I tried this place today after living in Burbank for over a year. I have kept passing by here but never went in. Today was the day. I went with a friend and we were seated promptly and they did their best with her wheelchair. We ordered from the bar. Everything was fresh and tasty. John was my sushi chef and was attentive and got our doers right. The food was good and the price was as expected. The selection was also good and I will be back to try more of their foods. If you live in Burbank or near by, drop in. They are usually not crowded on weekdays so it might be easier then. read more

A friend and I walked in, there were a lot of people but the front section is available. I was told that we have to wait, so I asked how long is the wait. The wait is 20mins, I said okay. So we waited. Group of 3 came in and was told the same thing, the wait is 20mins. Lady asked them right away, would you like a table or bar. How come We weren't asked that question. They sat us all the way to the end even though there's empty seats in the front.. we were ignored and orders were not taken until we told them we were ready about 5x. Went to walk in to order takeout (we go there at least 6-8x a year)...I was the only one waiting for a menu/someone to say hello/ask me what I needed...for over 5 mins they processed orders, answered phones, took payments...I asked if I could order to go and see a menu, she told me to wait...I waited 5 more mins and walked out. I see they were busy, but it's not difficult to hand a menu to me, and a slip to write my order. I walked out and they said nothing. I work in CS and this was crazy. Dodgers 6 Diamondback 5 FINAL SCORE!!!!! What the hell does that have to do with Sushi you say? Well, nothing except for enhancing one of the best Sushi experiences of my life! So, my Sushi cohort and I were feening for some wet gold and we couldn't think of anyplace around North Hollywood that was cheap and good. Then we remembered the reviews of the hidden gem that is Sushi Dake. We called for reservations and the sweet women let us know that before, it was busy, but now, it is quiet. Quiet, Close, Cheap, Good...I think we had a winner. Upon arrival, I noticed that it was in an awkward alley type strip mall with a Donut Prince Donut shop on the corner. I love donuts and interesting names, so I knew that was a good sign. As a matter of fact, one day I want to meet this so called Prince. Anyways.... The place is great, cute and has pics of all the locals and regulars on the wall...all gleaming with bright sushi induced smiles. First of all, when ordering. I asked if the Toro was fresh today. Not only did our waitress say yes....she ROLLED her eyes as far back in her head as humanly possible and said, Oh yes it is! We got some Yellow Tail, Albacore, Fresh Water Eel, Toro, Toro Roll, Spicy Scallop Roll and just for fun a "What's That Roll" I typically am not down for the novelty rolls or rolls in general but it was good. The fish was fresh, super fresh, the Albacore was SO yummy that my Amiga gave me her extra piece, seeing how it made my face melt when I ate it. Overall, it was some of the tastiest sushi I have had and I'm a tough, some say snobby, judge when it comes to this. Another plus was the fact that the entire bill came to about 80 bucks. And we had beer and cold sake to boot! In closing- I was completely happy with my meal and was getting up to wash my hands, feeling all fat and happy, when I noticed that the Dodger game was on. It had been on the entire time and I was so giddy with sushi that I didnt notice. That being said, I now did notice and it was the 10th inning, 2 Outs, with no man on base and the dodgers up to bat. 1.5 stars (All 1.5 stars go to the tuna and albacore) Oh Yelp. Sometimes you can disappoint so much. It's as if you recommended Mary Poppins only to let me later discover she has a crystal meth addiction and got incarcerated for child abuse. This review is for lunch. THE IMPRESSION: When I arrived at 12:30pm for lunch today, the place was absolutely packed. A full house at a restaurant with a shabby decor is usually a good sign. Then, I noticed the workers and chefs were Korean. My friend didn't believe me so he asked and confirmed it. I don't have anything against non-Japanese owning and cooking Japanese food but from my experience, the odds of finding a great non-Japanese owned sushi restaurant in the States are truly stacked against you. THE ORDER: I wanted to try as many pieces of fish as possible so I ordered the lunch special with 8 pieces of sushi and 4 pieces of sashimi. This costs $16.95 and patrons are unable to specify what kind of fish they want since the chef decides. I also ordered the chilean sea bass which was a featured appetizer dish. The price of this appetizer was unlisted. My friend ordered the Lunch Box Special with Salmon Teriyaki and spicy tuna roll for $10.95. THE VERDICT: The chilean sea bass came out first. It was lightly fried and laid on a bed of green leafs. A sweet sauce was drizzled over the sea bass. The fish was obnoxiously salty and the sauce violated rather than complemented the dish. Perhaps it was my fault for ordering a cooked fish at a sushi restaurant but seafood is seafood and it's not difficult to prepare a decent sea bass. My sushi / sashimi combo came out and the sushi pieces were: Tuna, Egg, Shrimp, Crab, Albacore, Snapper, Salmon, and Yellowtail. The four pieces of sashimi were: Albacore, Salmon, Tuna, and Snapper. The quality of the fishes were average. If I had to choose the best of the bunch, I would have to say the tuna and the albacore were superior to everything else. The yellowtail and salmon were okay as well. However, one of the indicators I use to see if a place serves great sushi is by eating the snapper (which was in both sushi and sashimi form here). The snapper sashimi was so tough I thought I was eating fish jerky! I couldn't tear the fish apart with my teeth and after about thirty seconds of battling the nastiness in my mouth, I had to spit the snapper out. I was naturally suspicious of the snapper sushi and as expected, I was greeted with the same rough and chewy texture. That piece came out of my mouth as well. Sadly enough, I've never had a worse snapper in my life than today at Sushi Dake. I didn't try my friend's teriyaki salmon or spicy tuna roll but he told me he wasn't going to ever return to the restaurant as the salmon was overcooked and had that "fishy" taste restaurants try to avoid. He also said the spicy tuna roll was forgettable. What makes this humorous is that this is coming from a guy who isn't picky at all. THE SLAP: The total damage for today's very measly meal was $50 without including tip. $50 is fine for good sushi during lunch but you must remember my friend and I ordered lunch "specials" and had an appetizer! Sushi Dake poured salt over my open wound with the bill. I'm surprised they had enough salt in inventory since I thought all of the salt in store was used to over-season my sea bass appetizer. THE CONCLUSION: Sushi is meant to be ingested, not regurgitated. I know Burbank isn't known for Japanese food so if you get a craving and you're looking for quality sushi and sashimi, make that drive to Studio City or Little Tokyo. If you're under a time constraint during the daytime, wait for dinner and go elsewhere. If you're forced to go because of your boss or a birthday gala, opt for the tuna or albacore. The salmon and yellowtail are average at best. read more

Ahh...the sushi journey wages on. So as everyone clearly knows, Wednesday night is 'Sushi Night in America." or "SNiA" for those short on time. And now, being full time Burbankonian or Burbanxican (however the locals may refer to themselves) It was time to give a new place a try. Most people would keep driving past this place due to its outside appearance and despite my knowing better (that sometimes a shitty exterior can hide magic within) when we parked the car outside I almost opted to go somewhere else too. But I thought, hey if it's no good then I can cross them off my sushi checklist and we don't need to ever go back. So, how was it? Uhhhh, not bad. The oysters on the half shell were pretty good, nice presentation too. We ordered our regular sushi items: Yellow tail, ono, scallops, albacore, salmon, fresh water eel, and a couple of their specials: a white fish deal, and this tuna roll with crab on the inside. Nothing was bad, it was all fine. But nothing was great either. All and all it was a little disappointing. One reason that I love sushi and look forward to "Sushi Night in America" each week is for the moments of bliss. If you enjoy sushi you probably understand what I mean. That bite of which ever fish that evening which is so perfect and fresh that gives your taste buds a pure moment of happiness. Like I said, while everything we had here was perfectly decent, no bliss was to be found. Wow, I hate to be a buzzkill, but this was one of the worst sushi lunches I've had in recent history. I had the 10.99 lunch box, with salmon teriyaki and sushi (3 pieces). The salmon teriyaki was super thin, and drenched in a sauce that was more like maple syrup than teriyaki. This was accompanied by 3 tiny pieces of sushi, maguro (tuna), which was rubbery and tasteless, Tai (whitefish) which didn't have much flavor, and a passable but small piece of salmon. For the price, it was a very small amound of food, not that I'd have wanted to have eaten much more. To make matters worse, they charge $2.50 for a cup of hot green tea. I am Japanese and I know Japanese food. And I can tell you that this Japanese food is the worst Japanese food I ever tasted since I came from Japan 10 years ago. I order Tempura and my wife order spicy noodle. Tempura was still okay, although I can make better Tempura myself.... But, I cannot accept this spicy noodle. They just put instant noodle (Korean instant noodle called Shin Noodle) and put several vegetable and they charge us $8.00 for that. Michael & Diane are the best! My husband and I found this little hole-in-the-wall (right next to a pet fish store!) when we decided on moving here. It was proof that Burbank is one great town. We very quickly became friends with the owners & have two of our pictures on the wall. The sushi is great: always fresh and tasty (the yellowtail really does melt). The people are great: always hugs and smiles. The atmosphere is perfect: intimate and friendly. Even the clientele is great: I'm part of it! We've met great people there and had great food. I always rave to my friends about this place. The price is good, especially for sushi, which can very quickly turn expensive and is not always priced to quality. I've never had their cooked entrees, but I read somewhere that, if you go to a steak joint, don't expect their chicken to be any good. There's a great ramen place in Glendale and other Japanese specialties in Little Tokyo. This place is great for raw (and cooked) sushi. read more

If it was just a question of the food, I'd probably give Sushi Dake 4 stars. The fact that when I walk in the door with my two year old daughter Diana, the owner, kneels down on the floor to give her a big hug makes it 5 stars. This has become our go-to family sushi restaurant. Sometimes it's just the two of us, sometimes Dad comes with us too, but either way it's always a good meal. If I'm there by myself or with mini-me, I usually get a meal combo with sashimi, sushi, California roll, tempura, salad, and miso soup. It sounds like a ton of food, but the portions of each are reasonable and I feel like I got the full sushi experience. With a friend or my husband along, getting a few specialty rolls to share is great. We love the Oishi Roll, which has no rice and is wrapped in cucumber. The spicy albacore roll is also great. My husband's favorite is the grilled (broiled?) hamachi collar. I don't care for cooked fish, so it's not my cup of tea, but he loves it. I also always make sure to take a look at the specials board hanging behind the sushi bar since it changes regularly. On one of our visits, Diana gave my daughter a teddy bear wearing a Sushi Dake shirt. She calls him Sushi Bear and sleeps with him every night. For a picky eater who won't eat hardly any protein, having a toddler friendly sushi restaurant has been fabulous. She will sit there happily eating edamame, tamago (egg), and miso soup for an hour. If we ask her where she wants to go for dinner or lunch, pretty much without fail she wants to go to Sushi Bear's house. read more

The daughter of a travel agent and someone who lived in London for a year, I've done a fair bit of traveling. I haven't been to Japan though, number one on my list. Thus, I will be eating lots of sushi to console me until I have the funds to go east. I'd noticed this place a few times while stopping in a few doors down at Donut Prince, but it was sushi in a strip mall so I thought nothing of it. Then I looked it up on Yelp. God bless sweet, sweet Yelp. How else would I navigate the strange and unfamiliar environs of Burbank, where my boyfriend lives and which prior to him I had visited exclusively for Ikea. Um, back to the fish... I had the house salad, which is the standard one served at Japanese restaurants but which was exceedingly satisfying here. Then I watched the chef make my Tiger Roll, which had spicy tuna, baked eel, avocado and cucumber. The portions here are pretty generous but don't make you want to vomit up your meal with guilt (maybe that's just me though). The sushi chef we had was kind and personable, if not Mr. Friendly, and made sure we were happy with our food, which lord knows I was. I told my boyfriend that we will be back. I'll eat here even after I've had my Japan vacation, because good unpretentious sushi will always make me and my tummy happy and kind owners who care about their customers means more to me that spending up the ass to feel belittled and lucky to be enjoying something, that when you get right down to it, is only food. read more

Meh -- not good quality sushi at all and for the price you can get higher grade, I promise you. A huge indicator is that their sushi falls appart, or it loses it's shape super quick: meaning they are using a dull knife to cut that stuff. And the sashimi has alot of white lines running and it's not the right color. I usuallly LOVE amaebi and uni but i took a bit and couldn't continue. It's ok, for what it is and to take it for what it is, don't come in here expecting TRUE Japanese food (I think it's korean owned, which is like MOST places these days, if you want authentic then msg me). read more

I loved this place. It's not only right by my place so it's very convenient for me, but I also think it may be my new sushi spot. Burbank is no stranger to yummy sushi joints, but this place particularly stands out because their service was so nice, detailed, and helpful. Tony, our sushi chef at the bar, was very quick, conversational, and friendly. His smile just warms up your day and makes the food taste better. The waitresses were also very friendly and attentive. I had the Diana roll, Sushi Dake, Spicy Tuna, and Heart Attack. All of them were really good. The Heart Attack is not a roll, it's an assortment of spicy tuna stuffed jalapenos. YUM!!!!! I've been coming here for years and always have enjoyed the food. The service quality during the past year has not been great. I know it's COVID, I get it. But all the more reason to be proactive and try to retain your clientele. They just don't seem very interested in actually retaining customers or selling food. The last few times I've ordered (or tried to order) it's been less than a pleasant experience. I called to order 45 min before they closed one night and they told me the kitchen was already closing so they weren't taking orders. Hmmm - this is like Oct 2020, you can't tell me one more sale wouldn't help the bottom line. Fast forward to trying to call today and the phone literally just doesn't get picked up. I drive over to place my order in-person and it's seems they've just decided to not answer the phone and take orders over the phone. Again, I'd think any business would be great right now. It's close and convenient, the food is good. But in LA where you can literally drive 10 min in any direction and find great sushi you'd think they'd be interested in making money and staying in business. 3 stars for the food being good but I'll probably go somewhere else for sushi for now. read more

Came here for a casual dinner on a Thursday evening before closing. The place was filled with other patrons and the baseball game was playing. Parking was super easy and I was greeted by the staff. The food was great, I got some special rolls and a bit of salmon sashimi and the yellowtail carpaccio which is a must. Their blue crab hand rolls are also delicious but my friend ate more of that than I did. The food was fresh and tasted great. As for the service, even though it was packed, it's a pretty intimate restaurant and the waitress was very attentive to our needs and came by exactly when we needed it and checked up on us constantly. When I'm in the area again I'd definitely stop by for another delicious dinner. read more

But based on what I read here, I persisted. I'm glad I did. The staff was friendly and attentive, the sushi rolls were creative, original and delicious, and the fish was fresh and generously apportioned. Prices were very reasonable. So don't be afraid! This place is great! I highly recommend trying out everything you possibly can! They have great miso, friendly help, and fabulous sushi. The owners will begin to recognize you after a few visits, so I was quite pleased: they have a wall of people that visit regularly. I had the sushi lunch special, which comes with 8 pieces of sushi and 4 pieces of California roll (which I substituted for a spicy tuna roll). Most of the pieces of sushi probably shouldn't have been consumed. The snapper was chewy---I had to struggle to bite into it. The salmon was the only piece that was relatively fresh. Granted, I think this was the first sushi I had in the US after my Tokyo trip, and that was unfair as a comparison point. But regardless, my expectations were not that high for a casual lunch place. The sushi was terrible and I don't have any inclination to come here again despite the proximity to work. Always passed this place whenever I went to the store but never went in, but as I was heading home I figured I'd try it out. Walked into a typical looking sushi place and was sat down at the bar. I ordered tuna, albacore and mackerel, while I was waiting the chef gave me my very large plate of wasabi/pickled ginger. For some reason I knew that I was going to need it for this meal... First up was my tuna, right off the bat something didn't look right. It looked like butterflied and draped over the rice like a tent. I ate this one by itself to get the taste of the tuna, but was sorely disappointed by a taste of nothing followed by a slimy after feeling... I started to feel the other piece and I was right, my chopstick ever so slightly started to stick to my tuna... Disappointing. Next up was albacore, now, I love albacore, almost as much as tuna... I know how both of them are supposed to taste. I cleansed my pallet with the ginger and dug in. Remember my tuna review? Copy and paste that here with the exception of the stickiness. Nothing, I tasted nothing but the weird seasonings that they had put on. Last up was the mackerel, this came up with a small extra piece of fish on the side, so I decided to try that first... Thank the gods! Something that tasted like it was supposed to! It wasn't super flavorful but was actually very good, I should really have just ordered three orders of that. But alas, I hadn't been to this place before so I didn't know. The service was nice enough, I never had an empty cup, the waitress always came by to refill it when I was low, and the chefs weren't super talkative but were welcoming at least. As I was leaving we all got into a small conversation about my hair, which is about three feet long at the moment. He asked how long I grew it and if I wanted a haircut, bringing out his chef's knife while saying that. I do love it when chefs/servers have a sense of humor and let it out during service, it makes the atmosphere so much lighter. The ending of the meal was better then the entirety, though. I noticed that yelpers had mixed reviews on the freshness of the sushi, but most of the reviews were positive, so I gave it a try today. Sushi Dake (which means "sushi only" in Japanese) looks like a real dive from the outside and is located in the same mini-mall-ish spot as Scales & Tails where I used to get supplies for my pet fish and turtles. I ordered one of the sushi combos which came with 10 pieces of sushi (tuna, salmon, shrimp, crab, egg, white fish, etc.) and 4 pieces of California rolls for the reasonable price of $16.95. My husband got the Dake Special ($20.50) that came with miso soup, salad, rice, 5 pieces of sushi, 3 pieces of sashimi, 4 California rolls, and your choice of teriyaki (chicken, salmon) OR tempura. Although the sushi wasn't terribly big, this was a LOT of food. My husband felt that his sushi was very fresh and tasty, better than sushi we've gotten from other Burbank establishments like Zono and Tomo. While I agreed that the fish was fresh, I didn't get the best cuts, hence some of it was hard to eat (in other words, not melt-in-your-mouth cuts of fish). We also got the calamari rings ($6.96) as an appetizer, and it was excellent. Salad dressing was really good. The miso soup was bland. I wasn't crazy about the teriyaki sauce that came with my husband's salmon, but then again, he liked it. He would've given this place a 4, but I'm giving it a 3 for now. We'll probably come back and see how consistent they are with their food. As for the service, our waitress was nice, but she was the ONLY one serving all the other patrons (about 4 other tables), so she didn't come by that often. I'm a bit sad to leave this review of my favorite neighborhood sushi place. Well, technically, it's our ONLY neighborhood sushi place so it's our go-to for quick sushi since it's 3 blocks from our place. This past Saturday, my wife and father-in-law and I went to Sushi Dake for dinner. We ordered the usual stuff....a couple of rolls, some miso soup, etc. My wife, not a big sushi eater, ordered some cucumber rolls and the sesame chicken appetizer. I've never much cared for it, but she likes it. We all eagerly ate all our food and left satisfied. Awesome, super-awesome service as usual and not too hard on the pocketbook. A few hours later, my wife began an on-and-off vomiting session that lasted 12 hours. She barely slept and went back and forth from the toilet to bed all night and part of the morning. I knew immediately what the culprit was: that damn chicken. I've found that Asian restaurants are notorious for undercooking breaded chicken bits. And Linds got hit with it BIG TIME that night and the following morning. She ended up spending the day in bed drinking Gatorade. Thankfully, she woke up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed but we lost an entire day of our long weekend. I am truly sad that this happened. We may never go back. But I'm not saying don't eat here. Just don't eat chicken here. ---- EDIT: Her fears conquered, my wife suggested we have sushi here again. Really, it was just that one chicken thing that nailed her and, of course, this time we didn't order it and left unscathed and satisfied. First time coming to this place. Staff is super friendly and attentive during our dine in. This was around lunch time on a Wednesday. I had their chicken teriyaki/spicy tuna roll lunch combo. Very satisfying. Serving size was plentiful as it comes with salad and miso soup. Chicken teriyaki was tad bit dry but maybe because I asked for the sauce in the side? Sushi Dake is my #2 spot for sushi in SoCal - trailing only slightly behind Katsu-Ya (Studio City location only - eff the other katsu-ya locations - they PALE in comparison). if katsu-ya were less expensive and easier to get a table at, i might consider swapping Dake for my number 1. (and yes, before you think to yourself, "has she tried blowfish or sushi dan? is she mental?...YES i have been to blowfish and sushi dan - SO OVER IT go be a star-f*cker somewhere else less obvious, losers - p.s. F*CK BLOWFISH fusion has NO place in sushi) Dake is clean, priced well (slightly high but worth the cost), friendly and has ample parking. the sushi is fresh, assembled beautifully and the flavours work well together. i have found, save for Katsu-Ya that some of the best sushi in socal is in fact made by korean chefs (see sumo sushi in the valley) and i extra-enjoyed bringing a korean-speaking friend with me to dine there and we got the BEST service i've ever had there. try the Y2K roll (i order mine extra-spicy). it's a spicy tuna roll that's deep-fried and then sliced -- the crisp tempura-style adds great dimension and texture. the Love Roll has no rice but you will find extremely fresh tuna wrapped around delicate crab and sauced with a tangy mustard-seed based vinaigrette that you will want to schlurrp right off the plate. big thumbs up to this all-fish roll!! the Sexy Roll is also another favourite -- though i often hit up Dake with a friend who has a severe avocado allergy, the chefs replace avo with cucumber for us or omit it entirely to avoid a medical-interaction -- and never fails to satisfy - drizzled with eel sauce and everybody's favourite kewpie mayo sauce the sexy roll has texture, flavour, it's substantial and it's worth every penny. the crunch roll and hotlilne are standard pretty much everywhere you go and they do have other specials involving scallops, lobster, salmon.. i'm so enamored by what i usually get i often get too full to branch out and try other things when i'm there. please note sushi dake is a SUSHI resto and if you want Ramen or Udon )or americanized teriyaki) you're best bet is to find it elsewhere. i would sushi myself into a coma at Dake on the regular if i had the $ for it read more
