My little girl & I arrived we waited several minutes before we were sat at a table. They only had one waitress. We were waited on after around 2 or 3 minutes & she took our order. She filled our drinks & brought them to us. Then we sat there & watched several other groups come in & a couple of couples. We had already been sitting at the table for a little over 20 minutes waiting for our order. Then after we had been sitting there for over 30 minutes we watched everyone who came in after us get their orders before us & we still had there for several minutes before we got our food. They had music blaring & my daughter pointed out the fact that it was the unclean version so lots of cussing etc & a lot of n word in the songs. It would've been fine if it were cleaned versions because several of had our children in the restaurant. We finally got our food, our fries were a little hard but still edible & our garlic cheese burgers were ok, my daughters had a little to much garlic sauce on it so she couldn't eat it ,she said it made her feel sick so she only ate some of her fries. Mine was fine so ate it. They didn't refill our teas until after we had been sitting there long enough for our glasses to be empty & my food was nearly gone, the refill was two new glasses of warm tea & no one bothered to ask if we needed more ice. The employees kept disappearing away from the grill & kitchen so when some customers came to pick their to go orders they had to wait several minutes before they were even noticed & then had to wait for their orders for several more. The restaurant was not clean , the floors were filthy, trash & food on the floors & in the kitchen area you could see burger buns under the grill & squished fries on the floor & various other things , the bathroom wasn't even that clean but it was cleaner than the kitchen area & dining room . The only waitress they had was wiping tables down & bussing them herself & she was polite. When we got done with our food we ordered shakes to go & that was the fastest thing we received out of our whole visit. We went to pay our ticket & had to wait several minutes before anyone came to check us out, they didn't have the correct change to give me so I was so done that I had to take less than what I supposed to have gotten back in change. Then when my little girl & I tried to leave the door was locked & we couldn't unlock it & the employees saw us standing there & trying to unlock it & they saw us looking at them & did nothing until I said in a tone that everyone could hear but without raising my voice , we can't leave ya'll have the door locked & we would like to go. Finally the employee came & even struggled themselves to get the door to unlock so all of including several other customers who were also waiting to leave could leave. I gave them two stars based on the fact they got us our shakes pretty quick & my burger wasn't bad. We normally like coming to this restaurant but it has gotten bad. read more

I don't understand the hate for this place in the reviews. The food here is pretty good, especially after a long night out and about. The milkshakes here are not only big, but also tasty. The burgers here are nice and juicy. Only thing I don't really like are the fries. They're like little potato chips that are annoying to eat. I got the sundae this time and it was alright. The ice cream in it was more icy than creamy, but it's passable. Just stick with the burgers and you'll be good. Best part? The prices here are dirt cheap. This is the worst restaurant. Haven't been in a long time but was close by and decided to give it a try. Line was short in the drive through but waited 10 minutes on the ONE car in front of me. Meal was 5.29 so I gave the cashier 10.29 expecting a 5 in return. No, I am handed 4.90 in change. When I questioned her she basically called me a liar. Then she proceeded to hand me someone else's food and had to rummage through 3 bags to find mine. I ordered without onion, pickle and tomato but guess what. That's exactly what I got. I wish I could give less than a star. Drive thru, all the employees are hanging out back, no biggie, wasn't a busy time, but my car was filled with cigarette smoke from them. I'm 9 months pregnant and it tore me up. Then I get to the window. The employee is very nice, no problems with him. My food though, simple, single steakburger with cheese meal with a coke. It took forever. When I got the bag, the bag itself was cold so it felt like a bad sign. The first thing I get to when I open my bag was very cold, very old looking fries and that's usually the best part and why I go there. The burger, undercooked, cold, so cold the cheese was barely melted. Let's just say I didn't try these for my health and well being. I threw them away at another fast food joint where I obtained hot food. I know, it's just cheaper fast food, but I usually get good food there. Very disappointing. I picked up dinner tonight. I had the white truffle prime steak burger, garlic and Parmesan herb fries and the orange freeze. The burger was really good, I know, I was surprised myself, lol. The fries were really tasty and the orange freeze was good and not a very strong orange flavor, sort of like a creamsickle. Ordered a cup of chili for before my meal and the waitress even asked if I wanted cheese and onions and I responded then never got my chili. We ordered cheese fries and got almost no cheese on our cheese fries. No refills on drinks. Had to scream across the restaurant to our server to get her attention. The manager is no where to be found. I recommend somewhere else. They have two other servers who are working. Ok so normally I am sarcastic and joking when I do my posts. However, I am giving this place 5 stars because of our server Denise. They are slammed, short staffed and it is mad chaos in the place. We were literally walking out the door to leave, when Denise came to get us. From the conversation my wife and I overheard, Denise sat us in another servers section and offered to get our drinks for us till she could take our order. I like how you can make anything a meal and choose 2 sides. - Fries: thin and long. Best when you order cheese fries and chili as sides to make your own chili cheese fries. - Shakes: thick but not so much that you can't use a straw. Traditional vanilla and chocolate as well as specialty flavor mixes. - Sit down diner-style: clean white and red atmosphere with the slight feel of a diner or soda shop but without the excess grease. - Staff: graciously accepting of our sometimes silly and obnoxious post-drinking behavior. Say if an anonymous someone was throwing toast at another person at their table and doused their sausage paddies in another's vanilla shake, they wouldn't even bat an eye and just give them the freedom to be stupid. ;-) - End of the night stop: open 24 hours and serve large glasses of water. Honestly, what can I say about this place that hasn't been said before? Iama C. pretty much said anything you might want to know. It satisfies a craving and an urge to consume cheap, greasy food and feel like a damned 1950s barbarian while you're at it. And it succeeds in this attempt. Sometimes I can't help but wonder what exactly is in those "100% beef" patties.... Yeah, right. But I'm young, so my body can deal with "it". I've tried a wide range of food at Steak 'n Shake, but this time I opted for a less greasy option with chicken fingers. Which I've never had at any other one before. It's almost sacrilegious to not eat a burger here, I know. But there is a 10% amount of time every month where a burger just won't do it for me. The fingers ran me less than $5 and were decent. Nothing special, but good enough for what I wanted: something that tasted like chicken. The fries are always nice. Shoestring thin and crispy, and easily over-salted if you add too much of their seasoning, since they already pre-salt the fries. Service wasn't exceptionally slow, even though there appeared to be only one waitress on duty to feed the hungry folk after dark. Restaurant was clean enough. Food was good enough. What can I say, though I'm adamant that I "love Steak 'n Shake" it's a love born out of cheap, 3-4 star food, fast service, and a sweet 1950s setup. My body doesn't hate me after I consume their food (I'm looking at you 90% of fast food places), and my wallet is certainly thankful. So yes, I'd say I'm a fan, but I could never foresee a Steak 'n Shake receiving an "As Good as it Gets" 5 star review. read more

Went through drive thru at 1:30 on a Friday. It took 8 minutes to get to the speaker with 3 cars in front of us. Ordered a milkshake and a small coke. Took another 6 minutes sitting behind 1 car to get to the window. No apologies for the wait were offered. Then it took 4 minutes while she got our order together. Because for some unknown reason she couldn't get our order together while the car in front of us was waiting. The only reason we didnt pull out was to time how long it would take for two drinks. The adult meals and one of the kids meals came about 20 minutes after we ordered but we had to wait another 30 minutes for our other kids meals. Meaning the first food was cold by the time we got everybody's. We never got our milkshakes and just assumed they were forgotten but magically they appeared on the bill along with fries we didn't order. No refills on drinks, had to track down silverware for the salad we ordered. Waitress acted like we were an inconvenience and huffed when we asked for ketchup. Too bad there are no stars lower than one star. This steak and shake was terrible. I sat down to eat with four of my friends, one of them being a vegetarian. Altogether we ordered 4 milkshakes, 1 patty melt w/ onion rings, 2 cheesy cheddar burgers w/ Parmesan herb fries, 1 BLT w/ fries, and 1 veggie melt w/ parmesan fries (for the vegetarian). What we got was a VEGGIE MELT w/ BACON on it and no mushrooms, all regular fries, and no onion rings to be found, even though the ticket clearly stated ONION RINGS by the server. The waitress caught the mistake of the parmesan seasoned fries as soon as she brought us our food. Although she never caught the fact that we were missing an order of onion rings. Then we explained to the waitress that there was bacon on this so-called veggie melt. She was very confused looking on why he wanted to send the sandwich back to the kitchen. But when she finally did, the entire wait staff was standing around doing nothing as they stared in awe at our table. We shrugged it off and struggled to eat our mediocre food. A lot of reasons y. Like one time I waited in the line for 30mins just for them to say the milkshakes were down or they can only take cash or both. They could've sent someone outside to tell their guests that instead of wasting their time. Also there r times when I went thru the drive thru n they said the milkshakes were off and it was a little after 10, yet they close at 11. U r steak and SHAKE!!! But today, I finally did get a shake (realized I have to get it before 10 now) and when I go it, I noticed that didn't fill it to the top. I felt like they outed me at least .50. I paid for the whole shake so I expected the whole shake. I almost turned around n asked them to fill it up. So almost every time is a bad time but I find myself always trying to go back cuz I get off of work late n I love shakes. I just need them to get their act together. I must start with I love their burgers. Thin, flavorful and tasty. So maybe I'm biased. Where else can you get a burger and fries for 4 bucks. My wife and I took our grandkids (13 & 14). Maybe the kids menus were not needed, but the hats were fun! We all had the specials. Yep. I'm a pig so I then had another. The burgers are small and thin but oh so tasty. Everyone was hungry. My grandkids had another as well! Shakes were great. The waitress almost kept up with my diet coke (yep I drink a lot). The other servers didn't seem very enthusiastic, ours was ok but not great. The weird is that the blinds were down at 8.30 at night. My wife wasn't sure they were open. Oh well. It was a fun night. Too many burgers ( think 8 servings) three shakes and a soda set us back $47. Eating at this restaurant is always hit and miss as to the service. Tonight was a huge miss! They weren't that busy and there were 3 servers on duty yet after almost 10 minutes, no one even stopped by to ask about our drink order. Went here today after Five Guys right across the street. Two very different experiences in a very short amount of time. First, as you walk in, the little vestibule or like little room where you walk into the store smells like extremely bad body odor. Secondly, as a previous review said, the service here is terrible. I noticed at least 3 servers waiting around while we were waiting on our order. Our order consisted of 2 milkshakes, something that other places like Cook Out which are much busier than this steak and shake turn out within 2-3 minutes. It took us nearly 15 minutes to get a shake and a gentleman who came in after me was given his milkshakes before me. The milkshakes themselves weren't anything special. I definitely don't think they were $3.65 worthy. Cook Out has better shakes for a better price which won't leave me waiting 15 minutes. read more
