The worst experience I have ever had and nothing has been done about it. Very uncaring about the clients here when it comes to something serious in a salon like lice. The day right after getting my hair color here (thinking it was actually plant based since it said 'aveda') and a blow out I started getting really itchy. My scalp got really itchy and I thought it was the ammonium they had in the hair color the whole time. I had been using hair color that's actually plant based with no ammonium and I thought my scalp had reacted to the ammonium from this salon since I have sensitive skin! I thought I had gotten a rash from it the whole time. After 3 weeks of itchiness a lice came out on my nail while scratching my head. And of course, they had multiplied now for 3 weeks. Thanks a lot strands salon (manager and owner) for doing nothing about this very serious issue and being very apathetic and rude about this. read more

At this point, after going three times, I would not recommend coming here if you have long hair and work hard to maintain it. You will likely leave with a lot of breakage. Long hair should be: -Combed gently from the tips and work your way up all the while holding the hair so if it does break it doesn't break from the top and is easier to grow back out.(I had a LOT of flyaways and broken hair from the top of my head after coming here). Its also recommend to use a wide tooth comb at first and not comb wet hair which is when its weakest. Dry it a bit first and then comb. -Washed with Luke warm to cold water. Hot water denatures the protein of the hair thereby weakening it. Cold water closes the cuticle and adds shine to the hair. What happens when you treat long hair poorly is that damage adds up and the lower half starts thinning out. It will get to a point when it looks bad and you have to cut it off. With short hair it doesn't matter as much. I'd recommend checking out Longhaircommunity.com If you do come I'd recommend seeing Candace. She very open to the way you like doing your hair and is very careful. Also I've had this weird experience where every time I came in, they didn't know what I was there for and thought I was there for a haircut or something else. I've had my share of Aveda locations both in Colorado and California. I've had good and bad experiences. When I say bad I only mean once and it was like over 10 years ago. Moved out here to Sactown area and tried a stylist. She was good but didn't give me what I was looking for in my hair. Fast forward to Strands in Sacramento and we have Allison . This was an amazing experience. I was so nervous to the point I made the stylist nervous to cut my hair. I haven't had my hair cut short in over a year and wanted to finally have my A-Line haircut back with a deep reddish to black hair color. She totally nailed it. She was willing to work together on getting what I wanted accomplished and she was extremely patient! Thank you so much! I'm actually really excited to come back over and over again. Even after finding out they have a salon down the street from me practically I will return to this location. Dominic was my massage therapist and he gives the most amazing massage! He is really in tune with your body and knows exactly where my knots are and is able to work them out. He also gives you a choice of essential oils which adds a lot to this relaxing massage. The massage studio is on the 2nd floor of the massage so it is in a relaxing and quiet space. I specifically made an appointment here because the nail technician, Catita, was available after 6pm. I booked Strands' most extensive pedicure, the Caribbean Therapy treatment, I felt a little embarrassed because a long time passed since my last pedicure. But Catita is such a sweet person. Her enthusiastic attitude is infectious. I was very happy to see that they don't use those germ-infested pedicure chairs. Instead Catita used a pretty copper bowl to soak my feet. Then there was a scrub and massage, followed by a mask. I was blissed-out by the time Catita painted my nails. All the body products are Aveda. There's also large selection of OPI polishes. While waiting for the polish to dry, Catita gave me a divine hand and arm massage. I paid $65. The price was a bit unreasonable for a pedicure. However, my feet needed a lot of work. And Catita made my feet smooth, my cuticles tamed, and my nails precisely painted. I also need to praise the receptionist, Jaime, for always being so friendly over the phone and in person. Thus, despite being pricey, I think it's definitely worth a second visit. read more

I recently visited the spa at Strands for a facial and massage. 5+ stars for the facial by Veronica. It was my first facial, and she did a great job explaining what she was doing while keeping it a relaxing environment. My skin definitely needed some help and I noticed a definite improvement in the days/weeks following the facial and abiding by the skincare regimen Veronica suggested. 4 stars for the massage by Dominic. I had bought a Groupon for the massage, which was a great value. The spa space is adorable. The spa is located above the salon in a converted apartment. I had balayage highlights done and a cut and I really loved it. I was charged $150 and felt like it was totally reasonable for what was done. The next day I was called by the front desk receptionist and was told that I was not charged correctly and I still owed another $100. I was very taken back by this. Of course I paid, because I don't believe that the stylist should lose money on this service because someone at the front desk made a mistake. However, I felt like the salon should have taken the hit for this because quite frankly I thought it was unprofessional and embarrassing that they needed to call a customer to have them pay more than what was originally charged. I'm not planning to come back for that reason alone. Which sucks because I did love my hair. read more

I got a haircut today from Allison, and it was my first time at Strand. I'm happy to give this place four stars. When I first came in I was a little worried because it looked super pretentious (I'm no up-scale beauty queen), but my initial hesitance was dispelled talking to the workers. They were kind and personable, and sounded fairly down-to-earth. I received a conditioning treatment and haircut. When I first sat down in the barbers chair, she gave what is apparently a regular 'pre-cut' massage. I don't care what anyone says about being gimmicky, that shit was fantastic. It lasted about three minutes, but I felt super relaxed afterwards. Allison saw my 'how I'd like it' picture and recreated it perfectly. I walked out feeling fabulous and refreshed. Hummm...I cheated on Tessa. I still think she did a great job cutting my hair, but the last time I went in for a bang trim it was the week before my wedding and I was freaking out about my hair. She was out sick so they pawned me off on someone else who seemed way annoyed that she had to do the trim. She barely cut them, was clearly pissed when I asked her to cut them a bit more (and even then barely did a thing), and I walked out feeling more disheveled than when I went in. I have issues with getting my "hair did" pretty much anywhere. On a typical day, I spend a good ten minutes on my hair, face, and choosing an outfit, so when I walk into a salon, makeup store, or Bebe, I feel awkwardly inadequate. Take the above all into account with how I must have felt walking into Strands fifteen minutes late for my appointment. I had spent those fifteen minutes driving in loops around the 3000-3600 blocks of Folsom Blvd, scanning awning after awning for Strands. Danielle, my stylist, was waiting at the front desk, pretty un-fazed. She showed me to her chair while another member of the staff offered me a drink. I'm too broke to afford massages anymore (the best thing about higher education was spending the loan money) I consider getting my hair washed by another person to be a luxurious spa treatment. Danielle was awesome; the shampooing included a nice forehead massage (or something) as I slipped into haircutting Zen. I arrived back at my chair, welcomed by an ice water with lemon in a pretty glass. Danielle asked me what I wanted; she let me wax philosophical on what my ideal cut would do for me, not what I would do for my ideal cut, and she got to work without even flinching. We got pretty chatty, practically talking about everything you can think of: our dogs (they're sooo cute!), our boyfriends (they're sooo stupid!), my hair (there's sooo much of it!) and everything in between. Before I knew it, the hair was covered with my hair and I felt fabulous. I was in shock for a while after seeing my transformation. I was so used to looking like a seventeen-year-old, I forgot what it was like to be grown up. Danielle did a great job of keeping me my own age, rather than aging me further like I had feared. I think she sensed I was weirded out about the whole thing, because she said I would need a few days to "get over it." As she was cutting, she realized she had taken off a good 8 inches in some places, and said she might go sorting through what she had cut off to donate. As I walked out, I felt a huge weight off (and not just all my hair I lost.) I looked and felt great, which is well worth the $45 for a cut. read more

I was driving back to my hometown in the bay area until I discovered Tony at Strands. I take my hair seriously so when I moved to Sacramento, it took me ten years to find a great stylist, Tony. Tony is patient, kind and lots of fun.Tony has been cutting my hair for six years now through two pregnancies. He is truly one of the best in the industry. I've gotten my hair cut by many celebrity hair stylists and expensive salons but most just don't know how to deal with different types of hair other than fine and blond. My hair is thick and course and very difficult to cut; and I make it more challenging because I am particular about the art of hair. I believe hair should frame and enhance the face. My visit here was about two months ago, since I needed a quick trim and my usual spot was not open. They were able to accommodate my request and fit me in during a lull in a typically busy Saturday afternoon. In addition, my current spot utilizes Aveda products, which I am a big fan of, so this was in alignment to hair products approach. They have a great corner space and the interior decorated with cozy comforts with seating as well as visual appeal. I started off with a quick wash and my stylist got to work right away. I left with a cut that incorporated a few more layers into my existing style so I had more swing and texture to my hair. She also cleaned up my bangs a little, but i made sure she knew I was trying to grow them out, which she respected. I was in/out in about an hour, which is a miracle since I have really long hair. I would be interested in their other services in the near future, so hopefully on my next trip out, might book such as a skin facial or mani-pedi. read more
