Nothin but cream
Christie B.

Customer service when ordering at the counter was great. The guy at pick-up not so much. Was in town with my mom and had to find out what the hype was all about so I ordered a cup of the "famous" chowder. I LOVE chowder and since I live between both Santa Cruz and San Francisco, I've enjoyed plenty. Sadly, the chowder at Slash was pretty disappointing. My cup had very few clams and potatoes and an overwhelming amount of cream. The place was packed even at 3pm so clearly tons of folks like it but not me unfortunatly. The vibe is old school diner. I won't be returning any time soon.

Yes it is true, the best chowder around. I know seems like a tourist trap, but it is not. The Splash Cafe is just flat out good! You must stop in and partake. I had the bread bowl and chowder, a simple classic. I recommend the splash cafe carrot pepper sauce - Raucous Daucus!! My Bride ordered the clam strips and chips, fried perfectly! Thank you Splash Cafe, keep doing what you do! We'll be back every time we are in town.

Lobster Roll

While searching for restaurants in SLO County, Splash Cafe came up repeatedly as having some of the best clam chowder in California, so it quickly became a priority stop on my trip. When I arrived on a Monday evening, I was surprised by how long the line was to order. What impressed me even more was how quickly the staff moved everyone through and got food out. They clearly know what they're doing. The clam chowder absolutely lived up to the hype. It was rich, creamy, and packed with flavor. Honestly, just writing this review makes me crave another bowl. My mom ordered the lobster roll, and we were impressed by how generous they were with the lobster. Another nice bonus is that they offer daily specials, giving you even more reasons to come back and try something new. Overall, I highly recommend Splash Cafe and would consider it a must-visit spot when exploring SLO County.

Fish and Chip (3/10): lack seasoning and flavor

Located next to pismo beach. Theres paid parking lot or paid street parking nearby. Or you go a block away theres free 3 hour street parking. Process: - Line up - Order - Grab a table If you order to dine in, they will call your name when its ready. Just raise your hand to let them know where you are so they can bring it out for you. If you do to go, your food is called out at the back of the store. This place is pretty poppin. We arrived around 5 PM. All the tables were full but we got luckily and got 2 seats. I would not recommend bringing a large party here to dine in. They have 2 genderless restrooms located all the way in the back. It's clean and well kept. Order: - Clam chowder (9/10): the clam chowder is amazing. They have actual clam inside. You can get it in a bread bowl or container. The container size range from cup to pint. - Fish & Chip (3/10): This was also recommended on the menu but it was subpar. Lacked a lot of flavor. The chips looked season but it tasted like nothing. The tartar sauce and lemon helped out a lot. I would definitely come back for the clam chowder tho!

Been here numerous times and I can't believe I haven't written a review. After trying so many clam chowders, Splash Cafe has the best in my opinion and hits the spot every single time. My go-to is either the chowder in a bread bowl or ordering bread on the side both ways are delish and you have to get it fully loaded with all the toppers! The clam chowder is creamy, thick, well seasoned, has generous portions of clam that's prepared well and the additional seafood toppings, bacon, and cheese elevates it even more. I've even tried their frozen chowder and after heating it in the microwave it's still tasty and delicious. The bread is soft, warm, toasted, and pairs well with the chowder. When in Pismo, this is definitely a spot to try!

Deconstructed LOADED Clam Chowder Bread Bowl

Best clam chowder in California? I saw a claim saying that Splash Cafe was the best clam chowder in ALL of California and I had to go try it myself. I came on a Thursday when it was raining and there was still a line out the door. We also struggled to find a parking spot regardless of the weather being rain or shine. Majority of the parking spots are metered and it was $5 for 1 hour which is crazy. Since we came on a Thursday, the loaded clam chowder bread bowl had a $2 discount! The total came out to be $18.35 after tax. Obviously, we ordered that and shared it between two people! It took about 5 minutes after ordering for us to receive our order. Food: Loaded Clam Chowder Bread Bowl (9/10): Oh WOW! We decided to take it to-go and their packaging was so convenient. Everything was packaged separately and deconstructed so the bread bowl wouldn't be all soggy and the bisque would be non-existent by the time we got home. In the loaded bread bowl, they cut out the hole so we can place the bisque in and they toast the top with butter! The loaded clam chowder comes with cheese, clam, crab(?), bacon, and green onion! The clam chowder was SO creamy! Every bite was LOADED with all the toppings.

clam chowder bowl and cup + sourdough slice

The best clam chowder I've had outside of Seattle (it even tops SF)! This spot absolutely lives up to the hype. The chowder was rich, creamy, thick, and comforting with heavenly flavor. They have several other menu items, but I stuck with their famous chowder with a sourdough slice and an order of seafood topping (bits of crab and shrimp)... YUM. I only wish I wasn't still kinda full from snacking on the beach so that I could eat more. I personally wanted to taste the chowder itself and let it shine on its own, so I only put a bit of the seafood topping and their complimentary oyster crackers; turns out, I'd say you genuinely don't need any toppings because the chowder is just that good as a standalone, but to each their own! The sourdough on the other hand is a non-negotiable for me. I'd say prices and portion sizes were fair. Splash Cafe was just a short walk from the pier and we got lucky with no line when we arrived around 7pm on a weekday. It was still pretty busy and seats fill up fast, but we were able to secure some barstool seating. After ordering the register, we thankfully didn't have to wait longer than 10-15 minutes for our food, despite a bustling evening. The casual surfy vibes inside were charming and very fitting. Service was relatively quick as mentioned and the staff were pleasant. Please do yourself a favor and try this spot!

Still is The Best Clam Chowder in the West! I will come here again and again until I taste otherwise. I am sad the SLO location is no longer there, now the pismo line is always wrapped around the block. But you can always phone in and order ahead and take it to the beach to enjoy the sunset. Get the clam chowder and whatever toppings you like or have it alone by itself. It's so good! the Staff are always friendly here. Small location so be patient!

Chowder Bread Bowl with Seafood Topping

What can I say about splash, it's a classic. I've been coming here for 35 years and when I come back to the Central Coast, I always stop by for a clam chowder bread bowl with seafood topping. Yes, during the peak tourist season it's packed, with lines going around the building. Yes, there is a line to get to the 2 non-gendered restrooms. Yes, the tourists make it a pain for the locals to grab a bite, but it's worth the wait. I used to have several family members and friends who worked here. It's not made from scratch, but it's one of the best clam chowder bread bowls I've had all up and down the coast of California. Stop by, relax, grab a drink and chowder and enjoy the coast. Love Splash!

Splash is a solid place for a quick bite. We visited the one in SLO before it closed a couple of years ago so this is the first time we tried this location. Very busy in downtown but the line does move pretty quickly. Once we ordered our food we got our food in about 10 mins. We ordered a bowl of clam chowder and lobster roll. The lobster roll was okay, it was a lobster salad which we expected and it was loaded with filling. We should've ordered the clam chowder in a bread bowl. It would've been perfect. The clam chowder is a must there. It was so creamy, flavorful, and packed with clams and potatoes. We enjoyed it very much and would come back just for the chowder.

My family and I stopped into Pismo Beach to sightsee while on the way to Solvang on Friday! We did some research beforehand on where to stop in for a quick bite and came across Splash Cafe! When we arrived, the line was pretty short and we noticed that we had just beat the rush! The inside was pretty small and they request that you do not sit at a table or the bar area until after you have ordered at the counter which I like. We got a seat in front of one of their windows with a nice view of the area. We ordered the Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl with Loaded Toppings to share since we were still a little full from breakfast. It was so good - I loved the added toppings of green onions, seafood, cheese and even bacon! They also offer Fish and Chips, Chicken Strips, burgers and specialty sandwiches like their Lobster Roll and Shrimp SLO Boy. I also saw a entire case of fresh baked goods! Staff weren't overly friendly at the counter, but the employee who brought us our order was lovely. Overall, I'm glad we had the chance to stop in and check out their award winning Clam Chowder - I can see why there is always a line out the door! We will definitely stop in again next time we are visiting Pismo Beach! Check them out!

Stopped by for lunch on a weekday. The line wasn't too long, so ordering was quick, and the food came out a few minutes after I sat down. There was also more open seating than I expected. I ordered the lobster roll and a cup of clam chowder. The lobster roll is pretty filling and comes packed with meat -- probably enough to share if you want to try other items. The clam chowder was good, creamy and straightforward. The place has a casual, hole-in-the-wall beach town feel that fits Pismo well. It's within walking distance of the beach, and there's nearby parking for about $5 an hour. Overall, a solid option for a quick, casual lunch.

I had a lovely, memorable experience at Splash Cafe (Pismo Beach). I ordered the Clam Chowder Bread Bowl ($12.95). WOW! That immediate familiar clean salty flavor bubbles through. It's creamy and very fresh. Surprisingly, its buttery, fluffy bread brought a bright crunch. I couldn't stop myself from smiling as I continued to feast. I arrived at Splash Cafe (Pismo Beach) on Wednesday (around 8:50AM - 10 Minutes Before Opening Time). A line had already formed!! POPULAR spot! It's a brief two minute walk from Pismo Beach's Pier. Parking is challenging; nearby parking spots contain parking meters. Staff is very professional, welcoming, and efficient. Staff is very experienced and accustomed to the long line of customers. Staff quickly helped me. My food arrived within two minutes. Fast! As mentioned, I ordered the Clam Chowder Bread Bowl ($12.95). It's one of the best! Fresh food, thoughtfully prepared chowder, and delightful service is very apparent. This location has won multiple awards for their Clam Chowder, and the high quality truly shows. As I bit into those thick clams, I smiled. On ambiance, Splash Cafe (Pismo Beach) feels a little claustrophobic due to its narrow dining area and many customers. However, there's a couple large tables in the rear, and there's small tables & counters near the front. Muffled diner music plays, but the main noise are the chatting customers. Overall, I found a blissful experience at Splash Cafe (Pismo Beach). The long lines are well-deserved! It's one of the best clam chowders that I've tasted in a long time. If you love clam chowders, this is an easy recommendation. 5 out of 5. Go!

Yes they do, but I only remember seeing shirts and maybe caps

Yes, they should open on New Year's Day - the last time I was there they were open.

Are dogs allowed In the outdoor dining area?

When I went in late Feb, I didn't see any outdoor seating. I saw some folks take their food to-go down to the beach. It's a couple minute walk away

Is the clam chowder bread bowl order equivalent to a cup or pint of clam chowder?

Is the clam chowder gluten free?

It is not.

Does the lobster roll have real lobster? We ordered it and it came shredded and couldn't really taste any lobster.

I believe it's probably not fresh lobster. We thought the same it didn't taste like it had lobster in it

Is this a good restaurant for someone with celiac?

No.

Do they take reservations for seating? If not, when is the best time to go to avoid long waits? We will be (hoping) going on a Friday if that makes a difference!

No, they don't take reservations! They are a counter-service restaurant. Any time that is not a typical meal time is probably the best time to go. Breakfast is usually less crowded than lunch/dinner, but their chowder is a must so up to you!

Are there any vegan options?

They have them now. A beyond meat backyard burger that is labeled vegan, a veggie burger that might be customizable to be vegan, bread, and fries. Probably can make a vegan taco with no protein alternatives. For vegetarians there is grilled cheese.…

Not that I have seen in regards to jicama. However, you can probably do a bun less hot dog, a lettuce wrapped burger, etc.

They mostly busy from spring through the summer but if you go before 1130 or after 130, you should be ok.

Is Clam chowders contain bacon?

No, but you can add it as a topping. :-)

Do they have a kids menu?

I don't think they have an actual kids menu, but there are plenty of options for kids: burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs (my daughter loved it!), chicken strips and fries. Great prices too!

Is it only seafood served here?

No... They also have burgers, fries, etc. I just happen to love seafood.

Clam chowder gluten free?

No it's not

Is the crab topper real crab or imitation crab?

Note that the parking lot, depending on which day you go, can fill up very quickly. The location is right off of the 101 and easy to find. We checked in and was seated within 10 minutes at a booth that overlooked the beautiful views of the Pismo Beach coast line. Our server, a younger black woman, who told us her nickname was 'TiTi', if I'm not mistaken, was wonderful. Her personality and hospitality was infectious and exceeded 5 stars. She brought us fresh hot corn and flour tortillas with a small cup of brown sugar butter and three different salsas to try. Everything was delicious. We ordered the surf and turf special which was a jumbo shrimp on top of a filet mignon that rested on mash potatoes and a creamy/savory white sauce. We also ordered the lobster Mac and cheese. We had a reservation for a birthday dinner and arrived about 30 minutes early. We were told we'd be seated closer to our reservation time, which was completely understandable. Even after our reservation time had passed, we had to check in with the host again before we were finally seated, despite there being plenty of empty tables. The service at the front definitely could have been handled better. The food, on the other hand, was very good with a great variety of options. I loved that they start you off with freshly made tortillas, cinnamon butter, and salsa to share. I ordered the Campechana de Mariscos, which was fresh, generously portioned, and perfect for sharing. We also had the Molcajete, and it was delicious! It came with a great mix of steak, chicken, chorizo, jumbo shrimp, nopal, and cheese. The portion was generous and easily enough for two people. Other dishes we ordered also included the pozole, chicken nachos, and lobster mac and cheese. Everything was delicious as well! The mac and cheese especially. For drinks, I tried the Golden Hour nonalcoholic cocktail, and unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend it. It tasted like watered-down ginger beer with no carbonation and only the faintest hint of pineapple. It was more on the bitter taste. Overall, this is a great restaurant for the ocean views and flavorful food. The portions are generous, and there's something for everyone on the menu. The only downside was the host service and the unnecessary wait despite having a reservation. I'd still come back for the food and the scenery.

We decided to sit in the patio area since it was nice day, even though there was a little bit of construction noise next door, it didn't take away from hearing the great music selection. Moments later a server brought out the food, everything smelled and looked delicious. He ordered fish N' chips w/upgraded garlic fries, (we love garlic fries!) some of the best garlic fries we've had, every bite was garlicky & dipped in ranch...mmmmm perfect combo. The fish was tender but crispy bites from the batter. I ordered the Pismo wrap (could be shared), I was not expecting it to be so packed with all the fillings. It was stuffed with sliced tri-tip, curly fries, avocado, pepper jack cheese, and bbq sauce. Every bite was so satisfying, flavorful and had a little bit of everything. Some saltiness from the fries to sweetness from the bbq sauce, well balanced (I did add some cholula sauce because I enjoy some spiciness). Definitely added as a stop when doing a day trip to Pismo. I'll be recommending friends/family to make a stop at Hoagies if they're ever in the area and they're looking for a chomp because a bite isn't enough. The counterperson taking my order kept saying lettuce, and I repeated a few times, you mean cabbage, since that's what is written on the menu, and they seemed a bit confused.. But it did come with lettuce, not cabbage (?). Hmm. The fish was okay, but not fried to enough of a crisp, so it was not crunchy. It was also a relatively small amount of cod in the the burrito wrap. I say burrito wrap as the tortilla was pretty thick and barely toasted. I did see other patrons sitting at the tables with much toastier-looking wraps, and it looked like the steak wrap came in a wheat tortilla. So is there more than one kind of tortilla? The tartar sauce was middle of the road and there was not enough of it in the wrap for my tastes - I like sauce. But I could not get more for the side, as the line was out the door by the time I discovered I could use more tartar sauce! So while it was fine, and the fish seemed fresh, I was somewhat disappointed, and did not munch this wrap with the zeal that I do the one from the other locale in town where I typically buy the killer cod wrap. The curly fries were good and well salted. Lots of people sitting outside; tables could've been cleaned better. Maybe staff should come out and wipe them down periodically.

A family owned business, open for breakfast and lunch and serving great home-cooked meals. We had to wait for a bit for a table; they have a pad and pen on the stand outside and you put your name and the number of your party on the pad. As spots open either inside or out, a young man would come over and scratch off the next in line. Once called, our server, Aaron, came over to offer drinks and see if we had any questions. It was busy and he was definitely working a large number of tables but at the same time he was attentive and pleasant. Wife had oatmeal with the addition of blueberries and nuts and I chose the hamburger patty with eggs over medium. The oatmeal was good, nothing out of the world and the berries were fresh...she had to ask for the nuts because they didn't come out initially. My breakfast was good...burger was thin and cooked through but not dry and the eggs were almost medium! Served with home fries, which I think were a bit greasy but tasty. Daughter and son-in-law had the strawberry waffle and she said it was tasty, malty, and fresh strawberries (not that gel-like goo some places cover their waffles with) and lots of fresh whip cream. They also ordered bacon, well done and it came without that well-done crispy way of cooking bacon. Overall a good, solid breakfast spot with good food. No pictures this time around...

We stopped by Blast & Brew for dinner with four people and our Goldendoodle, Bailey, and had an…read moreoverall great experience. We were seated outside immediately, and the staff even rearranged tables to comfortably accommodate our group. Our server was friendly, checked on us frequently throughout the meal, happily brought to-go boxes when we were finished, and was very accommodating to both us and Bailey. She also brought Bailey a water bowl after we asked, which we appreciated. One thing that stood out was that we weren't initially offered waters for the table. It felt a little unusual that each of us had to ask individually before receiving water, especially since that's typically one of the first things brought to the table. My mom and aunt enjoyed using the self-pour beer wall, where you load a beer card and pay by the ounce, my brother ordered a soda, and I had a cocktail. It just seemed like a missed opportunity to make a better first impression. The food was definitely the highlight. We started with the giant Bavarian pretzel, which was a great appetizer for sharing. The only thing we would have changed was having a little more cheese sauce because the pretzel is so large. My brother and I split the Cowboy Mac & Cheese, and paired with the pretzel it ended up being the perfect amount of food for both of us. My mom enjoyed her burger and fries, and my aunt's birria tacos looked incredible with the consommé for dipping. Everything we ordered was flavorful, well prepared, and generously portioned. After dinner, we loved being able to take Bailey for a walk thanks to the nearby beach access, which made for a really nice way to end the evening. My only real disappointment was the patio layout. The ocean views are mostly reserved for the indoor dining room, while the main patio faces Highway 101. There are only a couple of outdoor tables with an ocean view, but they don't have umbrellas. Since it was a warm afternoon, we had to choose between sitting in the sun with a view or sitting in the shade without one, so we opted for comfort. It feels like adding a few umbrellas to those ocean-facing tables would make a huge difference and allow more guests to actually enjoy the coastal setting. Overall, we had a great meal with friendly service, good food, and a welcoming atmosphere for Bailey. With a few small improvements to the patio and a stronger first impression by offering waters to the table, this would easily be a 5-star experience.
