I went here because they had a good Groupon for sushi and a comedy night. You go down to the basement where they have lots of tables around a stage. The food was really good and pretty cheap for a sushi place. We got Monkey Brain (a fried avocado), a few rolls, soup and beer. It's kind of a hit or miss with the comedians that are there (I have been once before). This time a lot of jokes were about divorce which I haven't experienced...yet.. Don't tell my husband. Ok I'm not married. Also you should make a reservation in advanced and both times I got sat upfront. The show goes till around 10-10:30 and they want you there before the show starts at 8. I was honestly rather disappointed with our experience at Sushi Hai, I will say that the restaurant space itself is very nice, and I liked the decor. Sadly, I don't go to restaurants to look at the walls, I go there to eat. Service took literally forever, though I don't blame our server. She was the only one on duty that night, despite lots of customers, plus two large parties, including our own - and we made reservations well in advance so management should have known to have more staff on duty. The poor lady also had to work the bar! After an hour and a half, one of the managers began to help out a little, but it was definitely too little, too late. The sushi was rather mixed in quality - some of it was acceptable, some was very good (I truly enjoyed the drop-kick roll), and some of it tasted like it had been prepared in advance and left out. The flying fish roe was terrible - fishy and salty, and myself, my husband, and one other friend who ate them were sick to our stomachs and burping up nasty fishy flavor the next day. The prices were much higher (sometimes as much as five times higher!) than much better sushi at our local broomfield favorite, Taru sushi. Additionally, I notice that their online menu has incorrect (lower) pricing for some items. Nice atmosphere, and perhaps if you want a place to drink with friends and listen to music, and avoid anything that might poison you, it might be okay - if you have a lot of time to wait. Sick of paying an arm and a leg and dealing with the pretentiousness of some of the patrons at Sushi Sasa, my girlfriend and I were on a mission to find a new sushi joint to frequent. Google Maps to the rescue! To our surprise there was Sushi Hai, about half a mile from our house! So, we thought we'd give it a shot and couldn't be happier we did! The first thing you'll notice is finding a place to park nearby is the luck of the draw - not Sushi Hai's fault, but still worth noting. You walk in and immediately think, "Damn, this place is tiny!" However, you'll soon quickly learn as they walk you toward the back there are some stairs leading to an additional dining area. The tables are a bit small so they can maximize space, but with two people it never seemed uncomfortably cramped with drinks and a couple plates. The booths, however have more than enough room. Suckers for calamari we order some for an appetizer along with some sake. As we enjoy our sake and some of the most delicious calamari I've had in a long time we decide to get a spider roll, dragon roll, yellowtail sashimi, and tako tako. In good ol landlocked colorado good calamari is hard to come by and mostly what you'll find are small chunks that are over breaded then deep fried into oblivion. Not here! I was very happy to are large pieces of meat very lightly breaded and fried just long enough to make the breading perfectly crispy! It was nice to actually be able to taste the flavor of the calamari instead of just the breading. The spider roll had great presentation that matched it's flavor. No imitation crab here! Instead you'll find nice large and delicious pieces of crab meat. The dragon roll was also quite good although it seemed a little rice heavy compared to the spider roll. The yellowtail melted in your mouth as it should and tasted delicious. The tako tako was less spicey thani had hoped but this by no means it didn't taste good - still very full of flavor, just could have been spicier. We left no room for dessert, got the check, and were pleasantly surprised! For sushi that satisfied us just as much - if not more because it's closer to home and has less pretentious patronage, the bill came out to about 2/3 the amount it would have cost for an equivalent meal at Sushi Sasa! read more

I've gone here for years and was disappointed that instead of spreading people out across their restaurant, they shove everyone in the basement section and tables are only spaced a few feet apart. I ate here with my girlfriend with the Living Social deal and we went in with an open mind. We hadn't heard anything about it and we both love sushi so we thought we would give it a try. Honestly, the only GREAT thing we experienced about our visit was that the busboy who kept refilling our water was very attentive. That's where the GREAT ends and the MEH/NOT GREAT starts. The MEH: The food. I am a big sushi ROLL fan so that is what I am basing my review on (so I can't say too much about the sushi/sashimi). The rolls were rather lackluster. A few of the rolls were made with rice that was too sweet and my girlfriend and I BOTH experienced rolls that fell apart when we were picking them up. Overall, the food was not BAD but wasn't much to write home about. The price. A bit pricey for the experience that we had. Sure, we got a good deal with the Living Social deal but I will say that I am glad that I didn't try it while paying full price. The NOT GREAT: The service. Our waitress walked around like she had a stick up her ***, literally and figuratively. She walked around with her nose up in the air the whole time and was not friendly or attentive whatsoever. The place wasn't too busy and her section wasn't keeping her too busy so her sheer lack of attentiveness to us was completely uncalled for (and very unimpressive). As I said above, the busboy was great (and my girlfriend and I agreed he was the best part of it all) but other than that, not great whatsoever. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place to any of my friends. I went to Sushi Hai last night with some girlfriends and although it was okay - we've had much better service, atmosphere and (most importantly) sushi at other places. Our waitress was a bit surly and the service was pretty slow (it took about 1/2 hour to get our tiny appetizer bowl of edamame...) The sushi was okay, but like I said, I've had better. The Firecracker roll and the salmon/avacado roll were good, but the rest fell a little flat in my opinion. Outside of the drinks and food, the atmosphere at Sushi Hai is nice - but quickly becomes ruined by the bumping loud music from the bar. I really felt like I had to lean toward my friends to hear what they were saying. I love Sushi Hai's neighborhood, and the atmosphere would be nice without the bumping music... PRO: Sushi Hai has a great atmosphere -- very trendy with cocktails, low lighting, TVs playing music videos in the background, and attractive young waiters & waitresses. Yet, it's not overly glamorous or unapproachable. The sofas and set up is great for groups and relaxing. I like Sushi Hai a lot. We always sit at the bar and discovered that you get a free little saucer of pickled cucumbers and tuna when you do - pretty cool. The decor is good, but the space is excellent. I swear there are five levels, and each offers a different feel but the building is worth checking out for sure! We have always had impeccable service there (in fact, it was the first place we ate at when we moved here a few months ago), the sushi is always fresh despite our geographic location and the area can't be beat. I have only had sushi here, so I can't speak for their other menu items. But I love this place! We come here every time we are in the area with a friend, and are never disappointed. Our favorite rolls to order: Dragon Roll, Spider Roll, Rainbow Roll. We always get the spicy tuna, and this last time also got tuna sashimi. The Smelt Roe is also good, we usually avoid Salmon Roe because it is usually kinda gross and oily, so we've never ordered that here. The edamame is good, and although I'm not a big sake fan, I enjoyed the warm pomegranate sake, fruity but not overbearing. Our service during the last visit was very attentive. Liz came by several times, answered any questions, was very friendly, and was constant on refilling our water, which I appreciate. If you sit in the upstairs area in the winter, you will likely be cold as the door is always being opened and letting cold air in. Cool space and good drinks, but I wasn't sold on the sushi. Quite possibly, it was the worst sushi I've had in the city. The rice barely stuck together- basically resulting in a suggestion of a roll. I wasn't impressed at all. We sat in new/downstairs bar. Like I said, it was a cool space- loungy without pretension. I've got two words for Sushi Hai: Aw. Ful. Service is awful and sloooow (30 minute wait for a glass of beer). Sushi is awful and flavorless (and warm). The rolls fall apart, the rice is dry, the fish slices so thin to be nearly transparant. The place is teeming with the worst sorts of obnoxious, flipped collar yuppsters. And it's way, way overpriced. I used to eat here quite a bit, living in the neighborhood. It was always good (never great), with an excellent happy hour. This was the first time back in over a year. OK...I have been to more sushi spots than I care to admit. The only reason (and a damn good one, I might add) I found this place was that I recently moved into the neighborhood (West Highland area). I had my trepidations (no, not a new rare form of sea creature) because the place was almost empty on a Thursday night at 7:00. I have to say, though, it WAS the 4th of July weekend coming-up, so we can blame the 'ol "people-go-out-of-town" thing. Aaanyway, we were seated quickly (of course) and were greeted promptly by our server (who immediately had the hots for my son). I was pleased to see they had Momokawa Diamond by the bottle and it was not crazy expensive. So we drank and stared-down the menus. We ordered Kalbi (which was also a pleasant surprise - being a Korean item, really) and Seafood Dynamite appetizers. The Kalbi was just outstanding! From presentation to the way they cut it into manageable little hunks (vs. the wild slabs you encounter at any number of Korean BBQ joints around the world), it was delicious and perfectly cooked. Alas, the "Seafood Dynamite" was marginal. I had never seen Dynamite served this way...on rice...huh? It was a small portion of salmon and various indistinguishable seafood bits mixed with thin slices of scallion (?) and whatever else...on white rice to make it look like a larger portion. For something like $9, it was a real bummer. Tasted OK, but what the heck ever happened to slices of giant clam and maybe some shrimp or other clam varietals as the primary ingredient? It's been a long time...ahhhh, food costs rein supreme! Now...the sushi. Incredibly GOOD! I mean really excellent, balanced, beautiful, and fresh (like my ex?). We ordered what I consider a pretty basic assortment (Tuna, Whitefish, Salmon, Octopus, and some awesome Yellowtail Handrolls) that, in a very entertaining way, shocked the table of women sitting next to us. And embarrassed the new table on the other side of us full of young guys "hipsters", dare I say, whose table was like a white-out of Cali Rolls, Tempura Rolls (ugh), and other such stuff that comes precariously close to trashing what Japanese/Sushi experience ought to be (IMHO). Not to sound food snobbish...but sheesh. We even tried a little Creme Brulee' dessert "shot"...well...just suffice it to say, "stick with the sushi". Not terrible, just, well...annoying. How long do we have to wait for our meal? I mean, it's raw, you don't need to do much.... Oh Sushi Hai...I had such 'hai' hopes for you. Perhaps that is where the night started out wrong, my expectations were too great and I didn't do my homework. But, at the urging of friends, we decided to go to this sushi restaurant since we had yet to experience it. I was really hoping for better. First and foremost, if you're going to spend money on sushi, you might as well get the best, and that would not be here. The rolls are nothing to write home about and are a bit bland. Basically, I have concluded in my search for the best sushi in Denver, if you're looking for creativity, you go to Hapa; if you're looking for exceptional quality and great japanese tastes, you go to Sushi Den; if you're looking to try some flair, fusion and downright ridiculous tasting fish, you go to Izakaya Den; and if you want true Japanese cuisine, you go to Japon. Notice one thing: Sushi Hai is not on this list. The service was the killer of the evening. We waited ten minutes to be greeted, our apps came before our cocktails, the waitress forgot to bring us water twice, our glasses remained empty most of the evening and, the dagger in the heart, we watched as three other tables, all sat after us with bigger parties, got their sushi before we did. 25 flipping minutes after ordering, we finally got our sushi. And I know that the chefs need prep time, but come on, it's raw, you just roll it and put it on a plate. It should not take that long. Regardless of time or taste, I will not be going back to Sushi Hai. Although the martinis were good, that is not the reason I go out for sushi. read more

The private rooms here are so kawaii! I suggest you reserve one of these for your next birthday party, graduation, whatevz. The room's setup makes the meal more comfy and less pretentious overall. As for the food, I enjoyed it. It's not the best sushi I've ever had, but it does the job. For appetizers, I enjoy the gyoza and chile shrimp the most. For sushi, my faves are the firecracker roll, heart attack, crunchy roll, surf-n-turf roll, tamago nigiri, and monkey brain. I seriously wish they would add shrimp shumai to the menu. I really agree with the other reviews about the food- the sushi is good. Not great, but good. Some of the rolls are quite creative. But everything is definitely pricey! This is most certainly a classy date joint. Just don't come expecting to plan your next bank robbery or discuss your plans to assassinate the president, because the tables are really squeezed together tight. No privacy, I tells ya! The fish is always fresh and they find a way to make the appetizers a little more unique than most sushi restaurants. My favorite is the crispy rice cake with spicy tuna. They also have good deals for dinner with all their groupon and living social deals. They used to have a duck dish that was great, but it's disappeared from their menu. On my most recent visit, I tried their salmon with quinoa and their pork ramen. The salmon was seared perfectly and they made quinoa taste as good as it can get. I went to this restaurant on a Friday night and it took 10 minutes for my server to even ask for a drink order. Waited over 15 minutes for a coke but whatever. Then we got our order placed and after waiting a while, the wrong order hit our table. We let the server know and then we watched the food runner to take that plate and put it on another table. The same plate that hit our table and was contaminated by myself and my boyfriend without our masks on then went and was knowingly served to two totally different people. They are NOT taking health and safety procedures seriously during this pandemic and it's a shame as well as very dangerous. We then asked to speak to a manager and were told there was no manager there? As a fellow server of a restaurant I am extremely confused how this place is still open and running without a manager present on a Friday night to support the staff and assure safety and efficiency throughout the restaurant. Really really terrible experience and the first time I have canceled an order and walked out due to not feeling safe enough. We were left feeling very disappointed and grossed out. I was really surprised to log on and find so many lackluster reviews for Sushi Hai. I was there for the first time last Friday night and our experience was very positive. We had a group of 7 that showed up without a reservation for dinner around 9. We were seated immediately even though the restaurant was still busy at that hour. Our entire group had different choices among their signature cocktails which in general were good but not incredible. The one I ordered was something with strawberries in it which was tasty but the fresh strawberries could have been mashed a little finer. I kept getting straw-clogging chunks that were disrupting my drinking! We ordered two of the fancier rolls (a rainbow roll and something else), a sashimi plate, the gyoza appetizer and the calamari. Both the gyoza and the calamari were very good--the calamari was definitely the stronger of the two if I had to pick one. It was well-seasoned which I find to be difficult as I normally do not like fried calamari because it's so often over-seasoned or over-salted. The rolls were both delicious and comparable in quality to other good sushi restaurants. And I found the sashimi platter to be the standout. With the exception of the octopus and the whitefish, all of the cuts of fish on the plate were fresh and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I would happily order that again any time. And our service was great, despite what most Yelpers have felt about theirs. Perhaps this place is hit or miss, but it was definitely a hit for our group this weekend. read more

This place is near our home and I think the only reason I have come back here is because it's close and the sushi is good, not the best, but good. Instead of traveling across town to our fave spot, I've settled for this place. Man, I will not be coming here anymore and its chances have run out. Where do I start? The service sucks big time. I have never had service so crappy before. Whether I come during the week or weekend, it's slow and lacks-period. I have sat at the bar, downstairs near the bar, downstairs near the pool tables, and upstairs near the entrance, and mid-section.......do you think I've given it enough chances by now?!? Not anymore. One night I was there, former Mayyor Wellington Web was there having dinner and he even look frustrated when he couldn't get the server to his table to fill his water.......lame. I'm kind of surprised by the mixed reviews on this place, I've been here quite a few times and I've never experienced any problems with the fish smelling bad or the staff being rude. I mostly order the rolls and things that don't rely on just a giant piece of raw fish flying solo, so maybe that makes a difference. I've been here quite a few times for lunch and once for dinner and the food has always been solid. I'm not really a sushi purist and pretty much always go for the rolls with shrimp tempura and similar pedestrian fare. Americans, what are you going to do with them? They have a good selection of creative larger rolls, my favorite of which is the Firecracker and the Surf and Turf. I like that for their spicy rolls they don't top them with that spicy mayo, it's a tasty chili oil sauce. The only problem with service we had was once at dinner on a busy weekend night. We had our drinks but our food was taking forever to get there. Finally the waitress came over and said they accidentally put in our order as to-go so it never came up for the table. Without us getting all diva on them (which wouldn't have happened anyway) they comped a bunch of stuff from the bill and also gave us a gift card for a future visit. So I think it was fine; it just gave us more time to drink saketinis. I wouldn't let some of the other reviews scare you away unless you're looking for a place to get exotic varieties of raw fish so you can impress everyone with your well cultivated and refined palate for Asian delicacies. read more

I have to agree with most of the reviews- Sushi Hai is ok...we have been to the bar for drinks a few times, and like the downstairs...so we tried it for dinner for the first time this friday. The service was decent, nothing spectacular, but I've definitely had worse in my years of dining...I agree, the menu is tiny and a yawn. Our normal sushi joint is Hapa in Cherry Creek and we're excited to see what interesting rolls Sushi Hai could offer---I think there were one or two original rolls, and the classic rolls and nigiri were mediocre at best. I guess I can only really talk about the late night sushi experience at Sushi Hai as I've only been there after 9pm. The late night at Sushi Hai consists of down in the dungeon dining with extremely loud music and folks in their early 20s who are a little overdressed for sushi ... but that's just my opinion. The sushi is ok - having spent 8 years in San Francisco, I guess I was spoiled for fresh seafood. I also worked at a sushi restaurant and feel pretty confident I know what great sushi is. I guess being in the mid west kind of affects just how fresh sushi is, if you're not paying an arm and a leg for it. The service leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe that's a late night thing too? Last time I went, my boyfriend and I sat for at least 10 minutes before (finally) a uniformed policeman came over with a menu for us (What the ...?) because he said we looked hungry. Since eating there twice, I've been advised that I should always check my bill there ... apparently they have a habit of double charging you for drinks. Drinks are put on the regular menu tab, and then also added again at the bottom of the check from the bar. Unfortunately, I didn't check my bill but will DEFINITELY do so if I decide to eat there again. Man, I used to like the lower lounge - when did that Techno blast arrive? At least we had some dancing girls outside our not so private group room there... which might have been fun but we had to seriously make sure the doors were re-closed each time the waiter or buss person came through, or we couldn't talk. If you're put off by the so-so sushi, ya might have a go at the sliders. I know, odd for a fish joint... but they were ok. But, if you are looking to get drunk and eat mediocre (at best) sushi rolls this is the place for you. Steer clear of anything that requires it to be fresh to be tasty and instead focus on the cocktails, sake bombs and anything tempura'd rolls... This is the place to take those so called sushi lovers who think ordering a super crunch roll is living dangerously, or if you are a true sushi lover, make sure you go to this place with a nice buzz already in place. I do think it would probably be a fun place for groups...maybe high school prom kids or those who just turned 21, and honestly it's a pretty fun place to get bombed (although the service can be incredibly odd at times), just know before you go what you are going to get. as long as you go in knowing what to expect, I reckon you can enjoy yourself. I've been going to Sushi Hai for 5 years now, and have always been disappointed with the service. After about 3 years of being there at least a few times a month and no one remembering who I was, I started going to a different sushi joint where they learned who I was immediately. With that said, I just had a fabulous experience their last night with a waitress who took the time to talk to us and offered great service. I'm not sure what her name was, but she had two-toned hair (blonde underneath). You could really tell she was "working," and that she took being good at her job seriously. I was there with a friend of mine and our 3 month old babies, and she made us feel like our babies were just as welcome their as we were! Now I just wish the place would get a changing table...what restaurant in the Highlands doesn't have a changing table? We breed more than any other neighborhood I've seen. read more

Pretty average. Arrived on Superbowl sunday so there were 6 people in the restaurant. I ordered take out and they do require a credit card for that, which I'm not a fan of. I waited for over 20 minutes to get 2 rolls an order of sashimi to go. I feel that's a little long, though the bartender was really friendly and probably noticed I was getting impatient so he made comments to try and comfort me in the meantime. I got the Drop kick roll, shrimp tempura, tuna on top with a chili sauce. It was okay. Really needed more fish in it. I really like the chili sauce though, gave it a nice kick. But any roll for over $10 needs more fish. And I got the tuna sashimi, pretty good, huge chunks. He got the vegetable caterpillar roll, a veggie roll in seaweed with avocado on top. Nothing special in this roll, pretty boring. Probably won't be back. I don't know why it takes so long for 2 rolls, especially since only 2 tables were taken. I had lunch with a friend at Sushi Hai on a Friday and I can see that it has a ton of potential. Unfortunately, it wasn't a fabulous meal. But I'll definitely give it another try. Maybe it was because we were there at lunch? We came in and a very pleasant woman gave us a tour of the place at our request and then sat us at a table. She brought us waters and plates and I asked if she was our server. She said she was actually the bookkeeper but she tried to help the waitress out if she needed it. That wonderful woman then took our drink order and came back with our drinks just a bit later. The atmosphere was absolutely awesome and my friend and I will definitely be back for evening adult beverages at some point. We were really looking forward to the food. We waited. Then we waited some more. Then our actual waitress finally came by and it seemed that we were really putting her out by just being there. She took our order and left. Then we waited some more. It was quite awhile before I had green-lipped mussels in front of me. She also brought my sashimi. And she brought my friend's side of tempura vegetables. But my friend didn't see her fish taco entree for quite awhile. Our waitress offered no explanation or apology. The mussels were cold and apparently not baked (no crispy brown spots on the top at all). The veggies were warm at best. The fish was a little too warm. We guessed that our food had been sitting out ready to deliver for quite awhile before we got it. Though the mussels were no longer hot I could tell that they would have been good if a little warmer. Not the best I've had, but definitely not the worst. The tempura veggies were fine, but cold tempura is never all that great. My sashimi was fresh and good. I wanted some more shiso but our server didn't come back before we were finished. When the fish tacos finally came they were really good. I had a bite, and they were one of the best fish tacos I've had. The fish was fresh (obviously) and the sauce they used was excellent. That was a great plate of food, though honestly it was getting cold by the time we got it. She didn't offer dessert. Luckily we'd had about enough of the place so we paid and left. So I think that most of the issues were caused by poor service. She would often come into our area only to wait on one table and then leave again. Maybe it's just a lunch thing. Either way, I will try this place again for dinner sometime and review it again at that point. read more

A Groupon offer for a fairly respected sushi place? Sure, we'll give it a try. A-OK is pretty spot on. You're certainly paying for location and atmosphere, both of which are nice. Their gyoza is some of the best we've had, and would totally be worth a stop during happy hour. Given the Groupon, we decided to go all out and try their signature Hai Lobster Roll at $20. For that price, it was underwhelming. Either the butter sauce detracted from the flavor of the lobster instead of enhancing it (as expected), or the roll was bland and needed something with more of a boost. Either way, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't "OMGORDERMORE" - which it should be at $20. The rest of the normal rolls we ordered were fine. Nothing outstanding, but definitely solid and on par with other places. Service was efficient. Overall we probably won't be back for a regular meal, but would give happy hour a try if we're nearby. read more

Really good sushi! I don't usually go out of my way for sushi, but was persuaded to meet some friends here over the weekend. The Vegas roll and the Black Mamba were really good! Sake is another thing that I typically avoid, but Sushi Hai had a really good plum flavored sake: Purple Haze. The only downside is that the restaurant is really busy. You definitely need a reservation on the weekends. And the service was really slow, even when it came to replacing drinks. It's also a bit pricey. Our bill for two people was over $100, which included drinks and sushi. But I'll definitely be back! The food was stellar. read more

They were overbooked for Valentine's Day, sent us downstairs to the club level next to the bar. The drink menu included a section titled "bottle service". We watched our waiter set up our fold out table and fold up chairs. 10 minutes after sitting down we were given a pitcher of tap water with a few cubes of melted ice. I poured my own glass after pouring one for my date. We were told that the staff was at capacity that day, and we should be patient. Hard to be empathetic when I planned ahead and made a reservation, giving this establishment enough time and information to plan accordingly. This was a gross management failure in multiple areas - staffing, seating, customer flow management 10 minutes after serving my own water, our order was taken. 30+ min. after that our appetizers arrived. Fish was subpar. It was old, and/or left out too long. Toro was striped and in one of my Nigiri was split down the center. Sushi was inconsistent. read more
