After our go to breakfast spot had a line out the door we decided to bust out the Yelp! iPhone app and see what other breakfast places were in the area. We decided to give the Spot Cafe a go after reading the decent reviews. The location is very small but we were lucky to only have to wait a few minutes for a table to open. The smell of the fresh cooked bread fills the place making your stomach grumble once you set foot in the door. The menu has breakfast and lunch items only since they are only open till 3. However the food we had was very flavorful and nicely prepared. I had the french toast and loaded home fries. The french toast was on special bread that really added to the dish. The couple next to us ordered chicken Caesar salads that looks amazing. It's nice to know that this place is close by and will remain on our breakfast food options list. read more

This café doesn't respect and treat customer equally! My husband and I walked in and waiting inside of the entrance for 5 min. Later, a man walked in. The owner prioritized the guy than us. She immediately offered him a window seat with sunshine spot. We were so pioff by her attitude that she was treating customer unfairly and made excuse that she assume the guy will finish his breakfast very soon! The husband is the chef, the wife makes the soups and serves customers and their son helps with tables too. They greeted us and treated us like family. Homemade baguettes. You're welcome. But in all seriousness, the Spot is a great cafe. All of the menu items are fresh and made to order. Their menu isn't too long, but just enough to give you different options. I like when restaurants have a simple menu because then everything can be fresher (less storage) and, like with the Spot - a smaller menu means they need to do everything right. You can't hide behind a small menu. The staff are super nice and the entire place is run by a family. You can tell this is a place for regulars - the staff even know some people's orders. My wife and I have gotten at different times; chicken salad sandwich on homemade baguette, baguette with fresh jam and butter, the spot home fries, yogurt parfait, and eggs. All are amazing. Also, I'm not a huge coffee person and I feel like a lot of restaurants and cafes all make the same thing and it all tastes the same, regardless of what you get. BUT not at the Spot! Good breakfast spots in the area are always packed and if you don't get out a bit earlier than most, you're guaranteed to be waiting for a table. We rolled up to The Spot at 8:30am on a Sunday, hardly any cars outside or soul in sight. Wasn't even sure it was open, even when we walked inside to an empty restaurant; only person eating at a table was a staff member. We're now proceeding with caution... My wife ordered the French toast with a side of potatoes and bacon. I ordered the Belgian waffle with strawberries and cream, side of potatoes and sausage. Both meals were not good. Not terrible, but far from good. The French toast was dipped in an egg batter void of any flavor and my waffle was a sponge. No crispness on the outside and when it arrived, it was hiding under a 1" blanket of whipped cream that had some strawberries mixed in - this only made my waffle even more soggy. Potatoes also had no flavor, but a healthy dose of ketchup fixed it up. Sausage and bacon were fine, as those were from a package, no doubt. The restaurant was quaint enough, but somewhat dirty and rundown. Food came on cheap plastic feeling plates, which moved around a ton as i tried to cut my food with the flimsy fork and dull knife. The staff...the redeeming quality of this place. Super nice, very friendly and attentive. If it were not for the staff, this would have been a one-star review. read more

Guess who decided she could eat whatever the hell she wanted for lunch today because she had just come from her final wedding dress fitting and it fit like a glove? Granted, my decision to "eat whatever I wanted" had limitation because I had to get back to work. There was no time for nacho's :( The Spot Caf is not exactly The Spot to be in, if you're in a rush. But, it's adorable and the food is amazing and fresh. I ordered the half sandwich & cup of soup combo, to go. When I got back to my desk I found I had a full sandwich - or maybe that's the size of their half but it was enormous! I indulged and got the equivalent of a grilled turkey Reuben (but it wasn't' called that). It was full of tender roasted turkey, sooo much gooey melted Monterey Jack cheese and dripping with Russian dressing. Oh. My. God. I ate the whole thing. Given the size of the sandwich I had no business eating the soup, but that didn't stop me. The fact that I seared off the top layer of my tongue because it was so hot didn't even stop me. Once it cooled down I enjoyed a lovely, tastes like mom makes, chicken & rice soup. So good. BOO! Came in here during the week and I was the ONLY patron in the restaurant. I walked here in the rain just for a cappuccino but since it was pouring I decided to get a meal and wait it out. The two men working seemed VERY frustrated that a customer was in the store- I even checked their hours to make sure I wasnt coming in right as they opened. It was 10am and they opened at 7, so I am not sure what their problem was. I tried to order a cappuccino but the "machine was broken" what a bummer! So, I ordered a coffee and a 2 egg meal. After about 3 mins, one of the men microwaved a cup of old coffee and brought it to my table. As the only person in the restaurant, I saw the whole thing happen. The cup was too hot to even touch he had microwaved it for so long. About a min later, I received an emergency call and had to leave. I didnt take a sip of the coffee and the food hasnt arrived, so I told the men I had to leave and apologized. The older man yelled at me, telling me I had to get it to go because he had already started the eggs. Really? Who gets eggs to go? And how much could that have really costed the restaurant? TWO EGGS? As you get more away from Boston and out into the 'burbs, you start to find more and more diners and breakfast spots. In Watertown and Waltham, it actually is possible to sit down and have a diner breakfast on the weekends without waiting too long in a line. Not here though... if you want in at the Spot, you're either up at the crack of dawn or waiting in line outside. There's a good reason; their French-influenced food is more Québécois than Continental in that it's hot, it's rich, and there's a lot of it. If that sounds good to you, you'll be in agreement with everyone else in line. The coffee i had here was spot-on excellent. I had the croissant omelette breakfast sandwich and it was a thing of beauty- even though it was hidden underneath a legitimately delicious buttery flaky croissant, the chef nailed it, getting the egg crispy-browned just right without getting crunchy. They let me swap out the pork-based breakfast meat option for sliced turkey and fried it on the grill to get it hot... no luncheon meat here, it was two big crispy slices of bird. Add melted jack cheese and... magic. The home fries are better than the Greek-standard all the other diners have, fried crispy on one side and touched with Herbs de Provence, but they're not quite Irish pub standard. The biggest gripe most people have is the size- they've only got six or seven two-up tables, hence the lines. But the two friendly matrons taking orders and moving plates are already taxed by this loading, so it's probably best to keep quality up and let the lines filter the patient from the noncommittal. I'm psyched because they open at 7AM on Sundays and are right across the street from the laundromat I use. What better reason to get your laundry chore done by 9 on a Sunday? read more

HaWe went on a Friday on our lunchbreak, in search of fluffy pancakes and some hangover food. It's a handy location- seems like there would always be a place to park. There are literally about 8 little tables in there, so I can see how on a weekend it might be a little crazy! THe server was nice, the restaurant is really cute, feels very homey. Not at all like a greasy diner where you sometimes don't want to eat off the silverwear (oh, there are alot of those..). I had the raspberry pancakes, they were SO GOOD. Huge, fluffy, maybe could have had a little more fruit inside, but it still worked because it wasn't overpowering. "S" had the Ziti in meat sauce. Clearly this is not an Italian restaurant, and the dish was not great. "B" had the prosciutto sandwich... came wtihout sides. It was good, hearty helping of prosciutto, but I didn't love the red peppers inside. "A"had the tomato and feta omelet made with egg whites, which looked really really good. The menu is pretty extensive for a little place, with breakfast and lunch served all day. We are definitely coming back again to try other menu items! read more

Every time I go here I find myself savoring every bite and licking my fingers long after I'm done. The food is amazing, the staff is kind and the location is very accessible. The only downsides (not enough of a downside to take away from stars though, so clearly not huge) it is a very small place and they don't provide receipts. Being a college student who often rolls through with many people at once we often find ourselves waiting outside a while dreaming of the food. The not having a listed receipt only affects us when we order a big to go order and can't easily split it up. Either way, this place is a tiny little must. Go. Eat. My husband and I hit this place this morning around 9:30am, decidedly long after the breakfast rush. When we arrived, the tables that were full were in the after eating chatting phases of their meals, and decidedly low maintenance, which is why I was surprised at the low-quality service. I ordered the cinnamon french toast with fresh fruit which was, overall, so-so. Adding $1.50 to french toast for a sprinkle of cinnamon, which I could barely taste, seems a bit much to me. The *really* tart strawberries were sliced and served on a separate plate that was larger than it needed to be, which struck me as really odd, not to mention the way it cluttered up our small table. I was hoping to taste a little bit more of the fabulous bread everyone raved about in my french toast, but it sorta struck me as starchy egg with a little bread in it. When I saw the assortment of teas, and a little caddy that contained one of each of the Numi teas they offer, I assumed that an order of tea was hot water and the little caddy. Or, at least, asking me which tea I wanted. I forgot a cardinal rule: never assume. I ordered tea, she didn't ask me what kind I wanted, and I got a pot of Lipton. Not wanting to make a fuss because I was half of the problem with the misunderstanding, I ordered a separate pot of tea later (a honeybush, which, incidentally, she asked if I wanted in the same pot and told me I wouldn't be able to taste if I did that in the same sentence). When she brought me the other tea, she didn't take away the first pot of tea, despite the fact that I told her it was empty when she asked if she could take it. More clutter on our very small table. I had a taste of my husband's raspberry pancakes, which were OK, though the raspberries were really tart, and the cake was a bit dry; some of my bites flaked off into two layers. It's a cute little place, but I expected slightly better service for off-peak breakfast. I won't rush out to go there again, although I'd go back and give them one last shot on their eggs before I wrote them off completely. If you're looking for a place to have a lazy, off-peak morning coffee with a friend where you won't be bothered, this might be your place. read more

Watertown is a place lacking in distinction. Most residents in the greater Boston metroplex area don't really know, or believe, it exists. Ask a person on any given day what he or she knows about Watertown and odds are you'll receive a blank stare, followed by that individual stammeringly admitting, "Oh, oh...oh yeah...I...I...I think I've driven through...or BY there...a bunch...maybe...but...yeah...I...I don't think I really ever GO there...or STOP...you know? There's a mall there...right? Or is that in Waltham? I don't know." People run through this place as quickly as the Charles River does. Even it only coyly peeks out at anyone driving by the body of water that gives this place its namesake. It's a place lost to most people. Well nuts to them for not slowing down and taking it all in, because they miss out on this gem of a cafe. The Spot is a cozy, little place on Main St. in Watertown, and a welcome respite from the bars, corporate coffee shops, and low end delis that use questionable lunch meats on rolls of dubious origins. Everything in The Spot is fresh, rich, and damn good. My favorite is the Breakfast Omelet Sandwich and an iced coffee, but the omelets themselves, or the pancakes, or even just a simple ciabatta with jam are to die for in this homey joint. Eating here reminds me of the cafes I used to frequent in Belgium, and even ones in Eastern Europe. Its charm comes the quality of the food, and the friendliness of the staff. I can easily get lost in fond remembrances of the times I walked in European central squares and sat for hours at coffeehouses and cafes like this one. Sure there's a work-a-day world bustling outside on the streets of Watertown, but it's easy to forget for a short time in this portal to another place where time seems to stop and reverie flows as free of care as the Charles River does. Those suckers who drive THROUGH, or BY Watertown can keep going to their destinations, but for those of us who are in the know, we've already found The Spot. read more

Breakfast rocks. There is nothing like a hearty morning meal after a night of indulging in adult libations. Breakfast is the one meal that I have specific needs (otherwise I'll eat pretty much whatever you put in front of me) and the one meal that you'd better not screw up. Bad breakfast sucks. The Spot Cafe has made breakfast interesting again. They offer unusual dishes like a grilled baguette with jam and a pastrami omelet. The bread is amazing. The breakfast sandwiches are served on a yummy roll. The cheesy homefries with onions sour cream are a bit over the top for my tastes but are a big hit with others. They also offer your standard breakfast items, all at a reasonable price. The staff is very friendly but at times seem like they don't really know what's going on. Especially the kids (like 12 year-olds) that run the food. They basically come out into the dining room with a plate of food and look around until someone recognizes their meal and waves them over. The Spot Cafe is very small so be prepared to wait for a table. They do accommodate waiting parties as best they can by moving tables around, but there is only so much they can do. read more

We still dream about this place. The breakfast's were always consistent and brilliant. The coffee was ALWAYS perfect. The toast & strawberry jam were memorable. We have tried it all french toast, eggs, croissant, etc... We live in California now and miss our Sunday morning staple when we lived in Watertown. Its super small so I would plan on waiting for a table and realize that this place is small, so you need to be okay sitting practically on top of your next table. We drove past In a Pickle in Waltham and said "no thanks" to waiting outside with 25 other eager brunch-goers and decided to head to our Plan B - Cafe Mirror in Brighton. Along the way we passed Spot Cafe and after quickly checking the Yelp reviews on my blackberry we decided to give it a shot. The place looks small on the outside and feels even smaller on the inside, but there is a very nice ambiance that reminds you of a French countryside. There can't be more than 8-10 tables inside, but the waitresses are extremely friendly and attentive and they seemed to know a lot of the patrons by name. There is no gluten free menu, but the waitress and kitchen staff were aware of the allergy and offered to make my wife's omelet in a separate pan off the grill that is used for pancakes and other glutenous treats. They weren't positive the home fries were gluten free, but they substituted a nice fresh little fruit cup. The egg sandwich on the breakfast roll was delicious, the fruit cup was a nice treat, and the omelet included fresh almost gourmet vegetables compared to a cheap diner. We'll definitely be back and if you drive by and don't see a line out the door I would highly recommend stopping in. read more

Quaint and delightful and absolutely delicious! This little, unassuming place knows how to pack in the customers on a Sunday morning. Big time. Portions are generous, the coffee is dark and smooth, and the food is prepared with care. The menu is packed with all the classics--but the food doesn't taste commonplace. My one gripe is that this place is definitely on the cramped side--and because they do such a good weekend breakfast business, you don't really feel like you can linger over a cup of coffee and conversation. Spot Cafe is a small 10 table breakfast place on Main Street in Watertown. It is over-decorated with French photos and cluttered with trinkets and teapots. Teapots everywhere. We went during prime brunch hours on a Sunday and didn't have to wait very long which was nice. The service was quite poor. Our waitress was very forgetful as I had to ask for sugar three times and water twice. Overall the food was decent. Pancakes and omelette were good, but the bacon was way over cooked. The prices were decent and the French flair is something unique, but in a town with multiple excellent brunch places, Spot Cafe does not stand out from the crowd. read more

Nice place, good food, very friendly. It's a little cramped and you might end up bumping elbows with the guy at the next table, but some might call that "cozy." The breakfast menu is really good, I especially like Mario's Breakfast Sandwich. I don't know who Mario is, but it's a damned good sandwich loaded with pastrami, eggs, and cheese. They also make very tasty pancakes and excellent coffee (it's hard to find good coffee in the Boston area, most people have been ruined by that garbage they serve at Dunkin'). I was just slightly disappointed by their tea offerings, the tea they serve isn't bad but at a place where the walls are all decorated with tea pot sets (all for sale, btw) you'd expect them to take tea VERY seriously and serve strictly the best loose tea, rather than disposable tea bags. But I'm an admitted tea snob, most customers probably won't be as critical as I'm being. Their fresh bread is great. I usually bring home a baguette after finishing my breakfast. I've never had lunch here, but I'm sure it's probably as good as the breakfast. Having had their fresh bread, I know what they're serving the sandwiches on must be really good. Everything here was pretty enjoyable. And the service was also a plus! It is a very small and cozy environment, I think perfect for a date. I tried the blueberry pancake with home fries and sausage and the gf tried the veggie omlett with homefries and toast. The homefries were pretty good, not too soggy or oily. I generally don't like sweets but the pancake was very good. So soft and flaky and light it actually felt healthy haha. The sausage was meh, I am a sucker for the super big ones that I get from a few diners in NJ/NY so -1 for that; it also tasted taste unfortunately healthy as well. The best part was the toast. They don't give you none of that bootleg sliced bread from the supermarket. They give you some nice tasty, what i think is probably home made, french crusty bread. yum. Not a bad place. Tresca still beats it... but only because of technicalities...they are pretty even overall. Spot Cafe is a place that we found when we were considering going all the way to Old Country Buffet. The place is tiny. They have enough to sit about 12-14 people. My girlfriend had waffles (which tresca doesn't) and you can pay with Credit Card (another of Tresca's downfalls). Otherwise... There bagel sandwich was okay. I think I liked Tresca's a bit more because it is not an omelet on your bagel but eggs. It was still a tasty sandwich. You also get homefries with Tresca's (which both of them are meh in the homefries department) for the same price. We also got a piece of raspberry crumb cake. I didn't like it, but that's only because I'm not a fan of raspberry. Girlfriend loved it, that's more important. Girlfriend loves the wide variety of teas, and they have a good selection of muffins, they also bake there bread. These thing cause it to blow the other places out of the water. This place will continue to get our business other then Tresca, and it is sure fire #2 (but barely, we are talking like probably about .3% difference). read more

My husband and I were doing laundry across the street during lunchtime and decided to come over when we got an attack of the hungriness. The place is very homey, very nice collection of teapots and teacups. Very nice service and the food was sooooooo yummy! My husband had the Mario omelette sandwich in a croissant and I had the breakfast omelette with cheddar cheese and bacon. Food came quick and both sandwiches were a lot bigger than we expect it for the price ($5.50 for a breakfast sandwich, say what's?). And both were incredibly good. I also had a corn muffin on the grill, because I can't never go eat out without adding something sweet and that was very yummy too. This place creates a very tasty omlette! Seating is limited but they do their best to provide food quickly and rotate through tables. The atmosphere is cute, there are little teacups and teapots around for decoration. Don't be fooled when your food comes out on a melamine/plastic dish, it will still be delicious! They also have a great selection of Numi teas, I think we spent more on our drinks than the food. I had a lovely meal here this morning. I left Central Rock Gym feeling STARVING and Yelp told me to come here, just a few minutes from the gym. It's a nice small cafe with a warm feeling of home. They were busy and only had one server working the room but I wasn't in a rush. I went for the omelet sandwich with a side of home fries. It was HUGE and awesome! The croissant was buttery, flakey and perfect. The omelet was enormous and stretched out past the sides. I had both bacon and sausage in it, the sausage in particular had excellent flavor. The home fries were great, with a portion so big that I took the extras home for my pup. The one woman working the room was friendly and did a great job balancing all of her responsibilities.
