This has been my first appointment in 5 years because I have had such horrible experiences with dentist in the past (ive walked out in the middle of procedures) and was terrified of them since. Honey child, NO! The dentist's hands shakes! I went there once, and never went back (well, I did go back, but...) During my initial appointment, an assistant took x-rays, and that portion was fine. The red flags were raised after the x-rays. After the x-rays were taken, I met with Doctor Hook. As he asked me questions and took notes, his hand was shaking (as if he was holding something that vibrated). Then as he looked in my mouth, his hand continued to shake. This is not someone I would allow to do any work on me. Dental work requires a steady hand, and Dr. Hook does not have that! The above is enough to never go back, but to top it off, Dr. Hook kept trying to push a medical credit card on me. I told him if there was a procedure I needed that insurance didn't cover and I couldn't afford, I would wait to have the work done 'til when I could afford it. He completely ignored what I was saying and continued with his plug of some credit card. He must get a commission for signing people up. Then he proceeded to complain about how he doesn't really make any money off patients that come to him through their insurance because insurance companies have negotiated such low rates, blah blah blah. He just went ahead and threw professionalism out of the window. Anyways, I never went back, except to pick up copies of the x-rays they took to take to my new dentist. Fellow Yelpers, and folks that don't Yelp, but read the reviews (that use to be me ), I do not recommend this dentist because of the simple, but critical fact that his hand is not steady. read more

Dr. Hook is a nice guy. But the way he's running his operation, not so great. I went to Dr. Hook a total of 3 times, twice for a crown and once for a cleaning. I won't be back for a number of reasons: - He was 30 minutes late to both crown appointments - He consistently talked about me in the 3rd person to the hygenist as if I wasn't there - When they took the crown impression, the next step was for me to come back in to have the final crown "installed". I scheduled the future appointment, but then Dr. Hook's office cancelled the appointment the day before it was supposed to happen. Then I didn't hear a thing from them for more than 5 months. When they finally called me back in, the receptionist started lecturing me about how it had been far too long, and how they were going to charge me more to re-take a new impression for the crown. Then when I came back in to have the final work done, Dr. Hook was 30 minutes late. The hygenist was 15 minutes late. If you can't make it by 9am, don't make me come in at 9am. Have me come in at 9:30. The receptionist was on the phone with one of her girlfriends the entire time while I was waiting. - On the cleaning, the hygenist was listening to some religious talk radio station and repeatedly tried to engage me in religious conversation related to what was being said on the radio. a) not interested. b) inappropriate. c) even if I did want to talk, I can't because I have a mouth full of tools. d) pay attention to the sharp tools you are currently cutting my mouth with. I walked out really sore after that cleaning, worst one I've ever had. Overall a poor experience. I'll be screening my next choice of dentist more thoroughly than I did with Dr. Hook. read more

I've only been going to Dr. Hook for a few months now, but honestly, he is a great guy. After not having to see a dentist in almost 3 years, I was obviously nervous about my first appointment, but he made me feel very comfortable, and attempted to know more about me before prying open my jaw. Then we were onto a whole new set of problems of fixing me. His front office is a little harried and they mess up often, which is my biggest complaint. I had an appointment on a Saturday for a crown, and the appointment was erased from the book without ever speaking to me. However, even with that, Dr. Hook made sure that I came in there to get the work done that I needed, and would apologize profusely for the wait. I knew it wasn't his fault, but the acknowledgment is nice to hear as well. Super friendly staff, and well skilled. And will actually listen to your issues and try to make you as comfortable as possible. Everything a dentist should be. Plus, he's a Trojan. Can't argue with that! read more

I've been going to Dr. Hook since the end 2013. Both he and his team are nothing less than fantastic. I don't get the negative reviews here because I've had nothing but a great experience every time I have gone. My visits were always thorough, I was never kept waiting, and my questions about my insurance and the reason for my visit were answered in detail and thoroughly, all done with a friendly, happy attitude. I appreciate the reminders when I'm due for a cleaning, and the newsletters are filled with good dental info. I was even pleasantly surprised to receive a digital birthday greeting recently from him and his team. They really are a nice group, and 'nice' mxed with great customer service seems to be so rare these days! If you are looking for a new dentist or oral surgeon, I highly recommend Dr. Hook. They are located in Westchester and have parking for the building, unlike a lot of place in Los Angeles. read more

I enthusiastically endorse Dr. Hook and his extremely professional dental hygienist. He is a rare find in today's unfortunately economically driven dental services business which used to be a profession. Dr. Hook remains a professional. By that I mean he puts his economic interests secondary to laying out my options as a patient. He goes to his pricing book based on industry norms, adds up the pricing of each option and transparently shows me the cost of my options and then straightforwardly discusses my pros and cons given my dental history and health. I'm 68. I grew up here in LA and one of my father's best friends was a dentist in Beverly Hills. I grew up with world class dental care. Dr. Hook is the real deal. I happened upon him by a chance referral when I was doing a few projects at Sony. I see his hygienist every three months to stay on top of a genetic disposition for rapid tartar build up and she's the best I've found in over 30 years. They are a world class team. read more

I have been going to Dr. Hook for over 15 years and I have been thoroughly satisfied. I originally came to Dr. Hook because of a dental emergency and he was very accommodating and prompt. I was quickly added to the schedule and my tooth was repaired. I brought my wife and my two daughters to Dr. Hook. I have referred several friends to him as well. I have been going to Dr. Hook's office only for a few months, it had been far too long since I had been to a dentist so I knew there would be a lot of work to do on my mouth. Frankly, dentists make me incredibly nervous for a variety of reasons, Dr. Hook took the time to listen to me about that and I feel was very attentive and responsive to my situation. He explains what he is about to do and is great at breaking it down so a layman can gain an understanding of what is about to happen, that helped me a lot, knowing details about what he is poking or scraping at for instance and why. I love that he takes the time for his patients, not running between 4 different patients franticly like many dentists nowadays seem to do, he was very real and personable and makes you feel that he cares about you, I like that the he is a bit informal as that usually comes off as fake and too p.c. to me, that makes me feel very calm as well, no bs acting like a sterilized medical droid, he takes the time to listen and explain and is in no rush, always presenting me with options and not forcing anything at me. So far I am very happy with the work done, my teeth are looking and feeling a heck of a lot better than they were a few months ago. The Dr. is a funny and informative guy that takes time for his patients, does great work, and makes me feel quite comfortable as he is drilling away fixing up my teeth. Thank you Dr. Hook! read more

Oh my goodness, I stumbled upon this listing and cannot believe these positive reviews! Both my mother and I left this dentist for varying reasons, including: He talks at length about himself, and does not do the work. I was supposed to have a cleaning but they "ran out of time." I never went back after listening to a litany of war stories (literally). I also was told that I needed 8 fillings redrilled and refilled, something I did not do and no other dentist has told me. My mother left when her dental work did not hold up. I sure do not get these reviews, but seeing them, had to weigh in. read more

To echo what's already been said here, it's a matter of style. Dr. Hook is as good as they get. He teaches, serves on state advisory boards -- he's the other the other dentists go to for advice. But... He runs a really laid back operation. He jokes a lot, is very informal with his staff and patients, but personally I like that. If you're the type that likes that "professional veneer", then it might not be a good fit. But if you want competence, you won't find anyone better. Personally, I'd rather someone who SHOWS you he's a professional than one who ACTS like a professional. read more

I've been going to Dr. Hook for over ten years now and having some serious work being done. I've finally gone into debt to an extent that he can actually write up a plan that is funded and doesn't have to wait to be paid for a long as he has in the past. I've never spent more than a few minutes in his waiting room (and the magazines are all lined up properly) If you enter his office in a happy,sane state of mind you'll find an equally balanced surrounding there (OK, so maybe some good-natured ranting, usually by me). As for changes in an appointment etc., well, dental health depends on a balance between scheduling, dental lab work and our personal lives that all have to be juggled to make it all work together. I personally have never experienced any problems that I can remember other than recently,"can you come in an hour earlier? Yes" Oh My! Now that's traumatic! I can't say enough good things about Dr. hook. My family has been going to him for several decades. We trust him implicitly with all of our dental care. It is so great to go to a professional who can do all of the work and rarely would have to refer you out for special care like many dentists do today if they are not skilled as a generalist. He is a perfectionist and does excellent work. Matter of fact, he once saved my husbands life by identifying extreme high blood pressure associated with a cardiac problem. Due to Dr. hook's astute observation, he referred us immediately to our doctor and hospital. We made it just in time. We had no idea that the problem was that severe. Thank you again Dr. hook. I have been seeing Dr. Hook for over 30 years. I have had fillings replaced and crowns over the years. Dr. Hook has always been professional and has done excellent work.
