    Strawberry Cake
    Jean S.

I ordered a strawberry cake at Sunset Bakery over the phone for pick up a couple days later. The process was smooth for ordering as I already saw the menu online and the worker wrote down and repeated the message on the cake. The day I came to pick up, the bakery was fairly empty so I didn't have any wait. The worker or owner was so nice and showed me the cake, let me take a pic, boxed it up, and took payment. The process was quick and simple. The cake itself was light, fluffy, and delicious. The only thing negative was that the strawberries were not sweet, but then again, I ordered in late January, early February. Maybe the strawberries might be better during peak strawberry season? The cream was light and tasted well with the cake. Sunset Bakery also sells Chinese pastries and coffee. Nice hole-in-the-wall Chinese bakery that has been around for decades.

Delicious asian cake. Not overly sweet like American cakes. Ordered the mixed fruit 24 hours before and pick up was super easy. Would buy from here again!

Stopped by for my morning breakfast. Ate halfway through and noticed a cockroach in my bun . Other half tasted good though.

This is one of go to places when I'm craving bbq pork buns. Today I dropped in around 9:15am to buy 1/2 dozen. The buns were still warm when I got home. Later I had one for lunch. I bit into the bun. Where's the meat? I had to take several bites to get to the pork. Somewhat on the less generous side. It's not going to prevent me from patronizing the bakery as I'm hoping this was a fluke today. I found metered parking around the corner.

$31 dollars for an 8in Asian fruit cake. Cash only. Classic pink box tied with plastic red string. No frills. The egg sponge is SO soft. The airy cream isn't very sweet! Worker tossed in a free pineapple bread so my kid can eat it on the way home. What a great neighborhood business. Would definitely be back! Plus they are open till 630pm! Walking in this place looks nostalgia of the Asian bakeries in the 80s. Love it.

I think I got the wrong thing... bbq pork bun had a nice filling but the bread was kinda bland and not as soft as I would have liked. they only take cash

Green onion bun, $1.80. It's on the softer side and has good flavor. Cashier was friendly

Solid Chinese bakery featuring cakes (light whipping cream), baos , tarts, coffee, cookies, bengs, quoks, pies, etc.... Quick, polite service. Their Baked Pork Buns are adequate however I loved their past version which had less sauce, more meat, diced onions, and puffier bread.

I'm a big fan of Sunset Bakery! I've stopped by here too many times to count (thanks to Yelp check-ins for counting for me) and tried a variety of their bakery items. My **favorite** three items from Sunset Bakery are: 1) Egg tarts (TWO THUMBS-UP!): these have a delightfully flaky crust (I highly recommend lightly toasting them before consuming) and a egg custard filling that has a just-right sweetness. No need to trek all the way over to Chinatown; Sunset Bakery can satisfy all my egg tart cravings in Inner Sunset. 2) Strawberry cream cake (ALSO TWO THUMBS-UP!): this is my new favorite choice for family birthday cakes. The cake is airy and soft, with a lightly-sweet cream filling with strawberries (the sweetness has been approved by the parents AND grandma, so you know it's just right!) They sometimes sell these by the slice so you can try it before committing to a full one. For full cakes, I recommend pre-ordering at least 2 days in advance. You can pay up-front or pay at pick-up if you call in to order. 3) Pineapple bun: the classic pineapple bun, with a crumbly Hong Kong-style topping. As with most of the pastries here, I recommend toasting before consuming, but it's also good as is if you can't wait to scarf it down. More THUMBS-UPS: + Green onion ham bread + Corn mayo bread + Baked BBQ pork bun + Walnut cookie + Sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf (these are filling!) + Curry beef pastry roll + Cream bun with coconut + Chestnut cream cake (these have chestnut cream and real chestnut pieces in the inside layer, with regular cream and fruit on the outside) I'd PASS on: - Baked chicken bun (I didn't like the filling) - Red bean bun (I liked the pineapple crust, but the red bean inside was too much for me. If you're a fan of super sweet red bean paste, you may enjoy this) - Custard tart (it was okay) TIPS: + Bring cash! + No seating inside. Grab and go + They don't have as wide a variety of buns as, say, Sheng Kee Bakery, but they do have a bunch of cookies and cupcakes and other stuff too that I haven't tried yet. When I see all the neighborhood grandmas and grandpas coming by in the daytime to get their drinks and buns and chatting it up with the older lady who's usually behind the counter, I know it's a legit neighborhood mom & pop bakery that I want to keep supporting for as long as possible.

I arrived shortly after 10:00 AM and was 4th in line with people continuing to get in line behind me. A staff member would signal for the next customer to come in when she was done with the previous customer. I asked for 2 plain croissants and a chocolate almond croissant. The croissants were placed in individual bags and then a medium sized bag with a handle. The bag had an Arsicault Bakery sticker. The croissants smelled wonderful on my 40 minutes walk back. The croissants were soft and flaky on the outside and the preserve found its way into the layered pockets of the croissant. The croissants were well worth the walk.

I've gone a few times around 10-11 AM and gotten through the line pretty quickly, plus they've never been sold out of anything. Another plus of this location is its proximity to Golden Gate Park; when the weather is nice it's great to pick up pastries from here, find a grassy area in the park to put down a blanket, and have a mini picnic. My favorite thing to get here is the chocolate almond croissant, especially since it's fairly unique and not too many other bakeries do it. Everything is perfect from the almond filling, the flaky croissant, the crunchy baked almond filling on top, and the melted chocolate. It's pretty heavy and dense though, even when hungry I can only get through half of it. It's still good later on (even after a day or two) but nothing beats it fresh. I also like to get the plain croissant and their kouign amann. The kouign amann has the same buttery, flaky layers as the croissant and has this caramelized sugar coating that I love. Don't love their chocolate chip cookie - too much chocolate and not enough cookie. But everything else I've tried from their is so worth the drive over, line, and prices.

The preorder box came with randomized drops of what's in season that week, our small box came with Herby Olive Twist, Coffee Caramel Pain Au Chocolat, Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin, Lamb Pain Suisse. The pastries: they really got their lamination down. The pastry shell is amazingly crispy and really good layers regardless of the type of toppings or fillings it has. The flavor combinations were fun and familiar. It's like getting some of your favorite foods being converted into a croissant. Of the ones we tried I really enjoyed the salty ones like the olive twist and lamb, I was impressed how well the pastry kept crispy even with the sauces. The sweet ones like the caramel were too sweet for me to even finish, but that can be personal preference. After trying all these fun flavors I still think the highlight is def the pastry, will need to try the original croissant next time! Ambiance: the vibe of the bakery was great, lots of hard working ladies and feels like they are passionate about what they do. Bright and airy with lots of pink accents. Definitely go early to get everything fresh, but you probably won't run into a line if you don't. Highlight of the menu was absolutely the kouign amann - it was so buttery and flaky with this caramelized sticky sweet inside, rivaled in my eyes only by the Arsicault one. We also got the seasonal one (raspberry and guava) which was also really good. The passion fruit bostock was also interesting with this spongy cakey texture with an almond topping. The banana chocolate almond croissant was another favorite of mine, it's also such a unique item and definitely a must order. We sat inside at a table so we could eat some of the pastries right away which I highly recommend - everything lost freshness after a few hours and I probably wouldn't get anything from here again with the intention of eating it later. They have a ton of cakes too, tried the chocolate mousse cake, the berry cake, and the passionfruit orange and guava cake. The chocolate mousse was my favorite and runs on the sweeter side compared to other chocolate mousse's I've had. The other two are also amazing and have a bunch of different layers. I also tried the prosciutto burrata and cherry tomato tartine - an open faced sandwich basically - which tasted good but was kind of difficult to eat, either with hands or fork and knife. Would definitely come here again both because what I tried was so good and there are so many other things there I'd want to try.
