I recently went to Sumomaya for my birthday while visiting Scottsdale from Boston, and I can confidently say it was one of the more disappointing dining experiences I've had. I needed to adjust our reservation from 8 to 9 people, but instead of making it simple, I was told I had to contact the private event coordinator, who informed me they couldn't accommodate the party size. I had to split our group into two tables of 4 and 5, which was already frustrating. When I arrived early to ask the host if we could at least sit near each other, I was told we had to sit outside--despite the fact that it was over 100 degrees. Even though we agreed to sit in the shaded area, there were multiple open tables inside, and it was obvious the restaurant was not full. Worse, they sat us with an empty table in between, separating us from our friends on my birthday. The table between us was literally left empty the entire brunch. The reasoning? They didn't want us moving between tables and "sharing."We were all paying the full price for the bottomless brunch, and yet they treated us like an inconvenience.The menu says you can only order two appetizers at a time, but the waiters put in the full menu without asking, so clearly, they weren't worried about waste/sharing. The food itself was mediocre at best, and the margarita was way too sweet. For a place that seems to pride itself on atmosphere and experience, the poor treatment and inability to accommodate a simple request ruined the experience. I would absolutely not recommend Sumomaya, especially for groups. The staff was inflexible, dismissive, and frankly, unprofessional. That being said, our waiter was a diamond in the rough. This place was OK. It's definitely a cool and pretty restaurant, and I understand the appeal for lots of bach parties and other group events. However, we went with a group of 6 for brunch and it never felt like there was enough food for everyone. They would only bring out two dishes at a time and their shareable portions were very small; it felt like everyone only got a bite of each for every round. Service was a little slow the day we went too so that didn't help. The menu options also sound really great and we were all excited to try the fusion, but for a group that likes a lot of more traditional Asian and/or Mexican food, this food didn't quite live up to expectations (which is more on us and our preferences). I've never been to a restaurant like that. First off, this place is super trendy. We went on like a Sunday evening and seriously most of the ladies were dressed up in clubbing clothes. Skimpy dresses, barely there tops, and made-up from the ground up. I felt kind of out of place. If you come here with your young children, you definitely will too. Loud music, dark lighting, and trendy atmosphere. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. He told us that everything was basically made to share and the kitchen is pretty quick so we can order as we go. On to the food (Best to Worst) Seabass - the sea bass is a must, but sea bass is my favorite so I'm biased. Rainbow ceviche - I appreciate the big chunks of seafood. Nice acidity to it. Tacos - We tried three: korean beef, mahi mahi, and short rib I believer. They were huge and overflowing with meat. Very good. Shaking beef - it's not the same flavors that I would associate with this traditionally Vietnamese dish, but it was good nonetheless. Tempura Shrimp roll - basically a tuna roll with tempura shrimp on top. Not that special, but tasted fine. Ginger fried rice - bland as ever. Might as well have gotten steamed rice. Pad Thai - everyone said get the pad Thai. I think they put too much liquid smoke or burnt it because it had an overwhelming charcoal aftertaste. So much so that it got too overpowering towards the end with that and the lime juice. I pass. The only complaint I have is that their POS system seems very outdated and they kept having issues swiping cards when it was time to pay. Absolutely loved my dinner here. We came for NYE dinner with my husband and my family and we all enjoyed our meal. I can't believe I have lived almost 5 years in PHX and had never stopped by. I love their Asian-Mexican fusion concept. The pairing of flavors was excellent. Our server was helpful and friendly. I virtually never m drink but I decided to try their spicy peach margarita and I loved it. If you don't like strong alcohol flavors this one is for you. We tried a bunch of things and I virtually liked everything. The one think I would skip is the cucumber/seaweed salad - it just wasn't anything special. I loved the bacon medjool dates, the caramelized plantains. My favorites were probably the lobster ceviche, ahí tuna tostada and the Thai fresco roll. I said yes, my boyfriend's birthday. Please dont make a huge deal out of it, maybe just send him a dessert for a surprise. She said they dont sing and they do send out complimentary dessert. Shed make a note so our server would know. Well when we sat down, our server asked us if we were celebrating anything. I specifically DID NOT want to mention it in front of my boyfriend which is why I said it on the phone! Needless to say I had to tell her. We ordered our food and she let us know that nothing is "coursed" dining there so as the food is ready, they bring it out. We found quickly that type of dining is not for us. We got our calamari and shisito peppers together, great. Then some sushi pieces for my bf, then my side of rice, then my seabass, then his sushi roll. All with significant time in-between. So my rice was cold before I even got my entree. After the meal, our server brought out dessert with a sparkler in it. Honestly, I actually laughed. I thought it was kind of funny, my bf...not so much! Haha Here's where the night took an absolute turn for the worse and made my mind up I won't be back. Halfway through dessert and each of us with 1/4 to half of our cocktails still in the glasses, the server comes over and let's us know shes going to be pushing a table onto our table!! This is the second time we have been to this restaurant. We know that this restaurant is super busy even on weekdays thus we decided to book at least a week a week in advance. When booking in advanced we were limited to high tops at 6:00pm or seats at a bar! High top tables are horrible unless you are there for just a drink! And spending 15-20 dollars for a drink you may prefer a more comfy environment. The only alternative at that time was the bar which provides better service and slightly more comfort! Note bar opens at 4, dining room at 5. When we determine the high tops we're too uncomfortable we asked about alternative tables. We were informed a table could be provided for a limited time. Again at high prices we did not want to be rushed! So how are the drinks in good! Everything is pricey! The drinks are unique! They are good! The fluffy drinks are a bit light on alcohol in My opinion. If you need to relish the taste of alcohol stick to the classics! For dinner we had a variety of appetizers. The guacamole for 19 dollars was good but not great! Could of used some more spice! A bit bland! Presentation was nice! The sushi, happy ending, was no so happy! The fish tasted off, not fresh! We came to SumoMaya for brunch and had no idea they offered a bottomless brunch menu. We were pleased to say the least! For $32 dollars a head, you are able to choose 1 entree with bottomless (yes bottomless) tapas. For our entrees we had the ramen and the Wagyu steak and eggs. For tapas, the options were endless (literally). All of the food was delicious. We even ordered a second round of the Rangoons because they were too good to pass up. Our server was amazing. She had us choose our entrees and then brought us tapas 2 at a time until we were stuffed. From 14 tapas and entrees to choose from, we were overwhelmed with the quality, quantity, and taste of all of the food! For another $15 per guest, you can choose to do bottomless drinks as well, and select from a variety of options (margs, mimosas, etc.)! We decided to go for spicy margs during our brunch stay. Service was friendly and quick, and we were pleased to have a live DJ during our stay as well. The inside of the restaurant is elegant and has a great aesthetic, especially lively. The concept of Mexican-Japanese fusion is very much up my street so we felt lucky when, for a last minute date night, my boyfriend and I were able to easily nab seats at the bar as a walk up. Besides the location in a not-very-glamorous strip mall, the overall ambiance felt quite upscale to me. The interior felt like it had been intentionally designed with interesting modern fixtures and the service, which was thoughtful, pleasant, and generous, added to the feeling that you are a guest and your experience matters. The food, sadly, was a bit of a let down for me. We started off strong with the rainbow ceviche which was everything you'd hope for. Super fresh and tender fish, a sesame-forward sauce, and some tostadas on the side for getting the deliciousness from bowl to mouth. Felt like a ceviche finished like an Asian-inspired tuna tartare. Very on brand. I'd also recommend the spicy peach margarita which was juicy and a bit spicy, but not too much. Very drinkable even for me who isn't generally much for booze or and generally orders mild. From there, though, things went downhill for me. Our server/bartender informed us that dishes come out as they're ready from the kitchen rather than specifically coursed out, so we ordered accordingly. I started with a bowl of miso soup and my boyfriend got the dan dan noodles. It was a perfectly fine bowl of miso soup and the cilantro was an interesting touch, but not worth $8. I'd skip this next time. I have mixed feelings about the dan dan noodles. The noodle texture was nice and they were sort of fun to eat, but there was something sort of bitter about it that I wasn't a fan of. Perhaps that's in the nature of Sichuan spice and I'm just not familiar, but it made it less enjoyable. Because I liked the texture of the noodles, I decided to go for the yakisoba as my main and, in a rare turn of events, I had to send it back. It tasted to me like an afterthought menu item. A bit bland, random assortment of veg that may or may not complement the dish. It just wasn't really edible for me and at a place like SumoMaya, I expect more. The staff was very kind about taking it back for me and allowing me to order something new. I then went for the seafood paella which, sadly, still didn't do it for me. I think calling it a paella is a bit of a misnomer; the preparation is more just an island of rice surrounded by a sort of Spanish bouillabaisse. The rice had good flavor and I'd happily eat that on the side of something else but overall it wasn't what I was expecting or hoping for.
