A neighborhood gem that never misses and I mean never. I've been coming to Sunset Bakery on Judah for a while now and it has yet to let me down. This time I stopped by to grab some BBQ pork buns and pineapple buns to send a friend off on a plane ride right -- because honestly, what's a better travel snack than fresh bakery buns? Both were as good as always, soft, fresh, and exactly what you'd expect from a spot that consistently delivers. But the real highlight of this visit was my first time trying the sponge cupcake and oh my gosh. I was not prepared. It sounds simple on paper, and it is, but that's exactly what makes it so special. Lightly flavored, lightly sweet, and just perfectly executed. Hold up, are people gatekeeping the egg tarts here?? The pastry-flakiness and custard-silkiness remind me a lot of the egg tarts at Golden Gate Bakery lol. Main differences are that the egg tarts here are smaller and *I think* there's a tad amount of cinnamon/warm spice added to the crust (I like it). Come here if you don't want to deal with long lines and/or unannounced day-of closures at GGB. :p BBQ pork bun filling here is a little too soy sauce heavy for me, but the BBQ pork bun is still good in a pinch. Pillow-soft steamed sponge cake (the one wrapped in parchment paper)! Red bean paste in the red bean bun is on the cusp on being overly sweet, but I love the crispy bun topping. This little bakery has been a staple institution in Sunset and also my life. As a raggedy teen with purse strings budget, this place has kept me fed and has seen all my growths. This little bakery stuck through all the times while other mom and pop shops collapse and fell. It's cash only so come prepared and dig out the forgotten money. I ordered a strawberry cake at Sunset Bakery over the phone for pick up a couple days later. The process was smooth for ordering as I already saw the menu online and the worker wrote down and repeated the message on the cake. The day I came to pick up, the bakery was fairly empty so I didn't have any wait. The worker or owner was so nice and showed me the cake, let me take a pic, boxed it up, and took payment. The process was quick and simple. The cake itself was light, fluffy, and delicious. The only thing negative was that the strawberries were not sweet, but then again, I ordered in late January, early February. Maybe the strawberries might be better during peak strawberry season? I was so disappointed in the 10 inch Strawberry cake and custard pie that I purchased. The cake was 50% cake 50% cream. The sponge cake was fine and the cream was definitely not whipped cream. For $53, it felt like a ripoff. The custard in the pie was no more than 1/2 inch deep costing $16. It would have been better to get custard tarts instead. I've purchased cakes from here in the past and was satisfied. Don't know what's happening with this bakery. Staff is still friendly. read more

I'm a big fan of Sunset Bakery! I've stopped by here too many times to count (thanks to Yelp check-ins for counting for me) and tried a variety of their bakery items. My **favorite** three items from Sunset Bakery are: 1) Egg tarts (TWO THUMBS-UP!): these have a delightfully flaky crust (I highly recommend lightly toasting them before consuming) and a egg custard filling that has a just-right sweetness. No need to trek all the way over to Chinatown; Sunset Bakery can satisfy all my egg tart cravings in Inner Sunset. 2) Strawberry cream cake (ALSO TWO THUMBS-UP!): this is my new favorite choice for family birthday cakes. The cake is airy and soft, with a lightly-sweet cream filling with strawberries (the sweetness has been approved by the parents AND grandma, so you know it's just right!) They sometimes sell these by the slice so you can try it before committing to a full one. For full cakes, I recommend pre-ordering at least 2 days in advance. You can pay up-front or pay at pick-up if you call in to order. 3) Pineapple bun: the classic pineapple bun, with a crumbly Hong Kong-style topping. As with most of the pastries here, I recommend toasting before consuming, but it's also good as is if you can't wait to scarf it down. You don't quite expect an old-school Chinese bakery in the Inner Sunset, but son of a gun, here it is unapologetically and hell, why not? Yum come here for their dan tats, when they are fresh out of the oven they are so flakey so custardy. This has to be one of my favorite egg tart places as you can actually see all the layers of pastry. We also love ordering their fruit cakes, they are typical Asian sponge cake with whipped cream and fruit toppings. The base cake is airy and not too dense and the whipped cream isn't too overly sweet. Would recommend the strawberry or chestnut cake. I ordered 30 cupcakes today for my kids school, when I got home there was no frosting or sprinkles, just the bun. I called the store and they said you can bring them back and we will frost them for an additional 90 cents per cupcake. I already spent $50 . I ended up frosting them myself. CASH Only Business New Year's Eve and I was in a hunt for a bakery that was still open late in San Francisco. FOUND Sunset Bakery that was still open for another 30 mins (closes at 6:30p every day except Sundays)... oh, but, wait! It was a cash only basis. I started to walk away, who carries cash anymore... oh, but wait! I had a few bills in my purse! Hmm, with the rise of mobile payments and the popularity of credit cards, cash-only businesses risk losing customers (like me) if they don't start adapting to electronic payments. BUT I understand why they wouldn't accept CC's for some of these mom & pop shops. My main desire were the pineapple buns and she still had some in the glass case. I got half a dozen of those. I also requested pork buns but she only had 2 left so I purchased what she had remaining. I pointed to the custard pie and said I wanted a slice of it. New to me were the onion bun and cocktail bun. I got some of those too. I'm usually a creature of habit but I was willing to try them. She boxed everything neatly in the pink box and proceeded to tie the box with a ribbon.
