Based on the great reviews, we decided to give them a try. Thank goodness we did because Submariner did not disappoint!!! We ordered 2 combos; Philly Cheesesteak (of course!) with French Fries and I thought I'd try the Western Bacon Cheeseburger with Onion Rings. Also, we asked for an order of plain steak (that's used for the Philly Cheesesteak) for our very picky Yorkie. WOW...OH...WOW... The Philly Cheesesteak hit the spot (my guy was super happy!), my Western Bacon Cheeseburger was cooked perfectly (well done!) and had the just right amount of everything added to it. The FRENCH FRIES...soooooo good, we ate 1/2 of them in the car. Delicious, crispy and seasoned perfectly! The Onion Rings were yummy too. Then when it came down to the steak for our Yorkie, well let's just say that I didn't "have to" wash his plate because he licked it clean...lol...he's such a fussy eater so I'm thrilled that he enjoyed his dinner just as much as we did. I have been eating at the Submariner since the 70's. Stop doing the math I was a kid and my mother worked nearby! Since I don't live close I don't get to eat here as much as I would like. But I do make a point to stop by every couple of years and the food is always as good as I remember it. Ordering Tip #1: Get the Pepper Steak sandwich it's been their specialty since back in the day! Everyone agrees that the Philly Cheese Steak is awesome but all the food is great tasting and fresh here so you really can't go wrong. The staff is friendly, the restaurant is clean enough and there is plenty of parking. Plus its location makes it a great place to stop after a day at Venice Beach. Ordering Tip #2: Pick the Potato Wedges over the fries; they are wide and thick so they hold up the big flavors of the sandwiches. As an added bonus you can see celebrities eating here! I eat so many sandwiches (good and meh) that I feel like I'm 80% sub. What sets apart a sandwich for me specifically is the bread. So I had an event to attend with girlfriend and this place was just down the street, so I figured what the hell let's give it a shot. The service was good, ordered and got food cooked fast and it was good. The food was good if I'm in the area again I will go here again for sure. The burger and fries was really good and cheap too, I figured it would be expensive like a lot of places in LA. Ended up getting garlic bread also but that wasn't that good, in my opinion it was a little too greasy and that's why I'm not giving it 5 stars otherwise I would. They have a large menu to choose from, it's not just a burger shop. They got pizza, burgers, subs, bowls, salads etc.... I'll have to give their Philly cheese steak a try next time I hear they are known for it. read more

Came here for lunch. The atmosphere changes the second you walk in the door. It is hotter and greasier. You begin to sweat if you stay too long, but I wouldn't be staying. I ordered the philly cheesesteak. I ordered it like this: "steak with cheese, grilled onions, nothing else." The cheese came melted so that it entwined with meat and there was enough of each in every bite. The onions didn't make it into every bite, but when they did, it was all worth it. It's hard to hold anything against a great mom and pop shop with neighborhood history that consistently dishes up good and reasonably priced sandwiches. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Submariners seems to have a bit more real estate than they need, but that doesn't take away from what is a cozy atmosphere put forth by the servers and staff. This is clearly a mom and pop operation that runs smooth. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $8.95 got me a good sized Philly Cheesesteak with everything on it, and it easily covered a meal and a half. Good value. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? This wasn't the best Philly Cheesesteak that I've ever had, and I think it could have benefited from a bit of kick in the form of black pepper, hot sauce, or jalapenos. I came here on my lunch break having a hard craving for a meatball sub and trusted the great reviews they had. I think the service was great and the restaurant was very clean. Unfortunately I was left extremely underwhelmed and disappointed, at best the sub was probably a 2/10! the meatballs had an odd texture, the bread was soggy and everything just kinda mixed together to an almost mushy texture. We were in the area and decided to stop by for lunch. The owner and his wife are very kind. We had the Philly cheesesteak (I got mine without the veggies) and the chicken cheesesteak. The bread is grilled with butter and covered in mayo; the provolone cheese was nice and melted, and the meat was seasoned well. Overall my sandwich was delicious and the onion rings were amazing and crunchy! I hate it when you bite into an onion ring and the entire inner onion comes out, none of that nonsense here. Hole in the wall shop. Philly cheese steaks didn't feel greasy enough - and I'm saying this sober! I guess what I'm trying to say was that it wasn't decadent enough. I guess I should be happy that it's less calories. But hey when I have committed to eating a cheese steak, I want to go all out. It's sorta like if you know you're gonna eat that bowl of ice cream, you want the full fat stuff! Not the diet/light whatever version. Chicken wings were awesome - super crisp. The food here is really tasty - not something you would except of a place like it. The staff is friendly even though there isn't much communication with them. The only reason I give them 4 stars is because I had to wait for about 20 minutes for my food, which seemed pretty long.
