Wow. It's unfortunate that this place is getting a 1 star from me. Have been coming to this location for many many years. Service was at one time friendly and great, food was always hot and freshly made. So not the case anymore. Still friendly, but less than stellar. 2nd time I've been here this week because the last time, I thought lazy service was just a new employee however it's not the case. Ordering seems pretty straight forward, but I found out everything with the exception of the eggs are "pre-made" or not made to order. Bacon comes out soggy, limp and barely warm to the touch not hot because it's made in mass just taken out of a container and tossed on a plate. The toast is the same, "pre-made" and tossed on the plate as well. Pancakes are definitely made way in advance. Came to the table warm at best and super dense. Asked that they be re-heated and they never came back at all. Some 15 or so minutes, I was under the impression that they were being freshly made and not reheated as I had asked for. Another 10 minutes go by, still no hotcakes. Later the server realized that the hotcakes had never been reheated or remade. Although apologies where offered, I was till charged the full amount although I was missing a key component of my breakfast. Spires (Del Amo and Cherry) has become indicative of the current state of affairs when it comes to food and the service industry. I've always enjoyed coming here and bringing friends and family, however these two experiences; so close in dates have shown me that this place is no longer for me. I wish them continued success as this place has been in the community for several decades. I cannot and will not endorse or suggest this location. Food is good here. Cooked to order from the taste. Had the pork chops they were quite juicy and tender. Atmosphere is nice and clean. Design is dated but still works. Was treated to a Samoan song from some of the patrons. Beautiful voices. Also had apple pie. Not the best. My brother had strawberry sundae and he loved it. Our waiter was amazing, great job. After a very STRESSFUL morning, I made it in for breakfast. I was lucky enough to have Sonia as my waitress. She was very attentive and sweet. I ordered the sirloin steak and eggs, it was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the country breakfast which he enjoyed very much. I always enjoy coming to Spires, makes me feel right at home. Unlike the spires we went to in Tustin two days ago, this one wasn't so good. We were seated next to the kitchen. The constant banging of dishes was distracting. However, the main complaint was the food. The spaghetti was not tasty like the other spires, the soup was salty, unlike the other spires. And they did not have the grilled hamburger patty with avocado, unlike the other location. Finally, the bathroom had not been upgraded like the other location. Service was so so. Spires is a dependable "not so fancy place" to get breakfast, lunch, and dinner with good portions at very affordable prices. This signature octagonal shaped "like a stop sign" hut restaurant can be found throughout the Southland at busy intersections. Spires is a good place to go for breakfast especially when it's served all day. The clientele are mostly older folks. The breakfast menu offers such items as eggs, omelettes, skillets, steak, pancakes, waffles, and sides. The lunch/dinner menu offers salads, soups, chili, burgers, sandwiches, comfort dishes, pasta, seafood, steaks, chicken, and desserts (sundaes plus cakes & pies on display). Kids menu (10 & under) is served for dine-in only. Daily specials are offered too. A half sandwich with soup & salad starts at $4.99. Dinners come with soup or salad and bread. The prices are very reasonable, usually under $10 for a very filling meal, some items around $15 like the NY Steak & Shrimp Dinner. I stopped in for dinner at this Spires at the corner of East Del Amo Blvd and Cherry Ave. The atmosphere and décor here is so old school 1970's with paneled walls, old U-shaped booths and seating at the lunch counter. The cooks in the kitchen wear chef hats. I got an ice water and I went with the Spaghetti with Chili ($6.99/$6.29 seniors) which came with soup and garlic toast. I had the New England Clam Chowder, which was very basic hot cream soup with minced clams and potatoes, though I found a small piece of paper bag in the soup. The entrée came out quickly. The generous portion of soft spaghetti and beef chili (already mixed in) was very meaty and filling and the garlic toast was thick and buttery. No dessert for me, since I had enough food. The service was efficient and it's pay at the register. Overall, a decent meal at a good price for under $10 with tax and tip. On the way out, I saw an elderly couple playing with the skill crane machine (win stuffed toys), the gent trying to win a prize for his wife. Wow! You're never to old too be a kid again. read more

Hash browns, hot and crispy outer crust nice and soft inside. Sausage, solid. Bacon, good stuff. Biscuits and gravy, pretty good. Good coffee, wish they had an iced coffee option. No grapefruit juice. Didn't even ask but my waitress brought out all the hot sauces with my breakfast, service is on point. Jan and I were in a breakfast kind of mood, so we stopped by Spires. You seriously can't go wrong with breakfast, right? WRONG! It's 6pm just pulled in and there are quite a few cars in the parking lot, that's always a good sign (or so we thought). We walk through the front doors and aren't greeted right away, but what's a ten second wait to some starving women? We got to our booth and were handed some menus and thus began our quest for yummy breakfasts just waiting to be devoured. Whilst browsing through the menu, two older gentlemen walk in and are immediately greeted and ushered to a booth AND asked if they'd like something to drink (to which they responded with, "water, please." because I'm nosey and overhear things). But wait, I want something to drink too! Now, now, I didn't throw a fit over not being asked if I wanted something to drink. I waited patiently for my server to stop by and take our orders. And she did! Finally! My stomach can stop roaring for attention as I just assured it that food is on its way. Jan orders the Country Breakfast with extra bacon on the side and asked the waitress to please have them make the bacon medium. Jan: Can you please tell them to make my bacon medium, I don't like crispy. Waitress: *mumbles something* Jan: Excuse me? Waitress: Oh, I said I don't like mine crispy either. Jan: Yeah! Girl, you don't need to mumble! If you prefer one thing over another, please say so! 90% of the time when you say such and such is better than that, best believe we'll be having such and such. BTW, I ordered the Chef's Omlete with pancakes on the side (don't judge me! I haven't eaten all day) Now to the good part. The food! We get our food and my hash is burnt. It's like they used a special pan from hell. My eggs were so tough, even Rocky Balboa couldn't last nine rounds against them. And my pancakes were just plain bad. There was not enough ketchup and syrup in the world that could save my food. Needless to say, my food stayed on its plate. How do you get hot tea wrong? Well, I got a hot cup of water, a brown slice of lemon, one honey packet...and NO damn tea bag!! Should of made a run for the door at that point.. but we're a glutton for punishment. The good? Yes it is out of date. And the core customers keep getting older. The menu now has both large print and photos . Service is so so a bit slow and the regulars are not in any rush. Needed breakfast that wasn't from a fast food joint, and couldn't think of anywhere that might serve it at 3pm. After driving in circles for a half hour, I remembered. SPIRES! And I should have remembered since it was only 2 minutes from my residence. As we arrived, it was "business the way I like it". Dead. Nobody here except a few seniors having coffee. This works for me in a variety of ways. 1) Better / more attentive service. and 2) Better food because it's not pre-made. Like piles of bacon. Our waitress was amazing and very friendly. She was attentive (as listed above) and made sure our drinks were never empty. That's a huge plus in my book, if you've ever read my reviews. The food selection is what you'd expect from a business like Spires. It's "a little bit of everything". This includes breakfast foods, steaks, hamburgers, pastas, etc. It's similar to Denny's. *The Wow Factor* The interior is also what you'd expect. It's old looking, the mix of colors you'd see in your great grandmothers house - including turquoise chairs, orange walls, white ceilings and that weird dark wood paneling like linoleum. That got me to thinking... perhaps the interior isn't old. Maybe it's current and there's magic! But the real magic is from the technology they employ to make you feel like it's 1950. Continue reading to find out more! The front door archway has to be a futuristic scientifically advanced interdimensional phase shifting time portal that transports users to the year 1950. This was my first visit here last week and I was very pleased with not only their delicious food but their customer service and the cleanliness of the establishment. First off everyone was very nice and very friendly, I felt very welcomed there from beginning to end. The meal was very delicious and it was cooked perfectly, the man who took my order was very thoughtful to even ask how I wanted my hash browns And they made them just how I like them.
