After taking a few minutes to find it (located behind Harvest Bread) we were presently surprised when we first walked in. *atmosphere-4 Beautifully decorated with thy cozy feel very dark look and low/dim lighting. Perfect for a date night! There seems to be plenty of seating with a mix of tables and long bench. Very tasteful decor and what is definitely a big place the have separated the spaces perfectly. *food-4 They earned a 3 in my book but the extra star for having a vegetarian menu. I ordered the arancini which was $6 for three golf ball sized risotto balls. They had decent flavor, definitely mushrooms. They had a good crust without tasting too fried, wish it came with a marinara or some kind of sauce. I ordered the eggplant which came over veggies $18 and it was just ok, nothing impressive. Eggplant was thick sliced and crunchy (per the waiter its baked) with only a tiny amount of cheese and veggies. No real sauce so I felt like I was just eating crunchy eggplant with some veggies--very bland I had to add a lot of salt (they also need to put salt and pepper on the tables, nothing but a candle). If I do come back I wouldn't order it again, maybe a pasta next time. My Aunt got the scallops piccata and when I paid I was shocked to see $28 but she enjoyed it so it's all good. Three very large scallops over a sort of lasagna style flat noodle. Scallops looked like they were cooked perfectly, without trying it. Our waiter brought bread, four slices to be exact with olive oil and parm sprinkled on it. Best thing of all was a bourbon bread pudding I brought home for my husband. My boyfriend and I went to Sugo to celebrate his birthday and have a romantic dinner for two. This place did not disappoint. I had made us reservations through Open Table (score free dining points!) but there was a bit of a wait when we first got there. It turns out they were hosting a large party and had some difficulty filling reservations on time. No matter - 15 minutes later and we were on our way to food heaven! We were seated in a room with a large table of about 15 people and one additional table of two. We started out with cocktails and I highly recommend the Aviation. Light and refreshing with a hint of lavender, this gin creation is a winner all around. My date got something heavier which was also really tasty - his was a bourbon drink with orange notes and a hint of bitters. Our server was kind and extremely passionate about their food. She was knowledgeable about all of their specials and was happy to explain anything on the menu. We started off with the crispy calamari and red peppers. I've had calamari before, but this dish knocked it out of the park! The calamari was lightly breaded and cut into manageable bite-sized pieces. Fried red-pepper strips and lemons (yes - these were fried too) brightened up the dish. The sauce included had some kick and really rounded out the dish well. For entrees, my date got Aunt Lena's chicken which are chicken breasts stuffed with cheese and wrapped in prosciutto. Pure decadence! For my dish, I was a little disappointed that they had taken the Beggars Purses off the menu. I asked my server why and she told me that she would be more than happy to check if they would be able to still make it for me. It was such a popular dish that they usually have the ingredients on hand in case someone wants to order off-menu. I crossed my fingers and was ecstatic when she told me the good news and loved that I could still get my favorite dish of theirs. Creamy housemade four cheese pasta folded into the shapes of purses with a smooth alfredo-tomato sauce on top. Always a winner in my book. Throughout the course of the dinner, the party of 15 or so next to us was getting pretty rowdy - think a bunch of couples in their late 30s/early 40s out for a night on the town away from the kids. It didn't really bother my date and I all that much, but you could tell the other couple at the additional two top was not amused. Sugo and their staff were incredible. They picked up on the fact that the guests were being a bit over the top and irritating fellow diners. At the end of our meal, one of the managers came to our table to apologize for the commotion and let us know they were providing us a free dessert sampler to make up for our fellow diners' behavior. What?! Free dessert?! I'm in! They gave us a sampler platter - that's right - platter of their most popular dishes. They included chocolate cupcakes, cannolis, and gelato. Each one was heavenly! Each item complimented the others and were a great finish to our meal. The server was fantastic and able to take care of our needs and make sure our cocktails and water glasses were always full. The hospitality we received at Sugo went a long way and the owners are regulars - they often go table to table to check on diners and make sure everyone is receiving great service. I live nearby and have frequented this restaurant on occasion - every 2-3 months since it opened so for awhile. On my last visit, we were on a date (just the two of us) and they put me at a table where I was squeezed between a wall and a gentleman's elbow at a somewhat vocal 4 top. I asked if we could sit at another table and they quickly set a table a few feet away in front of the fireplace and sat us there. A much better table and exactly what I was looking for. I was looking forward to a nice dinner and nice atmosphere. I thanked the hostess. Then the waiter came. He sarcastically said he just wanted to make SURE we were happy with this table. I said yes, thank you, it was very good. A little sarcasm but not a big deal. Then, when he came back, he lectured us on how it was about the food and not the table. We left. Not going to spend my money with a place that has rude staff. You'd think they'd be trying to provide good service as two neighboring restaurants have just shut down. Guess not. I came here today for a birthday dinner. They set up a nice private area for a table of 12. The seating was very conveniently set. Plenty of room! The server, Skylar, was right there to give us a fresh cup of water and asked for drinks. I, of course, opted for wine. Service was very quick and the server was outgoing and attentive. The owner even came by and talked with us which was very nice. Now for the food... The tagliatelle appetizer was delicious! It was like a noodle stuffed with cheese and marinara sauce. Small portion but was worth every bite. I got to try a friends appetizer: fried gnocchi? I've never tried gnocchi before. It wasn't my favorite but my friend really enjoyed it. The crispy artichokes were not quite what I expected. I love artichokes and it sounded good. The small plate came out and I didn't even realize it was my dish. It was mostly salad with a few battered artichokes. I liked the artichokes but thought this dish would be better with more artichokes and less salads. The menu description is a little misleading. The salad was lightly dressed with citrus based dressing. My main dish was the special for the day: scallops! These were amazing. They were gi-normous!! Perfectly cooked and seasoned. They are slightly battered with a fluffy egg batter. Each scallop is placed over a pasta sheet and tomatoes. Everything on the plate went very well together. I would order this again. Overall, this was a very nice place, especially for a dinner party. They were very accommodating. Met some friends here for dinner and was very pleased. Good service, good food, management and the owner were all over and making sure people were happy. We started with the bacon wrapped figs.. Not your norm, very small but nice presentation and very tasty. I got the steak everyone was ranting about rare and it was quite good. Ok, so I can't keep quiet about Sugo again. I don't normally update a review that's already 5 stars but Sugo's done it again and I need (yes, need) to let everyone not already on their mailing list know about it. So if you deem to pass out your email address to Sugo, you'll be rewarded from time to time by emails advertising Mr. C's famous cooking classes. Take them!!! My boyfriend and I have now done two, they were so great - and I doubt it will end with that. We've now had instruction from the master in making his famous meatballs and last night, Frederico's pork braciole. Oh. My. Goodness! First of all, if you've never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. and Mrs. C, you're missing out on two of the most charismatic and charming people running a restaurant today. And watching Mr. C standing at the front of a room holding 20 or so people, talking with his hands, drinking wine, telling us stories about growing up, how difficult it is nowadays to find locally grown garlic, and how marinara sauce is an American misnomer is a show unto itself. And this is how the cooking classes go: you get Mr. C plus his sole meat supplier from Sausage World, two glasses of wine, everything you need to make your meal, and entertaining, detailed instruction the whole time (plus recipe cards after if you choose to try and undertake a recreation of the deliciousness at home). Once everyone's made their meatballs or pork bracioles or whatever the dish is, the entrees are whisked off to bake in the kitchen (numbers on the dishes help keep track of who made which entree), and chefs are ushered out to big group tables to chat, drink, order appetizers and make new friends. Usually, we'll split an appetizer like the bacon wrapped dates or the rucola salad plus complimentary bread brushed with olive oil to tide us over until the main dishes are ready. And once they're ready, you receive your dish with beautiful presentation on a plate plus fresh, house made pasta with a simple tomato and olive oil sauce (it seems too easy but it's absolutely delicious), and everyone samples their culinary prowess. I have never been disappointed, and I've always had to leave with a doggy bag. The portions sizes are easily enough for two people or two meals. They are delicious though, no doubt about it. If you haven't tried Sugo before, I can't recommend this restaurant enough for spectacular Italian food, and if you want a really fun idea for a date night, or you want to add some fancy new food to your repetoire, sign up to find out when Mr. C's next cooking class is. Best salmon i think I've ever had. I'm a quasi pescatarian so I've had my fair share of salmon. It is wild caught, never frozen, and on the table within three days and boy, can you tell. It was delightful. My friend had Aunt Lena's chicken and it too was very good. For the antipasta we shared the chicken croquette and the spanakopita. Both were extremely tasty. The eggplant parmesan had some kind of spice in the sauce that tasted like anise, and maybe it was. Anyway, not a likeable spice for me. The martinis came out 3/4 full, but charged a hefty price for them. And they didn't even bring out a dessert for him for his birthday. Very disappointed with the meal. I won't be back. We're new to the area and two different people recommended this place to us in the same weekend. So we went. And our lives changed. The food is incredible: we had the shrimp scampi and Aunt Lena's chicken. The chicken was the most sublime, tasty comfort food I have ever eaten. You know that scene in Ratatouille where the food critic takes a bite and is transported back to his childhood? It was like that: I took a bite and everything stopped. The tastes were magical. Everything was so very good. Very different Caesar salad that was fresh and crunchy and tasty. The spanakopita appetizer tasted as if someone's Grandma were in the kitchen sharing her secret recipe - some of the flakiest crust I've ever seen. The canoli dessert, well, our eyes rolled back in our heads. It was the perfect combination of crispy creamy chocolatey goodness. It was my first visit here and the waitress was very friendly. Restaurant is kind of hidden behind building. Owner came over right when we got sat and said he would help With anything we needed which I thought was super nice as they were very busy. He came over and checked on us several times. I ordered the ciacci red wine and it was delicious. I usually can't even finish one glass of red and I had two and could have kept going. We order the meatball and dates as an appetizer. I loved the meatball it was very tasty and my husband and I were battling who would get the last piece. Dates were good but nothing I have to order again. We split the truffle pasta which is a large papadelle and very light. We probably didn't need to share. The bread was so hard! Ouch.. it still hurts! And then came the eggplant Parmesan for $18 ????? I expected it be dusted with gold - LOL... It was a mere 4 small piece entree with a decent sauce and a bit of mozzarella... And we could order as many bread baskets we liked - we were content with just 1 as the bread was so hard and crusty to eat. The dessert - a triple sorbet (Raspberry, mango and ???) with white chocolate coating and a scoop of fresh cream was delicious... This place is hit or miss in several ways. First, some of the dishes are excellent, but some of them are just swamped in cheese. I mean, like, you will be fishing your food out of cheese. This is a repeating situation that has happened for numerous people I know with numerous dishes. Then again, with some other dishes, you can really get something really solid. The one I got last night that was swamped was the beef tenderloin tapas with goat cheese. There was a good bit of tenderloin, and I enjoyed it, but there was just an absurd amount of goat cheese. When I was done, a goat cheese graveyard was left behind. Anyone who ate all of that stuff would have ended the night in a hospital. Anyways, the service can also be a bit strange. I don't know. The place just seemed off/inconsistent to me and it isn't the first time we have had a hard time enjoying ourselves at Sugo. It is just a little bit stressful and awkward. Five generations of the Castellucci family have been restaurateurs. The fourth generation, Frederic Castellucci II, manages the Sugo Restaurant over in Roswell, at Clocktower Place. This newer Sugo is run by the fifth generation, Frederic Castellucci III. With a little history out of the way, let's get into the review. Sugo has a rather healthy reputation based on its Roswell location, but I don't think enough people have found the one off Medlock Bridge. This could be because the restaurant is hidden around back behind a rather upscale strip mall. But I'm not here to talk about location, but to heap massive amounts of praise on Sugo for their food, their hospitality and their service. I can say honestly that I've not had customer service this good, this personable and professional, in years. Quite possibly, this was the best I've been treated since moving to Atlanta in 1995. My first year here, I went to a company-paid dinner at Chops in Buckhead. That service was really good, but nothing like this. We were greeted by the manager, who then seated us at the corner he called his favorite. If you visit, surely he will tell you why, just like he told us. The wait staff was very knowledgeable, which was doubly-impressive given the sheer volume of ingredients mentioned for every daily special. They knew their wine, too, which helped. The food was spectacular. Each dish is purportedly from a family recipe, a claim I wouldn't dare disbelieve. The spanakopita was far better than any I've had elsewhere, but just enough to tide us over until the main dish. For that. I believe I had Aunt Lena's Chicken, though it might've been some other Aunt. No matter. What I ate was just this side of perfect. Luscious chicken with a walnut pesto underneath, all covering pasta laced with ... I don't know what ... I think there were parsnips in there. It was all wonderful. And for dessert? Cannolis. A dish of little ones, not the big burrito-sized things you can get elsewhere. These, I've been told since, are the real deal, little bite-sized rolls made so you don't have to deal with shattered dessert from your first bite. So go. Enjoy. If you find yourself in this part of Atlanta and are wanting something a little different for food I would recommend this place. Although the restaurant claims to be Italian and Greek it has a menu unlike I have ever seen at ANY Italian or Greek restaurant. There are an assortment of tapas to start your meal off with or order several and make a meal of them like I did. The entrees are quite impressive with several ingredients and flavors in each. The fried asparagus was delicious as was the calamari tapas plate. The tomato sauce that surrounds the stuffed calamari is so flavorful and is perfect for dipping the bread that they give you in. The spanikopita was a bit off for me. I like mine to be less creamy and have more feta in it. And the caprese salad was good but I wish they had left out the lettuce and had kept to only a salad with tomatoes, basil and mozzerella. I like to patronize local businesses especially family owned. I can't even drive by this place without my mouth watering. The biggest tip I can give about this place: register your anniversary on their website. If you reserve a table around that time and specify it's for your special day, you're taken in to this private room. There's only seating for six, and you get your own server. What I thought was truly amazing about this place: they all sign a card wishing you a happy anniversary! The little champagne toast they bring you also doesn't hurt. The Roswell location was a very special place for my wife and I because it was where we've had many special dates, dinners and even our wedding reception. Last night, I decided it would be nice to go this location since the Roswell location had closed and now I wished I had not. I made a reservation for 7PM and noted that we were there to celebrate our 6th anniversary. At 7:15 PM, I asked the hostess if she knew that we had a reservation for 7 and she snapped "so does everyone else standing around in the crowded waiting area!". We were finally seated at 7:20 in the bar area, a far cry from where you would expect to be seated for a romantic dinner to celebrate your anniversary which I noted when I made the reservation. We were continuously having people at the bar back into our space or staring at what we were eating when they were on their way to the bathroom which was a short distance away.. After waiting almost an hour for our entrees, which were very good, our waitress seemed frustrated with how slow the food was coming out and did not offer the prompt service that we were so use to at the Roswell location. It appears that the Casteluccis have decided to sacrifice service for volume. If we ever return, we will make sure that we call ahead to make sure that they are not so crowded and it will definitely not be on a holiday weekend. What a disappointing experience! read more

Didn't mind too much that they had a wedding reception party in the private room with lots of dancing music to the side. We just didn't feel like we were in an intimate date setting even if there was no party there. We had to talk very loud over our small table. Had the calamari-ok batter wasn't what we were use to and so we didn't like it, Cosmo- didn't really taste the alcohol but second one did, wine- tasted a little off, truffle ravioli was sooo delicious, the veal saltimbocca was ok, not necessarily memorable or fantastic, chocolate cake was alright-good. Sugos has redefined great Italian food!! What seems like a hole in the wall restaurant is an amazing find! With the dim lights and somewhat of a Midtown setting, Sugos will not upset! Very comfortable setting, everytime I've been there it's been full but yet doesn't give off the "crowded" feel. The owner comes around and chats and talks about the black and white family pictures on the wall. Very nice service, very attentive. It's been a while since I was last there but I had the veal special (dont remember the particular name) but all I can say is it was amazing! Highly recommend trying Sugo's if you have never been there. You can sit down, relax, have a glass of wine, a great meal and feel totally comfortable! Fantastic array of tastes and flavors at a VERY reasonable price. We've been to Sugo's twice now and have been amazed on both occasions. We do not go out to eat often frankly because we can cook better than most of the restaurants in the area. Not so for Sugo's. We started out with a lovely veal and pasta tapas cooked in black truffle oil. I ordered a steak tips and mascarpone cheese tapas for my entree (more than enough food) and my wife ordered a scrumptious shrimp and scallop dish that had fennel. The sea food was wrapped in smoked salmon and ever so succulent! The service is superb. Many suburban restaurants have untrained and grumpy "kids" as waitstaff. Sugo's hires very knowledgeable and professional waitstaff. That combined with the Castellucci family's attentiveness makes you feel very special. Had a reservation of 20 something for my company's Christmas dinner party. Everything was excellent from service, food, drinks, decor and even restrooms. Sugo was amazing! I recent went there for a private dinner party. The wait staff was super attentive and helpful. The owners were incredibly nice and attentive and the part planner was organized and got the job done well! And then there was the food! Holy cow, it was amazing. Everyone raved about it. Appetizers and main course were incredible. The only thing I wished for was more non-pork options- although that might have been the fault of the people throwing the party. I really loved the use of dates in the different dishes! Please make more foods with dates and chicken! read more
