Found another favourite place for lunch in Long Beach! Discovered the place because I have an appointment of work right opposite to it... A little restaurant in the middle of a residential area... Attracted by the outlook so gave it a try... Ordered a Blue Crab Cake and egg, taste SO GOOD... the crab cakes taste even better than some fancy restaurants by the shoreline... The potato is fresh and tasty too. The ice tea they served has a very mild taste of orange I wish I can come back next time while I am not on duty, so I can try their cocktails.... read more

First of all let me start out by saying their food is good. Not great but good. I got there French toast which is definitely better than an average diners French toast. There was a little wait but not too bad of one. My friends ordered the chorizo eggs and a chicken melt. They both enjoyed their food and said it was good. Our server was very nice. The food is pretty overpriced for what they give you (not all of it though). We ordered a side of fruit for $4 and got ONE sliced up strawberry and about 6 blueberries in one of those small bowls that syrup or butter is usually served in. Also another downside was there were bugs in our waters, so if you do get water be sure to look at the bottom for bugs. They looked like aphids. Besides that the food was pretty good. I personally wouldn't recommend because I don't like having bugs in my drink which ruined the experience for me. read more

A hidden gem! Starling Diner has something for everyone and they have such great service. I highly recommend their breakfast bruschetta, which was served sweet and was surprisingly delicious! It was perfect for sharing. I love that their plates are not too big of portions and are just the right amount so you don't feel overstuffed. Can't wait to come back! read more

This is the one place I can go to and order something different from the menu each time and always make the right decision!!!! I have been coming here for YEARS and it continues to be one of my absolute favorite breakfast spots. THE FRENCH TOAST. It's to die for. You have to get these every time. The crab cakes with poached eggs are unreal. The pork scramble is also a great choice. Their bacon is thick & crispy. And lastly....take some scones to go. You will not be disappointed. read more

Cute little place located in a residential neighborhood. You can spot the place by its yellow umbrella. They were known for their "best French toast." My boyfriend ordered the French toast wth berries. I'd have to say that it's pretty good but I wouldn't say it was the best ever. It's different than other French toast in that they use baguettes instead of the traditional square shaped toast. The fruit was very fresh and whipped cream was full fat just as expected. I ordered the tofu and veggie scrambled eggs. We ordered food to go because there were so many people waiting for a seat. This place is like a typical place you can find in Pasadena. Cute decor, your typical American style breakfast with the mimosa options, scrambled eggs, and French toast. read more

This little spot is so charming! I visited for brunch with my hunny and we opted for the Stuffed French Toast with Carmelized Apples in Brandy Butter and the Daily Scramble with Pork Chorizo and Chiles (this was a special). Both were delicious! The French toast was so light and perfect and the chorizo scramble was savory and filling. Their lattes are great too. Can't wait to return! read more

Whoa--10/10 for the Starling Diner. Either my day-to-day life is filled with a lot of selfish, angry people or this place has the friendliest group of service-oriented employees I've ever seen. It was such a breath of fresh air to be treated so kindly and made the experience all the better. The food was delicious! I would highly recommend the scones to accompany whatever dish you wind up choosing (you can't go wrong) and the hot chocolates were a solid starter choice, as well. 5 stars for the scones! Holy Toledo - have to post my disclaimer - Had never met a scone I liked before. They were usually hard and pretty unappetizing texture for me. But not these,.. Maybe it's that double cream they use ? Soft, slightly crumbly, delicious with the orange butter and the lemon curd. They didn't skimp on the condiments either. Really yummy. read more

We arrived right at 8am on Friday morning and within 30 minutes, the place was packed. Good thing we were up early. I heard the french toast is their speciality and I decided to go with the seasonal peach version. The peaches were the type that come out of a can and were a bit underwhelming. I loved the "stuffed" aspect of the french toast although I'm not sure I like the use of the baguette. I also paid $5 to order a side of the sausage. Based on the other Yelp reviews, I expected it to blow me away. I've had better sausage from the supermarket. I like the service, cute decor, and clearly local vibe. I dont like French toast but the cherry French toast was the best I've ever had and it was so good I considered ordering it for myself. One of my all time fave places in Long Beach! There is always a wait but worth it. My faves are the scones, the french toast, eggs Benedict and mascarpone and strawberry bruschetta. The drinks are good, the cups are cute, and everyone is festive. It's an all-around fun experience. I think because of this, you do pay a premium price tag for food and drinks that are just good or okay. I think it's something that is worth the visit if you've never been and you enjoy getting into the Christmas spirit. I think that outside of the pop-up, The Ordinarie is a fun spot to check out in Long Beach. It't not a pillar of the food scene if you're a tourist, but it is a good, late night spot if you work in the industry nearby. They have a great late-night menu with a killer smash burger.

They may need more staff to help the servers with drink refills and to check in more frequently. The Nashville wings are the star of the show. I cannot stress this enough, this is worth a DRIVE for. The seasoning really does remind you of Howlin' Rays (the highest compliment) and the chicken is extremely crispy yet insanely juicy. The pickles and ranch that it comes with pairs so well. Do note that they are tossing it in pork fat, which enhances the depth but also makes it a little greasy at the end. I also wished they'd warn you this and offer to order it without it; especially for those who don't eat pork or for those trying to cut some calories. There's a happy hour menu too!!! Large Orange juice was about 9oz and over $5.95. Ouch! Watered down OJ for 6 bucks? No thanks! The bread - Delicious baguette, fresh, crunchy, and did I say delicious? The sauce - cranberry, tangy, went excellent with the turkey. The soup - (came with the sandwich) Lentil, made my stomach happy. 5 stars in each category, except for size. They gave us these 2 little pieces of baguette that maybe could have fed my cat. The serving portion was tiny! Now for the eggs benedict. Good eggs benedict, cooked correctly, good spinach, good potatoes and it also came with a few piece of baguette. I had the same issues with the benedict as I had with the turkey sandwich...it was teeny! My boyfriend finished his benedict in 2 bites..seriously....2 bites! Oh and they dont put bread on the bottom of the benedict, it comes on the side..very annoying in my opinion. All in all it was really good food. Had the opportunity to eat what some would call brunch here, and all in all, I was impressed. Someone in my group ordered apple french toast which I was allowed to sample. Instead of normal bread they used some sort of a brioche which I think was a good move on their part. Now, did using a brioche come off as pretentious? Yes, yes it did. But was it delicious? Indeed it was. For me personally I had a BLT which is really hard to screw up. As a result, I would've been surprised if my sandwich came out poorly - but it didn't. The BLT was actually well executed. Although not on a brioche bun, the ingredients within the sandwich were well organized and distributed properly. Moreover, they put a garlic aioli on it, which I appreciated. I mean who doesn't like a good aioli... am I right? The only gripe I had about the place is that the dining area was remarkably loud - which I found distracting while I was eating my sandwich. Based on the dimensions of the place it would seem that there isn't much that can be done about the noise level. However a star must come off nontheless. I picked up a copy of the district's "Best Best of Long Beach Ever" and flipped to the dining section as I was starving, in a hurry and on a tight budget. I entered an adorable establishment where the servers let me know that I could sit "wherever I like" - how refreshing! I grabbed a menu off the stand in front of me and chose a cozy table for one. I've never had polenta anything before, but my server informed me that the breakfast polenta is the perfect dish for a rainy day. While I waited for my food, I noticed a variety of magazines that I never find the time to read or purchase. Over a good strong cup of coffee (the way I measure a breakfast establishment: A+ at Starling) I realized I had a good hour before class after all, and enjoyed a moment to breathe. The Breakfast Polenta was divine. My server kept my coffee cup full. I got to read Adbusters. Who can complain? The bill didn't even hit ten bucks and it's the best breakfast I've had in weeks. The roast beef hash looked like fried dog food, plopped out of the can onto powdered scrambled eggs. I never knew that potatoes could be so dried out yet undercooked and hard. No one ever came back to check to see if we needed anything until we were done eating. Our plates sat in front of us for several minutes until the busser came over to take them. He was the only attentive person after we ordered and was very friendly. We asked for the check and the guy who Im assuming was management continued to take the order for 3 other tables before bringing it. When we mentioned that no one ever checked on us, he said that we could've waved at them. No apology, just a "Thank you. We will take that into consideration." Parking is street-only, but don't worry--finding a spot isn't too difficult. The service was great, and the Irish coffee was phenomenal. It woke me up and put hair on my chest at the same time--exactly what I needed for a girl's breakfast! The blue crab cakes and eggs were beyond amazing. But the real showstopper was the breakfast polenta. It's not your run-of-the-mill breakfast dish--slightly sweet with the freshest berries on top, served at a soothing warm temperature. I rarely get up in time for breakfast on days that do not require a visit to the office. This place is actually worth the wake up and wait. The location is quaint and the decor is nice. I probably would not have gone here if it were not compared to a San Fran restaurant by a few co workers of mine. First of all the coffee is very good. The meals we had were all fresh and smartly prepared with true care for the flavors and freshness. The stuffed toast is top five on my list of breakfast items I have ever had out for breakfast. If they could not seemed so rushed and overwhelmed it would be a five star rating. The service was good but the atmosphere felt like everyone was a moment away for losing it. Can't go wrong with The Classic breakfast which includes Applewood smoked bacon, eggs, potatoes and french bread. Great way to start the day. Affordable, too. If you're eating with one of more people for breakfast, then order up a basket of scones. They make them fresh. Very soft and delicious. Can't go wrong. I've never had a scone so tasty, they're significantly better than the standard coffee shop or Starbucks scone that you're used to. On weekends arrive before 9:30am to avoid a potentially long wait for a table. Also, it's in the middle of a residential neighborhood, so be cool and respectful when walking to and from your car. I recently ordered from this restaurant, and unfortunately, my experience has been consistently disappointing. For the second time, items were missing from my order. When I called to address the issue, I was informed they didn't have the product, yet I was still charged. To make matters worse, my food arrived freezing, despite being just a few blocks away. The manager's response to my concerns was shockingly rude, to the extent that if he were my employee, I would have considered termination for such disrespectful communication with a customer. No one bothered to inform me about the unavailability of items. Regrettably, this experience has led me to the decision to no longer support this restaurant.
