I have avoided this place for so long but all my friends in Gardena always buy their takeout from here. I ordered the top 3 selling items: tempura, broiled salmon, miso soup, and salad for myself and the sesame chicken and rice for my son. When I got my package I couldn't believe how heavy the bag was and there were three full boxes. The amount was very generous and the salmon was fatty, crispy, and moist. The tempura was not greasy and everything was not overly salted. My boys loved the sesame chicken. I would definitely come back and buy takeout for my family. This mom and pop place is so cute! I am so thankful I found this hidden gem. I've been to Kansha, which is in the same plaza, multiple times and I have never paid attention to this restaurant. My friend was craving California rolls and what had attracted me to this place was the one $ on Yelp. They have a large variety of sushi and noodles on the menu. My friend ate at the restaurant. The lovely waitress/cashier/probably owner helped us fast. I had the Island sashimi bowl which came with miso soup. We also had complimentary tea. The fish was so fresh! Udong was $7 something. Usually udong costs around $11-15 these days. It was worth to try. We've ordered udong, inari sushi and sushi combo D. It was so good. Can't finish all cause portion was big. Didn't know they close 8pm and realize it was 8:10 when I noticed. We was hurried and apologized that we didn't know the time of restaurant close and owner lady told me, "no need to rush. My favorite hidden gem in Gardena! It's in the same plaza as Shin Sen Gumi Yakitori and my fave ice cream shop. Prices are reasonable especially during post-COVID times and the quality of the fish is always fresh and nothing short of excellent! Located in a small plaza on the corner of Western Ave. and 186th Street, this restaurant is nestled amongst a variety of different Japanese businesses. Though there is usually ample parking, the daily lunch rush can sometimes have you circling the parking lot a couple of times. I really like their Combination Plates! You can choose one, two, or three items from a list of 22 different options, including chicken, fish, tempura, sushi rolls, and more. Each combo plate comes with salad (the dressing is delicious!), steamed rice, and miso soup. I definitely recommend getting the Sesame Chicken (chicken karaage)...it has to be the best I've ever had, HANDS DOWN. Cut into small pieces, their sesame chicken is lean yet super juicy and flavorful! The batter on the outside has a perfect crunch. I can't seem to get enough of it! When I first discovered it, I'm pretty sure I ate here three times in one week! It's that good. I also recommend getting the Japanese Style Meat Balls. Though the meatballs themselves weren't very flavorful, the teriyaki sauce it comes with makes them quite tasty! Another of my go-to items is the gyoza. Their gyozas are Korean style--fried, so the outer wrapper is crunchy. They are so good by themselves, they don't even need shoyu (soy sauce)! Sushi Island also has some pretty good sushi and rolls! I've had their California Rolls, Cooked Salmon Roll, Philadelphia Roll, and Spicy Tuna Roll, and I was happy with all of them! The sushi rice is on the stickier side, and there is always lots of filling. Sushi Island's employees are always friendly and very nice. In my experiences, their service has always been fast whether I've called in an order or walked in for pick-up. I ended up grabbing dinner here one evening, thanks to two regulars, who walked up to walk into the restaurant, while I was looking at the menu. Father and son - told me they come here once a week and that it's the father's favorite place. How could I not even try it with a shout out like that? This place has good combo choices. There's a two item and three item combo, which comes with your choice of about four or five different types of rolls (8 pieces), tempura, mackerel, cod, chicken, teri, you know, the works! The prices are also reasonable for the amount of food you get and the choices they offer with the combos ($9-12). We got three rolls (I only remember the Dragon roll we got). And then for the three item combo we got mackerel, chicken katsu, and tempura. They were generous with the tempura (about three pieces of veggie and two huge shrimp), the mackerel was ehhhhh. Very dry! And the katsu is...katsu. It was okay. They have Bulldog sauce! And, they gave us miso soup to start which was a pleasant surprise. The Dragon roll was alright...it was very filling and they didn't skimp on the unagi. But I wish I remembered the other roll we had because that was very refreshing! There were chopped up green onions on top of the salmon, and I don't remember if there was anything inside or not but it was BOMB! Its really small inside so I'd get there early to beat the lunch crowd or go at some obscure time after lunch.
