My review is mainly about the food. The atmosphere of Spoonbar is modern and sleek, the ambiance just ok. But the food! I found my new favorite cocktail to start with, The New East Side..so creative and delicious. I had a seafood platter of small bites of the most creative and flavorful raw fish I'd ever had. My husband had lamb two ways, I wish I could make it that perfectly! All in all, I was impressed at the chef's creativity and use of flavors, and appreciated the not too intrusive service. The bar is a favorite place for my husband and I to go to or to bring friends. All the cocktails are excellent and most are ones you won't find anywhere else. At times it can be hard to find a seat due to the popularity, but it is very worth the wait. The bartenders "taste" all the cocktails they make to be sure they are perfect. And if you don't like what is on the menu they will make a cocktail based on ingredients you want. The cocktails also change seasonally which is fun but also sad when a favorite won't be around again until next season. read more

We went here for dinner and we were really blown away by the fabulous service! Food was great as well and the cocktails were creative and delicious. We had the pretzel bread with herb butter, Thai beet fried egg roll sort of things, and sunchokes - all of which were excellent. I especially liked the herb butter and the Thai egg rolls. We ordered the beef dinner for two which had braised short rib, potatoes, mushroom and grilled ribeye with dandelion greens and green onions. The plating was done well, in a homey style that this type of beef deserved. The only part of this dish that I did not care for was the thick beef fat sauce/gravy that came with. It was a little overpowering for my taste. But, I'm not the most adventurous eater. Hubby loved it! We had a bunch of leftovers as the portion on the dinner for 2 was generous! This is for the BAR only! I have never dined in the restaurant. Hubby and I stopped in for an after dinner cocktail. The partially enclosed glass bar on the side of the restaurant is what caught our eye on the street with its glass bowls filled with fresh fruits, vegetables,herbs, and fresh edible flowers. Patrons drinks all looked totally creative and delicious with pieces of grapefruit in them, foams on top, you could tell there was some great Mixology and a great bar program in place here and they allowed our well behaved little dog to sit with us! My husband had a Manhattan and I ordered a spicy mezcal tequila drink which was absolutely delicious and I can't remember the name. Maybe spicy shrub? Anyway, they were lively that night but the two female bartenders could create pretty much anything you wanted they were so knowledgeable, friendly and talented. If we wouldn't have had a long drive home I would have stayed and had a couple more. Next time ! don't miss this place! read more

My fiance and I went to Preston's wine dinner last night at Spoonbar. We went because we have been long-time fans of Preston, but were pleasantly surprised by how great the food was and how pleasant their private dining room was. Especially for a large private dining party, the service was very friendly and attentive. There were a few mistakes--my waiter spilled some wine on the table and I have a goose egg where another waiter brained me with his elbow in the back of my head while clearing the table behind me. I realize, though, that serving big parties is stressful and overall the service was still very good. I was particularly impressed with the timing of the dishes, even for a group of about 50. We had: First Course: Cirtus-cured swordfish, cucumbers, shaved fennel, radish and lemon with beet foam Pairing: Preston 2010 Sauvignon Blanc This course was light and crisp and the sauvignon blanc had a salinity that was a seamless and interesting pairing. Second Course: California halibut ravioli, fava beans, fresh English peas, and basil Pairing: Preston 2009 Roussanne This course was remarkable. The pasta itself was fresh and perfectly cooked--tender but not mushy. The shredded halibut filling had a meatiness to it that I wouldn't normally expect from fish, and the flavor of halibut and the fava beans was perfect with the slight petrol flavor from the roussanne. Really excellent. Third Course: Roasted Sonoma duck breast with mustard greens, and spiced strawberry chutney Pairings: Preston 2009 Barbera; Preston 2009 GSM The skin on my duck breast could have been slightly crispier, but the strawberry chutney was a perfect pairing with the GSM was excellent. The mustard greens were fresh and flavorful and added a nice bitterness to the very sweet strawberry chutney. The barbera was a good wine, but did not really shine here, and seemed a little bit throw in. Fourth Course: Slow-cooked beef shortribs with horseradish potatoes and thumbalina carrots and artichoke Pairing: 2009 L. Preston The shortribs were perfectly cooked but they were too lean (grass fed maybe?). The artichoke was great, but the carrots boring. The cold potato salad didn't match well with the shortribs, and something warmer would have been better. The L. Preston was great and very nice with this warming dish. Dessert: Yogurt Berry Plate with Brown sugar meringues The meringues were airy with chewy centers and a wonderful brown sugar sweetness. The berries were fine but not excellent, with the exception of the raspberries which were delicious. Though a tasty dessert, something a little heavier, (maybe a foam cake?) would have been more satisfying. At a total price of $59, I thought this meal was an excellent deal. Most of the dishes were well executed, but the entire meal was a little low on carbs, so I left wanting just a little bit more. Even just some bread or rolls would have made a big difference. read more

First of all, I cant believe that I am giving such a bad review as I am very familliar with the people that work here. I am also not concerned that I will get black balled either as I wont be back. I live in the town and was horrified at the SERVICE.... After requesting a wine menu during the order I got through my salad and half of my dinner before I decided to go up to the bar and order myselft a drink. Not until then did the server decide I was needing help. I am not expecting excellent service just because I know some of the staff but wouldnt that be opportunity enough alone to try to upsell me. I dont want an empty glass... and would love for someone to ask how my dinner was. I am the biggest advocate of places I love and I will not be referring any of my clients there in the future. Drinks here are amazing, as all the reviews will tell you. Very creative and fun. The food is ok. We tried the following: --Gougeres-- yummy --Lavendar honey glazed chicken wings-- pretty good --Branzino with crispy Speatzle-- Just ok. The spaetzle was REALLY crunchy and there wasn't enough sauce for my taste. --My sister-in-law had the sweat-breads and she deemed them inedible. To the restaurants credit, they didn't charge her for the plate. Nice wine selection. We tried the Banshee Pinot Noir, which was nice to see on the menu and is delicious. Overall, the meal was just ok. I would stick to having drinks here and eat elsewhere in town. There are other restaurants that are MUCH better. read more

We had a few drinks here last night before heading off to a great dinner at Partake. It's a real treat for me who lives in the Conejo Valley of Southern California to experience real bartenders who take their craft seriously and create drinks with fresh ingredients and attention to detail. Where I'm from a Tom Collins is considered an exotic request! We were able to sample a very good dirty martini but my real favorite was a terrific rendition of a French 75 which Tara put together. It was terrific, cool and refreshing and passed the eye test with flying colors. Can't wait to come back and enjoy this bustling bar again soon. read more

I stopped in at the bar with two of my girlfriends at the beginning of the night. We're not from the area, but one of my friends had heard of the place and it's one of the nicer bars I've been to. The drink menu was really creative and had some delicious sounding drinks. My friends got the Dog's Tuxedo and the You've Lost that Loving Feeling cocktails which were both phenomenal and really elegantly presented. I was driving so I asked one of the bartenders to whip me up something nonalcoholic and he presented me with a beautifully crafted mocktail with a light citrus flavor with a blueberry garnish on top. I so wish I had taken pictures of our drinks, but it's safe to say that when I'm back in Healdsburg, Spoonbar is going to be my first stop. read more

The food was quite good, and the cocktails excellent, but I was really put off when the waiter said our entrees would take an hour to prepare, and we should therefore be sure and order snacks (their term for appetizers) to eat while we waited. Really? Kind of a crass up selling technique. Apparently the chef likes this approach, and sometimes even manages to get the food out a bit faster when patrons oblige. See Janet Z's review of her Thanksgiving dinner. We had the same meal. Minus one star for having a prix fixe menu after I called TWICE to confirm that we would be able to order off the regular menu. Had we known in advance, we would have chosen Dry Creek. Janet seemed to enjoy her meal a bit more than we did. The turkey wasn't good at all; we could've done without that plate completely. We felt that it all went downhill after the salmon. It took 15-minutes for our pre-dinner cocktails arrived, and we were seated at 3:45 - 15-minutes after the restaurant opened. This was our first time to spoon bar and we had a warm welcome and the food we found to be delicious. We had a variety of dishes. The octopus was crispy but tender and the roasted cauliflower ravioli melts in your mouth. We had the pan a cotta for dessert and it was amazing. We will definitely come back. I usually love Spoonbar so when I made a reservation on July 4th I just thought it was going to be a great experience like it usually is. So when we arrived the server informed us that there was a prefix menu at 60 per person? You would think that this detail would be addressed when I made a reservation but decided ok guess we are having a prefix. The prefix was a 3 course with take on a BBQ and the portions were massive and with no break in between to catch our breath. I had to ask the server the wait 5-10 minutes for the last course. The service was ok and felt everything was rushed and all the staff was ready to wrap it up. Felt feeling super full and disappointed! read more

Healdsburg needed Spoonbar - more than a little bit of an urbane upgrade from our local watering holes like HBG or Zeke's, a little more casual and a lot less expensive than cousin bar at Cyrus, and minus the attitude at Barn Diva. Still a pricey cocktail in absolute terms, but reasonable for what they are (super premium booze, freshly prepared garnishes and mixers). Decent flatbread apps to share, and the Cucumber Collins is hands down my favorite new drink. read more

Incredibly disappointing considering the "caliber" of this restaurant. The waiter was rude, unimpressive, and never cracked a smile during the entire meal. We literally felt as though we were "putting him out" by being seated in his section. When we asked him to describe some of the preparations for several entrees, he asked "Well, what do you want to know?" "Are you kidding me??? We had to wait way too long for our drinks to arrive, had to ask for the wine list, and had to ask for our wine to be put on ice. As for ambience, we weren't impressed with the fact that the people enjoying the pool had to traverse through the dining room to get to the bathrooms. I have been coming to Healdsburg for nearly 15 years and have dined at nearly every restaurant here at one time or another. This was the most disappointing dining experience I have ever had here. The appetizers and cocktails are very good; they certainly do take a lot of care with their cocktails. And their appetizers can be very good (their fried peppers, bread with three dips, and fries are especially good). But the service here, while friendly, is horrible. While you are offered a choice of free water, either plain or sparkling, our waitress made no effort to give us the same water with refills. And though we ordered cocktails and appetizers at the same time, our drinks arrived at least 10 minutes after our food did. The odd timing continued through dessert, when we received our espresso a full 1/2 hour before we received our desserts, though they were again ordered at the same time. There was no one to complain to as our waitress did not make a single appearance during the 1/2 wait for our desserts. She was not alone in offering poor service though. I saw another server misdirect another guest to the restrooms, seemingly unconcerned about giving accurate directions. Spoonbar has potential, but they really need to give their staff some basic training and work on their food and drink timing. For right now, if you limit your purchases to cocktails and appetizers and desserts, and are willing to put up with very bad, but friendly service, you can have a nice evening here. Hopefully things will improve with time. read more

We came to the Spoonbar after a fantastic bike ride through Sonoma's beautiful wine country. Nice to see a spot right outside where we could plant our bikes. The environment is open and spacious. The service was great. Our waiter was fun and his drink recommendations were excellent. I had the hanger steak with salad. The steak was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The head "mixologist" wouldn't fix a bland mojito because it's not part of his "philosophy", I'm sorry I thought I just paid you $60 for 4 drinks. Then he tells me gratuity is included because they are busy. ??? No way, don't go to this place, you don't need that kind of treatment when the drinks are lame and you're trying to enjoy the wine country. read more

Had a pleasant lunch at Spoonbar, with a knockout cocktail. The gnocchi was like cotton candy in its dissolvability and what I tried of my daughter's burger was bordering on cartwheel worthy. The waiters tried their best not to be smarmy but they were mostly tolerable. The Lion's Tail I had with my meal was nothing short of magnificent. If you don't feel like paying the prices for the meal, at least stop by the bar. read more

My wife and i had a four course dinner for two. That gave us each two choices of appetisers, one entree and one dessert. Of course, we each chose different items so we had a fantastic assortment of delights to taste. (And because the menues were quite limited, we probably tasted about a third of all the items offered.) What we found was, all of the dishes were quite tasty so it's hard to go wrong on choice. While I found the taste of one of the entrees not to be of my prerference, my wife loved it. We also found that the appetisers were as large as the entrees, so if you prefer the offerings on the appetiser menus, you can feel confident of getting plenty to eat. In fact, since my wife and I are light eaters and often order two salads and one entree to split, we decided the next time we go to the Spoonbar we will get plenty to eat if we order two appetisers and one dessert. In general the service was fantastic. Our (free) sparkling water never got below a half glass. The staff was always willing to (but never pushy about) removing dirty plates and silverware when it looked appropriate. The food service was timely -- no overlong waits. And the manager checked by several times. The only downside for us was that we came early (5:15) and apparently the experienced servers were not yet onboard. While the second-in-command who started us out was very personable, he was not quite up to the service and hospitability level of the regular waitstaff. So, would we go again? You bet! Cocktails were amazing (I had the sleeping beauty which had hints of cardamom!), and husband had the smoky local. So good. The started of crispy potatoes were yummy and nicely sauced, but nothing super special. He had the most delicious Orecchiette in boullion. It was full of flavor but still really light. The meatballs were moist and delicious. I had a less exciting Spaghettini, cauliflower, espelette, burnt onion dish. The cauliflower was non existent and it was really undersalted. A little salt helped, but I wouldn't recommend it. Overall, with the spaghettini as the outlier, the drinks and food were nice, service was really efficient, and the space itself is just gorgeous. Would recommend if in Healdsburg. read more

There are many charming places to eat in Healdsburg, but few as fun and energetic as Spoonbar. The bar (and restaurant) open onto downtown Healdsburg's main street, making the space more active and lively than most of the town's restaurants. As other reviewers note, its hard to go wrong with the specialty cocktails, especially after a day of tasting wine. The food and menu fit a welcome spot between the low end casual and 'event' dining spots in town. I was most recently there for the 4th of July BBQ event; if you are ever in that part of the world on the 4th its a great event - you can even see fireworks from the restaurant (or at least from the street out front). read more
