This place is fantastic! My husband and I had dinner here at sunset and sat at a table near the edge. The views are stunning! We ordered appetizers, I had crab chowder which was simply amazing and my husband had the wedge salad. For dinner he had the chicken and said it was the best he ever had. I had the salmon and the portion size was huge and cooked to perfection. We had a simply amazing dinner, and will definitely be going back. I must add our server, Jared, was outstanding. The view is filling but the meal not so much. First, to charge $30 for meatloaf you really need to rock the world. Even if it was local bison. Was about 8oz slice and dry as a bone. I buy my bison from Wyoming where it is pasture raised and slaughtered. I've made meatloaf with it and if you don't know what you are doing, will be very dry as the meat is very lean. But the flavor of that bison is amazing, much deeper than this local version. The puck of meat was served on top of grits. Maybe a half cup. And they lacked care and nuance that grits need to elevate them. They were given too much water and probably not stirred enough to develop the corn character. Basically had no flavor. The final accompaniment tonight were some pickled peppers tossed onto field greens. I honestly don't know why. The dish needed acid but the lack of innovation there was sad. At most this was a $15 plate. My partner had a panini sandwich. It was an $8 sandwich they charged 16 for. The charcuterie board was decent but again very skimpy on the meat and heavy on the bread. And the cheese board had a good blue, a decent sheep's milk and an utterly horrible cheddar. Again portions of the cheese were skimpy for the price. read more

We've been having lunch here every year for the past five years as part of our annual May trip to Asheville. Consistently good, until this year. Same menu items but quite mediocre quality now. Not sure what has happened; could be there is just too much competition for chefs and cooks in Asheville. Could be the corporate influence of Omni. Whatever it is, the quality of the food has substantially declined. A great disappointment. Our group had several of the appetizers, entree salads and sandwiches at lunch. We were willing to pay for overpriced menu in the past as the quality was good and the mountain view is exceptional. No longer; sad to say. Well, let's just say disappointment is putting it mildly. For the price, you would have expected so much better. The waiter said "we are known for our steaks" so we had steaks. All 3, different cuts, were all way over cooked. When you ask for rare and it comes out well done, things are wrong in the kitchen. The bad part is the waiter never came to check on the meal, so we never got to complain. In addition, a glass of wine at $22 bucks???? Sitting at our table we were able to capture the different colors of the sunset reflecting off the far away mountains. Dusting them with a gentle glow, highlighting the various fall colors. I thought it was fairly priced. Portions were good too. Even thou my steak was cooked deliciously, i did find that the "crust" which i love on a steak, was a bit too salty for our liking. I had it with a side of scallops - these were a nice size as well - a serving of 3 pieces - cooked to a nice texture. We requested a side of Corn pudding - this was ok but it did contain a spice of which i am not sure what it was, but it was pretty strong and overpowered the dish. It was too strong for our friends who requested to be changed to some scalloped potatoes (which they did not care for either too much) 3)4 STARS: Upon knowing that it was our first time there, she really took her time to explain the menu and dishes to us. We did have several questions and she was well informed. She also did point to us that the "tip" was already included in our bill. When our friends expressed that they did not care for the corn pudding, she immediately removed it from their tab and asked if they wanted to exchange it for something else (which they did and it was quickly brought out) She was not pushy at all when we asked for the dessert menu but then opted not to get it. She was very nice all around. Conclusion: Would we go back - Yes for the view - food too but would try something different. I don't need to tell you the view and atmosphere were great - but then you have to decide for yourself whether the price you pay for your meal is commensurate with the view and atmosphere. I would vote no after my experience. There are a lot of great views in Asheville, so if I am going to pay nearly $50 for a ribeye, it better be darn good. Let's just say I got a better steak at the Road House Grill the last time I was there. My side order was delivered incorrect. I asked for a baked potato, but got a twice baked potato. They delivered a replacement that was barely warm and not fully cooked. One of my dining partners ending up sending his steak special back to be reheated - thankfully for him, they sent a new potato with it that was properly cooked. I could have sent mine back, I know, but it always ruins the mood for me. This was supposed to be a great dinner at a nice place visiting with good friends - but it was anything but. For our anniversary dinner (5 years of being married - YAY!) my husband and I chose to eat at the Sunset Terrace. Wow, am I glad we did. Let's begin with view - it is beautiful! The terrace overlooks the grounds and resort golf course and ultimately the Asheville skyline and Appalachian Mountains! Every table has a good view, though we requested a table next to the railing so our view was unobstructed. So moving past the view, the service and food was fantastic as well! Our waitress was knowledgeable, charming, and attentive. Now, the food...OH M G! I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass and my husband ordered the Center-Cut Filet Mignon...as you may have guessed, they were both amazing! (Amazing is a common theme at the Grove Park Inn.) The only somewhat "negative" comment I would have is that there are a lot of tables on the Terrace so be prepared to eat within an arm's reach of another table. I had lunch here on a Friday afternoon outside- WOW what a view!!! Didn't stay at the inn but just stopped in for lunch. Views of the resort, mountains in the distance, all while being on a breezy brick patio was awesome. I ordered a turkey/brie sandwich which was great (how can it not be with brie cheese) and the bread they bring the table when you sit down is light and fluffy. I understand that with this type of dining, you are also paying for the experience. However, be prepared to empty your wallet, because the entrees are very pricey! Also, be SURE to make a reservation and specifically request the seating you want. I will say, however, that the view is priceless - and I did have the best salmon of my life here. The entrees and sides are very small, but the fish is flown in overnight from Hawaii (according to our server, who was very enthusiastic.) The macaroni and cheese is a must. Was hesitant to dine here due to some not so great reviews but thankfully my experience was great! The view is unbeatable. The hotel itself...gorgeous!!! We were informed that a new chef had just started recently so maybe that made the difference in our food experience compared to other reviewers. I had the 9oz filet and my boyfriend ordered the Porterhouse which both were cooked to perfection and delicious. My filet cut like butter. We also ordered the white cheddar topped mac and cheese and asparagus which were also wonderful. Service was great and attentive and I could not have asked for anything better for a surprise anniversary dinner for my boyfriend..I also loved the lobby with its two huge fire places and relaxed atmosphere. I have loved coming to the grove park inn for years, if I am in Asheville I always stop by. So my father and I where in town for the night and decided to stay at one of our favorite places, we were hungry and it was such a nice night that we agreed on eating at the sunset terrace restaurant because we have never ate there. Short story it is a great place to socialize and see the scenery but bad bad bad food. When a server finally arrived, he seemed very rushed. Looking around, I didn't see a reason for this as there were lots of wait staff roaming around. My tea was not topped off until I asked after it sat empty for a long time. Next, the food was not good. When you see prices like they charge, you expect much better. My wife and I both ordered the filet and requested it cooked medium. They both came out very over cooked and dry as sawdust. Since we were with a group of people, we didn't say anything. We just toughed it out, with the key word there being TOUGH !! The only redeeming part of the entire dinner was the view. The sun setting over the mountains was beautiful. Come here ONLY for a drink and the great view! The waiters aren't the most friendly and were not around half the time. Two top it off my husband's vegie burger had a piece of cardboard in it! The cook told us it was a piece of packaging from the patties. For a hotel of this standing I would have thought that they would make their own burgers. The restaurant has a great view. The Server was very friendly. My meal was terrible. I had the worst ribeye that I can remember from a restaurant in 20+ years. The twice baked potato was tasty but the creamed spinach was not palatable. Thankfully They had great cloth napkins so I could surreptitiously spit the bite out without the other table guests knowing. To be fair, my wife had scollops that she said were "solid". Ashville has many wonderful steak houses and eatery's, I would choose anyone of them before returning to Grove Park Inn's SkyView Terrace. read more

First off, the Grove Park Inn is an absolutely fantastic looking hotel. Very clean, very polished, and immense. The Sunset Terrace balcony was simply breath-taking and the views were amazing. From a pure scenery aspect and experience, this surely delivered. This view rivals many of the overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway! However, for this to be such an elite location, I did not get that feel from the food nor the service. The service was not bad, but was not stellar. The menu was very limited as was the wine by the glass selection. The food prices were steep, even given the location. The steaks nor the sides really delivered either. I have had much better steaks at Red Stag Grill or Rezaz or several other restaurants in Asheville. Mediocre food for the cost, not to mention the automatic service charge of 18% (15% to the server and 3% to the house). If you want a breath-taking and amazing view, I highly recommend it. Don't set your expectations too high on the food quality or the service, but just go enjoy a good meal in a relaxing setting. read more

We are staying at the Grove Park Inn for a wedding. The hotel is beautiful and VERY big. Had lunch at the Sunset Terrace and the view from my table was stunning. Waitress was very nice and friendly, though at the end of my meal it took 20 minutes to get my check. Maybe she was allowing me additional time to enjoy the views... Ordered the Maryland Crabcake sandwich and it was outstanding. $19, which is pricy, but thankfully the sandwich was good, so I was ok with paying it. Wouldn't eat here everyday, but for a special occasion I would. The lunch prices are more on the line of dinner prices for other restaurants. read more

VERY disappointing . Usually a bad wine can be fixed by a good meal or a good meal can be fix a bad glass of wine but neither can be said with this restaurant . Had trout which was very bland and only helped by adding steak sauces on top of it and ordered a vegan dish which was NOT palatable . Not only was the food bad but the management knew it . The manager walked over to ask how things were . With a sad look of distain, we said things were just,"okay ." It was clear she knew there was a problem and walked away as if she cleared her conscious by asking . Well while the service is very good the food (we had the trout and the chicken) was sooooo bland we had to season it three times with salt and pepper to make it palatable. Seriously, I had the trout and had I gotten this dish at say Denny's or Ruby Tuesday's, I probably would not have complained, but the Grove Park??? I expected so much more! Granted, I live in Charleston which is a foodie destination and I may be spoiled, but this meal I had at the Sunset Terrace was extremely subpar. The mashed (? Ate here for lunch today and I must say I enjoyed the biscuits with butter and honey and the shrimp cocktail appetizer we got. In my opinion I think they need a couple more pieces of shrimp because $18 for four pieces of shrimp just seems a bit steep. The shrimp cocktail was very good, I just wish they would have put a few more pieces on the plate. For the main course I got the North Carolina Trout with rice and carrots and it was very good. The incomparable view is what makes this restaurant at the historic Grove Park Inn worth coming back to. I was here on business, so the effect of the sunset and the romantic setting was pretty much lost. But I'll definitely be planning a getaway here with my wife sometime in the near future! The food was decent, but not particularly memorable. I had the NY Strip, which was slightly overcooked, and a side order of Mac & Cheese, which was better than I expected. There are almost certainly better places in Asheville, but if you're staying at the Grove Park, the scenery alone makes this historic restaurant worth a visit. read more

Yesterday, six friends had lunch at the Sunset Terrace at the Grove Park Inn. We were generally disappointed with the food as it was not up to the standards of the former Sunset Terrace before being acquired by the Omni hotels. The kitchen workers may have been having a bad day, but I will be with 11 other friends and family on 1 July so we'll see if there is an improvement. Three shrimp for $18 is not a good value either as an appetizer. I've had better and more for less money at such places as the Ritz Carlton and Waldorf-Astoria. read more

We came to celebrate our wedding anniversary (mentioned while making reservations, also requested a table with a good view) we arrived early for drinks and too in the scenery (gorgeous) spent $40+ for a glass of wine and a margarita... ok it's pretty. Our res was for 8pm. Checked in at 745, rudely told to "come back in 20 minutes" Time passes, we check in. Get seated behind a giant stone pillar so you can't see anything. Ok, it happens, moving on. We are greeted by a friendly server. Awesome he's a nice guy! I order an $85 bottle of wine and hubby gets a beer. 15 minutes pass... server comes by with a bottle of wine (unopened, no cooler, no glass) sets it down. Says he'll be back. Comes back 10 minute later to take order, with a wine cooler but no glass. Takes order. I ask for glass in told "oh that's what I'm working on next" Glass shows up, he leaves to another table. Wine is still not open. He finally returns to open and pour me a glass (I poured the rest on my own) we asked for more biscuits (twice. Never showed up) we receive the shellfish tower we ordered ($85) another server drops it off and I ask for lemons and horseradish (bc duh, oysters. ) he points to our sever and say "he can get it. I'm really busy you know" No. I don't know. I just know I'm $200 into this meal and I want to run away. Our server returns. Doesn't pour me any more wine. My husband orders a beer (doesn't show up until almost 40 minutes later, asking about t twice, getting excuses) Our tomahawk for two arrives for "show" and then returns 15 minutes later after being sliced ICE COLD. With ice cold onion rings and ice cold twice baked potato. Server asks how everything is... mention it took a while and is cold. No response but blaming the bar/resting meat/etc. Again. Nice guy. Great small talk. Spent over 15 minutes standing at the POS system while we sit with empty glasses. No acknowledgment of our anniversary. Cold food. Steak was fatty. Onion rings cold as ice and tasteless. Twice baked potato was bland and cold. $450 later we will never ever ever return. Save your money and time. We love a good meal and this left us wanting to get up and leave. **update. Maybe I'm crazy, or just got the best steak they had, but this place was amazing. I'm from Chicago and have tried plenty of high end steak places. I had the New York strip which was perfectly cooked with tons of flavor. Did it with Oscar on the side, tons of crab. Crab chowder was amazing. No joke my 1 year old went to town on it, and if you have kids you know how picky they can be. Wife had scallops which were excellent. View is A++, food A+, price is steep but at least you get what you paid for which is all I could ask for. Wait staff A+ as well, and we were the crazy people with a 1 and 3 year old with us. I grew up here so dining at GPI is a beloved treat for anniversary dinners, special out-of-towner dinners, birthdays, bridesmaid affairs. It's always been a bit expensive but so historic, ambient and scenic. BUT boy oh boy, I'm still mad over the heightened expenses wrought by "new" owners, Omni. One year ago I had wanted to honor important educators of my son before they moved away. I was host to these 2 lovely folk, their 2 young children, my companion and our two now-college sons. No liquor except 1 beer. Waiter proposed a tower of seafood appetizer. I can't find menu online but I recall it was $89? Something beyond imagining! And the amount was beyond scimpy. The young boys loved the crab legs. There wasn't much else to share: 3 oysters? and a wee lobster tail split in half!! THEN dinner: small servings. The one boy's steak was mischarged to larger size which never got corrected. I called later, leaving messages but never got a return call. I believe it was around $56! Why did the waiter 1) steer us to the tower of seafood? And overcharge for the steak? Sorry: but I think he saw opportunity. The bill was over $600.00. I am serious. We all left hungry. Horrible.
