This was my first time here at a friend's invite. Every so often the stars align and every moment in sequential perfection reveals itself to you in a delightful way. It was 7pm on a Saturday. Should be crowded for the wave of first service. No reservation, no problem. Got a table right away. The attention from the busboy, to the server, to the owner stuck the landing all the way. The food was spectacular with every dish asking for my attention because it could. When you tell me the special is a mushroom risotto but you wait until it's delivered to shave black truffle on the mandolin in excess, that's going to leave a mark. And when the Chianti in my glass is empty and you do me a solid by giving Daddy more...Child,please. What an amazing experience both culinarily and customer service wise. The food is great if you are given the time to enjoy it! I arrived on a Friday evening, this evening, a single woman, sat at the bar at 8:38 p.m. I was handed a 6-page menu/wine list and 3 minutes later, "What would you like, we closed the kitchen at 9:00 pm intense and in a rushed voice. I am frantically focusing on the entire menu. "2 minutes later-What can I get it for you? The kitchen is about to close at 8:45...I am debating between two items so he walks away to deliver food. fair enough. But now the mood is not at all what I wanted to experience after a 75-hour work week. I need a minute to breathe but not here. I order, hesitantly. He doesn't care about a rat's ass what I am trying to combine. He places the order. Brings the food, and the server/bartender lets me know its last call in 5 minutes8:55, I am having a lovely conversation with a neighbor at the bar, but now I have to focus on eating quickly because I'm now told the kitchen and restaurant closes in 10 minutes. How is that for a full salad, grilled salmon, and pasta... by the time I ask for another glass of wine to complete my meal, I am told NO, we are closed! read more

Hadn't been here in an long time and they've changed a bunch. Decor is better, but prices up. The bread was great, nice and warm with a good olive tapenade. Had a caesar salad that was very good. Small portion is sizeable too, nice heavy anchovie. Also had some decent dishes. I had a home made pasta with ground pepper, parmesan and a nice thick pasta. Fresh Bread (4/5) and an Olive Spread were brought to the table. I liked the warm bread twist more than most free breads. We kicked things off with a Veggie Tower & Proscuitto Appetizer (2/5) with layers of sliced Tomatoes, Eggplant, Mozzarella, roasted Red Peppers, and Parma Proscuitto on a bed of Mixed Greens. It's kind of like a tall salad. The salty meat, depressed dressing, and pre-ripe tomato left me wanting more ... more of something else. Olivia with Fettuccine Gamberi Porcini E Carciofi (Shrimp & Mushroom Fettuccine) (3/5) for her entree. I liked the Porcini Mushrooms, texture of the pasta noodles, Artichokes, and Truffle Oil, but the Shrimp seemed an afterthought. My main dish was Ravioli D'aragosta (Lobster Ravioli) (2/5) and it was the biggest disappointment. The Saffron Cream Sauce sounded much creamer and vibrant than it was. The Lobster Meat Ravioli with Zucchini Julienne was just as dull. Our waiter was quick and efficient. He offered suggestions and seemed on this game. For Pizza delivery in/around Montana Ave in the Santa Monica area...this has been my 'go to' place for years. It's not amazing, but when you don't want the standard pizza delivery places...this is, and has been, my favorite choice. Last night, unbelievably, was the first time I've ever eaten on-site at this location. It's rather small and intimate, seating about 30 inside, and 20 outside on the street-side, providing 2 totally different kinds of experiences: ** Inside, it's really busy, lots of hustling and bustling, with the activity of the kitchen, wait stations, and 'to go' packaging of leftovers. The tables are quite close together, and sit near the people next to you. The energy is good. ** Outside, a great option for any outdoor seating in lovely Santa Monica's Montana avenue...a bit more quiet with less activity. As the norm for my delivery orders, I had the Della Casa pizza: Pepperoni, Sausage, Mushrooms, Onions, Bell Peppers, Tomato Sauce & Mozzarella Cheese. The ingredients are fresh, good quality, and amble atop. But honestly, it's really not the best. The crust is medium thick, with a large amount of empty edges. The sauce is semisweet, and even though there is meat on this pizza, I actually added a little salt -- too bland. My takeaways from this dining experience: 1) I realized I was nearly the only person eating pizza! Everyone else in my field of vision ordered pastas and salads -- and they all looked excellent, and the people appeared to be happy. 2) The service is friendly, but not overly attentive. Also, they always appear rushed. 3) I also find it an interesting case study for Italian dining. Directly across the street are two other Italian restaurants. As Spumoni is absolutely packed, the nicer, white-tableclothed fine-dining place had 3 people inside, and the other, a catering/cafe-version of a good chain Italian restaurant, had just a handful of folks, too. The lesson, for this nice, beachy, and upscale area -- casual dining will bring most success, as does yet another restaurant Rosti, just down the street. 4) It's a great local place, but not somewhere you would travel miles for. read more

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go to / order from this restaurant. The manager is rude, yelled at my husband, PROMISED to refund our payment and NEVER DID!!!!! My husband arrived to pick up our order and the manager told him it was already picked up. My husband said impossible since I just got here. Manager proceeded to yell at my husband (literally YELL because I was on the phone w my husband and heard it all). After an incredible hassle, the manager (still rude and yelling) said he would refund our meal. NEVER DID. I just put a block on our credit card payment -- more out of principle than anything else. There's a reason this place survived a fire that closed them for over a year, and now a pandemic. The Food, and the Service are Excellent. I've been going there again the past few weeks with my girl friend. If you get there early there's usually no wait. The seating outside is terrific. they were one of the first places on Montana to build an outdoor pergola for dining. Seating is well spaced. Their Calamari Affogati is sensational. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. The bus boys don't hover around your table trying to clear plates, until you have Both finished. The Tiramisu is the best. We enjoyed it so much we started having breakfast there as well. Delicious cappuccino, the Montana breakfast is great.. Just know they don't make pancakes. I really like Spumoni on Montana. We went last night and I had super yummy Pollo Limone with Capers. The portions are very generous and the leftovers were easily enough for today's lunch. I like the service, and the FEELING of the place. Great little intimate-restaurant vibe. I love the clean glass windows taking up the entire front wall, giving me a great view of the street and passer-bys. I like how at 9pm when a couple walks in a closing time.. they accommodated them with a smile. And they seem to have no problem pouring a nice sized glass of wine. ;P read more

This place is smack dab in the middle mediocre, which can be good sometimes! The service is super attentive, American-style, where at least 2 different people ask you if you want water, are ready to order, fill in the blank here, within minutes of each other and they clear your plates immediately. I imagine that could be good for larger groups, or people with families/kids. Oh yeah, and the olive tapenade in olive oil and bread that they serve in the beginning is delicious, maybe the best part of the meal for me. For me the food was so-so but my spouse liked it a lot. I got the sole fish and he got the breaded chicken which he liked a lot. The environment was good, not too crowded and good seating options. Overall, a solid place to get a decent meal in the neighborhood with friends or family. I think we may be going back to try out some other dishes! I'd recommend checking it out! read more

Came here today on the spur and lunch was amazing. Staff was very courteous and attentive. The bread was to die for and pairs perfectly with the delicious tapenade. The pesto linguine was also very flavorful. If the artichoke would have been fresh, then it would have been over five stars, but over all it was a perfect lunch. read more

This is my favorite little neighborhood spot. Be warned, the bread is so good it's hard to save room for the actual dinner. The calamari is cooked perfectly and the pasta dish with bolognese sauce is incredible, as are the meatballs. The gnocchi is some of the best I've had (4 cheese is my favorite) and don't even get me started on the cannoli. The portions are extremely generous and at lunch they have a wonderful $10 special for a half portion of pasta and a soup or salad. Their house wines are great as well. We went to Spumoni to celebrate our children's recital. The room was unpleasant with a draft of cold air causing our party of 5 to be cold before the dinner even arrived. The service took a long time, which was a bit disappointing. However, the worst was that the the NY steak was the poorest bottom of the barrel quality of beef. Pretty sure it was not even choice beef given its lack of any flavor, and toughness, and it was less than 1/2 inch in thickness. This mediocre & thin piece of beef cost $32?!?!? Service was slow, and they served the adults before the kids (9 and under). What were they thinking?????? In the past they always made it a point to get the kid food out ASAP. This used to be our neighborhood go-to restaurant. No more. BTW The cheapest pasta dish is now $21.50 and up to $28, compared to mid teens very long ago. This restaurant used to be great for the family, now the prices are for a high end restaurant, when the food and service are for a below average restaurant. We used to go to Spumoni a lot before they closed down for renovations. We went back to try it out. It was unfortunately very disappointing. We arrived at 928pm (restaurant closes at 10pm) on a Saturday evening 12/14/19. They had about 4 tables and a busboy had already started stacking chairs. When we entered we asked the girl working for a table for two. She was clearly upset and said " sit wherever you want but you need to order fast because we are cleaning the kitchen tonight and they are closing in a few minutes". We sat and she started cleaning menus and slamming them down on the table. We both stared at her confused until a server came up to us and told us we needed to order in three minutes without giving us menus. A bus boy then gave us bread and two menus. The only thing the staff thought about was closing and going home. Shameful and pathetic service. The vibe of the restaurant was so negative that we got up and left. I was so sad because Spumonis used to be my go to place back in the days. I used to go for lunch and dinner and loved the food. The service was great before. With outdoor dine-ins these days due to COVID restrictions, I'm quite pleased knowing that they have atleast accommodated their front patio for customers. I came in here before and had a good first impression, waiting staff are attentive and gives you that privacy whilst eating rather than being constantly asked if there's anything else you need. As per usual, they do served their entree on big platters which was good size and worth the price. However, this time I wasn't so impressed with the taste. I ordered their pan-fried sole fish and didn't really quite liked it. It was watery, mushy and smelt a bit off (it needs to wash thoroughly with lots of lemons) to take that fishy smell off.
