Our first visit to Superiority Burger was about a year ago, and I believe I gave it 4 or even 5 stars at that time. This time, not as wonderful, though the place was hopping. The good, no, the outstanding, was the collard sandwich. The not good was the other dish we ordered. The not good was the glass of red(redfish) wine. That collard sandwich has been written up in the newspaper and it is really excellent. The polenta we had was a special the night we went. Our server described it as pumpkin polenta with some spinach on top. What we got was a very small bowl, held a cup, cup and a half at most, of a thin polenta with, indeed, fresh spinach leaves on top and a sprinkling of peanuts. Hardly satisfying. When we got the check, I should've asked our server if it was correct, because she'd said pumpkin polenta and we were billed for Pencil Cob grits. So, polenta is just cornmeal and so are grits, so possibly they describe it as polenta because some people have an aversion to grits??? Or did we get grits instead of polenta? Either way, it was bland and $20. for that very small dish. We ate it because we'd ordered it and we were hungry - we shared both. We left hungry. read more

I've been wanting to try this spot for forever so I'm glad my friend and I were able to casually get a table at around 9:00PM on a Thursday. We both ordered the soda special (guava orange mango) and it was very refreshing. My friend is a vegetarian so he really appreciated that this place is all vegetarian/vegan. We both tried the superiority burger and enjoyed it. However it is a MESS. The patty doesn't hold up very well so everything falls apart. I don't like tomatoes or pickles and they were happy to substitute them for the fried onions in mine- great addition. The highlight of the meal was the pea shoots with spicy mushrooms. Amazing flavors (not too spicy, not too saucy-oily) and great texture of the pea shoots. I was really looking forward to the gelato bc so many people rave about it. It was really great but I'm slightly annoyed that they force you into getting 2 scoops. Both flavors (peach and I believe butterscotch pecan?) I got ended up being so good I didn't mind in the end but I think it's a strange rule. My wife and I flew into JFK at like 10PM -- had to wait for a checked bag, then grab a taxi to Manhattan. Took forever. By the time we checked into our room at the Standard in East Village and got settled, we were STARVING. One problem: It was a Thursday night and most restaurants were already closed or closing. And since we were looking for vegan, the problem was compounded. We asked our daughter for advice and she suggested Superiority. Thank God she did. Superiority was GREAT, and open until 2AM. Late-night menu was limited, but we were very happy with the choices. I got a Trumer Pils beer, my wife the "best seltzer water in NYC," and we ordered a bunch of food: the TFT sandwich, pasta e fagioli soup, some sort of cauliflower thing -- all super tasty -- especially the TFT and the soup. I came here on a weekday for dinner. I always want to support a vegetarian/vegan spot, but this experience wasn't great. The biggest pro: I never thought I'd have any interest in a collards green sandwich, but it was amazing. It was even better than the famous burger (which was also good). The prices were a little inflated for the portion size. But the real issue is that the service is bad; they are trying to turn over tables as quickly as possible. We arrived on-time for our reservation and ordered drinks, entrees, and desserts in a timely manner. While I still had food on my entree plate, someone came by and literally just took it away without asking if I was finished. Within a minute of putting our desserts on our table, they brought the check to our table. At this point, we'd been at our table less than 50 minutes, and they were trying to push us out the door. They did the same thing at the table next to us, while they were still eating their entrees, and that couple had been seated a shorter amount of time than we had been seat. The tipping suggestions are also 20%, 25%, and 30%...after we had received bad service. It felt a very bad taste in my mouth. Several breathless reports from carnivorous friends convinced me that Superiority Burger was a must-try. One random Tuesday night close to Christmas, the famous long lines were absent, so a friend and I stopped in, full of enthusiasm and anticipation. The eponymous burger itself is nearly perfect: it it's vegetal, herbaceous, umami, substantial. It walks the tightrope of being its own thing and not trying to impersonate beef, while also successfully transmogrifying the essential good qualities of a meat burger (a hearty canvas for spices) into another context. The fries were excellent, too. Thick cut, crispy, soft inside. I was less enraptured by the straight vegetable dishes. We also tried the white sweet potato with labneh and a spaghetti squash special. They know what they're doing with vegetables: a sour, crispy or salty exterior always covers the umami warmth within. But I don't know if I just wanted more diner food - maybe I should have held out for a booth and gone for the tofu chicken sandwich - or what. Maybe I bored myself with my own virtue. The desserts were good. Commendable vegan pastries and nice soft serve. Definitely save room for that. The East Village diner aesthetic tries to insist that punk isn't dead, but I couldn't square the rebellious exterior with the in-house pastry chef and vegetarianism, or the fact that dinner for two with a cocktail apiece totaled $150. I remember Williamsburg's winking irony circa 2010; it's not a good food seasoning. I'm trying to put my finger on why my Superiority Burger dinner didn't live up to my friends' hype. Stumbled upon the new restaurant post an exhibition nearby. We were a group of 9 - 4 adults and 5 children and decided to try the restaurant for a quick bite. We checked in and indicated we were a large group. The hostess was a bit apprehensive about the size but I said we were willing to split up to two different tables with different checks or even one check, what ever was easy for them. She said she had to speak to the manager who then came out and said sorry they could not accommodate as there were just too many children. I pointed out what if we were to separate families walking in - would she have declined? She kept coming up with different excuses and in the end I pointed out the restaurant was just not very family friendly. At that point she relented and sat us down in two separate tables at two opposites ends of the restaurant. We ordered the burger and waffles - as did the other table. The food was pretty yummy albeit smaller portions. The service once seated was also good and prompt. I ordered their namesake burger, the superiority burger ($20) and for dessert, got their seasonal ice cream which was watermelon sorbet & corn ice cream ($11). This is actually Superiority Burger 2.0, an expansion (and huge upgrade) from their original hole in the wall concept, which was located a few blocks away. Now operating in the historic space that was once Odessa Restaurant, the place has homey vintage punk rock diner vibes. I came here with two vegan friends, and was pleased to find that they can make nearly anything on the menu vegan. All the desserts were vegan too. We shared their famous Burnt Broccoli Salad, a delicious side featuring savory eggplant puree and pickled Fresno chilis. This is a must order, but my favorite small plate was the Sweet & Sour Beets, a beet salad with fried pretzels pieces on a bed of scallion cream cheese. Their namesake, The Superiority Burger, is entirely plant based and house made from scratch; no fake meat. It's texture is firm and somehow truly meaty, with a pleasantly crisp exterior. Everyone in my group loved it, from my strict vegan friends, to my meat eating husband. The only dish we did not love was the Collard Greens Sandwich. The greens themselves were tender and dripping in sharp cheddar cheese, but the focaccia was overly thick and dense, making it difficult to eat. Whatever you do, do not skip dessert. In fact, order at least 3 desserts. My favorite was the Pearl Pie, which was reminiscent of a Key Lime Pie, but with passionfruit custard and li hing puree on top, studded with tapioca pearls. Waited for about an hour for a table for 2 around 7 on a Saturday. You can't get a reservation here so go early and put your name down and go to a nearby bar (we waited at Lovers of Today and it was great!). Once we were seated, the food came out pretty quickly. Here's what we got: Burnt Broccoli Salad - this was not my cup of tea. They don't provide ingredients on their menu which is frustrating because there was a flavor in here (not sure what) but it was really overpowering for my taste. I know this is one of the most popular things here but I was not a fan. Sloppy Dave - this was also just ok. The burger came out really really soggy which was kind of off putting. The actual filling was ok, kind of bland/not much going on. I wouldn't get this. Our waitress recommended the Yuba Verde and our neighbors got it and said it was fantastic so wish we got that instead. Superiority Burger - this was probably the best thing we got, though a bit on the dry side so would ask for more sauces on the side. Very good flavor, soft buns, definitely get this if you come here. Griddled Malt Cake - This was ok as well. Coconut cake with cream cheese gelato. The cake itself was ok in my opinion but the gelato was really good! Wish I could just get a scoop of that on the side. Choco Haupia Pie - My favorite dessert of the two! Basically chocolate mudpie with a hint of coconut. Definitely good for people like me who like chocolate in their desserts! Overall, this place was on the pricey side and very average, nothing out of this world or mindblowingly tasty. I went to Superiority Burger after Pete Wells named it #8 on the NYT's 100 Best Restaurants in NYC and was left slightly disappointed. The interior of the restaurant is reminiscent of a cute diner with rainbow string lights and 50s-style diner booths and bar stools. The restaurant was bustling, despite us having a 9:30 pm reservation on Friday night. This restaurant is known for its all vegetarian (and largely vegan) offering that takes a fun spin on diner classics like burgers, sandwiches, shakes, etc. We got the Superiority Burger and the Collard Greens Sandwich to share. The Superiority Burger came with either fries or vegetables (and we opted for fries). I thought the burger to be a bit too floppy and soft for my taste. You can barely hold up the burger without it falling apart in your hands. The bun is like a soft roll, the veggie patty was a bit crumbly/mushy/soft. The flavors were all good though. It doesn't taste (or look) like a meat burger, but it was still yummy. The fries were also good (if not a bit on the salty side). Overall, was good not crazy good. This place is quite pricy, somewhat understandably so given that everything is vegetarian. Regardless, $20 for a burger has to mean that it's Delicious (capital D). Our Collard Greens Sandwich felt more novel/interesting. It reminded me of spinach artichoke dip because of the copious amounts of Cooper Sharp cheese that gave me the same creamy/rich feeling. I really enjoyed the seeded focaccia that it came on; it was toasty, crunchy, and paired well with the "mushy" texture of the collard greens. While I enjoyed the sandwich and am glad to have tried it, it was nothing insane. Final note, the service in the restaurant is subpar at best. I was greeted by a hostess who was somewhat rude/sassy. However, shortly after moving to New York I was hungry on a Saturday evening and realized this place was nearby, so my friend and I stopped by. At 5:30 pm it was already buzzing, but we were able to be seated instantly. I'm not sure if there was a wait further in the evening, but for the duration of our meal it seemed like all the tables were taken. My friend and I each got our own superiority burger, and we split the burnt broccoli. The sauce on the broccoli was interesting, but I think it got old after a few bites to be honest (and it was a MOUND of broccoli). The burger meanwhile was very tasty-- I appreciate the option of vegan cheese or not. I loved how they described each of the cocktails as a chair on their placemat. It makes for great conversation fodder as you wait for your food. Service was fast and friendly. All in all a solid spot, but I think the sides seem a little bit like a miss. This is the first review I've ever posted on Yelp and I'm posting it because I am sad by how much this once good restaurant has deteriorated. I have been a dozen times since opening in 2023 and have recommended it to many. Sadly, those recommendations have become fewer and fewer in the past year. Every time I have been in the past year, the food has slowly gotten worse. The service has gone from (aging) punk cool to mean and contemptuous. The prices have risen to the point of absurdity. Last week I gave it one more shot. I brought in a friend and their parent at 5:30pm. I figured that going before the dinner rush would give the staff a little more breathing room and the food and service would be decent. We walked into a sad and empty feeling room. The energy of the past was gone. There was no one behind the bar. The lights above the counter didn't even seem to be turned on. We were seated in an empty booth in the back. The server arrived and dropped off our menus without asking if we wanted anything. We attempted to order a drink from her, but she ignored us completely. Then she spent ten minutes talking with another server and the owner (you can tell how much he really cares) and ignored every attempt to politely signal that we wanted to order a drink or food. In an empty restaurant. At no point did our server serve other guests. As this bizarre situation dragged on and my guests started to get annoyed, I noticed the price of the Yuba Verde sandwich (no sides) had risen to $28. I started to laugh. Five more minutes go by with not even a chance of service. I walked out. I won't be returning again. There is no love in the food or in the hospitality. The sandwiches are the price of full entrees at restaurants. They are contemptuous of their guests. What was once a nice EV place is now a ripoff joint for tourists and rubes. Wow... I'm surprised at how underwhelmed my food and experience was. Having been a lactose intolerant vegetarian the past 14 years, any vegetarian restaurant gets my attention. This place always has a line outside, so after stumbling by with no line, I decided to pop in for dinner before meeting friends later. I was promptly seated at the bar at 7:02 and handed a water and a menu. I already intended to order the namesake burger, but took a quick gander. After the waitress circled back, I placed my order, no drink, no bells or whistles. Settling into my book, I was shocked when my order quickly arrived at 7:07. It was small for a US-sized burger, and for being priced at $18. Considering the going rate in NYC is about $19 for a burger and fries, this seemed steep. Taking a bite, I quickly was met with disappointment. Sure, the bun was pillowy like a potato bun, but it was small and quickly smooshed and devoured, much like a McDonalds burger. Considering I was seated, ordered, ate, paid my bill, and left the sit-down restaurant by 7:17, this hardly felt any different than McDonalds other than feeling a bit ripped off. The patty itself was no more exciting than a mushy black bean burger (which, by the way, is not exciting at all). Their sides are $10 and up, served on the same size plate as their small burgers but listed as "shareable". I'm less than 100 pounds and nothing looked shareable about their portions to me. Considering the many vegan options here in NY, I would say spend your money elsewhere. If you never eat vegan/vegetarian food, maybe this will intrigue you, otherwise I think you'll be underwhelmed. read more

I don't understand why Superiority Burger doesn't have a higher rating. I went there on a sweltering Monday and ordered the tofu-fried tofu sandwich and a beet salad. The salad was the perfect antidote to the slumpy weather with its crisp, sweet-and-sour beets, fresh dill, piquant dressing, and, best of all, little fried pretzel pieces that took that salad and elevated it to the level of a treat. So many flavors and textures, from salty to sweet to sour to crisp to creamy to firm and crunchy, with the jewel tones of the beets complemented by the green, feathery dill, white dressing, and earthy pretzel nuggets. So far so good! Then, the tofu sandwich. If you're a vegetarian like me, you've tried your share of bean curd and you know that a slab of tofu as the centerpiece of a dish carries a red light warning of potential sogginess and blandness. This tofu had a smoked flavor and texture that struck the right balance between watery and meaty, with a perfectly crisp breading. Toothsome indeed, but enhanced by slaw, dressing, and what must have been a homemade sesame-studded focaccia. So far, lunch was outstanding. Dessert was the only less-than-perfect dish; I ordered a vegan tutti-frutti cake made of polenta and coconut with a colorful fruit topping. It was too sweet, with a strange, candy-like flavor. Eh, it was still dessert, and who can blame the kitchen for experimenting? The server was kind to me in my disheveled, sweat-logged state and poured me many cups of water as I raved about the food. As a postscript, I've been hankering to try this place ever since it opened, and have been thwarted various times. As I live in the DC area, I don't get to New York often, so I was so happy that I made the schlep down to Avenue A and, at long last, had the Superiority Burger experience of my dreams. The burger is just ok. However, the focaccia sandwich and the desserts exceeded all my expectations. Inside, I love the classic nyc diner vibe with a retro modern touch. The place is always busy and the servers are so nice. I would come back for the pies any day. read more

Um, so I think I have a problem... I don't think I'll be able to stop coming to Superiority Burger for as long as I am a New Yorker so that pretty much means forever. I would always past the original location on my way to Confectionery and not know what was going on there. It was always busy with people standing about on the tiny block that is 9th street. Once again today, on my way to Confectionery I was in the neighborhood. My phone was on its last leg and I was getting hungry so I decided to stop near somewhere local. Looking up the address, I was able to see that SB had moved but was not too far. As I approached I saw the long line and hopped on since it was nearing the opening time. I am so happy I stopped by today which was coincidentally their opening weekend. This place is truly amazing! No matter how good the food is, if the service is not it, then the place is not a place I want to be. The team at SB was beyond hospitable despite the stress that comes with an opening weekend. The food was amazing. The Superiority Burger might be my favorite burger beating the one I had in Paris. The lentils and cornbread was delicious and comforting. I want to order it again on Monday (yes, I will be back so soon since I'm off) but I think I should try some other items. I thought I was smitten with burger but the banana bread is truly phenomenal. It is probably my favorite dessert ever and I'm not even a banana person. Every part of it was a star. The chocolate, the gelato, the, candied walnuts, and of course the banana bread itself. I wish I had asked for her name (she was the best... kind, helpful, and funny... so much so I kept ear hustling her convos with my neighboring patrons) but the server who attended to my section mentioned that they're planning to be open pretty much all day. SB has got me saying I can't wait for Monday (I'm shocked too... yeah I'm definitely not going to attempt Saturday or Sunday though lol). read more

Came for brunch. I suspect that the positive reviews were all for dinner because brunch was a SERIOUS miss. Positives: yes, the burger is good. Is it $18 good? No, it is not. It is a small 3 inch thin patty with more lettuce than burger. If you want a side you'll shell out $13 for hashbrowns which were pathetically small. Bread plate size; SMALL bread plate size. The $16 shake? It was oddly salty and came in a 4 ounce water glass. Come on, you jest? Nope. No I don't. 4 ounce water glass. It was embarrassing. Am I now going to shell out $18 for a slice of pie? You know, fool me once, shame on you...we stopped there. Got the check and made it in time to line up for donuts at Wild Air which helped restore my faith in restaurant humanity. This was so underwhelming. I expect dinner is better but if this is the best they got for brunch? Hard pass. read more

Superiority Burger has long been one of my favorite places to eat; when their home was a tiny storefront on 9th street, we would queue around the block for amazing taste treats. Now that Brooks Headley--one of the owners--has occupied the longtime space of the Odessa, a Ukrainian diner on Avenue A, he has more options and also: a liquor license! I generally wear my earplugs in this place, because I have hearing loss and don't want it to get worse. SB reminds me strongly of another favorite diner of mine in the 80s: 103 Second avenue, at Second Avenue and Sixth street. They had a jukebox, and the vibe is the same. (103 was 24 hours.) I can't afford to eat here often, but I have appreciated when they've expanded their hours. They have hosted--ooh! aah!--celebrity guests in their curtained-off back room, and they are already a staple of the neighborhood. read more

I finally made it out to to try some of their brunch items and honestly, just thinking about this post has me hungry to return. Highly recommend everything we got to share between the two of us: - Chuck Bettis Breakfast 'Chorizo' sandwich. So flavorful, you wouldn't even realize this is vegetarian. - Idaho Spud Hashbrowns: the perfect texture and mix of crunch and saucy. My only gripe is that I wanted more! The portion size was a bit small but maybe that's because I shared it - Waffle with Guava Butter. This was such an interesting texture that I wasn't expecting. It was super crunchy and (fried?) but was absolutely addictive. I love the diner atmosphere and will absolutely be back soon. 4.8/5 read more

We enjoyed this, even if we don't totally understand the hype. We loved the marcella beans with escarole/halloumi/jalopenos. I really liked the spicy lentils with cornbread, but it was a little bit too heavy for my wife. We both thought the sweet potato was great. The superiority burger and the collards sandwich were both very good. We both really enjoyed the chocolate peppermint cake for dessert. read more

Call me a 2nd-wave Superiority Burger eater as I've eaten many more meals now at the current, new location over the former, original spot on 9th Street. The staff are super sweet and patient with providing updates on waiting time; every waiter has a friendly and unique personality, willing to have a convo when able! While I miss the classic Odessa decorations, SB has maintained the look and inserted more memories of the East Village with relevant and exciting decorations and posters including an advertisement flier from See Hear, a former zine shop around the corner, or personal photographs of former vegan restaurants (i.e. Dojo) and punk bands of the neighborhood. While I've enjoyed just about every meal I've had since they opened, I don't think I've ever had a better waffle than the one I ate yesterday, on their second day of offering lunch service. Served with syrup and creamy guava butter, I didn't want the waffle to go cold so ate probably too quickly. I topped it off with a classic, megamouth burger and the lunch tray-- served with a notably amazing pineapple and apple cider desert, and focaccia cinnamon bun. I cannot wait for what they introduce next. RIP Odessa, but the spot has a bright future with a new host. read more
