They get four stars simply because I think the menu is a tad overpriced. The pork gyoza were a bit oily and chewy. The Southern California roll was chewy too. I like my tempura slightly crunchy. I was really interested to try this place out, and it was weird disappointment. Spicy tuna roll and sun valley roll were good. Inari was also good and they gave an extra one, which was really sweet. But, we also got their California roll plater thing and it was disgusting. I'm not sure if the crab was off or the mayo, but it was rancid smelling and sour. Probably not ordering here again. Also, odd kind of baked salmon roll, not going to ding them about that. But possibly rancid California rolls are a big disappointment. read more

I was looking for a new sushi place for lunch and decided to check out Sushi Dragon because of the other reviews here. It appears it has two open times a lunch and dinner time, I came for the lunch time. The general sushi looked very good and Tommy was beyond friendly. I decided to try a lunch combination, there was the standard combo and a choose your combination. I went with a combo of Sashimi, California rolls, and some tempura, this also came with rice, miso soup, and a salad. Overall this ended up being $14 before tax since Sashimi is a bit extra The food came shortly after I finished the miso soup so it was perfect timing on delivery of food. The food itself was well presented and tasted fine, there is only so much that can be done with a CA roll but the Sashimi was very well done. In addition I was able to see the orders from the people around me as well and along with looking great everyone around me also seemed satisfied. The only downside is there is a $20 minimum for the use of card and without ordering more food I was unable to use it and had to use cash. It's not the end of the world but even a fee to use a card would have been preferable. Overall this is a great hole in the wall spot with a welcoming staff. Where do I start with this restaurant? This place has made me realize that location means nothing when it comes to the quality of food being served. I have ordered from sushi dragon twice. Because I am on the go I've only ordered the lunch specials. They typically include one California or spicy tuna cut roll along with a 7 piece assorted nigiri. Let me tell you that this place will not disappoint. The fish is fresh to the taste, like butter, the rice is a perfect sticky and tastes great. I love the type of nori used to wrap the cut rolls, it has that authentic Japanese roasted taste which will only make you want more. I am truly proud that a place like this exists in the area I work. Not deserving of the four stars it currently has with about 190 reviews. I should have trusted my instincts when I pulled up and noticed the homeless encampment right next to the restaurant, but then I wondered how good the food must be if people were not detoured by the transients. My second warning was when we walked in and we were the only ones in the restaurant. Again my hungry stomach justified it by figuring that 5pm is early for dinner on a Saturday night, and we had just beat the dinner rush. The waitress and chef were very nice but unfortunately I can not say the same for the food. I ordered a $17 sashimi salad and it was just some low quality assortment of sashimi slapped onto a bed of lettuce, a few wilted cucumbers, and drizzled with some weak ponzu sauce. We also ordered several rolls including California rolls, cucumber rolls, spicy tuna hand roll, green oysters, miso soup, and edamame. Both the cut and hand rolls were mediocre at best, and they were smaller then I've ever had before. The green oysters were ok, and it's funny to say but their miso soup and salted warm edamame very good. Yes, it is located on a shady little corner with the homeless encampment, but that did not deter me from patronizing the place, since no one bothered me. I walk in, and find it a little enchanting. Came here for my bday due to the 4.5 stars at the time. To my surprise this place was nothing close to 4 stars. If I could put 0 stars I would. The only thing that would give this place 1 star is the nice waitress, but even then we were never really checked on. People that would give this place 5 stars are those who get the "regular treatment" aka sit at the bar. We were seated at 530 pm and literally got our food at around 7pm for 12 people and we only got half our orders. Ive never felt more disrespected and Tommy didn't even apologize and rushed our orders because the sushi was poorly cut and put together. Dragon's are known for being dangerous and sneaky. That being said- I should have taken the name 'sushi dragon' more seriously before walking into this establishment. I've never encountered fish so slimy, smelly, and all around revolting as this before. Sorry Sushi Dragon- the waitress was sweet but I have to shout this out. I ate two and a half pieces of sushi. The first was the albacore. it's on the top ten list of most disgusting things I've ever sampled. It TASTED like food poisoning. Super slimy. With red spots on it. I knew I shouldn't have eaten it- but I didn't want to look like a pussy. Piece number 2- Tuna. This actually tasted normal. It didn't tast good by any means. But it seemed about a week fresher then the albacore. Sweet Shrimp. This might actually be #1 on the 'most-disgusting-things-i've-ever-tasted' list. I couldn't even swallow. Also- it was expensive. If you enjoy fish, enjoy eating, or enjoy your good health- bypass the dragon. This is a mythological fight you may not be ready to win. read more

Dragon Roll: California roll topped with eel and eel sauce. The eel was delicious. Maybe this was my favorite. Hmmm... I'm torn between three and four stars on this review. I opted for three because of the limited choice of spicy rolls, which are my favorite. Also, I had to stop the waiter and ask for a water refill which is a big no-no for me. It's in a tiny strip mall with buildings that have seem better days (or not depending on what your opinion of the valley is). My friends and I shared some sushi rolls. We had the rainbow roll, dragon roll, philly roll, and spider roll. There rolls were just okay. Nothing to write home about. There were on par with what you can get at any other sushi place. However, with the cozy quarters where most every other patron is at the sushi bar, I think I would have to eat at the sushi bar to get a better feel for what this restaurant actually is like. The food prepared by chef Tommy was delicious! First one has to get over how run down the outside of the building looks. It's located in a plaza with a dry cleaner and other stores. I went around 6pm and happy hour was happening :) They have great deals during those hours on yakitori, calamari, spicy tuna rolls, sake, and beer to name a few. I ended up ordering spider roll, assorted sushi and the calamari. Also had a nice cold Sapporo to accompany my meal. The fish was very fresh. My friends ordered spicy tuna roll, sun valley roll, jimmy roll, deluxe sashimi combination, and then I lost count. Everyone was more than satisfied. The waitress was super sweet and attentive. The friend that suggested this place is a regular. The staff welcomed her with the warmest greeting. The ladies bathroom was clean. Another disappointing dining experience from my trip to California. My friend and I were excited to try west coast sushi, and figured this place would be a solid introduction given its 4 1/2 star rating on Yelp. Major mistake. We mostly chose Sushi Dragon because of its accessibility to our hotel, but we clearly should have made the trek into downtown LA instead. Most of our rolls were marred by a surplus of sesame seeds. Seriously, some of our rolls were so completely coated that you could barely see the rice underneath. Nigiri is definitely the way to go here, as sesame seeds are nowhere to be found. The fish was fresh and oh so buttery smooth. I should have made a meal of tuna, salmon, and yellowtail, but alas I polluted my palate with rolls and some pretty terrible tempura calamari. We had a couple handrolls that were pretty good, but they weren't cheap even with the happy hour discount. This review has been mostly negative, but I would be remiss to mention our lovely waitress Yumi. Although she charged us for a roll we never received (I didn't notice until it was too late), she was sweet and attentive the entire night. read more

Tommy (and I'm assuming Reina) were VERY accommodating despite the fact that they had already packed up most of the kitchen for the night, kindly inviting us in to eat. We ate fantastic sushi, talked about surfing with Tommy, and listened to 80s hits that were playing on the radio. If you're searching for a good sushi restaurant in the area I definitely recommend this one. There's lots of parking so that's not a worry. Gave it a try, trying to find our sushi happy place in a new city. Tried some basic nigiri, nothing fancy, just to get a sense of the place. Three and a half stars. It was definitely a-okay. 1. I really enjoyed my albacore and hamachi nigiri. The hamachi in particular was quite good. One star for the albacore and hamachi! We also tried tuna and salmon nigiri, both of which we thought were okay. Flavor okay, texture okay, but just not great. Half a star So this feels nitpicky, but our sushi rice was not flavorful and it kept falling apart. It wasn't holding its shape, broke apart into pieces when you picked each piece of nigiri up. Annoying. The rice holding together is sort of important. It's the little things but this is a pretty big little thing. There was also was so much wasabi on each piece of nigiri, which (I felt) detracted from the fish. Took off one star because rice matters. 2. The miso soup was really flavorful and complex. I really enjoyed it. Half a star. Miso is important and some places really just make terrible miso soup. I loved this. It's the little things, like I said. 3. The garlic ponzu on the albacore was to DIE for. Half a star. 4. The server (the sushi chef's daughter) was so sweet and friendly, service was fast, and good. There's a list of rules on the wall when you walk in which, in essence, boil down to "don't be a jerk and don't let your kids run wild in the restaurant." One star for the cheerful, friendly service. one plus one plus three halves, that's three and a half stars. Inside is very cute and very small. Outside, it's a really crappy corner of Vineland. There's a large park across the street, and what appeared to be a homeless encampment. There was a dude bathing on the sidewalk outside and a couple of tents set up, but no one bugged us. It's kind of a scary neighborhood at night. I wouldn't want to have to park and walk to the restaurant alone after dark. They do have a very small lot in the front but it was full when we were trying to park. This has all the makings of a great sushi spot. I love that the focus is on the fresh fish and not on crazy rolls with a million sauces. They have a few rolls, but they aren't hiding behind them. We will be coming back and trying some more menu items and giving that rice, salmon and tuna another shot. Everyone has a slightly off day. Seeing as i'm not a sushi snob...yet...I have given this spot 5 stars! :) The food is great, the service is awesome, and it has a very cozy feeling. Came here with my younger brother in early January on a Friday when he gets out early from school. My brother (11) has been a fan of sushi long before I was so when I finally tried it and was craving some we did a quick search on my phone and found this spot. Since I was still new to sushi we ordered very basic rolls with the assistance of the chef who was more then willing to help us find our way! We ordered a Cali roll each, a philadelphia roll, and a shrimp tempura roll. We shared the two other rolls. We ate at the bar so the chef was right in front of us and we had a ball observing him making the sushi. Seeing as my brother is 11 and is trying to find his way around chopsticks one of the waitresses noticed he was having a hard time and made him a kid friendly pair with the chop sticks wrapper and a rubber band that helped him out so much. I have also called in an order and it was great as expected. Please, don't be turned off from this place because it seems kind of out of place in this part of the valley because it truly is a gem! read more

This is the real deal: a guy from Tokyo who knows who to prepare fresh fish... he hits the fish market downtown everyday and it shows... had some QUALITY fresh yellowtail and the best albacore I've had ever, and we do a lot of sushi. Super friendly and humble even though he's a bad ass chef behind the counter! Out of the blue he bring us these yellow tail ribs he dusted with some salt and sauce and baked for a few minutes... killer! Free green tea ice cream for yelpers and a happy hour from 4-7. Great meal for the two of us included 2 large beers, 2 apps, a roll, a hand roll, a sashimi plate and multiple pieces of sushi all for $60. As Tommy the chef says, "See you tomorrow!" Wow... this place is SKETCHY on the outside. While we were in the restaurant, I saw at least three shopping carts/"mobile homes" pass on by. I actually went to check on our car during lunch to make sure no one had broken in to it. That being said... This is really FRESH sushi. We had a bit of everything.. Nigiri, Maki, Tempura. All good. All very fresh. Try the iced green tea - it's good stuff! The service was friendly and prompt, but some of the sushi came out in a weird order - some nigiri, some rolls, some more nigiri, another roll. It all worked out ok though. A diamond in the rough. Wow. There is no way I would have found Sushi Dragon if I didn't have Yelp on my iPhone. I was one the way to the Burbank Airport when I started getting hungry and fortunately I had enough time to get a little risky. I parked outside around the corner, where sketchy bums and local hoodlums eyed my rental car. Whatever, it's a rental. Anyhoo, the sushi is fantastic. Holy cow fantastic. The albacore, topped with either a garlic slice or ginger, was out of this world. The salmon was excellent, the mackerel, yellowtail, and snapper too. The quality, holy dude, I don't know how they got such quality in such a randomly placed restaurant. If you put Sushi Dragon's slices, which are ample and generous, next to Nobu's, Nobu would be turning red with embarrassment. The chef and the waitress were also very charming and friendly. I struck up a conversation with them and they said I look like Jet Li. Ehhhh???? This was definitely a hugely nice surprise and a highlight of the week. Thanks Sushi Dragon. p.s. Sushi Dragon has always provided a very satisfying experience for me. I always enjoy talking to the chef about his hometown in Japan. The small size of this restaurant makes for a warm and friendly atmosphere. It's very easy to shift back and forth between your own company and the company of others at the bar. There's always a unique blend of different people to get to know. Tommy, the chef, always surprises me with some new fresh cut like hamaguri or blue fin tuna. Both of which are difficult to come by at most sushi joints. The fish is always fresh and the portions are just right. At sushi bars, I always order whatever I crave without consideration of the price. I also always drink beer and sake. When I eat at Sushi Dragon, I am ALWAYS pleasantly surprised when I receive the bill. It's usually about 40-50% less than what I expected it to be (considering all I ate and drank). Very good prices.
