I'm bummed this wasn't the next breakfast spot for us to frequent. The pictures look amazing, and yes, the presentation is great. They share a parking lot with Diego's and outdoor seating. They have a specials menu and a nice menu selection for breakfast and lunch. But.... the seating was not comfortable and worn out. The veggie omelet had all the good veggies, but the egg part was weird to me. Too much milk? Too much fluff? It was puffy with air and I saw wet egg juice bubbles when I opened it up. I'm sure some people like their omelets that way, but it wasn't appetizing for myself because I like my omelets cooked through. The country potatoes had bellpepper and onion which was good, but the potatoes weren't dry enough before cooking to crisp up. My boyfriend ordered the green chilaquiles and the sauce was good, but the beans needed salt. Unfortunately it wasn't the best I've had and I'm not expecting to try again. read more

Tried this cafe for the first time this past weekend and loved the local hometown feel to it! The staff is extremely friendly and the food portions were delicious and generous. I had the California Benedict, my husband had a HUGE omelette and my son loved his Mickey pancake. My husband was also a fan of his bacon Bloody Mary. We'll definitely be back to try some homemade pie but we were stuffed after breakfast! read more

What a great way to re start their day by having brunch at Start Fresh Cafe. Really wanted to experience something delicious so I ordered the green chicken chilaquiles. After experiencing mouth watering over the menu description, i hoped that the dish would be satiating-- and Wow-- It was everything I expected!! They have outside seating with a lovely breeze right off the South coast highway. Come and have a lovely brunch! You deserve a break and the treat. We have a big family - 7 people - and absolutely loved this gem. Incredible food, friendly staff, great location, good size portions and easy parking! We got there around 9 am on a Sunday and got seated right away. Immediately, we shared the delectable cinnamon roll...I'm really picky about my cinnamon rolls and would totally recommend this one. Great icing, yummy dough and our whole family shared it! Everyone was happy with their food from savory to sweet. The stuffed French toast was big enough for me and my two daughters to share (none of us are huge eaters), it was incredible and the fresh fruit on top?! The biggest blueberries I've ever seen. My sons got the Farmer's scramble and the Breakfast sandwich on a croissant. My husband got the Big J's omelette. We don't care for hash browns and so the home fries (a combo of potatoes, onions and peppers) were delightful. All the food was excellent! Absolutely ridiculous- I have a service dog (Psychiatrist service dog) and wanted to come in for breakfast. They told me I need "certification" or a paper that states so.... However they don't know laws or that those third part services are fake. It's illegal to refuse service to someone with a service animal. I feel discriminated against. read more

Good selection of food prices are good, everyone in are group loved their food . I believe it was a stuffed country hash brown that I had it was very good and I asked for there gravy on the side and poured the grave on and it was awesome, really good . Definitely going back and recommend to others . Service was very good and owner came to say hi and see how we were doing. Really friendly read more

Went there for lunch and had breakfast instead. They make giant great tasting breakfast. I had two eggs hash browns bacon and two giant pancakes. This breakfast was cooked perfectly. Soft eggs crunchy hash browns and two fluffy pancakes. Highly recommend. read more

Food is delicious! However they have what seems like a dozen employees. And yet they still take long to seat you or take your name down on the wait list. I do understand it was during a rush on a Saturday morning but so many employees walked by me and avoided eye contact. In the end the food made it worth it. read more

Start Fresh Cafe is a quaint little diner, more or less center of town on the main drag. Truth be told, I've been coming to this same greater parking lot for 20+ years to buy carne asada and gringo burritos at the Mexican food place next door (currently called Diego's, but variably named over the decades). Alas, Ben can not live by Carne Asada alone (Hasn't stopped me from trying, mind you) and sometimes, a good diner breakfast with all the fixings satisfies the soul. Mrs. Picante and I stopped in here on our way home from C-bad, sort of one part hunger and three parts memory lane... Upon entering on a late Sunday morning, we were third in line waiting for a table, and the place was packed. Not a bad sign, sure, but the delightful smells of bacon, hash browns, and fresh coffee did that cartoon "come-hither" hand thing, and had me ready to throw down with three eggs and something with strawberry jam on it. We took a seat outside on the narrow front patio (really, a fenced-off, tiled area between the parking stalls and the restaurant front window) and our server handed us menus. Despite sitting outside at the furthest table, our server quickly brought coffees, took or order, and kept checking in regularly for refills and extras. Great service! We both ordered the vegetarian omelet-- a three-egg creation with cheese and a slew of vegetables, including spinach and broccoli. Avocado slices and hash browns (or tomato slices/cottage cheese, dieters!) make it a meal. Sourdough toast arrived at the table warm! For $30 including a nice tip, this place isn't Wendy's cheap, but not a bad deal. Like all of Oceanside, an eclectic mix of clientele provide opportunities for people-watching, even the possibility of a scene or outburst. The range of Yelp reviews for this cute little unpretentious spot speak to that diversity. Still, I recommend you give this place a shot next time you're passing through and simply can't stomach the idea of JITB French toast strips or five rolled with guacamole for breakfast. This place looks like an old coffee shop, but don't let that fool you- the food is delicious and service is superb!! I got the avocado toast which is on thick cut squaw bread with avocado, arugula, feta, eggs (any style) and balsamic glaze on top. They also have a variety of homemade pies. Today I got key lime which was nice and tart with a graham cracker crust. SO good! read more

Great food friendly service. This place definitely has a local feel to it. Dog and kid friendly. I had the stuffed French toast which was delicious. Gone downhill- usually pretty good. They served me a bad sunny side up egg and burnt home fries. How could he send it out like that? Won't be coming back for awhile...what a shame. Also it was very slow so you cant blame it on being super busy. Server was fine and kept my tiny little baby coffee cup full. read more

Start Fresh Cafe had delicious food, extremely friendly staff, and excellent service. Breakfast was served quickly and we all were very happy with our meals. They also were one of the most dog friendly restaurants we have been to, even providing a special water bowl for our dog when our waters were served. The patio is very clean and has a nice amount of space between tables, which is nice for just human groups, or those of us with dogs. I recommend it to everyone! read more

My husband and I went to Start Fresh last Thursday. We noticed it on our way to our normal breakfast place. It was so cute and reminded me of a cafe you'd go to back East. The food was home cooked and absolutely delicious! There is a huge variety of items that you can have gluten free if you like. The Popeye Scramble is my favorite because it's loaded with Spinach, mushrooms and tomatoes with a sprinkle of feta cheese. I added Avocado and wow It's so good! They have a lot of homemade muffins, cinnamon rolls, biscuits and gravy that will blow your mind!!! It's busy on the weekend but there's plenty of seating (inside and out) and the food comes out FAST! We just went again today (Saturday) because we enjoyed our breakfast so much! The owner is lovely and our server Dale was so friendly and so excellent I can't say enough about her! She was attentive and upbeat. She was icing on the cake...a perfect dining experience! read more

We wanted to try a new breakfast place and we were not disappointed! This restaurant is family owned, and has a beach feel to it. Friendly staff, quick service and great tasting food! Tracy was an awesome waitress! Ask for her section! Biscuits and gravy were made from scratch and was awesome! Definitely 5 stars and one I would recommend over ad over. If you're in Oceanside, give them a try. Only open til the afternoon so hit them up in the morning. read more

I had heard this is THE place for pies, so on 2 birthday occasions over past 2 months I wanted to treat family to a great pie. I was disappointed both times. One was blueberry and one pecan. The crusts were dry and overdone. The pecan seemed old when we cut it. Had to practically use a saw. The prices are high, 25 per pie. Definitely going back to Village Pie shop. Maybe I just got them on bad days but not willing to give them 3rd try. read more

I've never noticed this cute little spot. A friend invited me for breakfast and as soon as I walked in I saw the pies. OMG! I ordered my traditional French toast with whip cream, strawberries and blueberries, hash browns, bacon, coffee and a Mimosa. I didn't take a pic (I was in to much of a great conversation). As we talked I look around the restaurant and everyone working was so pleasant. The food was great! The atmosphere was nice and warm. Before we left, I ordered my husband some breakfast to go and of course a slice of pie. I got coconut cream pie (delicious). I think I'm going to start bringing more friends and family here and there was no wait. I wish they would be open longer but you only have till 2pm. Make it a day date with your luv or friends or if family comes to town please try this place out. They even have outside seating in front of the restaurant and on the side of the restaurant under a tent so just in case there's another limited lock down this lovely place can stay open and we all can continue to enjoy this wonderful place. If you're looking for a solid diner for breakfast in Oceanside, look no further. The food is good, portions are fairly large and true to its name, fresh. Service is outstanding. Quick on seating, ordering and getting the check but in no way rushed. Coffee warm-ups always on time. Booth is a little small for my width, but that's on me. I could have requested the counter and probably will if I ever go back. I don't live in the area anymore. read more

Eating on the makeshift outdoor tent due to Covid 19 is surprisingly pleasant, especially these HOT days, there is a cool ocean breeze. They are very good about cleaning the tables. Service was super friendly and accommodating. I had a chop salad and giant cinnamon roll. Salad was fresh and yummy, love it. Freshly made giant cinnamon roll is never bad. Companion had the stuffed hashbrowns with gravy, apparently he enjoyed it cuz he ate the whole thing. Great place for breakfast and lunch. read more

The food was good! The service, slow. No one refiled our water cups. Taking the order took awhile. Filling the order, took awhile. Requesting catsup and vinegar took awhile. (Food is getting cold) Checking on how the meal was, took awhile. The bill had two coffees on it we never ordered. It was a Monday and times are hard so... Would I go back? Sure. My husband and I stopped in to Frankie's on a recent Saturday at 5pm. Our kiddo had a performance down the street at 6pm so we had a little time to kill beforehand. The neighboring spots looked busy so we decided to go with Frankie's, seeing as they were less inundated at the time and we had a time constraint. Another allure was the sandwich board at the front door advertising discounted cocktails - sold!! Inside there were a handful of patrons at the bar, another table with two additional patrons and maybe a couple on the patio so it was fairly quiet and slow, so it looked promising. We headed up to the bar and hung out behind two empty barstools, the single female bartender greeted us and said she'd be right with us, but then continued chatting up the seated patrons, serving them and their friends that had just joined (AFTER we'd arrived). We moved a little further down to the handoff area where she was making drinks to save her having to come back to us again, and stood there for probably 10 minutes while she took orders and made all the drinks. We commented that she looked like she could definitely use a hand, and she said they were still adjusting into summer hours and determining whether more coverage was needed at this time - I figured 5pm on a Saturday should be primetime, so I'm not sure in what universe having a single bartender makes any sense. Finally we placed our cocktail orders, waited while they were made, and then put our card down for the tab. After we'd paid, I noticed the cocktails were more expensive than advertised on the sandwich board out front - I couldn't find a disclaimer anywhere that said only certain cocktails were included, so while it was a bummer I wasn't about to wait another 10-15 minutes to catch her attention and ask for clarification. Just a heads up to beware of whatever is advertised that might summon you in from the sidewalk, and make sure you ask before you make your selection. Drinks were very subpar, nothing special to write home about. While I can appreciate the Gatsby-esque vibe they're trying to uphold at Frankie's, they really should increase their staffing especially during prime weekend and evening hours, and be more transparent about their specials and what's included and what's not. Hindsight is 20/20, and the low volume of patrons when everything else around it was going off was probably a sign, so we'll skip Frankie's our next go around.

This place is legit! Just like many of the reviews here, the service is top notch. Friendly, attentive, professional. The food was excellent. We were a party of nine, they set us up in a spot with lots of shade and a cool breeze and lots of room. We all ate breakfast plates and everyone loved their food. I had the lumberjack breakfast it was too much to eat, portion was huge. The biscuits were amazing. Will be returning for sure. I want to try the freshly baked pies. Beware saw cockroaches in the bathroom. Makes me wonder what bugs are in the kitchen. Scary stuff. Cockroaches carry disease and filth. The flies are another problem I noticed. There was only one server working, which I completely understand can happen when a restaurant is short-staffed. However, the server never acknowledged us or even let us know that he would be with us shortly. We eventually had to flag down the host to let him know that we were ready to order. The host told us our server will take our order. You would think the host will tell the server we were ready but nope he didn't. The server passed by our table at least five times before finally coming over. Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for the lack of customer service. It was mediocre and nothing particularly special or memorable. The dishes were very basic and tasted like something that could easily be made at home. There was nothing that stood out to me. The server didn't bother to check on us to see how things were going or if we needed anything. Maybe the poor customer service impacted my overall impression of the food, but the entire experience was disappointing. Based on our experience, I would not recommend this place.
