We had dinner reservations this past Wednesday which is their fried chicken night. The hostess sat us, and we were then greeted by an apparent waitress. The waitress was conversational and sweet but unable to use the corkscrew. I showed her how. I ordered a salad and salmon, and my wife ordered the chicken. After eating my salad, the empty, dirty plate sat there for at least 20 minutes. The staff clearly had no supervision and most stood around or wandered aimlessly, like a scene out of the Zombie Apocalypse. We were the first ones to be seated and the restaurant quickly started to fill up. Although the later arrivals were served their entrees, we were still sitting without food an hour into the experience. Our waiter never came to the table, not once. The waitress that poured the wine had disappeared. My wife went to the hostess station and asked that our orders be cancelled, and the waitress and another staff member said "okay". They didn't care to know why, what might be wrong, how they might help, etc. We were putting on our coats when the entrees showed up. My wife was livid, beyond disappointed. The disappointment for both of us is even more profound being that we so rarely went out during the pandemic, and then to be treated so callously when taking a stab at restaurant dining. Who will reimburse me for the complete waste of my time? My wife emailed the manager however she was not given the courtesy of a response. The lack of interest and the f--- you attitude is sad. We had reservations for 6 of us in March however we cancelled those and will not be going back. It wasnt always like this. We have been going for many years, back to when chef Maldonado put out exquisite meals almost every time. There is much chirping these days about giving restaurant staff a break, being understanding and generous, etc. on the heels of Covid. After being quarantined and restricted and suffering financially for over two years one might think that the staff would be happy for the customers to return and eager to provide service. I have always eyed this place when I swing down to Healdsburg. I finally got to check this place out. Here is the breakdown: Cocktail- 3 Ambiance-4 Food- 3.5. The chicken wings were a dissapointment. They were not crispy and the sauce was a bland fruit puree. If they made the wing crispy and added flavor to the sauce; amp the fruit flavor and add some chili to it it would have been awesome. The mini sliders were delicious. Customer Service-5 Originally I would have given this establishment 3 stars but our server was on point. Making sure our table was always taken care of and when asked how the food was we told him we loved the sliders but did not care for the wings so he took them off the tab. True Customer Service bumps it up a star. Definitely will come back to explore more on the menu. read more

I want to break this review down into a few categories as it is quite mixed. The place: cool ambience and decor. Love the spoon water fountain at the entrance and the open layout. However, our table was near the bar which is also the hotel check in counter so the dinner was punctuated with guests rolling in and checking in. A little distracting, but not a huge deal. The people: our server was friendly and informative. He knew the menu well. In contrast, there was a large staff congregated behind the bar and in other area of the restaurant. I saw folks on their cell phones, people eating and drinking behind the bar, and lots of personal banter which includes some expletives which we could hear at our table. I expect more from a restaurant with this price point. It looked like there was no front house manager. The food: good, but not amazing for the price. Nice presentation overall. I had the ravioli which only came with four pieces while my daughter has the cioppino which was very large. Other than that, all the other items we tasted were mediocre. The burger, salads, and the flourless chocolate cake were all boring and mundane to the taste buds. Service was a little bit on the *pushy* side. We barely finished our plate before a bus boy would ask, "Are you done? Are you done?" Hold your horses, cowboy. Let us enjoy our conversations. Dinner for 3 with one glass of wine was around $180 (tax and tip included). I would not be disappointed if this restaurant was in Los Altos, but it was not. After a day of wine tasting, we were looking forward to dinner at Spoonbar. The restaurant and bar is part of the H2 Hotel. The street front of the restaurant's sliding glass doors were open which gave it a wide open feeling. The front room has the bar on the left and a dining area on the right. We were seating in the back dining area, which has floor to ceiling windows to a back greenbelt area. Dining area is spacious with a modern décor. After ordering our drinks, we checked out menu and decided to order an item from the snacks, vegetables and mains. Snacks: Tempura soft shell crab with Kohlrabi sesame slaw, pickled mango. Tasty, wished for more crab. Lightly grilled Hamachi, nori infused rice, warm clam and soppressata vinaigrette. Hamachi was moist and complemented by the flavorful rice and vinaigrette. Vegetables: Marinated beets, basil oil, rhubarb ponzu, Chinese eggplant, shaved carrot. If you like beets, this was delicious dish. Chilled and marinated gem lettuce, horseradish vinaigrette, jicama, marinated leeks. Nice salad but felt that the vinaigrette was a little too tart. Mains: Lamb loin grilled over charcoal, braised morels and white beans, garlic shoots and olive oil. Lamb was perfectly cooked medium rare. Love the tasty morels and white beans. Beef slowly braised in yuzu and ras el hanout, green tomato and onion pickle, quinoa, assorted peas. The braised beef was so tender that you cut it with your fork and you are supposed to eat it with the quinoa. Beef alone was good enough for me. Dessert: Sweet pound cake and vanilla mousse with meringue, strawberry sorbet, macerated strawberries. Ice cream and sorbet flight. Absolutely impeccable. One of the best dinners of my life. My Grandparents most common complaint when eating out was always that it is no longer considered an 'evening' or event. They remembered when you would go to dinner, have a cocktail, appetizer, and so on and your dinner could last 2-3 hours of enjoyment and company. Now it seems more like in and out in a hour is the standard and while for a hectic lifestyle that generally works sometimes it is nice to slow down and truly have a meal event. Enter Spoonbar during Restaurant Week 2015. A cocktail to start. Ten perfect dishes. Cold wine. Amazing paced service with the emphasis on enjoyment, tasting the food, and digesting. Beautiful decor and comfort. This was an experience and one that I would like to have again and again. I am still thinking about the beets. BEETS PEOPLE! Two weeks later! The first night we stopped here, really, honestly we were in no shape to have another drink-- but it sure sounded good at the time! I have a vague memory of this bar (even after visiting it two nights in a row!) All the staff were very nice and willing to go out of there way to ensure you're enjoying your drink. In my drunken stupor, I seemed to have had a mental lapse, and thought I was on the beach side in Fort Laurderdale... He made me a fine mixed drink with vodka-- and because it was so obvious I didn't need it-- the bartender probably decided to make it on the weak side. My friend and I were having a conversation and out of no where I look at the bartender and ask "Can I get a floater?!" The bartender looked perplexed-- I was referring to the pina coladas or strawberry daquiris you can order with an extra shot of rum or alcohol floating on top (aka floaters.) I just had to share-- it was the funniest thing the bartender had probably heard all night and everyone at the bar was cracking up! And believe it or not-- I have no idea if I got the "floater" that I didn't need anyway-- which was perfectly fine with me! What I do remember is there was huge selection of alcohol to choose from-- what's your poison? They've probably got it. I also loved the bar area--it was super comfortable and quite easy to lose track of time in! The second night we were there-- the glass doors were open, allowing a breeze to come through which made it even nicer. I've been here for a couple of New Year's Eve celebrations, and this seemed like the time to write my review. I was just there this past NYE (when 2015 turned into 2016) and 2 year prior. A lot seems to have changed since then. First off- the good. The number of courses has expanded to 8 plus a starter. I also enjoyed the wine pairing. Each course had a distinct flavor and the wine only enhanced that as it should. The tuna course was simply astounding, a bigger serving that I usually see anywhere, let alone a tasting menu. The quality and flavor were also top notch. I also enjoyed the caviar tart. A few years ago, Spoonbar had a DJ in one part of the restaurant. Close enough you could return to your dinner table to give your heels a rest. But far enough it didn't take away from your meal. This year, that party had been scaled back considerably, and not for the better. It was basically a large room, with a few dozen people. The DJ seemed to be mailing it in, since it was all requests. Some crowds can handle a request-only playlist, by reading the room and catering to the crowd and mood. This crowd was apparently more suited for the end of a wedding playlist, i.e. stuff my Mom wouldn't even want to dance to. They also stopped serving drinks at 12:30, which I thought was a poor choice on NEW YEARS EVE. All in all, good food couldn't save a fairly disappointing NYE experience. It's a beautiful open air space and well thought out, so draws a cool crowd of people. I'll start with our server. He was fantastic and I wish I would have gotten his name. Nice gentleman with arm tattoos and a positive attitude. Mad props to him for making the experience so wonderful at lunch. Overall the food was pretty darn good. I didn't really understand the brothed octopus because it watered down the nicely prepared protein. The pasta however was reallllly good. Cooked to a perfect al dente and had a killer filling. We ended up taking a walk around downtown Healdsburg and were seated right away when we returned. They keep their doors open during the warmer months, which is great for fresh air, but it also means a lot of insects/bugs fly in. We had this huge bug next to our table and the bf had to kill it with the linen napkin. However, when we sat down with our friends, our server (same person) seemed stretched thin, and our food took FOREVER to come out. They also ran out of the kanpachi dish, which I thought was strange since we just ordered it less than an hour ago. The restaurant wasn't super busy at either time, so it was strange to have such a different experience with the service on the same day. In any case, my review is based for my initial lunch at Spoonbar, and I would highly recommend dining here. Parking can be difficult to find in this area, but free street parking is available, but I would recommend you come early to beat the rush. read more

What's especially notable about Spoon is the appetizers, salads, and dinner items are interestingly novel and complex, but not over-the-top ambitious nor pretentious. They're all similar to things I would make at home, but with a few extra twists of flavors and ingredients I wouldn't think of or probably wouldn't even attempt. Take the heirloom tomato salad for instance: deliciously fresh buratta, a fantastic herb cream, with tomatoes and plums (huh), a few sprouts, roasted pistachios, and (whoa) miso paste. Totally delicious combo! We also had insanely delicious ravioli filled with walnut honey cream in a light broth, topped with small bits of shredded roasted duck and some Parmesan foam. Really interesting; fantastic flavor and texture combos. Our main was perfectly prepared halibut and some fried brussels sprouts. I know there are many options in Healdsburg, but I would seriously consider going back to Spoon on a subsequent visit. There were a lot of other things on the menu I would like to try, and if they're anything like the items we chose on this first visit, we're in for a pleasant ride of culinary creativity and deliciousness. read more
