We spend part of the year out here, and somehow Slanted Rice Vietnamese Bistro has quietly become one of our regular spots. It's close to the house, easy for a laid-back lunch, and one of those places you end up recommending without even thinking about it. I've worked my way through most of the menu at this point, and I honestly can't remember a single miss. The food is consistently fresh, full of flavor, and cooked the way it should be. No shortcuts, no off days. I usually land on the crispy rice clay pot, which has that perfect mix of texture and depth. My wife goes straight for the lemongrass rice plate every time and doesn't even consider switching it up. That alone tells you something. We almost always start with a couple orders of spring rolls. Mix it up depending on the mood. They're light, fresh, and a good way to ease into the meal without overthinking it. The place itself is on the smaller side, but that's part of the charm. It feels relaxed, not cramped. Clean every time we've been in, which is something I notice more than I probably should. Service hits that sweet spot too. Attentive, friendly, but they're not hovering over your shoulder while you're trying to eat. Prices are more than fair for what you're getting, especially considering how consistent everything is. If you're anywhere near Scottsdale and want Vietnamese that just gets it right without making a big show of it, this is an easy choice. This is my 121st Diners Drive Ins and Dives stop! There was a lot on the menu I wanted to order, but we were about to get on a plane and I didn't want to stuff myself. We got the following: Complementary soup and salad with our dish. I don't eat salad, but that soup was good. Crispy Pork Egg Rolls (2) - Chai Gio (H)- Minced Pork, Mushrooms, Carrots, Onions, and Clear Noodles And the reason for the trip: Crispy Rice in a Clay Pot - Com Tay Cam Crispy Rice Charred / Burnt in a Clay Pot topped with Stir-Fry Shiitake Mushroom and Bok Choy Hear that sizzle. Arrived at 11:30am on a Friday. A few patrons were already seated, but the place would start to fill up as we dined. The ambiance is clean and modern. The service is fast and friendly. The menu covers a lot of Vietnamese standards and some dishes I had not tried before. I opted for Dynamite Chicken. The chicken is lightly fried and comes in a brown sauce with onions. Quite good. We stopped in for an early dinner because it was featured on Diners Dives and DriveIns and we happened to be in the area. Just walking into the place, the aromas were delightful. This was such a fine treat. My family brought me here for Father's Day to experience slanted rice Vietnamese bistro. The food was amazing, authentic with deep RICH flavors. Our server came from behind the bar and was handling the whole restaurant which by the way is cozy and intimate. He handled it like a pro! Swung by on a Tuesday night. It wasn't too busy as there were only a few other patrons so we were seated immediately. Nice and cozy with modern decor. Menu had plenty of options, but we ended up ordering the spring rolls, lemongrass brussel sprouts, pho dac biet, and crispy rice scallop clay pot. Food came out pretty quickly and was paced out well. Brussels sprouts were surprisingly rich in flavor and was devoured quickly! Pho was okay, but was enough to take care of my buddy's craving. The scallop clay pot was amazing though! Plenty of crispy rice and everything had so much flavor! Would definitely order again. Ordered the bun cha for takeout and I will have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it at home. Nice and cozy here. The ambiance felt very homey which was cool. I sat at the bar and the bartender was very friendly. She helped answer questions I had about the menus items. I was there with my sister and our new friend Elicia who suggested we meet here after work. I had never heard of it or seen before. It's hidden in the strip mall off of Scottsdale Rd and McDonald Dr. right behind the Chase bank which is visible from the street. I ordered the shrilmp eggrolls, salt and pepper shrimp, and Grand Canyon Rum cocktail from the happy hour menu. Everything was delicious. I didn't think I was going to enjoy the shrimp eggrolls but to my surprise they were really good. I was so hungry I forgot to take pictures of my food lol. Advised I can sit any open table, since it was just me sat up at the bar. Decided to try the crispy pork egg rolls and slanted pho. The egg rolls were fresh out and so tasty. We had a wonderful experience here. My family has been coming here on and off for a couple of years. This week the owner came in while we were dining. Actually impressed by this Vietnamese place in AZ. Food was really good. Shishito peppers didn't have much flavor to me but fun to eat. The sweet pork crispy wonton spring roll was really good! Add a little sriracha to their sauce and it was perfect. Fried pork eggrolls were super flavorful and fried perfectly, super crispy. Garlic noodles were good, you can smell and taste the garlic and butter in it. A smidge salty but still good. Fish sauce glazed wings were awesome. The fish sauce becomes slightly sweet as it caramelizes. Fried just right super crispy skin. Pork vermicelli bowl had pork that was tender and seasoned so well. Service was great! This time we were disappointed - food was salty, soup no longer comes out piping hot. The salted pepper calamari was more salted pepper onions and jalapeño peppers than the calamari. There were like 5 strips of calamari for $14 and the whole thing was filled with onions and jalapeño peppers. The breading was not great and whole thing was meh. My dynamite shrimp is not what i remembered. the shaken beef as meh. We probably wouldn't come back or at least wouldn't seek it out like before the next time we're in town. read more

My wife had the egg rolls vermicelli cold salad and she enjoyed it quite a bit. My grandson got the firecracker shrimp with garlic noodles. The shrimp were good but the noodles were a bit dry. I also ordered a side order of the garlic noodles and also found them to be dry. I ordered sweet green tea and it was very good. Overall cost was 106.00 which was not bad considering what we had. Although this place might look like nothing from the outside, as it is based in a strip mall, this is nothing to sleep on. If you live in the area, if you are visiting the area, if you like Asian food in any way shape or form you must go and visit this restaurant. They were on Guy Fieri's TV show diners, drive-ins, and dives. Worthy of the recognition! They have an amazing happy hour until 6:30 PM and a full bar. I had a glass of the house red and then got the salt and pepper calamari and one of the spring rolls. To me it was a summer roll; in my mind a spring roll is fried and a summer roll is fresh and this was fresh. It was the size of a mini burrito. I got the shrimp with peanut sauce. They are not shy with the sauce on the side and the amount they give you is more than enough. They also provided me a squeeze bottle of hoisin sauce and Sriracha. The hoisin sauce was sweet and tangy. Sriracha everybody knows that and it's spicy but when you mix it with their hoisin sauce, it's a whole Nother level of YUM. The salt and pepper calamari had sliced jalapeños and onions that were ever so slightly dusted and then flash fried and it came with a spicy mayo/Yum sauce and it was calamari fingers. Everything was amazing. I sat at the bar. The staff and the patrons were so friendly. Another couple was having pho and clay pot and he said the clay pot with the rice that gets all sorts of crunchy at the bottom is over the top amazing and if you like the crunchy rice, it is a definite must. I previously left a review regarding the poor service I received at slanted Rice and was disappointed that no one from management never responded. What makes it even more frustrating is that this restaurant used to provide excellent service. Which is why this recent experience was so surprising. Customer feedback should be taken seriously and responding to concerns shows customers that their experience matters. Unfortunately the lack of response only added to my disappointment. I truly hope management take this as an opportunity to improve both customer service and communication. I would have appreciated someone reaching out addressing the issue and inviting me back to experience the level of service that made me enjoy coming here in the first place. read more

When I received my pho and got home I noticed it only came with steak, noodles, and green onion. There were no other toppings provided even though it is advertised that it comes with more. Funny enough - my husband and I were watching Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives one morning in our hotel while visiting Phoenix and it was the episode this restaurant was featured. Lol My husband looked this place up and saw that it wasn't too far away so we decided to head over for lunch that same day. We both ordered the lunch special which comes with soup and salad. I walked in at 2pm on a Friday and there were 3 other tables and a few people at the bar. I was immediately greeted by Mason who was taking care of everyone. Including the bar patrons. For a one man show he is super on top of it. Even upon taking my order offered recommendations and things to add to my orders to help compliment the lunch dishes. I started with the Dragon Lady spring rolls. Got a slight kick to it with the jalapeño but he recommended the chili oil to it and it was devine. Kicked up the spice level. Then I ordered the lunch special Filet Mignon Shaken Beef which comes with a soup and salad. The house made dressing is delicious. Ginger based but lighter and more bright than what you get elsewhere. The soup is their base broth of the Pho they make in-house. I thought it was incredibly flavorful against some of the other reviews. The beef plate comes sizzling hot alongside a heaping scoop of white rice, lime, and salt and pepper. Mason suggested squeezing the lime into the salt and pepper and dipping the beef. Good call. But also delicious, the beef in the chili oil! The only thing I can remotely complain about would be every dish/plate was broken on corners. All in all, this server needs to get into sales. He's on top of it and super personable.
