Man, people are generous with their stars on Yelp. I've driven past this restaurant a hundred times as a studio I use is right across the street. Hidden in an obscure strip mall across from Ralphs, and I never thought to go to Sushi Dake until I saw all the positive reviews on yelp. I was a bit disappointed when I opened the menu. The menu was a venerable smorgasbord of sushi, faux-sushi rolls, tempura, udon, teriyaki of all shapes and sizes. As the adage goes, "jack of all trades, master of none". This usually holds true for restaurants. Nevertheless, I decided to order off of the sushi menu. I ordered mostly the basics--tuna, hamachi, salmon, albacore, uni. Not wanting to venture into the funky named faux-sushi rolls, I ordered a simple roll to finish it off. The look of the sushi wasn't all that bad--the cuts were well proportioned with a decent balance between the fish and rice. The fish looked rather lean, however, which indicated that they use cheaper fish. That doesn't mean the fish isn't fresh, just that the grade of the fish isn't high. Tasting the fish confirmed my intial assessment. The tuna, hamachi, and salmon were VERY lean. The albacore wasn't bad, but I think the sauce they used helped mask the flavor of the fish. The uni was surprisingly decent--probably the best of the bunch. The biggest disappointment was their rice. The rice wasn't seasoned properly, so it tasted bland. Well seasoned rice really enhances the flavor of the fish, and poorly seasoned rice makes everything taste bland and flavorless. The combination of lean fish and bland rice was a one-two punch that left me a bit irked when I saw the bill. It ended up being $36 for 5 orders of sushi and one roll. Considering you can get deluxe sushi lunch at Takao or Mori for $25, Sushi Dake's prices are quite hard to swallow. That's pretty insane considering most of their non-sushi dishes and combos were around $11. I think I would have been much better off ordering the combos. Will I come back here again? Actual rating: 3.5 out of 5. Prior to us moving up to the Bay for our brief rendezvous up there (hint: sushi in the Bay is bad, just bad selection all around), we came to this spot EVERY friday. Recently returning back to LA for good, we came here on Friday for our sushi again. Prior to us moving, they had two hilarious and sarcastic sushi chefs. My then-fiance drove Gary insane with order the exact same specialty-made sushi just for him. The chef must have been relieved once we were gone...hell, Gary's even gone as well :(. That's a bummer because Gary was an awesome sushi chef there. If anyone's reading this and know where he took off to, please let me know! Anywho, this is a family owned business, no frills type of place. The staff is friendly and service here is pretty good. Leave the attitude at home and the service will be just fine. Their prices have gone up a bit since we moved away about 8 months ago. The quality of the fish is still a 3.5-4 out of 5, depending on which fish. The salmon sushi (2 piece) is a simple way to gauge how fresh the fish is here. Most of the time, it's pretty fresh and the fish can borderline melt in your mouth (aka: that's a good sign; too chewy=no bueno). Don't come here for the meal combos. They're all tasteless and I'm assuming most people order that thinking they'll get the most bang for their bucks. Stick with the sushi. The specialty rolls on the board are a hit and miss, but overall, anything you order here, it should meet your cut of what sushi entails. I forget what time they say they get their fish, but several times a week. There are 2 new chefs since leaving LA and returning. They're friendly, quick and personal, but there's just something missing when you get the order at times...perhaps it's something along the lines of pride when you get your food. Sometimes, it looks put together half-ass (uh, it's a bite of fish on top of rice folks) and then there are days where presentation just makes the difference. Since moving back to LA and this was our go-to spot, we'll give it a few more shots to see if we'll have this place be our permanent sushi joint yet again, or we'll just have to eat our way through Sushi lane on Ventura blvd from Studio City to Encino to find the right one. read more

One of my go-to spots for lunch whenever I am craving sushi, or just something "light." Small space, I'd say maybe 10 tables or so, with 1 table outside. 3 sushi chefs, and 2 older japanese ladies that are the servers. They are all SO cute and SO nice. The lunch box is always a great option for lunch - comes with options like chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, etc - miso soup, salad, and sushi options. The sushi options are limited but delicious nonetheless. You either get 3 chef's choice, california roll, or spicy tuna. Great size, definitely going back to the office with food coma. I've also ordered JUST sashimi and hand rolls here as well, which are amazing. My favorites are the 50/50 hand roll, and I think there is one called the blue crab? Its on the "specials" menu. Also one of my faves is toro, and ono. When I go the full sushi route I usually spend about $30 for my portion... the lunch box is $11.95! Lots of parking (same lot as CVS) and never a long wait. read more

Came here for a casual dinner on a Thursday evening before closing. The place was filled with other patrons and the baseball game was playing. Parking was super easy and I was greeted by the staff. The food was great, I got some special rolls and a bit of salmon sashimi and the yellowtail carpaccio which is a must. Their blue crab hand rolls are also delicious but my friend ate more of that than I did. The food was fresh and tasted great. As for the service, even though it was packed, it's a pretty intimate restaurant and the waitress was very attentive to our needs and came by exactly when we needed it and checked up on us constantly. I've been coming here for years and always have enjoyed the food. The service quality during the past year has not been great. I know it's COVID, I get it. But all the more reason to be proactive and try to retain your clientele. They just don't seem very interested in actually retaining customers or selling food. The last few times I've ordered (or tried to order) it's been less than a pleasant experience. I called to order 45 min before they closed one night and they told me the kitchen was already closing so they weren't taking orders. Hmmm - this is like Oct 2020, you can't tell me one more sale wouldn't help the bottom line. Fast forward to trying to call today and the phone literally just doesn't get picked up. I drive over to place my order in-person and it's seems they've just decided to not answer the phone and take orders over the phone. Again, I'd think any business would be great right now. It's close and convenient, the food is good. Super friendly and helpful staff. When my usual sushi spot was closed on a Monday, I found this gem using Yelp Search for my map area. They were closing in 15 minutes so I called right away without seeing a menu. I let them know what I wanted, they helped me find a special roll I was craving, and told them I would be in 10 minutes. When I showed up, they were happy to have me - very inviting! I paid, my food was ready (they had the World Cup on the TV too) and I left. Its fresh, but low quality. Prices are high, considering the grade of the fish. Instead, I would recommend Midori sushi on Ventura in Studio City. You can get "all you can eat" there for around $28.00 a person, and the fish quality is equal to this place. You'd spend about that much for two rolls and one order of sushi from here. They answer all of my questions without making me feel stupid like some of those more well-known Sushi places along Ventura, you know which ones I'm talking about. This place is very small. 6 tables and about a dozen chairs crammed into the bar. I would recommend calling ahead and placing an order for pickup during the busy hours - at least that's what I did. I ordered the lunch box with vegetable tempura and a cucumber roll. It also came with miso soup, salad and rice. For $11, it was quite a lot of food. I placed my order around 12:45, and she quoted me a 20 - 25 minute wait time. I arrived to pick it up around 1:05, and didn't get it until 1:20. But you know what? It was totally worth the wait. The salad was crisp and fresh, and the ginger dressing was EXCELLENT! Easily the best ginger dressing I've ever had. Ever. Like honestly, I want to go back and order just a container of the dressing - it was just that good. The rice was steamed perfectly - the toasted sesame seeds on top added a nice flavor to it as well. And the miso soup was still piping hot when I got back to the office. The vegetable tempura was composed of 6 pieces (asparagus, sweet potato, carrot, broccoli, zucchini and regular potato) and it wasn't at all greasy like at other places, however, the batter didn't have much flavor. All of the flavor came from the dipping sauce. Also, the broccoli had a weird, kind of mushy texture to it, but the other pieces made up for it. The cucumber roll was quite large, even though it was only 4 pieces, and the ginger it was served with was extremely fresh. And the best part? It totally filled me up and satisfied my craving for Japanese food. I definitely want to come back and sit down for a meal, maybe try a few different sushi rolls. I have also decided that this is my new place to grab lunch for work when I'm craving sushi or the like. They're reasonably priced and the portion sizes are good. The Y2K roll almost gave me an orgasm!!! (am I allowed to say that?!?!!?) Being a veggie head, I was a bit skeptical about this place, but I kept an open mind. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the veggie rolls were not an afterthought. This comes with teryaki of choice, 4 cali rolls, 5 sushi and 3 sashimi (both of which are sushi makers choice). It also comes with a salad and miso soup. We ordered some seaweed salad as well. Everything was amazing. The service was very good, we never felt like our waitress had abandoned us. At one point my girlfriend spilled some teriyaki sauce on her sleeve and the woman whom I assumed was managing saw it and brought over a rag dipped in soda water. We didn't even have to ask her. This is my favorite go-to spot when I'm in town for business. Family atmosphere, great local conversations, and amazing sushi at a fair price. The freshness of the fish here is what keeps me coming back. The sake melts in your mouth, and I almost always order another sake sushi before I'm ready to give it up. The nori is fresh and has the right smell and texture. Even the salad dressing on the house salad is top notch. The yellowtail hand roll was one of the best I've had, and the maguro sushi was delicious as usual. Ive been coming here regularly since about 2003, and it still has the same appeal. Always drove by this place. One day finally decided to check it out with a friend. Had a variety of sushi: tuna, yellowtail, eel and akbacore. Their albacore is the best I have ever tasted. This is my new go-to sushi spot. I have been here every week for the past 6 months or so. The owner is always so friendly and welcoming (fist-bump), the servers are the sweetest, and the sushi guys behind the bar are the best. Not to mention the sushi is fresh, cold, and dee-lish-ous! We stop by once a week after my night class to have sushi night. The semester just ended, but sushi nights never end.
