The Spotted Dog Cafe doesn't resemble much of a cafe. It's actually one of the swankier and more upscale restaurants in Springdale. You can imagine there aren't very many fancy restaurants in this area since visitors of this small town aren't necessarily high-end diners. They're more like rugged hikers and outdoor enthusiasts ready to take on Zion. The food at Spotted Dog is standard but I'm handing them an extra star for their convenient location, impressive views of Zion's soaring cliffs, and the aforementioned spiffy setting/ambiance. After a long and vigorous day of hiking in Zion, my partner and I were exhausted, ravished, and feeling celebratory over our successful day of exploring the park. We decided to have a nice dinner at Spotted Dog. We hopped off the free shuttle at the Flanigans stop (the hotel that owns the cafe) and requested for a table outside on the patio. The inside of the restaurant is cozy with art-filled dining rooms and a full bar. It's quite romantic and elegant. However, if weather permits, opt for outdoor seating. You must! The views totally justify the pricey dishes. We had the hummus with pita bread to start. The hummus was made with chickpeas, tahini, lemon, and garlic. It tasted rather plain and the pita bread was too doughy. I ordered the Cedar Mountain Style Lamb Shank which came with mashed potatoes. The lamb was huge! Although it was slow braised, the meat was too dry. It wasn't succulent or flavorful. The lamb was also drenched in a brown gravy that went better with the potatoes than the main item. To my disappointment, the sauce ran out quickly so my lamb lost the only thing keeping it moist. My boyfriend opted for the Southwest Flat Iron Steak with Parmesan Truffle Fries. The steak was topped with a tangy and zesty avocado mango salsa. He enjoyed it and I liked the fries. We had some beers as well because no celebration is complete without some brews! The meals are on the expensive side, but like I said, the views of Zion are worth it. Plus, if you're looking for a special dining spot, the Spotted Dog is a solid choice (see what I did there?). Delicious food and wonderful service. Because of this we went there twice while visiting Zion! Jeffery at the bar was super kind and gave us the insiders guide to the Zion area. Libby was just as wonderful the next night. Food was reasonably priced for the area and what you get. We got the tomato bisque soup (4 stars), the ahi tuna app (5 stars), wild game meatloaf (5 stars) and New York strip steak (5 stars). And you can't beat the location and view! Ski lodge type feel with neat art on the walls . High ceilinged, wiith tall windows that brought the outdoors in. Three of us had the seared ahi tuna (this was the biggest block of seared ahi tuna I have ever seen - a rubik's cube sized pink tender chunk) sitting on fried onion strings and wasabi whipped mashed potatoes (a little kick) with 5 brussel sprouts surrounded by yam sauce. Yummy! Seafood fettucini looked good, fried trout covered with pumpkin seeds? was unique and tasty. Forgot to pull a menu klepto, so don't know the name of the pretty chocolately mousse thingy we had, which was gone in an instant. Someone recommended this spot to us and they were amazing as well as the food was great. They made a special meal for my daughter that was gluten free, dairy free, nut free. Our server Anna was so nice, knowledgeable and also willing to check with the chef to be sure we were served a safe meal. The menu is clearly marked with GF and vegetarian labels as well. I don't think I've been to such a fabulous restaurant in quiet a while. They were communicative about how long the wait was for a table and for the food. Freddy was our fabulous, patient, attentive server. I ordered the pear and ricotta cheese pouch purses and it was soooo good. It was flavorful and sweet and just wow. My mom had the red snapper which she said was fabulous that she literally finished her entire plate, which is a very big deal for her. When we asked for the check Freddy came over and just did the check right there, patiently waiting for my mom to look over what we ordered. The manager came around and asked everyone how they were doing, which I admire that he took the time to do that. We had a beautiful view of the sunset of Zion. One of those small town places with the 18% racist forced gratuity. So turns out in their menu they put a fine print where they can spontaneously decide to slap a 18% gratuity on your bill. They did that to us. We got in way before dinner started (5pm), the restaurant was empty. The hostess was extremely hostile and didn't really want to seat us because we didn't have a reservation. She then proceeded to sit us at a terrible table and no where nice even though we asked about the empty tables (and those never filled up). Waitress (Amanda - check out her other bad reviews) had the typical "I do not want to serve you" attitude and we were wondering why. So as expected, we were just going to not tip them that much. However, the bill came and we were sick to our stomach when they slapped the 18% gratuity on our bill. We didn't have the menu to refer to so we thought it might be mandatory, hence the bad service. But we checked on the menu outside (look at our photo) and it wasn't mandatory (we had 5 ppl). Both were excellent! My pesto was fresh made .... you could taste the FRESH Basil in the pesto.... so good... had not had that good of a pesto since we were in Cinque Terre in Italy a few months ago.... The hubby's trout was light and not overly fishy so it's a great local treat. We splurged and ordered dessert.... a lemon tart-like cake. Called in 3 minutes before we came and were told the wait was going to be 20-30 minutes as they were closing in 30 and we weren't seated until close to an hour later, so just as precaution if you're going to eat here and expect to leave on time to wake up early for a hike, just be prepped you could be there much longer than expected. Food was pretty standard. Best thing on the menu was a special they had that day, the Shrimp Pasta w/ a white cream sauce. Burger was standard. The Pasta Purses was pretty good. What a wonderful experience after a long hike through the Narrows. We spent a couple of days to visit Zion and stayed in the quaint, beautiful, welcoming town of Springdale. We've heard about the restaurant and decided to treated ourselves the last full day spent there. We wanted dinner and since the patio was warm and inviting, there was a brief wait for our party of two. We noticed the table cloth and the beautiful color inside the restaurant, and was pleasantly surprised to see that not only was good for date nights but also good for families. After a couple of minutes, our table outside was ready. Libby greeted us and told us about the Halibut as the special for the night. We decided to order off the menu with the trout as an appetizer, meatloaf and short ribs as entrees. There was a very nice wine list but opted for a cocktail and local beer instead. The service was very good, everyone, from our server to the food runner to the busser to the manager were very attentive. Gustavo and Jerry were very friendly and engaging, of course our server, Libby, was warm, friendly, and had wonderful knowledge on the menu, The Spotted Dog Cafe is more than just a cafe, it's casual fine dining minus the pretentiousness yet maintain all the necessary steps of service. It's definitely a wonderful stop to visit and we will definitely be back. This place is the best restaurant of all in Springdale. The best service, excellent dishes, and a warm environment- with epic views of the canyon! I came here for both the breakfast buffet and for a few dinners and each time I was very satisfied by the experience. Tried the steak with bordelaise sauce, the pumpkin seed grilled trout, the pasta napoleon, pasta pomodora, and the pasta al pesto. Each of them had great flavors! But I'm the biggest fan of the pasta napoleon and the pumpkin seed encrusted trout. We also tried the artichoke special of the day and the tomato bisque soup. We wanted a nice place to eat and hiking and drive around Zion and pulled up here since the name of the place stood out and it was 5 minutes outside the park. Came here on a Saturday night around 7ish and got seated right away for just the both of us. Larger parties were waiting for tables to open up. We got seated by the window overlooking the sun setting on the canyons for a nice shot. Our waiter was friendly and prompt to offer up some water. Also, we received some flat bread with a smoked red pepper/tomato based spread and I won't lie, both us gobbled that up quickly! Our neighboring table was complaining about the sauce, but we enjoyed it. To each their own. Menu isn't that big but it comes every form of meat out there, along with salad and pastas , but in regards to big menu, that's where the booze comes in. We opted not to order any liquor, but I'm sure if were in the mood for it, we could have found something nice to drink from the wine menu. I opted for the Meatloaf while the Conn man went for the pesto with chicken. Meatloaf consisted of elk, venison and beef mixture atop mashed potatoes with sides of carrots and broccolini. I checked the other reviews of the meatloaf here, and I thought the meatloaf was tasty and my entree was not doused in any bbq sauce as other claimed. In fact, all that was atop the meatloaf was a simple glaze with shallots. The mashed potatoes were room temperature underneath the meatloaf, but that's not a killer for me. Overall, I'd give the dish a 3.5 out of 5 for taste, portion and price wise. The Conn man got pesto pasta with chicken. Fresh pesto is the best, and this place got it down perfectly with an extra hint of lemon in it to really bring out the flavor. This entree was deceptive as it comes out an oversized bowl, but there's a hefty portion to it. This, I would give a 3.75 out of 5. Getting the check here is a feat as staff is running around and our waiter forgot twice that we requested our bill. While waiting, you're provided a nice sweet treat a chocolate minted stick--- combo of a pocky stick covered with Andes mint chocolate. Nice finisher. We had zero room for dessert, but we kept hearing the waiters provide details of the options. Overall, for being near a national park, food ain't bad, nor are the prices. Casual dining that meets the baseline. We must have lucked out as our food was good and received good service. Cozy spot to eat and relax after a day at the park. read more

We were neither, she stared at us like we were aliens, and gave us the bad table for 4. We sat for a moment and if a nicer table might be available and what do you know, there was one for two ready. Let me put it this way: A diner at a neighboring table asked my husband and I after we sat down and chatted a bit if we'd tried Oscar's yet, and then assured us it was delicious. This implied to us that it is better than the restaurant where we were eating. And let me tell you, it is. We dined on the earlier side, at 5:30 on a weeknight so we could get up early for a hike the next day. There were four seated tables in the very large restaurant, which has white table cloths, several timid waiters waiting in the wings, and awful pop music playing. The smoked fish dish was fine, but somewhat tough and lacking in flavor. The ginger carrot soup lacked much zing, though it was drinkable. The meatloaf and veggie burger were also both highly forgettable and lacking in flavor. Considering that our meal cost us over $60, and we had nothing to drink, I'd say that it was pricey considering the mediocre quality. I'm confident that the relatively high rating on Yelp reflects only the fact that Springdale dining options are not that impressive. read more

We came here for breakfast and were immediately met with the protocol of needing to order and pay up front. Tipping the regular amount doesn't make sense because you have to collect your own food and drinks. (I was told this after I tipped a good amount.) The "cafe" doesn't have public wifi... weird for typical cafes. They're also not open for lunch... needless to say we were very confused. The food was okay. Definitely took a minute considering we were the only people there. This place isn't too bad, but I definitely wouldn't visit it again. There are better places around.
