The service is very good here, and it gets very busy at lunch or dinner time. The tables are super close to each other which is kinda made me a bit uncomfortable especially during pandemic, mask is not required and no temperature check nor vaccination verification either despite the rising covid variant cases. I'm sitting like 2 ft away from the next table. I don't think I will come back again until they have more strict protocol. Food is good, everything is a little bit over citric and acidic. Some white fish pieces only had some salt on top that doesn't not bring out the flavor of the fish, it tastes very blend. The fish itself are very fresh but without the condiments it doesn't not bring out the best of the flavor. And we both ordered the don't think trust me which is $65/pp but it only just has two extra shrimp nigiri, we thought it would get more surprises since there's no menu but what a disappointment. Been wanting to try Sugarfish for a while after loving Kazunori for all these years; a bit let down with the food/more like a 3.5/3.75, but gave 4 stars for benefit of doubt. We arrived at ~720p on a Thursday and there were 32 parties ahead of us; was surprised because Google said not to expect any wait time, so just be warned. We decided to wait it out upstairs since we spent the whole day exploring and were called/sat ~905p. As many have mentioned the restaurant is super dark, but its a nice vibe and cozy with the candles. We both ordered the "Don't think. Just eat. Trust Me" and the service begun very fast with the edamame, which definitely tasted like edamame ha. The tuna sashimi course was first and was honestly just ok. For the extra $16 compared to "Nozawa Trust Me" seems like you get yellowtail upgraded to an additional toro, sea bass upgraded to pink lobster, the crab hand roll upgraded to lobster handroll, and an addition of eel nigiri. A decent upgrade, but wish they included some kind of uni or scallop. The fish quality is above average, but honestly either the fish is cut thin or there is too much rice, I could not distinguish the taste of the fish that well. No bite from the night was really that memorable. The handrolls were great as always just like Kazunori with great contrast from the warm rice, crunchy seaweed, and cold fish. My gf didn't like the additional eel course that much, but I thought it was fine. I'm glad I got to try it and I think for the price its still a pretty good "bargain", but I don't think I would come back and will probably stick to a 6 set from Kazunori. read more

NOT GLUTEN FREE FRIENDLY. Never had any issues at Sugarfish in SoHo but this one really let me down. I bought a gluten free friend because the SoHo location was always great about it. Here they had no tamari, and made her feel really bad about asking for a little lemon, salt or vinegar. The manager came out and basically berated us about how it would be too costly for them to accommodate that and that the kitchen is really locked down on what they can use. It's okay to just say no and not make someone feel bad. She just wanted to add a little moisture and flavor to her food. The food was fine. They also kept saying "gluten safe" which is hilarious because it was gluten FREE but not a safe space for those with celiac or GF. read more

I don't eat a lot of sushi so I was hesitant to spend the cash at the famed Sugarfish. I was extremely fortunate to receive a "To-Go Trust Me" bento box at work for a client meeting, and suddenly I UNDERSTOOD THE HYPE! The fish was so so fresh, and melted in your mouth. While the box has instructions on how to best pair each fish with the sauce options, it was difficult to distinguish each fish and I know I definitely did a few things wrong. A few days later, I dined in with a friend and WOW! The experience in-person is delightful. First, we arrived around 11:30 to beat the crowd, and was seated immediately. I again ordered the "Trust Me" lunch option and they serve each fish already prepped with the recommended sauce and toppings, so that you don't have to add any on top. I loved this as I was able to experience each bite exactly as the chef wanted. The menu is also slightly different than the to-go option, as it includes hand rolls (these are meant to be eaten immediately, else the seaweed will go soggy). In addition, the meal was much more affordable than I thought, especially for high quality fish. The longer: I ordered by telephone for pickup during the coronavirus pandemic. I called on the earlier side (5pm) but had no problem getting through. Pickup was perfectly on time and organized. There's tape on the ground and tables for contactless pickup. Whole pickup experience took five minutes. The FOOD. Omg. The sushi was on-point. We had a trust me nozawa box and added the lobster hand cut and toro hand cut, plus large scallop and salmon sushi. I'm quite baffled why Sugarfish received such great reviews. Perhaps their review from the NY Times helped propel them over other sushi establishments but the concept of fish being wrapped over warm rice as their selling point did not do the trick for me. Instead, it left me feeling unsatisfied and confused. I came here for lunch on a Monday and made sure to arrive 5 min before 11am (opening time) as I read a crowd will form very quickly, which it did. Once inside, the staff greeted us and seated everyone and I have to say, the restaurant filled up fast. I sat at the "sushi bar" area, which is not exactly a sushi bar area. Instead it's an area where the staff prep their side dishes and prepare teas and tap water for their guests. Once seated I was presented with the menu and was immediately told which one was their best seller. I went with their "Trust Me" pre-set menu and immediately their sushi started coming out fast. Their organic edamame was cold. Not room temperature but cold as in their soy bean has been sitting in the fridge for quite sometime. It was also cooked in salt water so while eating it, all I tasted was salt water combined with cold beans (not good). When I was done, they started serving the nigiri I ordered. I could feel the waitress watching me and eat so she can bring out the next one right after. The nigiri was okay. I didn't like how warm and sour the rice was. It over powered the light natural flavor of the fish and the fish was not buttery. Instead it tasted more mushy and lacked texture and body. As for my hand rolls, I found it interesting how my waitress told me to not wait and it should be eaten immediately. At first, I didn't know why but once I took a bite, I knew it's because the warm rice would just ruin the whole experience should it sit any longer as the seaweed will get rubbery and the seafood inside will start cooking. Overall, I can't see myself coming back. I didn't get to see any of the sushi chef prepare my sushi. Instead peeking through the kitchen window, all I saw was a sushi factory like kitchen of people prepping food in the back. Lastly, I dislike that teas are not complimentary and I dislike that I was rushed and I disliked that their rice is over powered by the vinegar. The service was good overall but could've been more attentive. The ambiance was dark and interior was well designed. The bathroom was a pocket door! We got a preselected sushi menu with a hand roll. The hand roll was so perfect. It was hot rice wrapped in a crispy seaweed served immediately. The sushi comes out right as it's made so the timing is staggered when you and your party receives the food, but that just means it's ultra fresh! I have heard about Sugarfish for so long, and I am glad that I was able to check it out one weekday afternoon for lunch. I had just finished an interview and was looking for a spot to have a solo lunch. I figured I could sit at the bar for a nice experience. I got there about 1:30pm on a Friday, and I was 13th in line for a party of one at the bar. It was definitely packed in there! I put my name down with the hostess, and walked around while I waited for a text message to tell me that I was near the top of the list. Once my seat was ready, I was taken to the back and seated at the bar area. The restaurant is pretty big, and like the atmosphere with the minimalistic wooden touches. Sugarfish is known for their premium sushi, and they have three main "prefixe" options: Trust Me, Trust Me Lite, and Nowaza Trust Me. Each one has a signature selection of sushi, but you can also order al a carte and from their specials menu. I decided to go with the Trust Me and added an Anago sushi (because I can't go to sushi without having eel!). I must say that Sugarfish is definitely worth the hype. The price might seem high, but I have never had better quality sushi in my life. The fish literally melted in my mouth and was so flavorful on its own. They recommend not using any additional soy sauce and eating right away, and I followed their instructions to the T without regrets. The staff was super friendly and efficient with bringing my dishes and clearing my plates. They explained everything to me since it was my first time, and they were also very personable with all of the guests from first timers to the regulars. Great Sugarfish location with the same consistent quality as the others. Like the other restaurants, this also has a dimly lit interior that makes it a great date spot. We came here around 7 pm on the weekend, so it was full but we didn't have to wait long for a spot. They have a spacious waiting area on the second floor (this is also where the bathrooms are). The waitstaff was also very nice. Nozawa Trust Me ($56) - This was the second tier on the dinner menu. While it's pricy, the fish was high quality. Everything was super tender and melted in your mouth. The waitstaff did a great job of timing the dishes too, since they brought it out plate by plate. I was definitely full by the end of this. Nozawa Sake ($15) - This was 6 ounces, so one bottle per person is about appropriate. It was strong enough to get the lightest touch of tipsy but not much more. The staff is very knowledgeable on each dish with a special care for explaining. It was a wonderful surprise to see each dish as they came out with how nice they were plated. I got a small course but, I wish I got the largest one. Things to note here, they do not take reservations. If you are doubtful that you can handle the largest course, I recommend still getting it. After seeing endless photos and videos of people eating here and getting that iconic take-out box of sushi, I've been dying to try this place to see what the hype is. We waited for about 30-45 minutes before being seated at the bar. We ordered the Trust Me ($41) which comes with: edamame, tuna sashimi, albacore + salmon sushi, toro hand roll, yellowtail + sea bream + sea bass sushi, and a crab hand roll. Great value for the quality of the fish and presentation! The sushi here isn't as mind blowing or fresh as it is at an actual omakase restaurant or higher end sushi establishment, but I still thought the flavor and preparation of each part of the set was really good for the price (only $41 since they do not take tip). My favorites were the tuna sashimi with ponzu and chives and the crab hand roll. Service was fast and attentive but it did feel like they were slightly rushing us to eat and leave since they were so busy. Recently returned to try the "Don't Think, Just Eat" at Sugarfish. The "Don't Think, Just Eat" menu is very similar to the Nozawa menu: You start off completely the same with edamame and tuna sashimi. The second plate comes with 2 pc of Snapper, 2 pc of Salmon, and 2 pc of Sea Bream. "Don't Think, Just Eat" brings another element of preparation to the fishes to showcase different flavor pairings. For example, you get one standard piece of the salmon with sesame seeds and another comes with a thin piece of kombu or kelp As for the sea bream, you get one with a shiso leaf and for the snapper, you can one piece prepared with soy and ginger. Then, you get a toro handroll, which they tell you to eat right away before the seaweed gets soggy. (in both menus) In the "Don't Think, Just Eat", you get salmon sashimi in a ponzu sauce and topped with sesame seeds, very similar to the tuna sashimi. Too similar to the tuna sashimi, so this was kind of a miss for me. The next plate comes with 2 pc of Albacore, 2 pc of Shrimp, and 2 pc of Scallop (only in "Don't Think, Just Eat"). The shrimp was prepared in two different ways - one which is quickly parboiled topped with sesame and second is the Nozawa-style, which was my favorite piece of the night because of the sweetness of the shrimp. The scallop was also prepared in two ways - one was the standard scallop piece and the second was the large bay scallops with mayo. The large bay scallops piece was also a miss for me, just average. In the Nozawa menu, you get a crab handroll and the last piece of the menu is a daily special (2pc). The last piece of the "Don't Think, Just Eat" is a lobster handroll. So all in all, you really only get one extra plate of sashimi. After just been at Sushi Nao, I prefer the different flavor profiles at Sushi Nao. However, Sugarfish gave a valiant effort. Some of the pieces were a hit or miss for me, but still a very interesting menu from the Nozawa or Trust Me Menu. read more
