There's a small bar and several booths and small tables. We tried their Kheow Wahn - stewed chicken (bone-in) with eggplant and green curry, Pad Tua - sauteed green bean in garlic sauce, and their Pad Thai with chicken. All the dishes were extremely flavorful, not overcooked, with just the right amount of spice. My only complaint and it is a tiny complaint is that the green curry dish had very little chicken. Rather we got the bottom of the drumstick which had no meat. I also tried their Thai Iced Coffee which I didn't quite care for. For me, it just tasted like watered down old coffee with milk and sugar. Bottomline, I'll return again. read more

Good food, good restaurant, good visit. Me and a few friends went in for dinner, so since I tried everyone's dishes I have a lot to review. First food, then desserts, then staff, then restaurant. Kanom Jeeb (starter) is 3 steamed dumplings. These we're great, obviously hand made filling and dipping sauce. I think its a little pricey just for 3 of them ($5) but I don't regret ordering them, they were that good. Moo Pad Ka Tiam (entree) is pork that has been cooked with lemon grass and comes with a side of rice. This dish was really good (I was jealous of my friend since he ordered it and I didn't). Great flavor and really tasty. Tom Kha Kai (starter) is a bowl of chicken in a coconut soup. My friend ordered this starter as his meal. This has a very bright and light flavor throughout the whole dish, strong coconut taste. Does not come with a side of rice. Tom Zaab (entree) is a bowl of spicy beef soup with alot of bean sprouts and vegetables. If you do not have a palate for spicy food then do not get it, it is a manageable level of heat though. This was the dish I ordered and honestly I didn't enjoy it. I'm just not big on vegetables and there is a lot of them in the dish. I can absolutely tell the dish is a good one though, but I (a person who doesn't like veggies) wouldn't order it again. Fried Banana is great. It comes out looking like a spring roll (4 of them) of sorts but on the inside is some type of banana created filling. On top of these rolls is a nice amount of honey and toasted coconut. This dessert was awesome. Sticky Rice with Mango was good. The sticky rice is sweet somehow (I don't know how it is cooked) and I didn't eat the mango (I don't like fruit either) but my friends said it was really fresh and great tasting. Lava Cake isn't on the menu but the waitress told us about it. So it is small circular cake (kinda looks like a torte) with some chocolate sauce on top, and a couple scoops of ice cream comes on the side. Both parts of the dish we're amazing. The cake was very chocolaty and the ice cream was very smooth and obviously made fresh. Staff is very soft spoken and polite, definitely creates a very calm atmosphere. I don't think our drinks were even capable of becoming empty because of how on top of refilling drinks they were. They bring out all the dishes as you order them and remove them as soon as you are done. It wasn't an intrusive way though, honestly I can't remember them taking most of the plates because of how quiet and smooth they were. Restaurant is styled very well, nice and clean. Sugar palm? All I know is that I'm gonna need a sugar daddy after eating here. Wallet = drained. Like holy moly, Thai is expensive but c'mon, Sugar Palm.. The portions were so obviously skimp AND overpriced. Some restaurants skimp you out but they at least have the common decency to create some kind of clever illusion to make it seem like you aren't getting skimped out. For example, I ordered the lamb masaman curry for myself which consisted of three small pearl onions, three small potatoes, and 5 or so pieces of leg of lamb (and of course the curry sauce itself). ALMOST $20. Like.. what (it was decent though). I mean don't get me wrong, the food is pretty good. The fire cracker calamari was bangin' (but sadly over priced as well..). Sugar Palm bring back the real taste and lift up standard of Thai food in Fairfax area. Only simple one page menu and all of them are excellent, flavorful and above par. Recommend Pork satay was excellent,came with peanut sauce, a few bread and sweet pickle ( wasn't in the menu) Salt and pepper calamari, perfectly cooked with a nice touch of garlic and chili. There is a recent review about this restaurant that addresses diversity and treatment of a black patron. It is unfortunate that a restaurant that I frequent 3-4 days/week has gotten such a review. I am a black woman and I was taken aback by the experience that this customer had. Customers of MANY races/ethnicities also frequent this business. We are all treated with respect. We respect one another, and look forward to gathering there after work. The staff knows exactly what we like and they cater to all of us. Generally speaking, I cannot subscribe to the idea that any discrimination happens in this restaurant. What I can subscribe to, is the idea that how cultures interact with other cultures can be complicated--especially when it comes down to people as individuals. Not everyone knows how to interact with others who do not look like them. This does not necessarily mean that a patron is being mistreated. I am not making excuses for this restaurant, but I'd like to think that I know the staff and owner well enough to respond to the previous review. I know that as a black woman married to a black man, and a frequent flyer customer--Sugar Palm respects all people. We are a family at this restaurant. I cannot downplay another customer's experience...whether it is accurate or not because that was his/her personal experience. I ordered spicy basil rice, which I ordered many times in the past. I ordered it this past Thursday April 18, and the was so spicy and hot, I couldn't even eat it or enjoy it. Came for lunch with coworkers. It was typical Thai food that tasted fine and had plenty of options, but the service was nonexistent. It took 5 minutes for someone to ask what drinks we wanted and a few more minutes for us to receive them. When leaving it seemed like there was no one on the floor because it took 10 minutes after we finished for us to finally wave someone down for the check. We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday and were promptly greeted and sat. The restaurant was very clean and nicely decorated. Restrooms were very nice and clean as well. The menu is vast and the REALLY nice thing is that they only had Thai food; no Chinese or Sush!! We ordered some basic favs, like Ka Prao Rice, Pad Thai, Prik King and Ga Tiam Beef and all were AMAZING! Their Por Pia Todd (spring rolls) were nice, but not the best we've ever had at a Thai place. I got the massaman lamb curry (labelled C7 on the menu, $16.95), the cake of the day (chocolate in this case, $7.00), and orange juice ($4.00). The sales tax was $1.68 and the tip for the driver was $4.44. I am on Franconia about a mile west of Telegraph and I had the meal in a little less than a mile. The lamb was stewed in curry, potatoes, and onions. The ingredients for Thai massaman curry seem to be similar to those of Indian curry (https://minimalistbaker.com/easy-1-pot-massaman-curry/), but I would say that the taste is intermediate between Indian and Chinese curry with Indian being more spicy and Chinese less so. I ordered the Tom Kha which my friend said was, "good although not the best she had every had". Red curry with beef is what I ordered and I was very impressed with the taste. It was very good, rich with the taste of coconut milk and then spicy at the same time. I really enjoyed it. The tofu was very good as well, it came with a sweet chili sauce. I got to taste some of my friends' food and they ordered pad thai and drunken noodles, which was equally good. The taste was authentic and didn't taste like they altered it or anything. I also got the Thai tea which was made well, not overwhelmingly sweet or anything. It saddens me to write this review after patronizing this restaurant for many years, giving it a good review previously (03/23/14) and recommending it to friends in the area, but my recent experience was poor. When my friend and I arrived at the restaurant we were greeted by the young heavy set staff member who seated us, took our initial drink orders and later, our appetizer order. During the initial interaction and subsequent interactions with this staff member, she would only make eye contact with my Caucasian friend while refusing to look at me (black) even while taking my order. The two other young staff members, however, couldn't have been kinder. They made eye contact with both my friend and I and treated us with equal respect. They took our main course orders (I think one of the young ladies was training the other one) and provided good service. I travel a lot internationally for work and for fun; some of my trips have taken me to Asia. Unfortunately, my experience in Asian countries and in Asian businesses domestically has been more like my experience with the first staff member than with the other two ladies. It doesn't matter that the Caucasians I am with are dressed the same as me, younger than me and often my subordinates at work, the poor treatment is frequently the same. I usually experience this kind of behavior from older people from the aforementioned culture, but it is disheartening when I see this behavior in the younger generation. The younger generation is supposed to be more educated and experienced with dealing with people from other cultures. This staff member needs to realize that this is a diverse area with professionals of all colors (including black) that deserve equal respect; she needs to be retrained. If she continues with this type of behavior she should be terminated. I am willing to give Sugar Palm another try since they are one of the few Asian businesses in the area that seem to respect customers from all cultures. However, if this happens again I will not patronize this establishment any further. read more
