I went to this place 3X only becuase it is close to where I work. But, the experience has been very consitency each time. Starting with the food, it is okay. I know quite a few take-out joints serve better food. The biggest turn off was the wait staff. I have lived in the Austin area for 7 years, and haven't found good Chinese food at all until the other day. Where I'm from I still all the Chinese food is over priced, but I know it's based on the portion size, and this why I miss being able to choose from sizes: pint or quart with the exceptions of the dinners. I decided to try this place because my officemate alway go there. I go general Tso shrimp. It's been a while since I got General Tso so I don't remember if it supposed to be tad tart. I got my order to go and I was satisfied. It was very good and the hostess was very nice. I did order my food to go, so I didn't get the bad service some people explained. I've ordered from Snow Pea quite a few times as I live in the neighborhood. While I think the food is pretty good, the service is absolutely horrible. They don't acknowledge customers (especially for take-out orders), aren't very friendly, and just don't seem to care much for the customer except when it's time to pay for the meal. Finding fantastic Chinese food is difficult in our otherwise abundant and diverse grub-loving city. So finding it and getting it delivered is twice the task. Snow Pea satisfies both needs. The need for good Chinese, and of course, the need to sit on your lazy ass and wait for it to arrive. (Although I have to say....ordering take-out here is a new level of "fast" food. Like five minutes fast.) If you do eat-in or order take-out, you'll likely encounter SP's friendly and talkative hostess, who, as the owner's daughter, has plenty of information about Austin cuisine and is more than willing to share. Turns out, her mom used to own BurgerTex, but decided beef and brown sauce were more up her alley than burgers and shakes. While I love BurgerTex, I'm glad she made the move. Here's the bare bones truth about Snow Pea. It's not the most flavorful dish of food you'll ever feast upon. But it's reliable and healthy (the grease levels are unbelievably low). Snow Pea offers a great big flexible menu of Ameri-Chinese favorites, prepared expeditiously, delivered piping hot and assuredly fresh. Prices are moderate - not for the stingy, but spendthrifts will find it easy to splurge here. Maybe a once a week or once a month treat, depending on your budget. I've been to Snow Pea a few times, and have never been really impressed. I've had cold food, tiny portions (especially for a Chinese place!) and a very mediocre experience in their dining room. Update: My mind changed today. +1 star! I'm updating my review to say I've just ordered delivery from Snow Pea for the first time in about a year, and it was really, REALLY good. Stir fried rice (with shrimp for nearly every bite) was absolutely how it should be- borderline burned so that all the rice has the most flavor it can possibly have (along with as little oil as you can possibly get away with). That said, none of it was over cooked, and none of it was under cooked. That's a pretty damned tough feat. For bonus points, I couldn't even eat it all so the portions were on par! :D I also ordered pork dumplings, mostly because I just needed to meet the $12 delivery minimum- dumplings obviously don't have a lot of flavor by themselves, but they were very good, and the sauce they came with was just as it should be- spicy, but not too spicy, lots of flavor, and they gave me enough of it to pour the leftover on my stir fry. Wow. This was a baaaad choice. OK, I want to make it clear that I love delicious, low quality, american chinese food. I crave it like anyone else, and I am fully not expecting Uchi when I order it. I decided to try Snow Pea's delivery since I was busy with homework and I live right up the road from them. The food arrived in about 20 minutes, which was the only good part. I ordered the Pupu platter (mixed appetizers) and the Dragon Roll. The PuPu platter looked meager and, well, old. There was one dried out rib that I could TELL had not been cooked anytime recently. It was coldish and was 100% congealed fat. Not edible. Next, there was some kind of skewer with ice-cold vegetables on the end. The tiny, shriveled and cold meat on the skewer varied in color from bright pinkish to gray, and I couldn't discern its animal orgins. Whoa. The worst part of the Pupu was the tempura fried shrimp. You'd think you couldn't go wrong with a deep fry, but you can if the shrimp has gone bad. So I didn't have much hope left when I got to my sushi roll. Of course, my pupu platter was ice cold, and the sushi was... warm. Sushi is not supposed to be warm, ahh, hmm. It just didn't taste fresh and the $11 Dragon roll was little more than a California roll with some unfresh eel on top. At least I didn't go for anything raw... Sushi - warm. Snow Pea is my favorite Chinese in Austin. They have the best hot and sour soup in town. It has a clean flavor, not musty or weird. Their egg rolls are also tops-crispy with lots of fresh cabbage and other veggies in them. Very tasty! Don't be afraid to order the chicken dishes. It's white meat, thinly sliced, and no googlies. I guess this is considered cheap but not cheap enough for the quality. :( Red Snapper Nigiri: actually pretty good ($1.50) Squid Nigiri: really salty...as if they had been keeping it for awhile... Spicy tuna roll: Descent. I usually go for more interesting rolls but this one was one of the few with a descent happy hour price ($6). So many good things about Snow Pea, where do I begin... I absolutely LOVE their pork dumplings. Far and away the best I've had in Austin. Seems like they are one of the few places that actually make their dumplings in-house as opposed to ordering frozen ones. Also served with a nice garlic/soy dipping sauce. For whatever reason, "American" style chinese food seems to get a bad rep from yelpers. I've seen multiple people type "MSG" this, "MSG" that. But yet Snow Pea DOES NOT USE MSG. Talk about stereotyping... smh people. And to Casey B, who complained about ordering a sushi roll (a Dragon Roll, which had eel on it), are you an idiot? If you did not want "hot sushi", why would you everrrrr order a sushi roll with eel on it? Anybody who has had sushi roll with Eel in or on it knows that they BAKE the eel. Which is why the sushi roll is warm. Just really bothers me seeing one of my favorite local joints have multiple irrational complaints/undeserving negative reviews. Don't ever come here for real Chinese food because this is some sweetened version of what the owners think "Americans" want. From the looks of the public, mostly very overweight people (at lunch) I guess they crave sweet and sugar. And as we all know, sugar is a drug and is addictive. There are only some real Chinese dishes that are sweet like orange beef or sweet and sour shrimp and certainly using sugar is not the norm, whether Cantonese, Mandarin, Szechuan, Fujianese or Beijinese. Most foods are NOT SWEETENED. Well the snooty waitress was about to engage me in an argument when I said that not all Americans eat sweet Chinese food and that Chinese food itself is not on average sweet. I then probed asking what the ingredients were in the garlic chicken because the one time I came here for lunch prior I ordered that and spit it out. "We add extra sugar" to the garlic chicken she confided. OK what about xyz I went through the entire protein lunch list. ALL HAD SUGAR ADDED. Do you have anything that doesn't have sugar added? No! Not really. Shrimp in lobster sauce is less sweet as is the lo mein but still there's sugar. What about MSG? YES they're still using it. Want to become a druggie? After my experience here tonight, I sure am glad their food is fabulous!!! I'd only eaten here for take out, but my friends and I decided to dine in. There was a HUGE private-ish sorority party going on and the college youngins were endlessly obnoxious and annoying. At a spry 27 years of age, I felt really old...as did my slightly younger companions. As I said before, I'm glad the food is fabulous. My typical Chinese standby is chicken fried rice, which is really tasty here. I also base my experiences on crab rangoon, of which I've had better. The macademia nut chicken is very flavorful, full of veggies and (duh) macademia nuts. This evening, I opted for shrimp fried rice...not quite as tasty as the chicken. I guess the shrimp was prepared differently than I'm used to or something. The service was great...even with all the "festivities" going on around. The waitron was very apologetic and you could tell that she was pretty annoyed (as we were) with the youngins. Snow Pea obviously has a problem, because I had much the same sorority/fraternity experience two months ago. With only us and the cast of a spring break documentary in the restaurant, we tried to counterbalance the din by loudly arguing about Volvo's declining quality and the Prairie Home Companion movie. Came here for dinner after really craving Chinese food. I've never been able to find a decent Chinese food restaurant in the area so I was happen to find this place on Yelp. We got hot & sour soup, egg drop soup, egg rolls, sesame chicken, and beef and broccoli. All were pretty good, but I would pass on the egg rolls next time. It was definitely your typical Americanized Chinese food. The portions were good and the prices were very reasonable! The sesame chicken was also all white meat which was nice. The best thing about this restaurant was definitely the service! Our waiter was so genuinely nice and friendly! It seemed like more of a take out place and the restaurant was basically empty. I came here today for take-out for lunch. I've been here multiple times in the past and have always loved them. They're in my neighborhood, clean, affordable, fast... the list goes on. I hadn't been since they closed for remodel and went back for the first time today. For someone who was once a fan, i'm disappointed and not going back. I tried other restaurants around town while they were closed to get my Chinese fix. I found those other restaurants to be better. Maybe I had them on an off day. They were packed when I came in (surprising for a Chinese place to be during lunch) so obviously people like them. But I ordered Chicken Lomein and felt like there was no flavor. The chicken was cooked well and I liked the amount of veggies in it, but the sauce itself lacked flavor. It also seemed really watery for Lomein to me, because well hey lomein shouldn't be watery. I also had ordered a hot and sour soup and when I got home realized I had never gotten it. Like I said I've liked this place a lot in the past, but they've lost me after today's visit. Do yourself a favor and go to Hao Q on Farwest. That's where I went when this place was closed, I was thinking I wouldn't like it more than SnowPea, but today proved to me how good Hao Q really is. read more

Worst Chinese food in Austin. I ordered online through Yelp's Eat 24. When I got there the older lady in the front was answering the phone and ignored me for a while. Then I just told her that I placed an online order. She yells at me and says that she doesn't have Internet. She says this as she gestures towards her computer. I would've left, but I prepaid my meal. Big mistake. I showed her my phone then she realizes that they indeed do have Internet. Then she continues to answer the phone then leaves without saying anything to me. To top it off the food was horrible. The Lomein tasted weird and old. The egg roll tasted like it was raw from the inside and like it's been sitting in a medicine cabinet for awhile. Don't bother with this place. I recommend Chinatown on Bee Caves. As far as my friends and I are concerned, the holy grail of sushi is a Korean or Chinese restaurant with high-quality fish and a cheap but plentiful roll and nigiri selection. Some people in Austin might tell you that Korea Garden fits the bill, but I've been much more impressed with Snow Pea. Located just off of West 35th and Jefferson, Snow Pea has a half-price sushi happy hour and interesting specials of an Uchi or Mushashino caliber...seriously. I almost always get the Ahi Tower, a vertical combination of rice, avocado, crab, and tuna with wasabi cream and tobiko. I've had a similar dish at Uchi that was not as good and twice the price. And Uchi doesn't have a waiter mixing the ingredients together for you tableside and telling you how jealous he is of your order. The Chinese food isn't bad, either. When I ordered the orange shrimp a few months ago, everyone at the table wanted a taste. read more

Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. The reviews I read before i ordered delivery from here were pretty good but my review, is not good. Let me start with the good. When I called the person who answered the phone was sweet and courteous. She told me that my order would arrive by 7:45 PM, it actually arrived at 7:25 PM, which was literally 15 minutes after I ordered it. (I live close.) The delivery guy was also smiling and courteous. I tipped him $3. Unfortunately, the sesame chicken I ordered had a soggy breading and the meat was over cooked. The rice was dry and crumbly. I was intrigued by the veggie dumplings but wish I had not been. I ate 1 of them. The rest went in the trash. It was more like green pea dumplings. I ordered the food last night, I threw the rest in the trash today. It wasn't even worth going for the leftovers. I was really disappointed. I ordered the $15 firecracker shrimp special, and literally got 8 shrimp. This isn't the first time I have gotten very little when ordering shrimp. It seems to be standard operating procedure. The chicken and beef dishes are pretty good, but no great bargain (I would say the orange beef is definitely above average though). The delivery is reliable and fast, and service is otherwise good. I can be skeptical of Chinese restaurants, but Snowpea is 1 mile from home & yelp reviews were mostly positive, so 6 months ago we gave it a go and here's where we are today: 1st visit- hit the nail on the head with the Basil dish, we had chicken and it is all white meat, and just divine! The Hot & Sour soup is bombtastic, too. 2nd visit- not great, got lunch takeout of more American style dishes, like kung pao & orange chicken. If this had been my first time I'd not have gone back. 3rd-8th- I stick to what I know is good & it's the Basil dish & you can add extra meat (I.e. feed 3-4 ppl) for $2 more. As well as the H&S soup! Last Saturday our party of three split Moo Shu Shrimp and Chicken with Garlic Sauce and had side orders of Egg Rolls and Soup. It was all excellent. This is one of me and my husbands favorite places to get sushi. We have been a handful of times and every time we go we have a great experience! Not only is the sushi really awesome its at a good price and the staff is always welcoming and extremely nice. On the way back from running an errand, I decided to stop by here to get something to go. The hostess was waiting outside by the door and gave me a stare like "I was bothering her break time". She did not smile at all, and after I said "To-Go", she pretty much just threw the menu at me. That is when I saw their "Lunch" menu. I automatically thought: "Is this the dinner menu?" I used to eat here for lunch a few times a week with coworkers. This place offers a menu of Chinese platters, plus a couple of Korean and Japanese selections, including a perfectly-sized bulgogi or sushi bento. The Chinese lunch specials are consistently good, with a pretty tasty sesame chicken. Went with a group of about 30-40 people on a Friday night at 8. We were able to book the day of!! About $20 per person for unlimited sake and beer and buffet style food. They had spring/egg rolls, orange chicken (or something similar), chicken fried rice, and broccoli beef. The orange chicken and chicken friend rice were very good! I would definitely come back and order both of those. The people that worked there were so kinda and attentive. Snow Pea is a great lunch spot with all the usual Chinese fare, plus sushi selections including (bento boxes, etc). The lunch plates are moderately priced in the $7-10 range and are great quality. The General Tso's chicken here is one of my favorites by far. The sushi is the only thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars, but I wouldn't go to a Chinese joint to eat sushi anyways... so I won't knock it based on that. The hostess that takes my lunch order is always so friendly and even though I'm not a "regular" here she always recognizes me. "Regular" would be a once a week kind of guy but I'm more of a two or three times a month guy. SAKI BOMBS! I went here with some friends to celebrate a buddy of mine's birthday. I have several complains but those are easily outweighed by the quality of food and service of their staff. We showed up semi intoxicated and the staff was really accommodating in placing us away from most of the other patrons. Our waiter was great! He got us drinks quickly and was really knowledgeable about everything on the menu which was good because we all were on the fence between a few dishes. Everyone loved their food and I thought, for as large a group that we had, that it came out quick. Also, the waiter was great at splitting up the ticket for us. However, as good as it was, I have a few petty complaints. We got a couple of large things of saki which had a number of "shots per size" next to it. I believe that number was inflated. Also, they have steamed rice and fried rice but the fried rice is not actually friend rice (w/ egg, carrots, onions, ect.). It was one of those "fried rices" that's just steamed rice with brown sauce... that's not fried rice in my book. Anyways, it was good. I'd go back but it would probably have to be in a large group again because yelling "saki, saki, saki, bombs!" and banging on the tables with everyone was too much fun. read more

A good and reasonably priced Sushi Happy Hour servicing the Brykerwoods/Rosedale neighborhoods. This isn't your "Night Out" for sushi, but rather your quick fix when you gotsta get some, though I must say that the presentation wasn't anything to scoff at. It was the first place we ate out with the baby (4 weeks). And we've been back since! The fish is firm and tasty. Yellowtail perhaps a tad chewy. I can report good consistency. Their prices have become a bit inflated but this place offers up straight down the middle, solid Chinese food. All of the basics like crab Rangoon, orange chicken, and chicken lo mein...all of them hit the spot and no msg (whatever that even means).
