with the savory. Banh cuon- Can never go wrong with banh cuon. It was nice and silky on the outside and the pork filling inside was delectable. Love is sweet trio- my favorite out of everything we got! It had khao nom koke, that was sticky and sweet, perfect for a after dinner/lunch dessert with tea, khao paard pandan custard, this literary melts in your mouth, as soon as it hits your tongue, just straight delicious sweetness from the heavens coats your palate. Lastly, steamed cassava with coconut and sesame seeds, similar texture to the pandan custard, my favorite of all. I've had a lot of Laotian 'aunties' and 'uncles' growing up. I've went to all the get togethers where you see everyone's mom/grandma getting down in the kitchen. Literally... they're all on low stools or criss-crossed prepping god knows what heaven sent in making Laos food. So with that, I've grown up with a big portion of my life eating authentic Laos food. I was VERY surprised to find a restaurant like this in concord. Not only do I love Asian street food, I like food establishments that stand out much different than the rest. Spicy Joi's is one of them. I stumbled across this place as I was getting delicious bakery from 85 next door. I was thinking "No way, something like that opened here??" (Positive mindset of course. I think the only other Laos spot I've been to was in Oakland and Stockton.) I told myself I needed to try it out and on one spontaneous day, one year later; "You know what? I'm craving some papaya salad. I haven't had any in yearssss." Unfortunately I didn't dine in because I was on break at work not too far away. But I for sure planned out what I was getting ahead of time a few days before. I was excited for this day to come. These are my honest thoughts on my orders: * Kua Mee Mao Drunken Noodle (4.5/5 stars) - has a nice charred basil-y aroma and flavor. Very similar to Thai pad see ew. The docked star is just my personal opinion but for these kind of noodles I typically get beef. There was only chicken, pork, & tofu. I got chicken in medium spice (I know how crazy spicy y'all Laos folks make your food. I had to get this spice level to know for next time lol!) Regardless, it was still very yummy and the noodles had a good texture to it while still clinging to the flavors. Would order again. * Tum Makhuong/Papaya salad (4.5/5 stars) - food tastes SO much better when you're craving it. Not only was the crunchiness from the papaya that I drenched in sauce satisfying, it's very rare to find that home made sauce. Honestly as good as the flavor was, I feel it was lacking the tiniest thing to make it 100% perfect. Maybe it's another personal opinion but seemed it could be a little saltier? Not salty but just a hint. Refreshing though. I used it as a dipping sauce and vermicelli would go amazing with this. * Pork belly (5/5 stars) - Even though I ordered to go, the pork belly was still crispy and not over cooked. Visually I liked that some pieces looked bigger but it's just smaller pieces stuck together and you can just tell they use that big ole kitchen knife to butcher it all up. This with rice would pair amazing. I wish they had added like a chili fish sauce with it. Still amazing either way. * Sticky rice (4/5 stars) - you cannot get Laos food and order regular steamed rice. No way. Sticky rice is the way to go. I for sure dipped this in my papaya sauce and ate with the pork belly no doubt. It just seemed a little less moist than what I expected it to be. Then again, it would probably have been different had I dined in. All-in-all this was a great meal. I didn't finish it only cause my co workers seemed to drool over my lunch and I had to be selfish and take the rest home to enjoy. ;) I would LOVE to come back and try the rest of their menu. So I've been following Spicy Joi (and a bunch of other restaurants) during the pandemic, because all I've been doing is trying out so many different places. Since it's a bit far for me, I was waiting for the right moment to order. I ordered online on my way to my sister's house for pick up. I most definitely had to get a platter, so I got the Ultimate Bomb Platter, and the weekend trio dessert. Online ordering is really easy. When we went to pick our order up, everything was ready. It was a bit hard to find in the plaza because navigation located it on the other end of the plaza, so we double-checked the map. Also, there wasn't a prominent sign. Anyway, everything taste really good. The portions are a little small for a platter. It was shared between 2 people lol. Overall, great food and service. New Laotian restaurant in the Willow Pass shopping center. I am not that familiar with Laotian food however they do sell Bahn Mi with the traditional meat options like pork and chicken. I ordered two of the lemongrass pork bahn mi and man the meat quality they use here is so far above average. It was like thick cuts of pork chop/steak! Really juicy and tender but more satisfying than your typical thin cut pork. It literally had so much meat my husband had to take some out. I also really like the tapioca pudding dessert they have here made with coconut milk, corn, and taro. Perfect way to end the meal. I'll be back for sure to enjoy their sandwiches again! read more

The noodle rolls were perfect texture but lacked filling. The bbq pork banh mi the bread did not hold up and lacked flavor. The crispy rice salad that everyone raved about left me wanting something more. The rice had way too much chopped onion & not enough meat but I don't even know what kind of meat it was. Maybe ham? It was okay. The drunken noodles were a let down too. The noodles had great texture but aside from that there wasn't much to it. Not much meat or veggies. The crispy pork belly I was looking forward to but sadly let down. The pork skin was stale and not crispy at all, otherwise the meat was good. The mango sticky rice was also a bit disappointing as the mango wasn't sweet and it needed more sauce. I love supporting small businesses but I am not sure if I will be back. One of our most frequented spots in the Concord area! Located next to Rockin Crawfish and in the same plaza as 99ranch this is such a great spot to grab a quick lunch after doing some asian grocery shopping. My huband and I come here pretty often and every single thing we have tried, we absolutely loved! It's a small little spot but it truly is a gem. The service is always friendly and from time to time this family will come out to greet and chat! The last time we went, we had the honor of meeting the wonderful lady who makes their homemade desserts! We love the Noodle salad with lemongrass pork/chicken skewers. The bahn mi sandwiches are stellar. They also have really tasty lao sausages! And we enjoy all of their drinks and desserts. This past time we got the knk and corn and taro tapioca pudding. Decided to give Spicy Joi's another try today as I was out. Went in, and staff were quick to help me get my order in. The owner, Joi, was also there today, and I just spoke with him (after I had picked up my food already) about the bread last time, and appreciated that he addressed the issues then here. Price wise, it's still a bit more for banh mi typically, but it's like we have many banh mi places around anyways, so can't compare it to going to Oakland or something to that effect. The bread today was definitely much better than last time. It wasn't rock hard like last time. Right when I grabbed the banh mi I could already feel that it was better. It wasn't the BEST bread in the world, but it was adequate for its purpose, so no complaints about it this time. The pickled ingredients were definitely not as dry as last time too, so that is also a plus. The lemongrass chicken last time was good, so it was definitely good again this time. Tender, and fairly flavorful, but not overwhelming, so for those that prefer stronger flavors, it may not quite pack the punch you'd want it to. My main critique of it this time, which was a critique I had last time as well, was just the portion of the chicken in the banh mi. Final Verdict with visit 2 at Spicy Joi's: Tasty banh mi, decent price, portion of the meat could be better, but overall a good banh mi for those who are in the mood for one. Staff is friendly, and the owner is also too, so if there are issues, at least it would be easy to approach the issue as I had done myself previously. Walk under the large Rockin' Crawfish sign down the alley and you'll find Spicy Joi on your left. We arrived around 6:30pm on Saturday and were greeted as we perused the menu. Joi's wife Noelle was so friendly, introducing herself and making conversation as we ordered. Our food was ready in ~20 min. Do not sleep on the nam khao!! Slightly sour, full of different textures, and the fresh herbs are a great complement. I also got one spicy sausage to try. It's packed with flavor and actually has heat to it! I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't greasy or too heavy either. I was very excited to try this restaurant. As we entered it appeared to me that this was a self serve restaurant where you order from the counter. We went up to the counter to order and were directed to sit at a table to order. After the order was taken by the same person at the counter, she presented me the electronic pad to tip and pay. I was a little surprised since this was a sit down not a counter order. We ordered the Lao Fried Chicken street food combo for $14.95. It came with 4 pieces of chicken: 1 drumette and 3 wingettes. 1 plastic wrapped portion of microwaved rice which was too hard to eat, a large piece of lettuce, a few slices of cucumbers, some cooked cabbage and 2 large ramekins of dipping sauces which took up 1/4 of the plate. This wings were nothing special. It was overpriced and the rice, when wrapped in plastic and microwaved, is a clear indicator that the rice is not fresh. The second dish we ordered was Khaosoi/minced pork noodles for $15.95. The soup was great, not too salty and the flat noodles were good. However, the minced pork and the few tiny pieces of pork belly were overcooked and very hard to chew. The service was non existent.. The person who brought our food didn't even want to walk around our table to place down the food. He handed it to us since he couldn't place it on the table since the bowl of noodles was there. I was so excited to try this place! Since I don't live in the area, I ordered a bunch of things to try. Unfortunately, the food was just okay. It was also pretty pricey for the portion size (and I get that costs are rising but quality and flavor wasn't there). NAM KHAO $15: One of my fav Lao dishes! This one was super sour - too much lime. The nam also wasn't that good. I love to eat it wrapped in lettuce and herbs but the rice was on top of the lettuce and the whole process was just messy. LAO SAUSAGE PLATE $15: These sausages are solid but so small. The sticky rice comes in a little plastic bag and the "veggies" it's served with is blanched cabbage - nothing special. The pepper dip was also not spicy. You're better off ordering sausages and sticky rice separately, and not as a combo plate. LAO PAPAYA SALAD $13: It was so salty so it wasn't enjoyable. :( RAW BEEF LAAB $18: I was happy they offered a raw option. However, it was so sweet for some reason. But since I also ordered it to be a little bitter, it was a weird oveal flavor. The meat was also cut so chunky so the overall dish was chewy. I did love that the dish was served with raw veggies - Thai eggplants, green beans, and cucumbers. Unfortunately the flavor just wasn't there. KHAO LOD SONG $6: One of my favorite coconut milk desserts! The little pandan strings were only okay. There was a mix of old ones (bigger pieces that were harder and stale) and new ones (firm but still soft in texture). :( Overall, I'm glad I tried this place but I won't be returning. There's better Lao food options in the Bay Area. Despite my experience, I'm happy for this restaurant though and am glad they are offering Lao food to the local community. For those who have never tried Lao food, you all should still come try this place out. :) read more
