I came here to see if it was really worth the 5 stars and well, it is. I got a iced honey latte (half sweetness) and it was just perfect. Smooth coffee and subtle honey flavor. My husband and I shared a maple donut and it was delicious! It is very dense so it would be hard to eat a whole one but sharing it was perfect! There was ample street parking when we arrived but it was a Monday at 9am. The staff was great! read more

I've been a fan of this place for years. Although I don't get over there from Walnut Creek nearly enough. It's styled perfectly, minimalist, contemporary, and of course, absolutely delicious coffee. There's lots of room to work, meet up, or just sit solo indoors or outside. Today I even took my kids close to closing time after mini golf (across the street), and expected the staff to not be thrilled to have us 10 minutes before closing. Quite the opposite, actually - they were welcoming, generous, and happy to see us. Sometimes *cool* places like this can lean towards hipster/rude service, but everyone that works here is always lovely, so I'm inclined to support them even more. Tried this coffee shop on our way back from Vallejo. This was my first time in downtown Martinez and I really liked the small town feel. States Coffee is a cool little spot for that afternoon cup of joe and a good book. The interior had lots of open space and was very clean and modern. They also had outside tables as well and on days like this past weekend, it is awesome. I can also imagine it's a decent place to study or write. They've got some decent swag, too. But how's the coffee? One word: excellent. I take my coffee black and I like a dark roast. SC makes a nice black coffee. Pro-tip: check in with Yelp and you get a free doughnut. Nice! My sister ordered the banana bread and it was very good--light and banana-y. It was the perfect chill afternoon. The young ladies behind the counter were so friendly and helpful. They definitely made our experience better. I just wish there was a SC on my side if the Bay. read more

Such high praise for this place required a look-see. Got here early and started the day with nary another soul, which made taking photos easier. The usual coffee house drink and pastry menu with some specialty breads as well. The space is rather large and open; such marvelously high ceiling with skylights made the space feel even more open. Large community tables will be much more inviting once COVID-19 is controlled or over. There are also some power outlets near the tables for the power users. My usual dirty Chai with oat milk was good with a slightly ginger forward taste; not quite as creamy as expected but good. The Earl Grey vegan donut however did not taste much like Earl Grey. Perhaps the other baked goods were better? Overall, obviously it's a community hub. In the next hour the place was full of customers inside and out. read more

I was excited to try this cute and spacious coffee shop, although it is a 30 minute drive from me. I can say it was well worth the drive. There is plenty of parking (paid street parking starting at 9a) and seating inside and outside the coffee shop. The pastries looked yummy, but I didn't try any this time (will be back to try). The staff was very kind and welcoming. I ordered an iced vanilla latte, and it was top tier. The only reason I am not giving this a 5/5 stars is because I was informed that they no longer offer almond milk as an option and only serve whole milk or oat milk. I find this odd and hope they offer almond milk in the future. Regardless, I will be back to try more! read more

Go here if you want a relaxed experience. Coffee is great. Scones are tasty. Ambiance is 5/5. The service is so incredibly slow! I waited for 20 minutes and the line was out the door into the rain. The staff weren't hustling either. They're super friendly, but I would skip this stop if I was in a hurry. This place is AMAZING with a kind staff + smooth espressos + vegan donuts + clean bathroom which is always a plus + beautiful interior with tons of table room to study with free wifi or just relax and hang out. We tried the chai tea latte w/ oat milk, dark mocha w/ whole milk, a vegan blueberry donut which is a must try, and a maple donut. We enjoyed everything and got the chance to see them roast their coffee on site. Exciting stuff! They offer vegan donuts, ice cream, homemade granola from farm and flour bakery cafe in Benicia, and oat milk as their dairy free milk alternative. I will definitely stop in and try their other beverages such as their honey vanilla latte or cold brew with cold foam the next time I'm in town. Give this place a try! read more

Came for coffee and some banana bread, got a loaf of the daily special on a whim. The gruyere Rosemary bread here is absurd. With the help of State's butter the lid was gone in about fifteen minutes, with another purchased for the road. On Tuesday around noon there wasn't a line, seriously just give the bread a shot, don't even ask what the special is just pick up a surprise and blow your own mind. read more

Downtown started to have a ton of great restaurants and coffee shops pop up and States as been one of those amazing spots. After moving away following college, I was summoned for jury duty for several weeks in Martinez. States saved me most days when I needed a coffee, tea, or delicious treat fix. I was able to visit during the pandemic when a family member had to vote and I was amazed with their safety procedures to make sure patrons and staff were safe. So good it made me consider moving to Martinez. Great coffee and pastries, love these offerings so much. Definitely in the modern coffee camp. The aesthetic for their business is modern and cool with a lot of charm from the restored vintage building. Friendly service and really good safety measures made it a pleasure even with a short wait. They even have a little parking lot adjacent. On weekends you can walk over to the downtown farmers market (Sundays maybe?). They also sell break from a bakery over in Benecia. When I got home and sampled it I think my words were "this is the best bread I have ever eaten". So that's another plus. read more

Came down to downtown because I heard that there is sort of a renaissance going on down there, where young cats are trying to re-imagine the area to mirror other great downtown charm found in places such as Seattle, Portland, San Diego, etc. Breweries have come started to move in, and States Coffee has has taken it's cue from the idea that a great product(s), paired with a good location, and an even better philosophy, should lead you to success. I am a pour-over snob. I'll drink the drip when its convenient, but the flavor and aroma of beans as a priority, rather than caffeine content, is something I wanted to delve into. The "barista" at the front was very informative when I asked about their different beans. They had a pretty good selection in both whole and ground (I bought he whole, because hey, remember? I'm a connoisseur) Ended up buying 3 bags of their different flavors, and gifted 1 to another friend who is a coffee person, and they loved it. Their "additive" flavors are very subtle, but the bean is really high quality. Good oil, not over-roasted for that medium body. When the bean quality is great, you can drink the coffee black! I love me some States Coffee! The atmosphere is fun and minimalistic. It's a great place to spend the day studying or to meet up with friends. The coffee is fresh, at times complex, and always delicious. And oh yeah! They have delicious and moist pastries many of which are gluten-free! If you eat gluten-free bread then you understand the importance of "moist" pastries. They are almost unheard of! Bonus: if you haven't been to downtown Martinez in a while, you should definitely check it out. Martinez has really built up their downtown area by adding some really great restaurants, coffee shops, and bars/breweries. Support small and local businesses! read more

I had heard and read about this place on Yelp and finally had a chance to come here. First I would like to applaud this business in making it safe for not only their workers but for the patrons too. I truly appreciate that during these times we are experiencing. One party at a time in the building and signs indicate that. We placed our order, hubby got a coffee with an expresso shot and I got the affogato. We paid and headed back outside to wait by other door. There was a table indicating drink pick up. On the sidewalk they have a sitting area and umbrellas to hang out around to wait for drinks or just chill. I loved my drinks! I rarely have affogato so to have one that was just so good made it worth the calories! Hubby enjoyed his coffee/expresso too. My sister first introduced me to States a little over a year ago, and I've been hooked ever since. Dare I say, States is the best coffee the Bay Area has to offer? Yes, it is! The coffee here is made with love. You won't find any watered down coffee, or coffee made from burnt beans at this location! In addition to the drinks, they also serve pastries, freshly made bread and offer beans/coffee grounds. I love getting their donuts and country sourdough bread! The Heart + Soul coffee grounds are also my favorite. Today they celebrated their 5th anniversary and gave all of their customers free drinks and donuts. I got there at 10 am and the line was down the block. They handed out special pins to celebrate the occasion and even offered everyone cold brew coffee while we waited in line to make our orders! Now that's customer appreciation! States also has another location in Benicia called Farm and Flour and they have a larger food menu. Pst, the fresh baguette and avocado toast are to die for. Highly recommend both locations! You won't be disappointed. :) read more

One of our favorite local coffee shops to visit especially when we need a break from these days of shelter-in-place. The staff is always super friendly and the coffee is smooth and delicious. We typically order an iced vanilla latte which always hits the spot. On our most recent trip we also purchased a loaf of country bread which is made by the folks at Farm and Flour (I have a separate review for them as well). The prices are pretty standard for what you would expect at other local coffee shops. We're happy to see this small business remain open during these abnormal times and hope others continue to support them as well! read more
