After coming here several times I thought I would write a new review. For the most part I enjoy the meals I have here, but the quality of sushi definitely varies depending on the day. For example, we usually order blue fin tuna and toro, sometimes it's really good and sometimes it's pretty mediocre. Favorite rolls = Final Fantasy, Crunchy, Baked Scallop Rolls to avoid = Candy Cane, Sunrise Overall it's a great spot for sushi in the Tustin area if you don't want AYCE like Sake 2 Me or Sushi Damu. Definitely beats Oki Doki's sushi quality as well. The free sake with Yelp check-in is a plus. The only thing I don't like is that you can't combine any offers with an item redemption on the Five Stars app. read more

Ambiance - in a strip mall, restaurant was clean Service - waitress was nice enough but when we asked what type of beer they carried she named only 2 and as we were leaving we noticed they actually served our favorite beer. Food - came out very fast but unfortunately it was bad. The shumai was decent, the sesame chicken was old. It was like they just reheated the chicken from days before, it was super tough. The crazy burrito was all krab, garlic edamame was interesting, I can't even explain. Salmon, unagi and yellow tail sushi was tough and chewy, we could not eat it and the flaming salmon roll was okay. This is another decent option if you're just wanting your sushi fix at more affordable prices. They have an extensive menu with rolls, hot foods, and of course, sushi. I was craving something warm for my belly that day, so got the unagi bowl. My husband got the poke bowl. Both dishes were just okay. The unagi dinner portion was generous, but the sauce didn't taste like the standard unagi sauces I'm used to - it was really thick, too salty, and not sweet enough. My husband's poke bowl had kind of a strange presentation - it came in a huge, flat bottomed bowl, with lots of mixed greens and some sushi, but the portion size looked deceiving because of the wide, large bowl. That's exactly how the Japanese culture does it. Mixing weird things, and weird concepts. Sushi? Yeah they got that... and fish choices you've never heard of. It's not just Tuna, Salmon, Snapper, and Red Tail... they have other options, including Escarole (which most spots pass off as 'white tuna'). Blue Crab Handrolls are awesome... etc. etc. I could go on and on about what's good, but if you understand Sushi, you should stop in and see what kind of different options you can try. Having been turned down by 2 Japanese restaurants and found this place out of our last resort and thank God because this place is awesome! Front desk host very charming and polite, waiters so attentive, polite, and good looking too but they make sure your cared for as far as condiments you need, refilling drinks and others. I got the 10 piece combo and the majority of the sashimi was inedible. It was tough to chew on and it definitely was not fresh. Some of the nigiri was barely edible. I had to wash down the majority of them with water and some of them I just had to spit out. On top of that the rice and the fish were dry. The roll was okay but a bit underwhelming. My recommendation is that if you're ever going to come here, do yourself a favor and just get the rolls and perhaps get sashimi and/or nigiri else where. read more

Sometimes you find places on Yelp, and then sometimes you find places by constantly watching your friend's Snapchat stories. Having seen enough snaps from my friend (plus confirming with him, of course), I was convinced that Sushi Bear was at least worth a try. It's not like I've been able to find a stable go-to sushi place anywhere in SoCal thus far anyways. Decided on the omakase (which is not on the menu), as I've been on a pretty significant omakase kick. Besides, I prefer to measure a sushi restaurant's quality on actual sushi, not Americanized rolls. Although the fish selection wasn't of super rare quality, the cuts of fish were very thick and of fresh quality. For 10 pieces at $39, you can't really get much better quality or value IMO. My girlfriend did get some rolls, but because she has to be gluten-free we ended up getting the sauce on the side. I think I might have to do that more often at sushi restaurants, because the rolls tasted WAY BETTER without all the sauce slathered over it. Now that I think about it, I'm totally for rolls if you can avoid all the crazy sauces and judge the rolls on the quality of the ingredients. Again, the fish is pretty fresh here and the roll cuts are significantly huge relative to the usual roll I'd see elsewhere. Service was solid, nothing spectacular or bad to note. The parking lot is definitely one of the crappier, cramped ones, so be careful when you're parking here. Not saying Sushi Bear is one of the best sushi places ever. BUT given the price and quality, I have no problem giving out five stars. Definitely want to come back! read more

Solid sushi place in the area with decent prices! I highly recommend getting the sushi bear combo. It has choices of sashimi and nigiri by the chef and a roll! It can fill 2 people as well! I usually get mine with a rainbow roll and since I came with a group of 3 added a dragon crunch roll. Their fish tastes fresh and the service is good. I would definitely go back and try their other rolls, especially the spicy ones! I came on a weekday around 7:30 and there was no wait and parking was not an issue! The worst sushi I have ever had. The rating for this place is wrong. First, I should have known when Suishi restaurant is providing soy sauce from some Panda brand that tastes like dark soy sauce. Then we order hot tea and we were served with lukewarm and almost clear color tea. We complained and the right type of tea was served. When the main course was served it was just ordinary. You really can't screw up with udon if you're a Japanese restaurant. The udon broth had a flavor of dark soy sauce again and it's not authentic Japanese. The simple Calif roll and spicy tuna cut roll was decent, but not authentic again. Lastly, the sashimi salad was all greens and only 5 sliver of sashimi for $18. It was worth the cost. My boyfriend and I come here frequently, and they never disappoint. There are so many rolls to choose from, the sushi is amazing, and the staff is really nice. Everything I've had here has been really great. The beau and I usually order a couple of rolls and quite a few orders of sashimi- the rolls are generous in size, and the sashimi is always melt in your mouth delicious- always fresh! The prices are very fair too! It's not a "cheap" restaurant, but it's not a super expensive one, like, sushi house unico in Beverly glen either. Compared to other sashimi salads I had in other places theirs had only a few pieces of fish and the rest was Just leafy vegetables as fillers to make the salad look big. And the excessive leafy greens also overpowers the fish in my opinion. For about $17 I think it's way overpriced and underwhelming Natural viagara Roll: so so. The shrimp tempura in the sushi was cold and a little stale (compared to other sushi places that seems to make the tempura fresh). Overall I think it's underwhelming and kinda pricey for the value and taste of food. I see they have lunch special, that might be better - I'm willing to come back to give that a try. I was looking for a good sushi place in Tustin and I found this one. It's not in the typical restaurant plaza and it's off near McFadden. However, the place is pretty good. The sashimi was fresh and the rolls were delicious. I like their tempura udon as well. If you get the Bear lunch sushi and sashimi combo for $38, you will be more than full. It comes with miso soup and salad. I got the 9 piece sashimi, clam miso soup and tempura udon. I enjoyed it very much. For Thinsulin fans, you can order the sashimi and miso soup. Pretty much a 5 star rating in terms of food but one thing should be improved in the future...That menu is so hard to read, it's just a bucket of words with no separation. They attempted to highlight the name of the rolls but it just doesn't work well in the dim atmosphere of this restaurant. Also I understand they are trying to be funny, but I'm not sure those names like "I Did you GF" or "taste like my exgf" are that great of an idea for the younger or more mature patrons. That being said...of course we had to get the "Natural Viagra" I like their little appetizer of fried wonton skins with a churro-ish coating. Their rolls and fish are all very fresh. Never Coming Back Again! Originally gave a good review but now am changing. I am currently still shocked about my experience here at this establishment and how they treat their customers. What a dissapointment and unacceptable customer service! Background: Wifey and I are current Tustin residents who live down the street from the restaurant. The Experience: During our ordering we had some questions about the Final Fantasy Roll and if the "SSM" Sauce was spicy. The server, said "No, not at all...On a scale of 1-10, he would rate it a 3." Ok Great, we decided to order that because it sounded like a pretty good roll and a good assortment of fish on top. Look as I get older, my love for spicy food has gone away. However, I still order things like Spicy Tuna Roll, Wasabi, siracha etc. In fact, on this same very night I ordered the Neptune Dazzler which also had spicy crab. In my head 3 out of me, means Del Scorcho sauces from Del Taco. We both took one bite from this Final Fantasy Roll it killed or taste buds because it was way too spicy. Loaded with Siracha and some other ingredient that made the sushi unbearable to eat. We requested the waiter to take it back and let them know that this was way too spicy to eat. We only ate two pieces out of the 10 rolls, me and the wifey. The restaurant did NOTHING to accommodate us. Didn't ask if we wanted something else, or how they could make it better. We just sat there with fire mouth dying because it killed the rest of the meal. When the bill came, SURPRISE SURPRISE. They still charged us for that shit roll. Didn't not take it off the bill. UNACCEPTABLE! Never have I been to a place where we asked them to take the food back and they did not put the customer first. Woman at front said "sorry no refund on sushi". It's not like we are the whole thing, we each had one and could not finish the dish because the server was wrong to tell us how spicy it was. If this is the type of service they give to repeat customers like us who live in the neighborhood, you can best bet that we will never come back again. This place has a lot of good reviews and decent sushi but the prices here are way too high especially for being in Tustin. If they treat you like this then feel free to go somewhere else. Back to the OC for a short visit and I had to check out this place. As I was visiting one of my friends we decided to do our usual sushi binge so after going through the menu I couldn't stop laughing. I dare even the most anal retentive person not to laugh at least once. If you're on a date, it certainly is a conversation piece, especially if your date is a little on the bland side. You can always order, "Taste like my ex-girlfriend, burning sensation, or kiss of fire." (In my line of work that usually sounds like an STD, but hey, not judging here) We decided to keep it classy and ordered a rainbow roll, uni, and blue fin tuna. With the amusing menu aside, the fish was fresh, the customer service stellar, and the restaurant clean. Parking could be cramped in this little lot, as is parking in this part of Tustin usually is. Revisited there in March 2022 and it was horrible. It looks like the restaurant hasn't been cleaned in decades. there are signs everywhere with curled edges (old signs) demanding you wear a face mask, (no longer mandated at that time) we walked in there at 11:59 and we're told they were not open and that they would be opening in one minute. Hahahahaha Then they had no menus or QR codes on the tables. You've had to stand at the entry and scan your restaurant menu QR code "sign", which was only located one place in the restaurant. I had high expectations for this place I guess from all the reviews but now that I'm reading the recent reviews looks like maybe a change in ownership but im not sure. Support your local mom and pop shops!! I actually discovered Sushi Bear at the beginning of Covid, and have been coming here for the best takeout sushi ever since. Their dining rooms have not reopened at the time of writing this review. Everything that I have tried so far have been bangers. They specialize in cut rolls and, man, each piece is HUGE! Neptune Dazzler and Natural Viagra are my usual go-to's, but today I was feeling the classic Cali roll ($5) with soy paper. It was my first time trying anything soy paper and omg, each piece was like ~melt in your mouth butter~ The $2 upcharge for soy paper has me sold from here on out! Their salmon sashimi ($6.5) did not disappoint either, and came with 3 beautifully thicc slabs of yummy fresh salmon. Indoor seating only with booths, tables, and sushi bar seating options. FOOD: Lots of rolls you can choose from! I always end up getting the bento / combination dinner options. Good amount of choice and good portion of food - left full! Second choice would've been the chirashi bowls (they offer a standard and deluxe). Came here on a date night with my fiancé. It was absolutely packed. We ordered a variety of items but I would have to say it was mehhhh altogether. Not horrible but not amazing either. Just meh. Not worth the check. They have TONS of options for rolls that it was almost overwhelming. It's annoying to me when rolls are so large you cannot eat in one bite and it forces you to bite in half...then it's a mess. All plates were gorgeous but taste was not congruent with the look. Was looking forward to the wagyu on salt block but it was very meh. Would not order again. Ordered the garlic Albacore carpaccio and it was just fish in ponzu no garlic taste and fish was yuck. We enjoyed our negitoro sushi the most out of all the items. All the other fish did not taste fresh. Def cute aesthetic but to me not so much worth the trip. Took foreverrrrrr to receive each item because of how slammed the sushi chefs were. Made the experience a bit less enjoyable because there were only three sushi chefs for the entire packed restaurant. No server really stopped to help us out with the menu and looked annoyed when we needed to order anything. I'm surprised Sushi Bear has such high reviews. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad place for sushi and rolls, but I think my experience was just okay. Prices were what I expected and service was good, but I haven't been back since my first time there a few months ago even though it's super close to where I live. It gets good business though so they must be doing something right. I went there for dinner on a Saturday and there was about a 20-minute wait for 2 people. We ordered the poki tuna salad ($13.95), the yellowtail collar ($10.95), and the ichiban roll ($13.95). Everything tasted just fine, but nothing was that memorable. I think I was most disappointed with the poki tuna salad. They tried to be cute by putting it in this plastic light up martini glass, but that already goes to show you how small the portion was. No greens in the poke salad either, which was surprising. The free sake with yelp check-in was nice (only one per table). Parking can be tough since they're in this small plaza, but you can try the lot behind them where Taco Factory is. Not sure if you're allowed to, but I doubt anyone is checking if you're there at night. read more
