we had reservations for mother's day, arrived on time but waited more than two hours before being seated. it was very chaotic. there were lots of people standing around to be seated in spite of having reservations. when we were finally seated we were in a private room with multiple other families not in the main dining area which took away from the full experience. food was good. drinks were good. but the service needs lots of work. read more

I never leave reviews but I felt obligated to leave this one. I've dined at steakhouses and fine dining all over the USA and the meal we had last night might have been the poorest restaurant experience I've ever been through. We had a confirmed reservation for a group of 6 that was made over a month in advance - the entire group arrived 5min prior to our reservation and checked in and were told we would be seated shortly. We opted to stand near the bar to try to get a pre dinner drink while waiting and were totally ignored by the three different bartenders who were serving folks seated at the bar. After 20 minutes of trying to flag one down we were told "you must be seated at the bar to order a drink." What? We went back to hostess desk to inquire when our table would be ready (now 20mins past scheduled reservation time) and were told "there's a lot of people here with reservations like you we will get you seated when we can." No sorry, no we're working on it - nothing. After an hour and 10 minutes from our reservation time they finally took us to a table which was a small booth for 2 maybe 3 people that they squeezed 6 of us into. There wasn't even enough room on the table for everyone's drinks. Because we were so delayed for the table reservation we ordered immediately to try and catch up to get out of there. Our appetizer took another hour to arrive after we asked about it 3 different times from our server. There was literally not enough room on the table for the appetizers and drinks so we were having to hold our plates in our hands to eat. It took another hour for our entrees to arrive after the appetizer and by that point half our group had cancelled their entree and given up and the $$$$ steaks arrived and we're not even hot anymore which made no sense because at this point the restaurant had mostly cleared out. I asked two different food runners for silverware so I could eat the dinner and they both acknowledged and walked off and never returned. I had to take silverware from a table next door just so I could eat. The manager did come by and apologize multiple times, did comp our appetizers and a round of drinks, but it never got any better - actually worse. We left well after 11pm with a very expensive tab with half the group looking for late night pizza because they lost faith in STK. Too many incredible fine dining options in Chicago - this is not the one. read more

I would give 0 stars if I could because my dinner experience was so abysmal. My husband and I were celebrating our 17rh wedding anniversary and decided to have dinner at STK in downtown Chicago. We had 2 previous visits that were positive so we were looking forward to this dinner we had planned there. It didn't start off swimmingly because the restaurant canceled our reservation on Open Table without providing any kind of explanation. Then we made another reservation at the same time but we should have stopped there because our experience the next night was less than positive. We had an 8:15 reservation on a Saturday night and we arrived at 8. Of course they had no tables for 2 available even though we had a reservation! So we sat at the bar (within eyesight of the hostess stand) and had 2 drinks while we waited for a table to open up. They texted us at 8:20 that our table was ready but we somehow missed the text with it being so loud with music and people continuing to come into the restaurant. So as soon as we realized we missed the text we went up to the hostess stand and explained what happened. Basically since we missed the grace period they cancelled our reservation (again!) on Open Table. So we continue to wait for a table to open up and my husband and I are getting increasingly annoyed but are trying to make the best of the situation because, for crying out loud, we haven't even sat down at a table yet! So they finally seat us, except it's a table in this room that they are clearly using for overflow reservations, and of course they give us the table closest to the door (oh and btw it's windy and cold in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend) so we feel a draught every time the door opens. Also this room is very brightly lit compared to the rest of the restaurant that's dark and very nightclub-like, as if they stuck all the "rejects" in the less superior room, so very weird! Then, after we finally got situated and ordered some drinks, 2 of the hostesses came over and asked us to move to a different tiny ass table in the reject room. This table was to the left of the table we were sitting at and the reason they asked us to move was so they could fit in another huge long table to accommodate another 15 or so people in another party. They said they had erred in putting us at that particular table originally! Ok, I am almost 50 years old and have been to a lot of restaurants in my life. Never have I been asked to move tables at any restaurant, let alone a place like STK! I kiddingly asked the hostess if we were being punished for missing our reservation earlier! Steak was good. Our overall experience was...fine. For the $300 tab for the 2 of us, I would go somewhere else next time. This was an early anniversary date night splurge dinner. Other than the hostess, there was no Acknowledgment of the occasion. Not that I was expecting fanfare, but throughout the course of our dinner, at various times, every single table around us was brought sparklers & shots to celebrate whatever occasion that table was there for. I recently visited for a friend's birthday dinner. I understand normal protocol (sat when half the group is there, etc.), but this seemed overly strict considering the restaurant was 20% full (or less). The staff seemed to be just following the rules, so I respect that but think some flexibility should be permitted. When I arrived, we had more than half of the group there. We were instructed to wait and would not be seated until everyone was there. Keep in mind, 20% capacity...maybe. So, we waited. We were sat maybe 15 minutes later (unclear) when the last of the group arrived. We had a great waiter, and I'm wishing now I could remember his name. He instructed us that per the chef, all orders are taken together - appetizer and entrees, for the entire group. I'm sure that makes some sense for the kitchen so food doesn't sit under a heat lamp. However, is that necessary when the restaurant is nearly empty? It was like prime time rules during off-peak time. Consistency could be key, though. We ordered everything and enjoyed the steak special with the au poivre sauce (around $55) and a side of Brussels sprouts. Keep in mind the sides are easily sharable for 2-3 people. The parmesan truffle fries looked good, but they're basically steak fries (thick). They were good, but the middles were bland (as you would expect with steak fries). Note: do not miss out on the complimentary bread. It's magical! If you're looking for affordable drinks, the beer isn't too terribly priced. If you're interested in cheap wine, expect to pay $15+ per glass. If you're there for a celebration, they do that well! They came out with 3 or 4 people holding flares (probably not the right word) and a shot for everyone in the group (maybe a dessert for the birthday girl, too). That was pretty cool. :) Definitely makes the person feel special and like the center of attention. Overall, the ambience is cool and they have a happy hour. It's Sunday-Friday from 4:00 - 6:30pm. Looks like they're offering half off drinks and bites in the bar and lounge areas! That might be more my speed. If you're a steakhouse scene and don't have to worry about a budget, you'll have fun at STK Chicago! read more

I will be honest, the only reason, we had stopped here was that I had a $50 gift card. I was really pleasantly surprised about this restaurant due to many verbal negative comments that I had heard about this place. I had arrived about 6pm so we could take advantage of the "Social Hour". I was able to find couple of seats at the bar. Mark D, Bartender, had greeted me and had a brief conversation. While I was waiting for my friend, I thought I'd try the Strawberry Cobbler and the Bacon Skewers. Before 6:30pm, you can receive half off of certain cocktails and then take advantage their appetizer menu. Luckily, few minutes later, my friend had arrived and had ordered the Gin & Pear It cocktail. We had ordered couple Little Burgers, the Ceasar Salad, the Grits, and the Ceviche appetizers. Since we were not in a rush, the apps were brought out whenever they were done. We were very impressed with all of the appetizers. Then we ordered another round of drinks. At this time Christine became our bartender, who was very pleasant. We were there on the right night so there were few people in the restaurant, the DJ was playing 80s music, which the volume was not loud - we had a conversation without shouting at each other. The decor has a very hip/modern feeling. Great ambiance. For dessert, we had tried the STK Donuts. The donuts are prepared individually for each order. The donuts were excellent. Save room for the donuts. Overall, a great evening with service and food. I will return and would highly recommend this restaurant!! read more

I am not usually one to write poor reviews but in this case I felt I must share. I reached out to a couple people at this restaurant 3 weeks ago and haven't heard anything. My fiancé and I went to STK to try out their happy hour before a show we were seeing in the city. We got in after making a reservation and we're seated at a table. Quite a while after sitting down, our server came over and asked if we'd like sparkling or still--a very normal question at a steakhouse, to which we replied sparking. Unbeknownst to us, that choice was a $9 charge, a fact our server never disclosed to us. The portions of many things on the happy hour menu are quite small. The waygu taco about the size of a Pringle chip being the most notable. I ordered a Surf and Turf from the happy hour menu and was especially excited to try out the steak. Our server asked for my butter preference to which I picked the truffle butter. The question was posed in a way that seemed like the butter was included in my selection. Once again, was blindsided by the upcharge--$13 for that slice of butter on my steak. Ambiance wasn't bad, very much a "club" atmosphere with people walking all around the bar and loud music. Tables are close together, but not too bad to where we were bumping into anyone. The biggest disappointment we had in our experience was the undisclosed up-charges to things. Had we of been informed that things would've been an up-charge, we wouldn't be so upset by our experience. I have dined at STK in New York and Las Vegas. I loved it ! The food and service was great, so we made reservations for STK in Chicago for my son's graduation dinner. Terrible from beginning to end. Our server was deaf and couldn't hear anything we were saying. We had to repeat ourselves several times. Our steaks came and we had no steak knives, our salads came and no one offered fresh ground pepper. No one was budding our table and when asked for some plates to be removed we were told they're not supposed to remove dishes because it's the bussers job. My husbands lobster was not cooked thoroughly and was still cold. The waitress brought us the check and didn't ask if we would like some dessert or coffee. I asked for a manager at that point. Thank you for Daniel the manager who I spoke with and he made it right by taking 1/2 off our check. I appreciated his efforts but the evening was ruined at this point. This was the worst steak house I ever went to. Our waitresses name was Sandra, knowing we were upset at this point, she still had the nerve not to apologize and watched as my husband signed the tab to see what her tip was. We spilt a blue iceberg wedge salad, they offer a blue cheese butter bread with chive oil (the chive oil was soooooo good!), sweet corn pudding (I didn't want it to end), the 6oz & 10oz filet both cooked perfectly. The béarnaise sauce was perfect and I added mushrooms to the filet which wasn't on the menu. We ordered the Mac & cheese traditional. Next time I would try the other options. Just a bit plain for me for the traditional. The donuts for dessert were light and a perfect ending. Great martinis & espresso too! The staff is fantastic and kicking butt during a tough time. Dined here today for my birthday however it wasn't exactly the birthday experience I was hoping for. The restaurant was pretty empty plenty of tables and yet my partner and I got sat right in between two tables quite close to the table next to us where it felt like we were almost in their conversation and in their space. Felt a little squished. I understand waiters have different sections and must take turns however again the restaurant was slow. Despite the waiter checking our IDs for drinks and me making the note on the OpenTable reservation, my birthday was never acknowledged. We wanted to do the steak night deal found on their website however there was no menu for it and the waiter just listed out all our options and even noted that they were out of some of the menu items. When our food came out the steak came a little more on the rare side when we ordered it medium. This has more of a Vegas vibe type of steakhouse, it's upbeat - I like that but it's definitely a specific vibe. The food though wasn't quite up to par though. Ribeye fillet was a bit chewy and I got it medium rare. Filet minion also wasn't super tender, also medium rare. Blue wedge was good. Mashed potatoes were very watery almost soupy and overall kind of salty. Even the steaks were a bit on the salty side for me and I don't think I'm particularly sensitive to salted food. Not inedible by any means but considering the price I can't say the meal was memorable for the right reasons. Service was nice. This seems like a cool place to get drinks and a salad lol. read more
